We're right under the wire but Merry Christmas in July from Front Row Classics. Brandon is thrilled to welcome back author & historian, Jeremy Arnold to the podcast. Jeremy is the author of last year's "Christmas in the Movies" from Running Press and TCM, which is still available wherever books are sold. Brandon and Jeremy discuss two films celebrating anniversaries in 2024. Both films discussed are connected in ways that may surprise you. 1944's Meet Me in St. Louis (80th anniversary) and 1994's Little Women (30th anniversary) both feature pivotal scenes of the holiday season. Yet, they can be enjoyed year round.

We love Christmas movies for their tedious pleas for a return to small town values despite clearly being written by effete big city media types. CHRISTMAS WITH A CAPITAL C is one of the most glaring examples of this we've ever encountered, which makes it extremely charming. Dan Reed (Ted McGinley) is the affable mayor of a small Alaskan town with the seemingly perfect life, until his former high school rival Mitch Bright (Daniel Baldwin, who sounds almost exactly like his brother Alec) returns to Alaska after making it big in the city with a plan to dethrone Dan as mayor and finally separate church and state by removing the Nativity display from city hall. It's pretty obvious that this is a stupid idea and our hero Dan is going to prevail, which he quickly does, humiliating Mitch by revealing that his “rich and successful” act is a total lie. What's more interesting here is how CHRISTMAS WITH A CAPITAL C reveals that many adults are perpetually stuck repeating their high school humiliations, living their lives according to whether they were designated a “winner” or a “loser” at age 15. Also, the film is notable for a show stealing performance by Christian stand up comedian and film producer Brad Stine, who wrote the song that inspired the story of this film and who doesn't let a scene of his go by without completely chewing up the scenery. Don't believe in CHRISTMAS WITH A CAPITAL C? Get on the mic at your local city council meeting and let them have it. Merry Christmas in July! What if the most effective way to serve God was to do as much evil as possible? From accomplished Spanish writer/director Álex de la Iglesia comes THE DAY OF THE BEAST (EL DÍA DE LA BESTIA) which finds a protagonist in priest Ángel (portrayed by prolific actor Álex Angulo) who believes he has cracked the cryptogram that holds together the entire biblical book of Revelations. It's not just a book about the end of the world — it actually reveals the time the antichrist will be born, which is (of course) on Christmas Eve, in a perfect demonic parody of the birth of Christ. Ángel desires direct contact with the devil in order to ask him the location of the antichrist, so Ángel can kill him. To do so, he enlists the help of metalhead burnout record store clerk Jose María and famous television psychic Professor Cavan, who teach Ángel the ways of the occult as the trio becomes our “three wise men” in a perverted, slapstick hunt for the antichrist in the dark streets of Madrid. THE DAY OF THE BEAST is a fantastic warp of Christian cosmology that feels simultaneously reverent and irreverent. It couldn't have been made without the perspective of a writer/director obviously deeply immersed in Christianity, even as it evokes the music and aesthetics of a satanic metal underground to poke fun at cliché Christian moralizing. To analyze this week's film, we were excited to invite shot-on-video (SOV) filmmaker Brewce Longo, whose most recent film A CORPSE FOR CHRISTMAS (2022) also contains a unique fusion of Christmas, metal music, horror, and anarchic aesthetics. Brewce unpacks this unique horror comedy with us, gives us an insider look at his process as an up-and-coming SOV director, and recommends us his favorite SOV underground classics with explicitly Christian themes. Merry Christmas in July! Cue the tacky Santa earrings & Hallmark movies. I had to take a step back from my podcast the last couple months because shit got crazy in my personal life. My household got plague after plague, my oldest daughter had surgery, my sister & I were figuring out Father's Day without our dad, & my dog swallowed a fucking needle. I seriously cannot make this stuff up. But that's just life, right? It gets crazy & sometimes the crazy all happens in a silo. So for my first episode back I just wanted to sit and have a coffee with you all. Just like 2 girlfriends who haven't seen each other in far too long getting caught up in a Starbucks. I'm so happy to be back & I have so much kickass content planned for my f*ck it mamas. My question for this week is: what's your favorite Christmas movie? Comment in my social thread to let me know & you'll be entered into my monthly book raffle for July. Check out my daughters' business: Sisterly Bracelets Are you ready to live your life for you? Merry Christmas in July! There's a war on Christmas in this country. The two sides? Santa vs. the undead. Our favorite homeschool family The Wrights simply cannot stop churning out hits. They made 12 films in 2020 alone, so obviously we've barely scratched the surface, despite watching HALLOWEEN CANDYMARE on this podcast just two weeks ago. CHRISTMAS ZOMBIES is a zany action comedy featuring ambitious green screen editing and multiple original rap songs. The Wrights are serious about their Christian message — despite a plot focusing on Santa, elves, and zombies, they make several attempts to remind us that Jesus is the reason for the season. Ash and Scott use the opportunity of this discussion to dig into the ethos of DIY cinema and to defend the Wrights AT ALL COSTS against their nasty 1-star letterboxd reviewers. Ho, ho, ho! Merry Christmas in July, my dudes! Wait, I'm being told this isn't about that Rudolph. Eric Robert Rudolph spent more than his fair share of time on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted List (what, exactly, is a fair share of time on that particular list?) partially because of the heinousness of his four bombings - the most infamous of which took place at Centennial Olympic Park in the midst of the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta - and in part because his survival skills (and maybe some sympathetic locals) allowed him to elude capture for nearly a decade. This week, we look at his story. BUT FIRST! This Week in Murder takes an emergency look at the Highland Park mass shooting, a horrible discovery in a Texas Big Rig, and a domestic dispute turned armed standoff in rural Kentucky in This Week In Murder. And, as always, we finish things off with a game of Who Died The Worst! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/murdermydude/support

Today we introduce Pocket Pods! That's what we are calling our short segments of this week's podcast. Instead of doing a full interview, we connected with several people who are part of the Houston beer scene. We set up a table at Star Sailor during their Christmas Eve in July celebration and invited our guests to grab a craft beer, sit down, and answer three fun questions. Sometimes the conversation branched out to other fun topics. We started off with a Texas Beer Experience regular, Jeremy Moore, head brewer at Texas Leaguer, followed by the fabulous owner of Star Sailor, Marin Slanina. Then, we chatted with Abby Hime, Sales Rep for Great Heights, and the H-Town Beer Guys, Brett and Cole. Stellar conversations all around. Thank you, Star Sailor, for inviting us. Thank you, guests. It was a pleasure hanging out with you. And thank you, Galveston Island Brewing, for sponsoring us. Merry Christmas in July, everyone! Cheers! Merry Christmas in July, everybody! (And on behalf of the entire "Christmas Podcast Network", Merry Gerry in July!) Can you believe we're officially five months away from Christmas? This year is flying! As it tends to happen to the best of us around the holidays themselves, "Tis the Podcast's" Christmas in July plans were derailed this year! Originally, Anthony was writing an original radio drama with listener Rebecca Boll for the elves, their fellow Christmas podcast hosts, and other friends of the show to perform - but it didn't get finished in time. (Stay tuned for the actual Christmas season later this year!) And then, the elves wanted to put together a live-read of everyone's favorite Christmas film, "Elf", but due to miscommunication and scheduling conflicts, that plan fell through at the last minute. But, wanting to deliver something to all of y'all to mark the summer holiday today, Julia, Thom, and Anthony are joined by Gerry Davila of "Totally Rad Christmas", Todd Killian of "Christmas Clatter", Ron Hogan of "Film Strip Podcast", and Claude Bélanger of "Christmas Conversations" to honor Christmas in July! The result is the most chaotic conversation that has ever occurred in "Tis the Podcast's" four year run! Just some of the topics that come up in today's off-the-walls, hilarious episode (which is naturally filled with lots of trolling) include: True Crime (and Anthony's resulting paranoia) Thom's plans to "Cosby" Ron Claude's official "Tis the Podcast" initiation Christmas ornaments already bought by each of us this year Todd's ascension to the biggest troll of the "Christmas Podcast Network" "American Idol" Musicians - dead and alive - we wish would record (or had recorded) Christmas albums, in addition to all of the random celebrities who have released holiday records in the past (looking at you Rosie and Regis!) Gerry's theory that Donald Trump copied "Time Cop" to win the 2016 presidential election Actors we'd like to see play Santa Claus in a film one day (and actors who are no longer with us we wish had played him in a film before they passed) "The Winter Soldier" and "Zack Snyder's Justice League" All of our individual Top 4 Christmas films Ideas for how the "Christmas Podcast Network" can celebrate Halloween and Christmas later this year Julia's upcoming 39th birthday And all of that barely scratches the service, because there is much, much more discussed - and many quotes from "The Office" dropped - in this hilarious, beautiful mess of an episode that is nothing but banter! So settle in and relax by the pool with your favorite summer beverage, close your eyes, imagine the cold, winter days ahead that will be here before you know it as we fast approach the most wonderful time of the year, and enjoy this episode! And get excited, because there's plenty of fun stuff coming up on the show as well! This upcoming Monday, July 26th, we will be dropping our episode on the 2002 made for TV movie, “It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie”! And on Tuesday, July 27th, the elves will be joined by some very special, frequent and beloved guests (schedules permitting) to record another Double Feature of an episode, which will be dropping in your main feeds on Monday, August 2nd! We'll be discussing the one Christmas episode of HBO's “Curb Your Enthusiasm” (Anthony's favorite TV show of all time!) – Season 3, Episode 9: “Mary, Joseph and Larry” and the one Christmas episode of the TruTV comedy, “I'm Sorry” (One of Anthony's wife's, Sarah's, favorite shows of all time!) - Season 2, Episode 4: “Couple's Massage”! Before that drops in your feeds though, on Thursday, July 29th, you'll get to hear Chapter 26 of “Another Christmas Story” entitled “Hark the Herald Angel Sing”, which Adam Parker Sibun of “Merry Britmas” will be reading to y'all! Enjoy, y'all!
