From its characteristics to its places of origin and the people who spoke it, we have a lot to uncover. So, let's get started! To understand Old English, we need to travel back over a thousand years to the Anglo-Saxon period in England. Old English, also known as Anglo-Saxon, was the language spoken by the Anglo-Saxons, a group of Germanic tribes who settled in England during the 5th and 6th centuries. One of the key characteristics of Old English is its inflectional grammar. In Old English, nouns, pronouns, adjectives, and verbs changed their form to indicate their grammatical function in a sentence. For example, nouns had different endings depending on whether they were subject, object, or possessive. Old English vocabulary was predominantly Germanic but also included loanwords from Latin, Norse, and Celtic languages. Many words we still use today have their roots in Old English, such as "house," "father," and "love." Now, let's talk about the places of origin of Old English. As I mentioned earlier, it emerged when the Anglo-Saxon tribes migrated to England. These tribes, including the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes, hailed from what is now modern-day Germany and Denmark. They brought with them their language, which evolved over time into Old English. The dialects of Old English varied across different regions of England. The West Saxon dialect, spoken in the region around modern-day London, eventually became the standard form of Old English due to the influence of King Alfred the Great, who promoted it during his reign in the 9th century. Now, let's delve into the people who spoke Old English. The Anglo-Saxons were a diverse group of tribes, each with their own distinct cultural and linguistic identities. They settled in various parts of England, establishing kingdoms and communities. The Angles settled in the east and north, the Saxons in the south and west, and the Jutes in the southeast. These tribes had a strong oral tradition and storytelling played a significant role in their culture. Many of the Old English literary works, such as Beowulf and The Dream of the Rood, were composed during this period. These texts provide valuable insights into the language, beliefs, and values of the people who spoke Old English. However, with the Norman Conquest of England in 1066, Old English gradually gave way to Middle English, influenced by the Norman French of the ruling class. Over time, Middle English evolved into the Early Modern English we recognize today. And that concludes our journey into the world of Old English. We've explored its characteristics, discussed the places of its origin, and learned about the people who spoke it—the Anglo-Saxons. Kent consists of a small spur sticking out of the south-eastern tip of England. To its north lies the mouth of the River Thames and to its south it the English Channel. As the closest point between Britain and mainland Europe, Kent has always been an entry point into the British Isles. This means that it has often been a hub of international trade and communication, but it also means that it has one of the most vulnerable parts of England to invasion. The Kingdom of Kent that emerged here would serve as the entry point for wealth and new ideas to flow into England. The earliest history of Kent is mysterious, but what we can say demonstrates some of the major trends that shaped the course of Kentish history. Church History Part 10 Christianity Comes To Britain Origins In the 1st century AD, the island of Britain contained various religious practices based on both pagan and Roman gods. The Roman Empire was well established and Britain was the westernmost point of the Roman Empire. ~ Christianity was first bought to England, part of Britain, by travellers and traders using well known routes through the Roman Empire. As they travelled, they came with stories from pagan mythology, as well as the story of Jesus. However, nobody knows when Christianity first arrived in Britain, although one particular story purports that Joseph of Arimithea built a church in Somerset. Joseph, you may remember was put in charge of Jesus' body. ~ Sources Here are 4 quotes from ancient texts about Christianity being in Britain ~ Clement or Rome 96AD - “Paul also obtained the reward of patient endurance, after being seven times thrown into captivity… After preaching both in the east and west, he gained the illustrious reputation due to his faith, having taught righteousness to the whole world, and having come to the extreme limits of the west."~~~~~~ Tertullian 197 AD “By this time… [the name Christ has reached] the various confines of the moors, all the limits of Spain, the diverse nations of the Gauls, and the hunts of the Britons, inaccessible to the Romans, but subjected to Christ.” ~~~~~~ Eusebius, bishop of Caesarea in the early 300s records that "the apostles passed beyond the ocean to the Isles called the British Isles." ~~~~~~ Bede in Ecclesiastical History of England - “In the year of our Lord 156, Marcus Antoninus Verus … was made emperor, together with his brother, Aurelius Commodus. In their time, whilst the holy Eleutherus presided over the Roman Church, Lucius, king of Britain, sent a letter to him, entreating that by a mandate from him he might be made a Christian. He soon obtained his pious request, and the Britons preserved the faith, which they had received, uncorrupted and entire, in peace and tranquillity until the time of the Emperor Diocletian.” It must be said that there is however no further evidence from antiquity to back up this particular claim of Bede! British bishops were in attendance at various Church councils: in 314 at the Council of Arles; at the Council of Nicea in 325 and the Council of Rimini in 359. The first member of the British church we know of is St Alban. It is he who is said was martyred for his faith. More about him next time! Another person we will discover next time is St Patrick! He is perhaps one of the most famous names from these ancient times! During the 5th & 6th centuries, however, east Britain was invaded by the pagan Angles, Jutes and Saxons from northern Europe. As a result of this persecution, the Christian church in Britain was destroyed except for West Britain, Wales. Then in 597AD Augustine landed in Britain sent on a mission – to re-establish Christianity in Britain. He started it in the South near Canterbury and proceeded out from there. Deep feelings and endless thoughts of revenge captivated the young man's mind. For two weeks now, all he had thought about was the retribution he would inflict upon his captors when he got free, if he ever got free — something he knew would never happen.Just a fortnight ago the sixteen-year-old had been enjoying his fairly sheltered life as a Roman citizen on the west coast of Britain near the small town of Bannaventa Berniae. From all the comforts that came with having a father who was a local magistrate and living in a country villa with servants to do most of the work, mindlessly playing on the beach close to his home was only one of many leisurely activities. But in a flash without any warning, all the happiness and comforts were replaced by fear and hardship when Patricus was attacked by a gang of professional Irish slave raiders.It was efficient, violent, and traumatic.Rome had begun its decline a decade before; as a consequence its ships no longer secured the Western Sea surrounding the Celtic Islands. Without Roman rule, other ships were free to sail unmolested. As such, no political authority was concerned about Irish kidnappers. During the one-day journey across the sea, and now in iron shackles, all Patricus could think about were the stories he had heard as a child concerning the heathen culture of the Irish. While he never thought they were all true — how they would eat human flesh, shamelessly commit incest, and smear the blood of slain victims on their faces — he now seriously questioned them. As his kidnapping alone revealed, the Irish were not considered barbarians for nothing. And although Patricus claimed to be an atheist or just apathetic to Christianity, he couldn't help harboring bitterness towards his Christian parents and ironically, their God. The timeless question swirled in his maturing mind: How can a loving God allow evil things to happen? The fear of being forsaken incessantly bore upon his fragile conscience too, for Patricus really was alone. Most of the slaves taken by the Irish were women and children as most men were not easily secured. Patricus wasn't a boy, but he wasn't quite a man. And yet, it was in this time of his life, against the backdrop of Irish captivity, that God would forge something powerful within him — something so unexpected and so beautiful that it would not only change his destiny but the destiny of an entire pagan country.______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________But that was in the future. In the present, the very start of the the 3rd century, the only destiny Patricus was in charge of was the one hundred sheep he was made to shepherd in a cold and wet place somewhere on the west coast of Ireland. In coming to this new land it was like traveling back in time four hundred years. Although the primitive accommodations were difficult to get used to, it wasn't long after arriving that Patricus' anger surprisingly simmered down into a place somewhere between ambivalence and acquiescence. In the many days and nights that Patricus spend alone, the growing boy began to consider God, His will, His plan, and His love for the lost. But as he drew nearer to God, the shame of his past sins weighed heavily on him. One sin grieved Patricus in particular. With some time, though, he finally arrived at being at peace with God. He wrote about this process, “After I came to Ireland I watched over sheep. Day by day I began to pray more frequently — and more and more my love of God and my faith in him and reverence for him began to increase.”After six years of captivity, the twenty-two-year old was now a young man and had been forged into someone new. He was a new creation of sorts; the faith of his parents and grandparents had become his own. Fasting and praying were regular practices in his new life as a Christian. Looking back, Patricus wrote, “God used the time to shape and mold me into something better. He made me into what I am now — someone very different from what I once was,… before I was a slave, I didn't even care about myself.”And then on one unspectacular night, as Patricus was falling asleep, God clearly spoke to him in a dream saying, “You have fasted well — soon you will be going home.” Confused by this, as Patricus knew it was nearly impossible to escape and that the New Testament taught slaves to be obedient to their masters, he didn't immediately respond. But the next night God spoke again saying, “Behold, your ship is ready.” Putting aside all the questions and difficulties surrounding how a successful escape could actually happen, and there were many, Patricus succumbed to the conviction of God's leading. Simply put, if God spoke, then Patricus had to obey.But because no ships sailed to Britain from the west coast of Ireland, he would have to make the the 200 mile trek across the island. The arduous journey would take over a month to complete and would be slow and dangerous for anyone making the trip, let alone an escaped slave who had to avoid being seen. How he would get on the ship, and under what circumstances, were all unknown to Patricus. But as God called him to obedience, Patricus believed God would somehow provide a way — and He did. After getting on a ship, sailing for three days across the sea, and walking through Britain with the sailors for a few weeks, Patricus finally arrived to his home and to his family.“They took me in — their long-lost son — and begged me earnestly that after all I had been through I would never leave them again.”But although no one knew at the time, that was just what he was going to do.Once at home, after the many sweet celebrations and reunions with both friends and family, life for Patricus slowly returned to a comfortable normalcy. But that leisurely time didn't last for long. God spoke to Patricus again in another dream. Although this time it wasn't a call to leave Ireland, it was a call to return.The Irish were in much need of the gospel of Jesus as their island was cut off from much of the many other progressing civilizations. But it was the dream he received of the Irish people calling him back to walk among them that truly convicted Patricus to once again accept the strange but clear call of God. Once he resolved to preach the gospel to the people of Ireland, to the very people who kidnapped and made him a slave, Patricus believed he needed to undergo a theological education. Not only did he need this time of academic preparation to mature his faith and knowledge of the Lord, he needed some ecclesiastical weight behind him as he would be evangelizing alone in relatively uncharted and hostile territory. Within the church, Patricus most likely started as a layman and deacon, progressing to priest and finally being ordained as a bishop. After these years, Patricus, a more mature Christian servant, was ready to make his way back to the cold and wet lands of Ireland. Now not unwillingly as a slave for men, but willingly as a slave for Christ.While Patricus learned much about Irish civilization during his previous six-year stint, it seemed much had changed in the time he was away. As a slave and shepherd, Patricus was relatively distanced from the local wars and overall spiritual darkness of the landscape. The culture now awaiting him would be filled with feuding kings, political druids, and witches — many if not all their pretensions being opposed to the knowledge and rule of a Jewish rabbi, who claimed to be the Son of God. Thus, as is common in the Kingdom of Heaven, many of Paticus' first converts were societal outcasts, women and poor. In general, most tribal kings across the land were not receptive to the gospel or the Briton who brought it. Yet some were indifferent enough to allow churches to be built on their land. Season after season Patricus continued to travel throughout Ireland, preaching the gospel to anyone who would hear and planting house churches where he was received. Slowly and with much toil, Patricus was spiritually building the first body of Christ in Ireland. And as the years came and went, so did the decades.As an elderly man, the white-haired Patricus had now begun to baptize the sons and daughters of those parents he had converted years before. And as every generation presents its own unique and special challenges to the gospel, this one did as well. But from all the opposition Irish culture could throw at the British Bishop and to the Christian faith in general, the most hurtful and violent assault came not from their pagan hands, but from the hands of Christian tyrants from Patricus' own homeland.By 460 AD Rome was on its last leg — the empire was nearly all but collapsed. Britain was under attack on every front and from every direction. From the north and west, the Irish and Picts (Scottish) were pushing their raids south. From the east, German warriors were amassing in numbers. And from the south, around London, Saxons and Jutes had even begun building settlements. All these attacks from the outside were too much for the Britons to effectively and systematically handle. In this unprecedented time of political and social disarray, the old inhabitants of the island found themselves being protected from the foreign intruders by men of British-Roman nobility. As such, these men were Christian, although most were purely nominal. These few leaders who scraped together local armies and defended their communities against external threats became known as tyrants, warlords that protected their people with little to no oversight.For generations, the west coast of Britain was seasonally attacked by the barbarians from Ireland; but now tyrants, those specifically living on the west coast, not only wanted to force their enemies back but exact retribution for the years of unanswered assaults upon their people.The tide had turned.And during springtime, when the sea separating Briton and Ireland was calm, one particularly brutal tyrant named Coroticus began his offensive attack. The mission of the voyage was clear. Dock in an undivulged location, locate an unassuming clan, kill the men, and capture the women and children as cargo for slaves. The assignment was done efficiently and quickly. By the time Patricus was informed of the attack, Coroticus and those taken prisoner were already at sea. Upon hearing the news, Patricus found the place where his beloved flock had been attacked. It wasn't far from where many of them were baptized on Easter the day before. Some of the men of the group who had been murdered lay rigid, the oil on their forehead from being anointed still fragranced the spring air. Likewise, a number of women and children who had been baptized were certainly kidnapped in their baptismal robes.There was no lack of signs that these new converts traveling home were Christians, but that meant nothing to Coroticus and his mercenaries. Patricus was in between despair over the murder of his people and rage that it was brought by the hands of Christian soldiers from the place of his birth. In response, Patricus penned a letter to Coroticus and his men asking for it be circulated among the churches in Britain so the prisoners might be released. The letter was a heartfelt plea for divine justice, a stinging rebuke to Coroticus, and a petition for the church in Britain to excommunicate him. But after all of his attempts to pick up the pieces of his scattered flock, he couldn't change the fact that a small part of his clergy had been kidnapped and murdered. In the end, Patricus' only real and lasting hope was to be reunited with his spiritual sons and daughters in the next life, something not too far away for the aging Bishop.In the later years of his life, Patricus wrote two letters. The first was titled, Confessions, an account of his life and ministry and the other was A letter to the Soldiers of Coroticus, the plea for his people to be returned to their home. In both epistles we see the heart of Patricus, his deep humility, and the true love he had for the Irish people. Nearing death, In his Confessions, Patricus asked the Bishops in Britain that he be permitted to die among his flock in Ireland, even if it meant being buried in an unmarked grave. He wrote, “If I have ever done anything worthwhile for the God I love, I ask that I might be allowed to die here for his name with these converts and slaves — even if it means that I won't have a marked grave or that my body is torn apart piece by piece by dogs or wild animals or that I serve as a meal for the birds of the air.  I know if that were to happen, I would gain my soul along with a new body on that day we will undoubtedly rise again like the sun in the morning — like the son Jesus Christ our redeemer.” As such, the place of his burial is unknown, and even though we celebrate his life on March 17th, we only know that Patricus died sometime around 490 AD.While much of the details of Patricus' life are missing or obscure, the impact he made in Ireland, and the world for that matter, are crystal clear. His love for God and the people of Ireland, those considered barbaric and subhuman by many of the time and those who kidnapped him as a boy, remains an amazing testimony of what God can do with an obedient servant.As a young slave, Patricus was forced to shepherd sheep; but by the grace of God, he ended his long life as a willing shepherd of men. Like a true watchman, he protected and fed his sheep until the end. Patricus' example to us should move us to into a deeper place of love and service to all people – even those who seek our harm. Through it all — the kidnapping, the escape, the return, the trials, the hurt, and the suffering, Patricus never considered it a burden, but rather a gift. As he ended his Confessions, Patricus leaves us with these words.“My final prayer is that all of you who believe in God and respect him — whoever you may be who read this letter that Patrick the unlearned sinner wrote from Ireland — that none of you will ever say that I in my ignorance did anything for God. Anglo-Saxon Paganism or Anglo-Saxon Heathenry is a modern religion based on the ancient pagan tribal religions of the Germanic tribes that moved into what is now England in the 5th century. These tribes are generally thought to be the Angles, Jutes, and Saxons, although portions of other tribes such as the Frisians may have migrated also. It is therefore closely related to the ancient Norse pagan religion and shares many of the deities such as Odin (Woden) and Thor (Thunor).

We spoke with Jutes, a genre-bending artist who has such a unique sound. We discussed his latest song "Say It First", how he picks the singles that are released for his projects, and so much more! Currently signed to Capitol Records, Jutes is an artist who isn't afraid to take risks and experiments with a genuine and honest sound. His lyricism expresses the honesty and relatability to know we aren't as alone as we might sometimes feel. Be on the lookout for his EP, 'A Really Bad Dream', which drops October 22nd! Respect, skills and safety would top the list. Howard "Jute" Heffner was his that old mans name and he was more than a grandfather. He thought this young man all he could and made such an impact in his life that most of that young boy knowledge would be credited to Jute. When he was 15 years old his grandfather would teach him how to shift a pick-up truck. The shifter was on the steering column. It was called a three speed and its nickname was "three speed on the tree"! He would go on to teach him how to shift them semi trucks too. Jutes Death and Memory Howard would pass-on when that young boy became a man leaving a great impact in his life. The young boy had become a man and Jute was no longer there to guide him. He would now have to make his name in the trucking world as his grandfather had done. The young man would go on to drive tractor-trailer for a living, traveling the interstates throughout the lower 48 states and Canada. He would work in the casket and reefer industry learning, now by experience. Never forgetting that old man that had given everything to make sure that he would become a man fit to be called Jutes grandson. The Trucking Industry Trucking A Young Boy's Dream. If your dream is to be a trucker, you will be great. Trucking is a lifestyle and those that dream of it, are always great at it. For this young boy, a dream fulfilled. He would go on to drive a tractor-trailer for many years and then work with other truck drivers in an office. He would then go on to work in the industry in many aspects helping and promoting truckers in a positive manor. A dream completed. Lhes trago dois eventos singulares que, por um acaso do destino, poderiam ter mudado o destino da atual língua universal. Can you read this? Situação Histórica: O início de tudo se tem com os Celtas. Os Celtas foi um povo antigo, descendente dos habitantes da Europa na Era do Bronze e habitou vários locais, entre os quais Portugal, Espanha, Alemanha e Inglaterra (onde estavam estacionados por mais tempo) . Já com o Império Romano na Ilha da Grã-Bretanha, esse povo foi sofrendo influências cada vez mais pesadas, assimilando características do Latim a sua linguagem primitiva (chamada de Celta-Bretã) Palavras latinas naturalmente passaram a ser usadas para muitos dos novos conceitos. Devido às dificuldades em Roma enfrentadas pelo Império, as legiões romanas, em 410 A.D., se retiram da Bretanha, deixando seus habitantes celtas à mercê de tribos inimigas do norte (Scots e Picts). Uma vez que Roma já não dispunha de forças militares para defendê-los, os celtas, em 449 A.D., recorrem às tribos germânicas (Jutes, Anglos, Saxons e Frisians) para obter ajuda e estes invadem a ilha e lá se estabelecem, estruindo vilas e massacrando a população local. Os celtas-bretões sobreviventes refugiam-se no oeste. Prova da violência e do descaso dos invasores pela cultura local é o fato de que quase não ficaram traços da língua celta no inglês.  São desses povos que o Inglês irá nascer, misturando os dialetos Anglos e Saxões. Desde aquele tempo até hoje, essa língua sofreu muitas influencias e assimilações, podendo ser dividida em três fases: o Inglês Antigo, o Inglês Mediano e o Moderno. The song was performed by the 1970's progressive rock band, Emerson, Lake & Palmer on their album, Brain Salad Surgery.The opening lines are . . .And did those feet in ancient time -- Walk upon England's mountains green?And was the holy Lamb of God -- On England's pleasant pastures seen?A mysterious riddle for those not aware of the ancient legends surrounding Britain's entrance upon the Christian faith.For centuries England prided itself that the church there was founded by Jesus himself. This tale was invoked in British disputes with France over preeminence & in late Protestant claims that Rome had nothing to do with the English church. It's unclear how much the mystic, artist, and poet William Blake believed the tale, but his question remains famous.In the Council of Basel in 1434, the Council decreed, “The churches of France and Spain must yield in points of antiquity and precedence to that of Britain, as the latter church was founded by Joseph of Arimathea immediately after the passion of Christ.”Uh, huh?!!?Okay, so à We all know this is supposed to be a history podcast, not a wild, flight of fancy, let's repeated every crazy thing people have believed, podcast. So, why am I sharing this? It's illustrative of how many, maybe even most, of the churches of the ancient world laid claim to a special origin and identity. By way of illustration, let's look at the legends surrounding England's embrace of the Faith.According to well-established legend, Joseph of Arimathea, the Jewish leader who petitioned Pilate to bury Jesus' body, was also Mary's uncle. When Mary, Joseph and 12-year-old Jesus went to Jerusalem for Passover, it was at Uncle Joseph's place they stayed. Sometime later, Uncle Joe took the teenage Jesus on a tin-trading trip to Glastonbury, in England.Other legends put the adult Jesus in Glastonbury, using his constructions skills in making a house and working as a ship's carpenter. Older and even less reliable legends leave Jesus in Israel but send Uncle Joseph to Britain alone 30 years after Jesus' ascension.In the 12th Century, a monk named William of Malmesbury made a record of the history of the Church at Glastonbury. In the introduction added a century later, the story goes that the Apostle Philip sent Joseph & 11 others to Britain where they were allowed to build a church there. Then, after yet another century, John of Glastonbury said Joseph of Arimathea was an ancestor of King Arthur & bringer of the Holy Grail to England.Okay, enough of the legends. What is certain is Origen's reference to the Gospel having been received among the Britons in the early 3rd Century. And the faith hadn't just come there, it was widely accepted. Even the North African apologist Tertullian wrote in An Answer to the Jews some time around ad 200 that the Faith had taken root and was growing in Britain. The first church historian Eusebius notes that “some apostles passed over the ocean to what are called the British Isles.”In AD 43, 2 years after Claudius was hailed Emperor of Rome, 40,000 Roman soldiers finally achieved Julius Caesar's plan to invade Britain. Times had changed; Claudius invaded the island mainly because he could, and he needed the prestige of a military victory. Having landed on the coast of Kent, the legions subdued Wales and England, but found themselves overextended after a few victories against the Picts of Scotland.The British Celts adapted quickly to the lifestyle of their Roman conquerors. Celtic languages were abandoned in favor of Latin, and Celts began bowing to the gods of the Roman pantheon.It was because of this new Romanized British religion we learn the name of a British Christian: Alban.Alban was a pagan, but a friendly one. He welcomed a Christian priest fleeing persecution into his home. Which persecution is uncertain but the Anglo-Saxon church historian the Venerable Bede says it was under Diocletian at the end of the 3rd Century. It didn't take long for the priest's devotion to influence Alban. He renounced idolatry and put his faith in Christ. But no sooner had Alban knelt in prayer than soldiers appeared at the door, having been informed of the priest's location. The new convert swapped clothes with the priest. It wasn't until Alban was brought before the judge that his identity was revealed. The judge said Alban would bear the priest's punishment. He had only one out à to sacrifice to the idols. Alban refused.The judge asked, “What's your family and race?'Alban replied, “What does that concern you? If you want to know the truth about my religion, know that I'm a Christian and practice Christian rites.'The Judge blustered à “I demand to know your name!”Alban answered, “My parents named me Alban. And I worship and adore the living and true God, who created all things.”Again the judge ordered him to sacrifice to the pagan gods, & again he refused, saying whoever did so was “doomed to the pains of hell.” When beatings and whippings couldn't change his mind, he was sentenced to death.The story of Alban's martyrdom goes on. While it's difficult to sort out fact from legend, his tale gives us an idea of the high regard the martyrs were given in the Early Church. Supposedly on the way to the hill where Alban was to be executed, his guards were unable to cross a bridge because of the crowd that had gathered. So Alban parted the river as Moses had parted the sea. This was too much for his executioner, who instantly became a believer himself and joined Alban at the block where his head was removed from his shoulders.Alban became Britain's first, but by no means only, martyr. Turns out Alban & his former executioner weren't the only ones martyred that day. So were 2 others.One of the challenges historians face when reviewing the history of Christianity in England is the syncretism that often seems to mark its early years. Syncretism refers to the blending of different things. Religious syncretism is something the Church has had to deal with since its earliest days. In many places around the Roman Empire, while Christianity supplanted paganism, in a few places, pagan ideas and rituals were taken up and adopted by the Church. Old feast days were gutted of their pagan origin & made to represent Christian commemorations, and so on. It's in England such syncretism stands out. Several artefacts reveal that conversion out of paganism into a clear NT Christianity was a slow process. Pagans and Christians worshipped side by side in the same building in Kent. Several British churches were built in imitation of pagan temples and shrines. A mosaic in Dorset includes both pagan and Christian themes. The same situation appears in Ireland, where pagan and Christian statues are found side by side.While the assumption of most historians is that all this points to a syncretistic blurring of the lines between pagans & Christians, an alternative position sees the close proximity of pagan & Christian elements as evidence of a remarkable tolerance between the two groups. It may have been that the two groups shared the same location without conflating their faiths.In 314, 3 bishops from Britain: Eborius from York, Restitutus of London & Adelphius from Lincoln, attended a church council at Arles, in southern Gaul. The Council was called to decide the issue of the Donatists in North Africa, which we've dealt with in an earlier episode. It was at this council Donatists were officially labeled heretics. British bishops were also present at Sardica in 343 & Armininum 16 years later.That these British church leaders were able to attend these councils suggests they were organized early, well before Constantine's Edict of Milan. It also means they had contact with the Church on the Continent. Monasticism, which would find such a prominent place in England, was a product of the Church in North Africa.Monasticism came to England via the work of Martin of Tours. Martin was a military veteran from Hungary who, after his conversion to Christ, seems to have a hard time deciding whether he wanted to work in a church or a monastery. His real passion was evangelism. So he preached Christ to the unconverted & the asceticism of monastery-life to the already converted. One of those was a Briton named Ninian.Ninian's story, like so many from church history, is a shadowy tale clouded in legend. We're not even sure that's his real name. He was a missionary to the Picts in Scotland. Probably not the first to take the Gospel north of Hadrian's Wall, he was the first to get credit for it. Martin urged several masons to go with Ninian to build a monastery at Whithorn. Venerable Bede says it was named The White House. It became a center of monastic activity, drawing students from Ireland & Wales.Needing the legions to defend the empire from hostile Germanic tribes, in 407, Emperor Honorius recalled them to the Continent. Within just a few years, Roman rule of England was completely dismantled.  In less than a generation nearly all traces of Roman culture, from philosophy to architecture was in ruins. And while many of the native Britons rejoiced as the Eagle flew south, they certainly did NOT appreciate the consequences as wave after wave of invaders washed over the land. The Picts came south from their highland homes. Scots invaded from Ireland. You might say, “Wait - Scots are from Scotland, not Ireland.” And that's where a little known fact of history proves important. It wasn't called Scotland at that time. Scot was the word used for the Irish. When they invaded and settled among the natives of northern Briton, it became known as the Land of the Scots.The real change for Britain came when the Saxons invaded from Germany. Then the Saxons were flowed up by the Angles & Jutes from Denmark. Foreign cultures overran Britain, snuffing out the last vestiges of Roman culture. In the eastern region of the isle even Celtic culture nearly disappeared.But it wasn't just weapons that Saxonized & Anglicized the Britons. The British nobles who'd adopted Roman ways promptly “went-Saxon” so they could hang on to their social status. Immigration changed England's demographics. Yet despite the large numbers of Northern Europeans who made their way to Britain's shores, lots of ethnic Britons still inhabited 5th C England. Now without Roman infrastructure, life changed. Communication with the continent diminished. And with less interaction with Rome, the British church became insular. Older  historians emphasized this isolation, using it to explain the independent mindset that marked the Medieval English Church. But it turns out while communication did in fact fall off, it didn't cease altogether.So while monasticism boomed in England after the Romans departed, and it took on a distinctly English form, it wasn't utterly divorced from the monasticism practiced in the rest of Europe. And it wasn't long before Celtic monks went forth from their isolation to carry Celtic Christianity to the mainland.
