Joining Dr. Ron in this episode of "REJUVENAGING with Dr. Ron Kaiser" is Dr. Michelle Olson, a social gerontologist, nature-based creative arts therapist, certified forest therapy guide, and fervent advocate for the healing power of nature in enhancing mental and physical health. With a rich background in dementia care and gerontology, Dr. Olson shares her insights on the critical role nature plays in nurturing our health as we age.Driven by a deep-rooted affection for the natural world and an influential stint with World War II veterans, Dr. Olson pursued a career dedicated to exploring nature's therapeutic potential and the integration of the arts in the care of aging populations and those with dementia. The discussion is anchored in evidence showing the myriad ways nature benefits us physically, emotionally, and cognitively. We explore everything from the Japanese tradition of forest bathing to biophilic design's emergence in healthcare settings, emphasizing nature's essential role in health and recovery.: Dr. Michelle sheds light on the practice of forest bathing (Shinrin-yoku), a method of engaging deeply with forest environments to bolster health. This practice, whether pursued independently or with guidance, fosters a profound bond with nature and oneself. Dr. Michelle is founder and executive director of Evergreen Minds, a non-profit organization that champions the incorporation of nature and the expressive arts into dementia care. She stresses the importance of outdoor access and its beneficial effects on mood, behavior, and the general well-being of individuals living with dementia. Incorporating nature into everyday life: The conversation offers actionable tips for integrating nature into our daily routines, demonstrating that even in urban settings or through indoor plants, we can significantly enhance our mental health and aging experience. Dr. Michelle encourages everyone to discover the health benefits of nature for their own lives and communities. She offers a compelling viewpoint on the intersection of aging, dementia care, and the intrinsic benefits of nature engagement. Her advocacy and practical suggestions underscore how simple, nature-based practices can have a substantial impact on our health, contentment, and approach to aging. In wrapping up this insightful dialogue, Dr. Ron and Dr. Michelle motivate us to reconnect with the outdoors and recognize nature as a vital element for a vibrant, healthy life at any age.For more information on Dr. Michelle https://evergreenminds.org/https://www.linkedin.com/in/michelleolsonphd/ Hosted on Acast. Nature-based art therapist and founder and executive director of Evergreen Minds run community programs for communities, senior living, and healthcare professionals. About Michelle Dr. Michelle Olson is a lover of the outdoors and mindful and body-full practices. She is a social gerontologist, a licensed, board-certified creative arts therapist, a certified Montessori Dementia Care Professional, Certified Activity Consultant with a specialization in Memory Care and she is also a Certified Forest Therapy Guide. Michelle teaches about mental health and social issues in aging including ageism at Montana State University. During the pandemic, Dr. Olson founded a 501(c)(3) charitable organization called Evergreen Minds, Inc. which aims to reframe stigmas associated with dementia by connecting people in and outside of senior living who are living with dementia with Vassar College students and members of all ages in the Hudson Valley and New York City. This is done through a wide variety of meaningful dementia-inclusive experiences in and with nature and expressive arts. Key Takeaways Creative arts therapies like visual arts, music, drama, and dance are valuable approaches for helping people living with dementia amidst changes in verbal communication. People with dementia rarely have opportunities to express their emotions and receive validation. Spending time in nature has physical, mental, and cognitive health benefits. Natural elements bring people together and provide opportunities for deeper connections with the earth, healing, and expression. The most common barriers that keep older adults from getting outside, particularly in senior living, are staffing challenges, safety concerns and temperature. Many senior living communities are not structured for residents to get outside. There is a fear of taking risks and team members are not even supported. Time in nature makes us less depressed and anxious and more empathic, creative and grateful. Nature gives us what we need in that moment. Ageism and ableism are at the systemic root of issues in senior living and home care Segregating people from the rest of society eliminates daily opportunities for intergenerational connections.
Nature is medicine. How do we harness the power of nature and our environment for our older adults and family caregivers? Joining us today is Dr. Michelle Olson, the founder of a charitable organization called Evergreen Minds, which aims to eradicate ageism and ableism. She reconnects communities through intergenerational and dementia-inclusive experiences and nature in expressive arts. Dr. Michelle has dedicated over 25 years to closely working with older adults in various senior living settings. I'm so happy she is joining us today. Her credentials include being a social gerontologist, a licensed board-certified nature-based creative arts therapist, a certified Montessori dementia care professional, a certified activity consultant, and a certified forest therapy guide. In this conversation, we explore the healing power of nature and how we can better connect with our natural world. We also talk about the impact of being a family caregiver and how it shapes our views on aging. Michelle shares her experiences with American Society on Aging and the Art Against Ageism initiative. Together, we address misconceptions about aging in our society and discuss the benefits of nature and forest therapy for older adults and their caregivers. Michelle shares how to incorporate nature and outdoor spaces into senior living environments and homes to enhance health and wellness. We explore ways to create dementia-friendly environments and combat associated stigma. Providing support for family caregivers facing exhaustion and burnout is another critical topic. Michelle shares with us with her successful programs and initiatives that utilize nature to benefit older adults and caregivers. We also touch on promoting equitable access to nature, especially for low-income or marginalized communities. If you're looking to integrate nature into your daily life, we discuss where to begin. Thank you Michelle for sharing your light with us! I'm beyond excited to share your work with everyone. *This episode is brought to you by Gigi Betty co. We are very excited to finally share with you Marnie's debut memoir, My Song, Unleashed. About the Book: As a child, Marnie's unique voice earned her the nickname “The Rasp” from her dad. When other adults told her she'd never be a singer or that she talked too much, not only did Marnie start silencing herself, but she also began questioning her internal voice. She knew when she shared her truth—the way she'd done during a schoolwide presentation as a teen—it was life- changing. But more often, like many young women trying to make their way in the world, she muted and molded herself to accommodate others. It wasn't until she traveled abroad and created a life far from home that she started finding her way back to her inner voice. And as she continued to explore the globe and connect with nature and with others, she discovered her inner voice was amplified. In her memoir, “My Song, Unleashed,” Marnie Dachis Marmet takes readers through her journey of personal transformation. From the painful experiences that make her question everything to the beautiful revelations that bare the truth, Marnie ultimately shares what every woman needs to know: When you pay attention to and trust your voice, it leads you to what you truly want and value and, ultimately, what makes your heart sing. In today's episode we discuss: Marnie's journey on writing and completing her memoir We also dive into different parts of the memoir and how they pertain to Marnie's life today No spoilers here :) In "My Song, Unleashed," Marnie Dachis Marmet opens her heart and shares her deeply personal experiences, inviting readers into her world of triumphs, challenges, and self-reflection. The honesty and vulnerability with which she writes create an immediate connection, making this book a truly transformative read. Pre-order a copy of Marnie's memoir today. In this episode I speak with artistic director, dancer and choreographer Michelle Olson about the transformation that can happen when we're truly seen. Together we talk about the process of witnessing and being witnessed as an essential part of becoming ourselves and community belonging. Forest bathing...What an incredible concept. No, it's not exactly what you're thinking. We aren't taking baths in the forest, however, I'm sure one could be worked in. We are looking at the benefits of connecting our older adults, especially those living with Dementia to the outdoors. We are truly blessed to have Dr. Michelle Olson, Founder & Executive Director of Evergreen Minds joining us today. Dr. Olson is a social gerontologist, a licensed, board-certified, and registered creative arts therapist, a certified dementia care consultant, a certified Montessori Dementia Care Professional, and a Certified Forest Therapy Guide. Dr. Olson was inspired by her father, Dr. Lee Olson, who was a plant biochemist and encouraged her to appreciate and respect all of nature (weeds, bugs, and all!) So what is Forest Bathing? According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, Americans spend about 90% of their time indoors and the concentration of air pollutants can be 2 to 5 times higher than out in nature! Shinrin-yoku or ‘Forest Bathing' is the evidenced-based practice of spending time in the woods. Now let's talk about the physiological health benefits of being in nature! Decreases inflammation Increases immune system Improves cardiovascular health Reduces stress, depression, and anxiety Improves sleep Lowers blood sugar Boosts parasympathetic nervous system (which makes us feel so good!) Dr. Olson and her team have an incredible mission to offer people living with dementia opportunities for meaningful connections and pathways to physical, social, and emotional well-being through mindful immersions in nature and expressive arts. #seniorcare #arttherapy #nature #forestbathing #getoutside #seniorliving #dementia #dementiacare #dementiaawareness #outside #expressiveart #caringforothers #innature
So what sort of leadership capability can we expect from someone who grew up in less than ideal circumstances? When it comes to the story of Michelle Olson of Molson Coors, that leadership capability has had her climbing the leadership ranks pretty effectively. She leads with a servant mindset and looks to support people in ways that she never had as she was growing up. Check out the rest of the story on this episode. Music Credit: Maarten Schellekens - Riviera
Growing up in a very blue-collar and sometimes unsupportive home, Michelle shouldn't have risen to where she is today. It was the influence of a teacher early on that lit the spark which propelled her to a career in IT. That sounds simple enough but this isn't the story of an easy journey. This is a story about growing up in a broken home with limited role models and despite it all climbing out of adversity. Music Credit: Maarten Schellekens - Riviera
Michelle Olson, PhD, LCAT, ATR-BC, ACC/MCFounder, Executive Director www.evergreenminds.org Verla's website https://treesmendus.comVerla's new book Optimize Your Heart Rate: BalanceYour Mind and Body With Green Space. Verla's previous book Take Back Your Outside Mindset: Live Longer, Stress Less, and Control Your Chronic Illness1:19 Michelle Olson is a social gerontologist, who started as a creative arts therapist with WWII vets who had serious mental health and dementia. Expressive arts include visual arts, music, dance and drama.05:15 What makes the difference is the ability of people who are experiencing mental difficulties to communicate in different ways. 6:21 Michelle Olson: "When people lose the ability to talk... they can still move their bodies and use their senses -- as ways to connect and feel better."7:19 Michelle Olson: "to do this as a family member -- we sometimes make it harder than we need to make it. It is the simple things sometimes the activity might be -- being together outdoors. Here we might spend time noticing the leaves or the light, the shadows, the textures....7:38 Maybe its the smell in the air 7:49 Sometimes I do forest therapy with clients and we turn around and notice things in different directions. Eg what does this acorn feel like? Maybe you can make a nature sculpture - something that will recreate this time together. 8:47 Maybe a person does want to make a painting - then I focus on the process - maybe that product is interesting. Or maybe they want to make a poem - it might rhyme or it might not. It is the whole process of connecting that matters. 09:58 As a social gerontologist I am interested in where we live and what we do across out whole lives....how we eat, how we move, how we socialize, how we interact with the world, do we feel safe..10:17 When I was an arts therapist that is when the light really went on...I wanted to know more about aging. In social gerontology we look at the person holistically over the course of their lives. The field of gerontology is growing, there are financial gerontologists, environmental gerontologists... we need to know all these perspectives.14:00 We often don't think about environment when we think of aging. United Nations just declared access to a healthy environment a human right. We don't question why we keep patients and older people inside. Dr Allen Power says balance the risk of safety and keeping people away from natural spaces. We can ask staff - to honour these older people with dementia the option to go out everyday. Paul Falkowski PhD says It is matter of changing behaviour and involving volunteers. 24:11 Evergreen Minds Foundation - brings people together through expressive arts and green space - helps educate staff and society. We are thrilled to welcome Sara Whicher and Marcy Townsend the co-founders of Chisel Architecture. The team at Chisel provides architectural custom design and a custom process. In their award-winning work while with Midwest-based design firms, eight years together at two firms and seven years at four additional firms, they've acquired an incredible breadth of expertise. They have a track record of proven success as lead designers and project managers with honed technical skills in material specs, drafting, construction documentation; and intuitive personal skills in client and consultant management and communications. Marcy and Sara are dedicated client advocates from start to finish. This means that their problem-solving skill sets are always engaged and they shape conversations around the intimacy of design. It means they fully understand the symbiotic relationships between the homeowner who will live in and love their space, the talented craftspeople who contribute exquisite detail, agile builders who modify with flexibility, and lead architects and designers who orchestrate the entire project to make it sing. Chisel Architecture created a unique process they coined The Pattern of Life, which really sets their firm apart. This three step process brings out their clients preferences, routines and ways of being every day so that they can live well. We had so much fun talking with Sara and Marcy and learning about the very personalized process, called Pattern of Life, that they go through with all of their clients. We learned that what sets Chisel Architecture apart is how they really listen to their clients, they watch people's body language and ask questions so that their clients get the results they want to enjoy their life in the new space. We can't wait for you to experience how enjoyable, fun and fulfilling the architectural and design process can be for a homeowner, whether it's a new home or a smaller remodel. Even if you're not looking to embark on a project right now, you will learn so much from this conversation as Sara and Marcy share their tips for anyone who is thinking about making even the smallest change to their space. Chisel architecture has a special offer for our listeners. Simply email hello@chiselarch.com and mention this podcast to receive $50 off your two-hour consultation. Consultations must be booked by June 30th to take advantage of this offer. At the time we recorded this episode, Chisel Architecture was working toward having the home in mentioned in the podcast conversation on the Artisan Tour. Today's guest is Dr. Michelle Olson. Michelle is a Social Gerontologist and Creative Arts Therapist currently based in New York, and she's worked extensively as a consultant to aged care providers and individuals throughout the US to help them provide better more appropriate care for elders. Of particular interest to Michelle are the benefits that time in nature and participation in the arts can bring to older adults especially those living with dementia, and she recently founded a not for profit called Evergreen Minds to offer some group activities that embrace these elements. In this episode we dig quite deep into Michelle's practices with arts and nature, as well as some more specific information about the American Aged Care system and some of the challenges she's seen in furthering a person centred approach. We hope you enjoy this interview with Dr. Michelle Olson. For more information on Evergreen Minds, please visit: https://evergreenminds.org/ The Aged Care Enrichment Podcast is brought to you each week by https://silvradventures.com.au/ (SilVR Adventures) and available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts from. Today's guest is Samantha Shvetzoff, who is the owner of Healing Elements Studio in St. Paul, MN. Samantha is a mother and wife, a facilitator of community spaces and a meditation and mindfulness guide who loves people and stories. Since giving birth to her son nearly two years ago, she has been re-informing her own identity and story and is passionate about holding space for humans to integrate the widely vast resources available to live in divine wholeness. Samantha has truly done the work on herself and her calm and lovely demeanor will inspire and motivate you to begin your own journey of living in the present moment and create opportunities for stillness in your life. She encourages individuals to lean into vulnerability, and to cozy up into the spaces that need nurturing with inquiry and a desire to live your authentic truth. She believes that humans are deeply disconnected from our inherent connected nature and that wholeness is our birthright. She leans into the practices of meditation, yoga nidra, mantra, somatics and relies on mindfulness as a lifestyle to create foundational and functional change. She is fascinated with recalibrating the nervous system and challenging our current structures within the body, mind and emotional systems. She encourages folks to show up to their beliefs, patterns of thought and the way they occupy space with inquiry to uncover wholeness, which is often deeply submerged beneath layers that are no longer serving the self or the collective universal energy of love. Healing Elements is a unique space of healing and source of connectedness. It is Samantha's dharma to maintain this space for her community and for the larger collective of humanity. She believes deeply in her core that the transformational practices of yoga, meditation, movement, massage therapy, energy healing, herbal medicine and so many other ancient healing techniques all carry infinite opportunity to heal humans, create wider circles of connectedness and bring you closer toward love. You can find Samantha and Healing Elements on: IG: https://www.instagram.com/healingelementswellness/ FB: https://www.facebook.com/healingelementswellness/ Special offers: Due to COVID-19 Healing Elements is currently online.
