Why does higher education matter? Hardly a day passes without reference to some scandal, fraud or failure associated with American academic institutions, and there are few more important stories to be told in America right now than this one. Anthony is joined by Tuft's Professor Emeritus Sol Gittleman to discuss his new book, The Accidental Triumph: The Improbable History of American Higher Education. Sol reflects on his many years of leadership at Tufts University discussing whether American higher education is a disaster as it is sometimes painted, or really the great envy of the world. Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Episode #210: Andrea Gittleman's deep familiarity with Myanmar spans 15 years, and is rooted in her work with the Burma Lawyers' Council in Mae Sot. With meager resources, the council educated Burmese migrants on their labor rights in Thailand while documenting atrocities back in Myanmar. Witnessing the regime's grim human rights record firsthand, Gittleman embarked on a mission to garner international momentum for a commission of inquiry.Today, as the policy director for the Simon-Skjodt Center for the Prevention of Genocide, Gittleman is able to draw on her Myanmar expertise, as the center has been tracking violence against the Rohingya since 2013. The museum's current Rohingya exhibit aims to make the tragedy tangible, urging introspection on missed opportunities to prevent genocide and ongoing human rights abuses. The impactful influence of the exhibition resonated in Washington as U.S. Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, credited his 2022 visit to the museum for informing his solemn declaration that the military's brutal atrocities met the legal definition of genocide. Gittleman emphasizes that the determination, while certainly not a cause for celebration, serves as a crucial catalyst for political momentum and the potential protection of innocent lives at risk.“We want to make sure that we're doing what we can to share this information with the public and those who are able to spread it within their networks,” she says in closing. “We're trying to keep momentum going and keep a focus on the plight of people at risk of atrocities across Burma, and doing what we can to make sure that that policy conversations can continue to take that with the utmost seriousness.”

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones had the biggest ska-punk hit of the '90s. Their song "The Impression That I Get" was huge and made them legit stars for a while. But they were a band that earned it. They got their start in the 80s, signed to Taang Records in 1989, got a major label deal in 1993 and released several records before hitting it big with their 1997 record Let's Face It. Not to mention, they were a huge influence on the sound of US ska-punk in the 90s. Today, we talk to The Mighty Mighty Bosstones' bassist Joe Gittleman (aka the Bass Fiddleman). He tells us stories from the Bosstones year, working at SideOneDummy in the 2000s, producing Big D and the Table's "Strictly Rude" record, playing in Gang Green and he gives us his side perspective regarding The Bosstones' breakup last year. He also talks about playing Lollapalooza in 1995, quitting drinking, and Bouncing Souls covering his song "Lean On Sheena" from his other band Avoid One Thing, and how the song ended up being one of the Souls most popular songs. We talk about Brian Fallon and Gaslight Anthem's landmark record The 59 Sound, playing Warped Tour and the significance of seeing Fishbone play in the 80s. Plus we talk about Joe's upcoming Wavebreaker release on Bad Time Records with the great Bad Operation. They may occur alongside other conditions like PANS, PANDAS, ADD, and autism. In today's episode with Maria Rickert Hong, we'll be diving into learning and discussing more about sensory processing disorder and how we could resolve it through natural means. What makes us suspend belief and put the fire in our belly?Maria has a son who had many health issues and they weren't getting good responses from his pediatricians. Her son also had sensory issues that hit him when he was about three years old and which prompted them to seek more help. However, the doctors tend to provide several different medications. Her awakening moment was when she had her own health problems while taking care of her son who would wake up five or six times a night, go to her room, and wake her up. She developed severe adrenal fatigue and had hormonal-related problems. Upon searching for natural sleep remedies, she came across a book of a nutritionist author, Ann Louise Gittleman, entitled Before the Change: Taking Charge of Your Perimenopause. In the book, Gittleman offers a wide range of options for taking care of yourself which helped Maria a lot.Cutting out the dairy for Maria's son.Cutting out the dairy made quite an impact on Maria's son. Her son's asthma, constipation, allergies, eczema, and sensory issues all got better.Maria started using a cookbook that offers kid-friendly recipes and they're mostly gluten-free and dairy-free. It also has other potential allergens that kids could be sensitive to. Maria got into cooking and kept going from there. You have to do diet, you have to eat.Nobody wants to hear it but you have to diet. You don't have to instantly shift to doing an extreme diet. Like what I always tell my clients, let's do some minor things if we can. And if we can't, we wait until we calm the brain first and then, we start stripping it down. Many choose that option because they're in a crisis which is totally understandable. You gotta do triage first. However, people should always keep in mind how impactful a diet is. And I think once people realize how beneficial it is, they'll be more motivated to continue with it. In an interview with Dr. Terry Wahls conducted by Maria, she learned that Dr. Wahls has recovered herself from secondary progressive multiple sclerosis. In fact, Dr. Wahls was already told that there was nothing the doctors could do except medications. Fortunately, Dr. Wahls discovered functional medicine and tweaked her paleo diet to get all the nutrients that are helpful for mitochondrial function. Now, you can't tell she's had multiple sclerosis; she's fully mobile.Neurofeedback is a level one intervention for ADHD.Seeking treatment...

Tessa “Tess” Gittleman, MA, LMFT, is a Relational Therapist, Public Speaker, and System's Coach currently working at her private practice, Talk Tutor, PLLC, in Golden Valley, MN. Tess' background is eclectic, working in Advertising, Food Media, and with incarcerated populations before a chronic health diagnosis forced a pivot. Tess realized what she really loved was connecting to people in meaningful ways, and decided to become the one thing she said she never would: a therapist. After pivoting to mental health, Tess worked across residential and school-based settings, providing services to people across a variety of backgrounds, from queer to conservative, seven to seventy five, individuals and groups. She specializes in helping people who are “acutely aware of the problem” but feel helpless to change it despite outward success. These people often identify as perfectionistic, anxious, and/or with Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder. Her approach can best be described as collaborative, transparent, and humorous, borrowing from Existential, Narrative, and Internal Family System's approaches.  In addition to her clinical and coaching work, Tess is the Treasurer of the Minnesota Association of Marriage and Family, and is currently working towards being an AAMFT Approved Supervisor under the supervision of Dr. Alex Iantaffi, LMFT, and Shawn Neel, LMFT. As a supervisor, Tess specializes in providing clinical support to clinicians who struggle with chronic illness, or are struggling with clients who can't be “out-smarted.” Eric Fawcett, M.A., is a postgraduate, pre-licensure Marriage & Family Therapist. Eric specializes in assisting clients to bridge seemingly irreconcilable parts of themselves, and bridge what feel like irreconcilable differences with others. Before pursuing his MFT degree, Fawcett spent three decades as a recording artist, as a creative entrepreneur partnering with major corporations, and as a published writer and speaker addressing the relational joys and challenges of the collaborative process. Fawcett has long believed that the training MFTs receive prepares them to work with people-systems far beyond couples and families. In his private practice, Eric works not only with individuals and families, but also with organizations seeking to increase trust and cohesion among its members. Eric is thrilled to be partnering with Tess Gittleman in the creation of Attunement Architects, a practice committed to improving the relational health of organizations of all kinds, from businesses to spiritual communities to universities.Links From the Episode:Tess's Website: www.TalkTutor.org Tess's email: Tess@TalkTutor.orgMore about Eric at his private practice website: www.attunerelational.comContact Eric at eric@attunerelational.comJoin the Twin Cities Wellness Collective™: https://www.tcwellnesscollective.com/

One friend simply said she doesn’t want to depend on coffee to get through her day. I can give up a lot of things if I need to, but coffee would be really hard for me! What is your opinion on the pros and cons of coffee? I either drink it black, or with a little cream. Tricia in Vienna   18:11 - Q: I live right behind a police station, and recently received a letter that some heavy metals were found on site and in the water. The letter recommended that all residents with a ½ mile radius have their ground water well tested for contaminates, and said that the City Health and Public Works Department will come out and test this for free. None of my neighbors seem to be freaking out about this, but I am. Have you heard of something like this before? I have scheduled my appointment, which is a few weeks out. In the meantime, should I be avoiding my water? Drinking it, showering in it, etc. And there are the what if’s after the Health Department comes out…if they say the water is safe, should I continue business as usual, and if it is not safe, what should I do? HELP! Courtney in Virginia Beach     21:04 - Q: My mom had gallbladder issues in her 40s, and had to have it removed after a lot of pain and complications. I want to do things that promote good gallbladder health so that I can keep mine as long as possible. What kinds of foods should I be eating or avoiding, and are there any supplements that you recommend? Tracie in Winston Salem   22:55 - Anonymous Question   23:55 - Q: I deal with hypothyroidism, and have recently been learning how that is related to my bile and gallbladder. It’s all so confusing, I am trying to figure out if my gallbladder is causing thyroid issues or my thyroid is causing my gallbladder issues, but I keep hearing people talk about how I need to create healthy bile! Can you talk about how these two are related (the thyroid and the gallbladder), and the role of bile? Rose in Destin   27:16 - Q: I recently heard a doctor on another podcast talking about olive oil. He said it is the best thing ever for us, and that we can’t get enough of it, that we should be putting it on everything that we eat! I was wondering if you agree with this, first of all, and also, if there is such thing as too much healthy fats. Will the hurt my gallbladder? Kim in Ohio   30:53 - Q: I tried to give blood today, and the nurse on the bloodmobile told me that my iron was too low. This is the first I’ve heard of this being an issue for me! What are some things I can do to improve my iron? -Lexi in Norfolk   32:10 - Q: I eat really healthy, work out 5x week, have been doing Intermittent Fasting in about a 6 hour window, but I am still really tired! Everything seems to be fine except my Ferratin levels are low, while my iron is normal. What is the difference in iron levels and Ferratin levels, and could this be what is making me tired? Sarah in Providence   40:44 - Q: My thyroid is getting a little better since I’ve been fasting, but my numbers still aren’t back to normal.  My doctor has said that I am low in iodine, and that I can get iodine in dairy. But I thought dairy wasn’t good for my thyroid? I am so tired of this conflicting information! What can I do to raise my iodine levels and should I be eating dairy? Becky in New York   43:24 - Q: I have been really trying to follow the 80/20 principle and have cleaned up my diet a lot, even getting rid of dairy and gluten but my Psoriasis and eczema are still out of control. Do you have any other tips I can try?  - Anonymous   --------------------------------------- To learn more about the principles of intermittent fasting, purchase Chantel's book, Waist Away: The Chantel Ray Way NOW by visiting http://amzn.to/2CVmTgs YouTube Channel Link: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCteFjiVaY6n0SOAixcyZbWA Like us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/TheChantelRayWay     Things we love: https://chantelrayway.com/things-i-love-2/  Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheChantelRayWay   ***As always, this podcast is not designed to diagnose, treat, prevent or cure any condition and is for information purposes only. Ann Louise Gittleman is an award-winning and New York Times best-selling author of over 30 books on a variety of topics, including weight loss, diet, and detoxification. Her most recent book, Radical Metabolism: A Powerful New Plan to Blast Fat and Reignite Your Energy in Just 21 Days, relies on the premise that the gallbladder is not a throw-away organ; it is an essential one that's connected to the health of the thyroid gland and metabolism.  Dizziness, radiating leg pain, and insomnia is just a few of the seemingly unrelated symptoms that can occur after gallbladder removal, but how do we compensate for this loss, and how can we prevent removal, to begin with? Gittleman offers answers to these questions and many more. Her theory that there is a critically important connection between the gallbladder, the thyroid and metabolism are backed by Harvard researchers who found that people who improved their gallbladder health saw a 53 percent increase in metabolism. An additional study out of Finland showed that people who have reduced bile flow are seven times more likely to suffer from hypothyroidism.  Gittleman discusses a range of topics, including the right and wrong types of high-fat diets, why some people might want to stop drinking kombucha, green, and white tea, and the effect of electromagnetic radiation on cortisol levels--something she refers to as “electropollution.” Tune in for a compelling and eye-opening discussion, and visit radicalmetabolism.com for more information and free downloads.

When I was growing up, my parents always bought Low-Fat versions of everything, I’ve always tried to avoid fats like the plague! But now I hear more and more people talking about fats being healthy for you, which is just hard for me to understand. What makes fat healthy? And what are some of the best sources of fats I should be eating? -Molly in New York Q2 - 10:38 Q: I am so excited for Dr. Gittleman to come on the podcast because I want to talk to someone about perimenopause. I am only 40, but I have noticed over the past year or so my period has become very erratic. I’ve been pretty consistent with my period my whole life. Another thing I’ve noticed is a major decrease in my sex drive. 40 seems a little young to me to be going through the change already, none of my girlfriends seem to be experiencing the same thing. My gyno says that everything is normal. Is this early to be transitioning into menopause? What are some foods that I can eat, supplements I should take, things I should be doing to make the transition go more smooth? -Jeanette in Knoxville Q3 - 12:34 Q: I am 45 and I think that I am in the early phases of Menopause. I am debating the pros and cons of Hormone Therapy. My Doctor is really pushing it but I have read some opposing viewpoints online. What is your opinion? I am also curious, when can I safely stop taking birth control? -Mary in Delaware Q4 - 15:41 Q: After reading your book, I am working really hard to cut back my sugar. I am so shocked as I learn more about all the things that have hidden sugars! What are some tricks I can use to spot out these hidden sugars, and some keywords I should be looking for when I am scanning labels? I don’t have time to do a deep dive research on every single food I eat! -Olivia in Newport News Q5 - 17:35 Q: I went to the Doctor for a hemorrhoid, which is embarrassing, and he told me I wasn’t getting enough fiber. I eat a good bit of kale, arugula, and broccoli, and think my diet is pretty well rounded. Should I be taking a fiber drink? What are some other foods I should be eating? Unfortunately, I get hemorrhoids at least once a year, and I really want to know what I should be doing to prevent them. -Anonymous Q6 - 21:42 Q: I recently had weird aches and pains in my arms and legs and something that I read online told me I needed to increase my salt intake. I drank some salt water and immediately felt better, it was so odd! I am confused because I usually hear that I need to stay away from salt and sodium, esp if I am trying to lose weight. But as I started reading more online, I am finding that a lot of diets, esp the Keto diet, encourage salt. I feel really puffy when I eat a lot of salt and can’t imagine it is good for you. What’s the verdict? -Terri in Long Beach Q7 - 23:05 Q: I have figured out by the process of elimination that my body really doesn’t respond well to dairy. I cut it out a couple months ago and I feel so much better, my skin has cleared up, I have more energy, and I am much more regular in the bathroom. I keep going back to the commercials that say “Milk does a body good”…growing up it was hammered in me that we needed to drink milk for calcium. What are some good ways that I can be sure I am getting calcium without cutting out milk? -Brenda in Lynchburg Q8 - 24:16 Q: Can you explain the difference in Saturated Fats and Unsaturated fats? Am I supposed to be eating both of these? How many fats should I have each day? -Katie in Lexington Q9 - 26:04 Q: As you suggested in the podcast, I am waking up in the morning and I am taking my blood sugar and it ranges from 95-100 in the fasted state. I’ve read different things online that say this is considered pre-diabetic, and others that say this is normal- what are your thoughts? Should I be concerned, and what should I try to do in order to lower this naturally? -Tammy in Grand Rapids Q10 - 28:42  Q: I went to a Kinesiologist that my friend recommended to me, and he said that I have a lot of toxic metals in my body. I don’t really understand what this means. How did I get them, and what are some things I can do to get rid of them? Is there a way that I can test the metals myself? -Andrea in St Petersburg  Q11 - 30:40 Q: My husband refuses to use my “hippy” toothpaste as he calls it, and I can’t get him to try a non-fluoride toothpaste. Do you think it is a big deal to use non fluoride toothpaste? I have gotten a little paranoid lately and am concerned about the Fluoride levels in the water at my house as well. Should I be? -Kim in St Louis  Q12 - 32:48 Q: I am in Real Estate (like you!) and so as you can understand, I am ALWAYS on my cellphone. I’ve been reading about EMF poisoning lately and it is starting to freak me out. Am I better off talking on speaker phone, or using headphones? -Cara in South Carolina   --------------------------------------- To learn more about the principles of intermittent fasting, purchase Chantel's book, Waist Away: The Chantel Ray Way NOW by visiting http://amzn.to/2CVmTgs YouTube Channel Link: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCteFjiVaY6n0SOAixcyZbWA Like us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/TheChantelRayWay     Things we love: https://chantelrayway.com/things-i-love-2/  Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheChantelRayWay   ***As always, this podcast is not designed to diagnose, treat, prevent or cure any condition and is for information purposes only. A few years ago, every author in America became jealous simultaneously. Not only had my friend, Dr. Ann Louise Gittleman written a best selling book, entitled FAT FLUSH, but it had sold over one-million copies and had hit the NY Times bestseller list quickly! I was amazed that people didn't know how important fat was in their diets, and I was proud of Dr Gittleman for capitalizing on that fact. Well, she is back with another book that is destined to become another bestseller! EAT FAT, LOSE WEIGHT is a diametric title when it comes to the medical community, who for decades taught us that fat made us fat! "Nonsense", says Dr. Gittleman, weight loss is probable if you eat the right fats as itemized in this important book! Dr. Gittleman visited our studio last week and she was kind enough to take an extra 20 minutes after taping TV shows, to dispel the "whole grain-weight loss" myth that has prevailed for far too long! You'll love this PodCast and your waistline will, too!

Listener Q&A: I answer the following questions  in the May 13, 2009 free audio episode: From Listener Ron: "I see the value of eating beans, since they're a low-glycemic index carbohydrate and all that, but what about the terrible gas? I'm driving my family nuts since I started eating black bean dip with vegetables, hummus with garbanzo beans and putting beans on my salad." From Listener Kelsey: "I just got the BenGreenfieldFitness CD Set and I've been listening to all the episodes in my car on the way to work. I just finished the episode with Dr. Gittleman, where she talks about the Gut Flush Plan and her Colon Cleansing Kit. I feel like this might actually be the answer to all my bloating and fatigue. But how long does a colon cleanse actually take? If I've been eating crap for 10 years, will I have to take it for the next decade?" Do you have a question? Remember, you can now ask your questions via *audio* to me via the free Skype software by simply "Skyping" me at username "pacificfit". You can also call toll free to 1-877-209-9439 and leave a voicemail for Ben Greenfield.
