IMDB: Journalist David Farrier (Tickled) is drawn into a game of cat and mouse with a mysterious individual. A conversation with someone I find endlessly fascinating to talk to — one of my favourite authors, Jason Pargin. He's perhaps most well known for writing John Dies At The End, or a host of other books that all have amazing titles including This Book Is Full of Spiders: Seriously, Dude, Don't Touch It, What the Hell Did I Just Read, and If This Book Exists, You're in the Wrong Universe. His latest comes out this week, and is called — in true Jason style — I Am Starting to Worry About This Black Box of Doom. I was reading his stuff way before I knew I was reading his stuff, later finding out he was the guy who started Pointless Waste of Time which ended up being Cracked.com. If you don't know his writing, you might know him as “the geriatric TikTok personality” (his words, not mine) who stumbled upon Tickled recently, before moving onto Mister Organ. After watching that reaction video, I got in touch with him and fawned a little, before discovering that we have a lot of interests in common — from the chaos of social media and AI, to cults and religion, to all the stuff Tickled and Mister Organ touched on. I loved talking to Jason — and so here's our conversation. It goes all over the place, and I hope you enjoy what he has to say. There is a surprising amount of genre film news this week. Godzilla Minus One has done well among critics and audiences. This has led to a re-release that sounds pretty cool. For the time being, it is only in Japan, but we are sure it will come to America. We also talk two upcoming sequels. One has us excited; the other? Not so much.We have been planning on talking about Mister Organ for weeks now. The documentary sounds innocent enough. An investigative reporter finds out about a strange parking scam and decides to follow up. It ends up being a mistake that changes his life for the worse. The titular character is one of the most terrifying people ever captured on film. He is manipulative, calculating, and always seems to be one step ahead of everyone. We talk about how unremarkable he seems to be (this adds to how frightening he is) and how Mister Organ uses interviews and lots of conversations to showcase how terrifying he is. This includes an epic rant from Blake. We close out our holiday horror shows with the world's only zombie apocalypse musical. When Anna and the Apocalypse was released six years ago, it seemed destined to be a Yuletide regular. So why did it fail to even reach cult status? The simple answer is that it is not that good. The idea is creative and the setting is perfect for what the creators had in mind. Unfortunately, the mix of comedy and high drama never effectively come together. The songs are decent, but derail the more serious aspects. The more horrific scenes take away all the fun. Anna and the Apocalypse is a mess. Director and journalist David Farrier pops by to discuss hostile interview witnesses, inventing mythologies, the research process, and having to go with the flow of a (truly unhinged) story for his new documentary, Mister Organ. More about David Farrier: David has always been drawn to the stranger side of life. After failing miserably to get into medical school, he abruptly changed trajectory and graduated with a journalism degree in 2005. He went on to spend a decade working in a TV newsroom, reporting and presenting across a range of programmes and co-hosting a late night news show. More about Mister Organ: Intrepid journalist and filmmaker David Farrier, whose previous film Tickled became a global sensation for exposing the dark underbelly of competitive endurance tickling, faces off against his greatest foe yet in MISTER ORGAN, an enthralling and bizarre tale that finds Farrier in a dangerous game of cat and mouse with a mysterious con man who is wreaking havoc on his neighborhood. Mister Organ is out in theaters now. Find us at www.werewatchingwhat.com or instagram.com/werewatchingwhat David Farrier can be found at instagram.com/davidfarrier, twitter.com/davidfarrier and webworm.co THEDHK can be found at instagram.com/thedhk , twitter.com/thedhk, and facebook.com/thedhkmovies
Fair Play is great in concept, but only fair in execution. Totally Killer is here for spooky season but fails to scare. Mister Organ is a psychotic trip into the mind of one individual. Loki season 2 sees the return of mutliverses and gods of mischief. Note: At the time of recording SAG-AFTRA's guidance has not asked film critics and entertainment journalists to cease coverage. David Farrier @davidfarrier opens his new movie Mister Organ on Friday at Roxy Cinema Tribeca co-hosted by @Reunion. I was at David's Sundance premiere of Tickled, which was the first of multiple screenings where audience members who were subjects in the film caused very fun chaos. The movie and the whole experience was awesome. This movie puts his lens on regular sociopathy. He explores what a person can be like who would cause another to want to commit suicide. Spoiler alert, there's no holocaust in this. No Ted Bundy. The subject's a manipulative scammer, he broke laws, but nothing so spectacular. That's what makes this movie worth making and watching. It's unlike anything else you'll see out there. The Make Believe Seattle Film Festival coverage trucks along with David Farrier's documentary "Mister Organ"! Farrier, a New Zealand-based documentarian and journalist (known for 2016's TICKLED), focuses this story on Michael Organ, an enigmatic con man known for forging documents, stealing yachts and serving $760 tickets to folks who park at Bashford Antiques' lot after close. Regarding that last point, he's not a traffic cop or anything. The owner actually hired him to just enforce these exorbitant rules. Add in multiple reports of threatening and violent behavior and Farrier now feels the need to get to the bottom of what makes this douchebag tick. After Farrier becomes the target of Organ's most recent lawsuit, he falls into the whirlpool of Organ's bullshit. To make matters worse, Organ realizes Farrier is making a documentary about him and decides to involve himself in the story. We're not talking "involved" by way of a simple sit-down interview; Organ ENTRENCHES himself in Farrier's life to creepy and mentally draining effect. The documentary's definitely a wild piece of pulp, but I'd be lying if I said it was an unflappable piece of journalism. It kinda reminds me of a Netflix true-crime-of-the-week piece. But hey, those things are fun enough! Farrier joins Duncan Greive on The Fold to discuss the film, his hit newsletter Webworm and all the fascinating and formally inventive moves he's made over his career. Hosted on Acast. "Mr Organ is a black hole and I've fallen in," quips journalist and filmmaker David Farrier midway through his latest feature documentary, as he plays a bizarre cat and mouse game with the titular and litigious Michael Organ.
Kiwi investigative journalist David Farrier is often drawn to the weird stranger than fiction stories. His new documentary is certainly no exception – it follows the story of a very unique man, Michael Organ. Michael first came to David's attention through the Bashford Antiques clamping saga. The investigation quickly turns into a game of cat and mouse between Organ and Farrier. The documentary, Mister Organ, is out in cinemas November 10th, and David Farrier joined us to discuss.
