This episode is bustin' a move, listener! Josh Sharp is an iconic actor, writer, and comedian behind A24's hit movie “Dicks: The Musical,” but today he's in the apartment for a no-pants dance! In addition, hilarious stand-up comedian Lizzy Cassidy joins us as temporary co-host while Maddie is out of town! We discuss the phenomenon of line dancing in the sapphic world, why it has become so popular, the joys it brings, and the rejection of explicitly masculine spaces. We also spend an inordinate amount of time discussing horse sex. Ashley gets fake boobs. Lizzy gets a micropenis. Clare and Ellen discuss Dicks: The Musical with friend, repeat guest, and supporter of the show Tim! The experience of Dicks is best described by star Nathan Lane: "It is a deeply silly, satirical, absurdist, R-rated, queer musical based on The Parent Trap...It's not for everybody. It's for the gay and the open-minded. It's for the demented and depraved." Rick and Jeff Kuperman talk about their roles as choreographers for the Broadway production of "The Outsiders," diving deep into various aspects of the show's creation, from choreography and staging to its technical elements like sound and lighting. The two share how their collaboration with Danya Taymor began, their non-traditional theatre practices, and the story behind “The Outsiders” choreography, particularly the rumble scene. Apart from theatre and directing, Rick and Jeff share their other interests, such as Jeff's appreciation for Russian literature and Rick's fascination with philosophical introspection. The two discuss his new movie "Dicks: The Musical" which Larry directed; staring Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally, Josh Sharp, & Aaron Jackson. Btw, it's odd and Hysterical (you'll see a reaction of Rick's parents watching the movie during this episode)! Larry is a legend in comedy. His zen energy allows listening to him both calming and very interesting. A true New York, weed smoking, Jew. Even if you don't know Larry Charles' name, his work is inescapable. He spent years as a writer on ‘Seinfeld' before starting his career as a director on shows like ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm' and movies like Sacha Baron Cohen's ‘Borat' and ‘Brüno.' Now, after swearing off Hollywood, he's back with what might be his most “transgressive” movie yet, ‘Dicks: The Musical,' a truly deranged comedy about two “straight” twins who were separated at birth and ultimately fall in love. In this episode, Charles reveals why this was the project that got him to narrative filmmaking and shares stories from the sets of ‘Seinfeld,' ‘Curb,' ‘Borat' and more. Plus, the director opens up more than ever before about the major falling out he had with longtime collaborator Larry David after HBO pulled their documentary project at the very last minute. It was a legendary morning with comedy legends Larry Charles who was officially allowed to talk about his new film “Dicks: The Musical” and Mark Proksch who was forced to endure abuse from Tim, Larry and at times Vic. Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson have been guests on Couples Therapy since we were a a live show in the back room of an East Village bar, and over the last ten years, every time we'd see them, we'd ask about their UCB musical that they were turning into a movie. Fucking Identical Twins was one of our favorite shows at UCB, and it was nuts, and we were really curious to see if it would ever get made. Well, folks, not only did it get made, but Dicks: The Musical is INCREDIBLE! Just a genuinely strange and hilarious film from moment one, we can't recommend it enough. Grab your N95s and air purifiers and anti-viral sprays and go see an 11am matinee STAT! And on this episode, Josh and Aaron reminisce with us about UCB and the time Padma Lakshmi took level one, the emotional issues of making a movie over a decade, working with a comedy partner and all the ego stuff around being the least famous people in your own movie. Oh, and of course, Barbara Streisand's 2016 album Movie Partners Sing Broadway! PLUS, obvi, we answer YOUR advice questions! Which celebrities are "aging wet" and which ones are "aging dry"? Is 2023 the year of the lisp? Which Disney character is the most hung? And finally: Is Jesus our anchor? The frantic, absurdist new movie Dicks: The Musical is about a pair of misogynistic narcissists (played by Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson) who discover they're long-lost twins. Also starring Megan Mullally, Nathan Lane, and Megan Thee Stallion, the movie's got cheeky song and dance numbers — plus crude humor and a distinctly queer sensibility.
This week, Busy and Caissie, like so many of you, are feeling a deep sadness over the attacks on Israel and the subsequent conflict in the Middle East, trying to remain informed while also being pretty horrified by some of the online discourse. Busy discusses the scientific phenomena of Quantum Entanglement and how she believes it applies to this moment in time. Then, everyone's spirits are lifted when Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp, the writers and stars of the hilarious new movie, “Dicks: The Musical” stop by to explain how they got to make this movie when they weren't really expecting to. Finally, Busy talks about a session she recently had with famed astrologer, Chani Nicholas, and Caissie shares what happened during her latest energy healing experience. The Devil made us do it, and by "it," we mean reviewing the latest movies here at Breakfast All Day. We were not scared in the slightest by David Gordon Green's "The Exorcist: Believer," a direct sequel to the 1973 horror classic and the first of three films he has planned in the franchise. But we're extremely split on the wildly raunchy "Dicks: The Musical." One of us liked the A24 comedy and the other didn't -- can you guess who is who? And it's a big day over at our Patreon, between the "Ahsoka" finale and the "Loki" season 2 premiere, plus the latest episode of "The Morning Show," which was jam-packed. Thanks so much for joining us! Athletic Brewing Co. has an autumnal, alcohol-free beer that's just right for the season. Dark & Gourdy offers a warm blend of pumpkin and spice. "Dicks: The Musical" had its world premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, where it opened the Midnight Madness section with an audacious, raunchy, over-the-top presentation marking A24's first movie musical to date. With an all-star cast that includes Megan Mullally, Megan Thee Stallion, Bowen Yang, and Nathan Lane and directed by "Borat" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm" director Larry Charles, writers and stars Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp scored big and knocked it out of the park. The two young performers and creators were kind enough to spend a few minutes chatting with us about their wild film, which you can listen to or watch down below. Please be sure to check out the film, which will open in theaters from A24 on October 6th. Thank you, and enjoy!
