Are you interested in the successful implementation of urban resilience strategies? Summary of the article titled Integrative approaches to urban resilience: Evaluating the efficacy of resilience strategies in mitigating climate change vulnerabilities from 2024 by Yang Lv and Md Nazirul Islam Sarker, published in the Heliyon journal. This is a great preparation to our next interview with Joe Glesta in episode 244 talking about urban climate resilience. Since we are investigating the future of cities, I thought it would be interesting to see the efficacy of resilience strategies in mitigating vulnerability and enhancing urban resilience. This article presents the significance of stakeholder involvement, community participation, and adaptive management as essential components for effectively implementing resilience measures. As the most important things, I would like to highlight 3 aspects: Effective urban resilience requires a combination of infrastructure, social engagement, and institutional support. Community involvement strengthens the implementation and maintenance of resilience strategies. Regular assessment and adaptation of strategies are necessary to address evolving challenges and improve urban resilience. You can find the article through this link. With both population and economy growing, Africa shall pursue a leapfrogging strategy in achieving the net zero energy system in the next three decades. However, some significant factors need to be addressed, like upscaled investment, accelerated deployment of low carbon energy technology, and international financial support.  In this episode, Jean-Benoit Fournier, a Canadian expert on climate financing and strategy, shares his observations and thoughts based on his first-hand experience on climate mitigation projects in African countries. He suggests that micro-financing in renewable energy projects need to scale up and be implemented in a smart way with focuses on community empowerment and sustainability criteria. Regarding the new financing scheme on phasing out coal faster between South Africa and G7 plus E.U., Fournier considers it a good model, but how effective the cooperation is carried out needs to be seen.  The African Union just became a permanent member of G20 at the G20 Summit in India. This big move may not only bring up African voice in global geopolitics but also trigger African climate ambitions as well as climate-friendly investments from outside. Now, African leapfrogging in climate mitigation is probably more achievable than before. Support the show

The founding partner of a Southeast Asian VC fund explains his company's global ambitions to create economic opportunity, promote sustainability, and reduce carbon emissions. Human activity began altering the climate in the mid-19th century, when the industrial revolution began unleashing unprecedented amounts of carbon into the atmosphere. But an innovative new VC climate tech venture builder is trying to mitigate some of the ensuing catastrophic climate change with a laudable and lofty goal: reducing 10 percent of global carbon emissions by 2035. Wavemaker Impact plans to reach this goal by funding what it calls 100x100 companies, sustainability start-ups able to mitigate 100 megatons of emissions in 10 years while generating $100 million in revenue. Wavemaker Impact founding partner Steve Melhuish sat down with McKinsey's Tomas Laboutka to discuss the genesis of the venture, why it chose Southeast Asia as the first of 15 global hubs, and why business model innovation is sometimes more important than technological innovation.See www.mckinsey.com/privacy-policy for privacy information

The IPCC Report came out a few days ago about mitigating the effects of climate change. The IPCC third report looks at over the 2010 - 2020 period and makes projections of what needs to be done to prevent global warming and to limit the climate to 1.5 degrees of warming. In the last decade the world has managed to curb some critical items. CO2 emissions rose 54% from the millennium. Last 10 years only a 24% increase. So have managed to reduce the real amount of emissions by a third Between 2000 -2010 worldwide it was proposed that the number of coal plants to be built was 855. In the decade 2010-2020 of the 855 coal power stations to be built, only 189 were actually built and the rest cancelled. The reason for this is that Coal is now much more expensive to burn because of increased Mining and shipping costs. The price of renewables too has dropped. It is now cheaper to build a wind farm than a power station with the same power output. But in addition to this a coal power station will have the cost of the coal to power it to be supplied and the cost of running a wind turbine is just maintenance. The wind farm only produces power on windy days whereas the coal power station can produce power all the time. But installing more wind farms in different locations means that wind is more or less guaranteed. This sign could hopefully mean the demise of the coal power station within a few years.

In this talk, Dr. Mads Almassalkhi presents an overview of how power engineering and energy systems modeling and optimization can play key roles to support large-scale integration of renewable generation to enable a clean energy future and mitigate climate change. According to the United Nations, numerous scientific reports, and the majority of Americans, climate change is a global challenge that should be prioritized. One major path forward to mitigate climate change is to install lots of new renewable generation: wind turbines and solar PV arrays. However, as seen in Hawaii, California, and Vermont, having lots of renewables and can impact reliability of the electric grid. In fact, the grid must become more flexible and efficient to absorb the windy and sunny days and more responsive to unexpected events. Mads Almassalkhi is an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Biomedical Engineering (EBE) at the University of Vermont, director of Vermont's new center for sustainable, resilient, and autonomous systems (VECTORS), and co-founder of tech startup Packetized Energy. His research interests lie at the intersection of power systems, mathematical optimization, and controls and focus on improving responsiveness, efficiency, and resilience of power and energy systems. I'm Mark Griffiths in Beijing. Here is the news. China's environment ministry has described the new environmental protection laws as powerful tools against pollution, but warned of challenges in implementing the laws. Vice minister Pan Yue says a good law only gets you halfway there; and it needs to be implemented. Calling the new law "the most powerful legislation in the environmental category", Pan says it can still fail without ironclad enforcement. Pan's remarks came days after China approved sweeping revisions to the law with tough penalties for polluters. After two years of discussion, the revision expands the law to 70 articles from 47, enshrining environmental protection as the government's overriding priority, with specific articles and provisions on smog. This is NEWS Plus Special English. Global carbon emissions from agriculture can be reduced by 50 to 90 percent by 2030 using strategies including eating less beef, reducing food waste and managing soil nutrients better. A study in the United States has found that if all the recommended strategies were implemented, up to 5 giga-tons of emissions could be eliminated from the agricultural sector. That's an equivalent of removing all the cars in the world. The Strategies for Mitigating Climate Change in Agriculture looked at both food consumption and production. The study found that agriculture is responsible for roughly a fifth of greenhouse gas emissions, and that about 70 percent of direct greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture come from livestock, in particular from cows, sheep and other grazing animals. Considering beef's immense share of livestock carbon emissions which is six times greater than poultry on a per unit basis, many of these emissions could be eliminated if beef demand were reduced. Researchers say convincing the Americans and Chinese to eat less beef is of particular importance. The U.S. is already beginning to consume less beef but still remains the world's biggest consumer of red meat. Per capita beef consumption in the country dropped from a peak of 40 kilograms in 1976 to just less than 27 kilograms in 2009. It's still excessive by global standards. You're listening to NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Mark Griffiths in Beijing. A campaign has been held in Beijing to boost public awareness of cancer prevention and control, addressing a growing health crisis China cannot afford to ignore. The Cancer Prevention campaign was launched by the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association in 1995, and it falls on April 15 to 21 each year. This year's campaign has urged people to improve disease prevention through a slew of activities, including online interviews, lectures and free health checks. Cancer has been the top killer in Beijing for seven consecutive years. Although Chinese people's livelihood has improved, the incidence of cancer and mortality have also been on the rise. 50 years ago, cancer ranked the fourth-biggest cause of death, while in 2007, it had become the top killer in China. Doctors say unhealthy lifestyles are partly to blame for the rising incidence of cancer. The number of children treated for severe malnutrition in an in-patient center in the Central African Republic has tripled compared to last year. That's according to UNICEF, the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund. In Bangui Pediatric Hospital, the largest in-patient nutrition treatment center in the country, the first three months of this year saw almost 700 children treated for severe acute malnutrition with medical complications. That was a sharp contrast with the figure of 200 over the same period last year. UNICEF warned the number of malnourished children will continue to rise because the majority of families in the African country have been unable to plant their own crops or work to earn a living. Other problems include lack of access to safe water, sanitation and health care. It's estimated that 28,000 children in the country will suffer from severe acute malnutrition this year; and their lives and health are threatened. Malnutrition is even more deadly in the rainy season, when diarrhea and malaria are at their peak; both put the lives of already malnourished children at risk.
