Many people don't understand the true devastation caused by single use plastic until they see it. Lindsey McCoy, CEO of Plaine Products, witnessed this environmental challenge firsthand while working to clean up beaches in the Bahamas. After that, she took what she knew from the world of Non-Profit work and started Plaine Products with her sister. Lindsey thought about the original product design for Netflix. Remember when you would get a DVD in the mail and return it when you were done? Well, she thought "why can't we do something like that with beauty products?" Last year alone, they eliminated 110,000 single use plastic bottles. The idea for Plaine Products hasn't come without it's challenges. We're discussing manufacturing roadblocks but we're also touching on best practices for the use of eco-friendly shampoo and conditioners. A lot of people complain that toxin-free haircare doesn't do the trick - listen to the episode and you'll walk away with best practices to achieve that squeaky clean feeling. We're ending the conversation with a discussion about what it actually takes to grow and market products that aren't on the shelves at Target. As Lindsey says, "it's the kindness of strangers," that allows these movements to grow. How does a small startup launch a mail-back recycling program to deliver circular products that massive brands struggle to make? Meet innovator Lindsey McCoy, who started Plaine Products with her sister, Alison, in 2017. Today, Plaine Products offers 16 fully circular personal care products, including shampoo, conditioner, moisturizer, and lotion. These personal care products are made with vegan ingredients and come in aluminum bottles that customers rinse and return for refilling when empty. When a customer runs low, they order a new bottle that arrives before they run out along with a return mail label; after swapping the pump to the new container, the empty is placed in the shipping box to send the battle back to Plaine Products for cleaning, refilling, and use by another customer.Imagine the circular economy, a world in which everything we buy and use is collected, recycled, composted, or passed on for continued use to lower our environmental impact. The vision sounds a long way off, and it may be a long time until everything can be recycled or composted economically. Among companies, Walmart, Kroger, and Burger King are pioneering circularity through Loop, a consortium of consumer packaged goods brands spearheaded by specialty recycler Terracycle. Loop has not disclosed how much packaging it has prevented from reaching the landfill. To date, Plaine Products has prevented more than 547,000 plastic bottles from being used once and tossed or escaping into nature as pollution. Lindsey also discusses how more than 270 retail stores now offer Plaine Products refill stations.Plaine Products has created a special 20% discount for Earth911 readers -- visit the site and enter the discount code "Earth911" when checking out. It can be hard to find good products that also have great packaging. Several years ago, I started using a great set of products with amazing packaging that gets specially delivered. I'm Marla, the Green Home Coach, and I have Lindsey McCoy from Plaine Products joining me today! Plaine Products is a company with a unique delivery system for sustainably packaged vegan bath and body products! Plaine Products Lindsey and her sister started Plaine Products in 2017. About Lindsey Growing up, Lindsey wanted to save the planet. Back then, business was not the way to do it, so she joined the non-profit world and spent the next twenty years working at various non-profits. Environmental education Her last non-profit position was doing environmental education in the Bahamas. She was not an environmental expert at that point. She only knew what recycling was, and she had heard the term zero-waste before. Plastic Lindsey spent time with many scientists and environmental experts on the island. While showing them around, she kept on seeing plastic piling up everywhere. She did not want to add to it. So she started using reusable bags and water bottles and tried to buy less. Starting a company In May 2015, when she and her husband moved back to the US, Lindsey asked her sister to help her start a company to help people accumulate fewer plastic bottles. They launched their business in February of 2017. A subscription system Lindsey and her sister created a subscription system where they send out bottles of bath and body products with pumps. When their customers run low, they send out refill bottles. They pay for the return of the empty bottles, which they then wash and reuse. Finding the right manufacturer Lindsey's sister is picky, so she made Lindsey go through several manufacturers before they found one they both liked. Ingredients They had to learn a lot about ingredients! They settled on using only clean vegan beauty ingredients in all their products. Before that, Lindsey had no idea how bad most of the bath and body products she used were or what was in them. Connection Many people tend to miss the connection between their health and the health of our world. Poor communities The plastic problem is worse than we realize. Most plastic gets recycled in places with poor communities. The people living there have to breathe toxic air and plastic fumes. We have a choice Many people know that plastic can be bad for their health. Yet they continue to use it because it is so convenient. Fortunately, we have a choice. Even though millions of dollars have been spent convincing us that we should value convenience above all else, we can still decide how we want to live. Reducing waste There are many solutions out there for reducing the amount of waste that gets produced. Word of mouth Hearing from someone you trust has been proven to be the best recommendation for trying new products. Hopefully, people will also learn from others how to make more mindful decisions. Why is there so much plastic? Plastic is a by-product of fossil fuels and is very cheap to produce. In the US, fossil fuels are subsidized. That makes plastic even less costly to produce. Plastic has many good qualities. It is indestructible, durable, and can get molded into any shape. Still, it does not make sense to use something that lasts for hundreds of years for five minutes and then throw it away. Cancer Plastic is one of the first things most people with cancer eliminate from their lives because there are too many health questions surrounding it that are just not worth asking. Recycling plastic Plastics can get recycled, but the process is complicated. One of the biggest problems is that most cities do not have the facilities to recycle more complex types of plastic. Metal Metals are infinitely recyclable. That means that the aluminum bottles used by Plaine Products never need to be thrown away. The Plaine Products system Plaine Products has a circular approach. They try to create as little waste as possible in every aspect. After making something, they send it out to be used. Then the packaging gets returned to be washed, refilled, and reused. Even their cardboard boxes were designed to be reused many times over. No perfect solution There is no perfect solution to the plastic problem. Lindsey gets frustrated with organizational nit-picking and finds the term zero waste a little intimidating. She prefers to simply do the best she can with whatever comes up each day. Their products Plaine Products strives to make fewer products that can do lots of different things. All their products are chemical-free, so they are safe for everyone to use, including children. The products are all aloe-based and super-thick. You only need to use very little, so they last for ages! New products At Plaine Products, they do their best to respond to whatever people ask for without creating any extra items to be thrown away. Lately, they have been embracing more hair products. Their newest products are a deep hair conditioner and a styling gel, and they will soon be adding a scented handwash. Environmentally friendly products Environmentally friendly products have come a long way! There are some excellent products available today. Lindsey McCoy of Plaine Products shares her passion for sustainability and the story of building a bathroom products business that replaces single-use plastic bottles by utilizing refillable and re-usable non-plastic bottles.
With eCommerce sales rapidly on the rise, packaging waste has reached shocking amounts. The US alone produces nearly eighty million tons of packaging waste each year. To put that in perspective, the cardboard waste alone results in the loss of one billion trees annually. Just the ice packs Blue Apron sends end up adding the equivalent weight of two million adult men a year to landfills. By 2050, there will be more plastic waste than fish in the ocean. Not only is it ethically irresponsible for brands to ignore the environmental impact of their practices, both packaging and otherwise, it's bad for business. 61% of consumers will switch to an eco-friendly brand if they find out their current favorite brand is not using eco-friendly practices. 59% of consumers are even willing to pay more for eco-friendly packaging. Of course, it's one thing to decide to use eco-friendly shipping practices. It's entirely another thing to implement them. So let's look at some tips and tricks that you can borrow from pioneering brands to get started, some of which can even save you money! 1. Use recycled cardboard boxes. Using recycled cardboard boxes, rather than virgin cardboard boxes, is a very popular green move amongst retailers today. It's also highly effective. Recycling just one ton of cardboard saves 17 trees and 7000 gallons of water. Recycled cardboard doesn't need to be more expensive either. The Bircher Bar was able to save $0.10/box by switching to recycled boxes. Many, many packaging material companies now produce recycled cardboard boxes, making this switch low hanging fruit. 2. Reuse boxes. Simply using recycled cardboard boxes doesn't have to be the only way you recycle boxes. Reusing boxes is also a good idea. Plaine Products, a personal care company, uses reusable aluminum shampoo bottles that customers send back to be refilled. In order to maximize the environmental impact, Plaine also reuses their boxes (already made out of recycled cardboard) up to five times before recycling the box. Plaine estimates their reuse system has saved 15,000 boxes in the past eighteen months. Jennifer Bucholz from Plaine says, “We have found that the easier we make the process, the more customers we have adapting to eco-friendly, no-waste products, which is good for our business and good for the Earth.” Then there's Returnity, a company that is taking reusing boxes to the next level. They create reusable mailers that are guaranteed to make at least forty trips. At the end of its lifespan, the packaging is recyclable. Returnity is on track to save more than ten million cardboard boxes and poly mailer bags in 2020. For companies with circular shipping models, like Rent the Runway, these mailers pay for themselves within 15 trips. Returnity does recognize that their mailers face a challenge in cost-effectiveness for standard one-way shipping companies, as they require customers to return the mailers. Returnity is currently working with shipping companies to design cost-effective closed-loop logistics systems to spread the use of their mailers to all types of companies. 3. Minimize packaging. Minimizing packaging (both of your products and your shipping containers) is a simple change that can make not only a huge impact on the environment but also on your bottom line. Nick Schiffelbein from LOCATE Inventory points out that using a fulfillment software tool that can automatically choose the optimal size box for a shipment not only saves packing materials, but it can also result in a massive amount of freed up labor. He points out that even just a single second saved in the box choosing process results in one freed up hour for every 2,000 packages. 4. Use cornstarch-based packing peanuts. Styrofoam packing peanuts are made from petroleum and result in the release of 57 chemical byproducts during creation. Companies have been offering more environmentally friendly alternatives to the traditional styrofoam packing peanut since the mid-1990s, perhaps th...

Today, we had a delightful conversation with Lindsey McCoy, the co-founder and CEO of Plaine Products. Lindsey started the company with her sister, and they're on a mission to reduce the use of plastics. Lindsey thought about doing this after witnessing how plastics never really never really disappear once they're made, despite her teenage promise to never get into business. Being inspired with the pile of shampoo bottles in their bathroom, as well as the humble beginnings of the now media giant Netflix, Lindsey began to think of the possibility of refilling bottles used as packaging instead of throwing them away. They spent lots of research about the best reusable bottles to use, the best way to clean them, and the best ingredients to use for their product. As they delve in more deeply to the problem, Lindsey found out that most mainstream personal care products use a lot of chemical. After a year and a half of preparation, they launched Plaine Products, a company that use vegan and cruelty-free ingredients for shampoo, conditioner and body wash. But what's new? Their smart packaging. The initial order comes with a pump, which consumers can refill once they ran low. A refill bottle gets sent to the customer, while the original bottle gets sent back to the company and gets reused by other customers. Since then, the company's growth has been organic. Lindsey also talked about how some people thought her idea was ridiculous, but she never really got a good explanation why except that it's never been done before. Thanks to Lindsey's tenacity, the good people around her (including her sister, her co-founder), and a great idea, Plaine Products came to existence. It's been feedback and continuous learning that make Plaine Products the awesome company it is now. What does Lindsey want to tell others who want to start but just don't know how? The secret is to start now as nothing can ever be perfect. Also, be patient with yourself—everything is a learning process, so always be willing to learn and take feedback seriously. And if you have an idea, stick with it! Well, unless it's illegal. Today's Guest Lindsey McCoy is co-founder and CEO of Plaine Products, which offers premium personal care products in aluminum bottles that can be returned, refilled and reused. She was inspired to start Plaine Products after spending 10 years working on environmental education in the Bahamas, islands full of single-use plastic. All of the products are vegan, non-GMO, cruelty-free, biodegradable, color-safe and free of parabens, sulfates and toxins, good for the body and the planet. Based in the USA, Plaine Products is B Corp and a member of 1% for the Planet. Lindsey has a master's degree from the School of Public and Environmental Affairs from Indiana University. She is currently on the Board of Plastic Ocean Project and a volunteer for Citizen's Climate Lobby. Small Act of Green Rebellion: Eat imperfect products. More than 40% of food grown is not eaten and all that food turns into CO2 in landfills. If food waste was a country it would be the third worst contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, only trailing behind the US and China. Imperfect Foods is looking to remove the not-so-perfect produce and foods from the waste stream and bring them to consumers at a fraction of the price. Madeline Rotman, Head of Sustainability at Imperfect Foods, talks to us about how the company has pivoted during COVID and tells us what her favorite product is to order every month (it's my new fav as well). Kathrin Dellantonio is the Head of Corporate Partnerships at MyClimate, a non-profit company with programs to reduce the carbon footprint of businesses and individuals though carbon offset programs and projects that help to remove carbon from the atmosphere, like planting mangroves. To date, more than 80 billion tons of CO2 has been removed from the atmosphere through myclimate's programs. We're happy to be partnering with an amazing organization and helping to support their work to reduce CO2 emissions across the globe. Consider offsetting your carbon footprint this year by using a simple carbon calculator. SPOILER ALERT! We'll be releasing a bonus episode next week with the Head of Sustainability at Imperfect Foods next week! Small Act of Green Rebellion: Buy carbon neutral or local products. Danielle Doggett took her love of sailing and nature to build a company that will sail products from Costa Rica up the Pacific in a carbon neutral vessel. The shipping cargo industry pollutes more than the 6th most polluted country in the world and 10,000 containers are lost at sea every year (check out this article about the rubber ducks lost at sea). This means a hefty impact on our planet for up to 90% of the goods that we own. SAILCARGO is hoping to change that and help reduce our impact on the planet with carbon neutral shipping. -- Season 3 of Trash Talking with Eco-Warriors is sponsored by Plaine Products. Green Gab Podcast – Green Homes, Green Living and Green Companies
We are very happy to have Lindsey McCoy, of Plaine Products, with us today. Lindsey's story is not like that of most entrepreneurs. Her background is in non-profit management. Plastic everywhere Lindsey met and married her husband in the Bahamas, and when she moved there, she did environmental education work. She kept bumping into single-use plastics everywhere in the Bahamas because they don't have the same sort of infrastructure there as there is in the United States, which makes the trash 'disappear', so you see a lot of litter lying around all over, and also in the water. Lindsey started doing things to minimize plastic in her life. The one place she couldn't find a solution for was the shower. And all the little plastic bottles that go in there were making her crazy. Moving back to the States and launching Plaine Products Lindsey and her husband moved back to the United States. Lindsey then contacted her sister and asked her to help her do something about the hundreds of millions of plastic shampoo bottles that were going into landfills every year. Her sister agreed although neither of them had any idea of what they would be getting into. Two years later, they launched Plaine Products. Lindsey's motivation Lindsey got her idea because she realized that at some point, every piece of plastic we have ever used is still on this planet. And she wanted to do something about it. She also became an advocate for Green Beauty. It just takes a little more time It takes just a little more time to not automatically buy the products you've always bought. These are habits that we can all change relatively easily. Some alternatives for the shower Glass bottles are a little tricky in the shower, as they could break, and they are not kid-friendly. There are solid bars of soap and shampoo available but these don't necessarily work well for everybody. If nothing else is available, it's advisable to buy the biggest plastic bottles of shampoo that you can find because that will result in less plastic to get rid of in the end. And if you're in a city, there are often places where you can get your bottles refilled. About Plaine Products Plaine Products are toxin-free. They consist of natural ingredients and they are free of any chemicals that you can't pronounce. They are free of parabens, sulfates, and palm oil, and they're cruelty-free and vegan certified. Think Dirty has rated the Plaine Products with a zero, which means they are completely safe to use. Aloe is the main ingredient used in Plaine Products. Plaine Products work very well! The Plaine Products process The process is very simple: Go to www.plaineproducts.com and choose the products that you want. Your products then get placed in a box made of recycled paper and sent to you. The first products that you buy will come with pumps. When you re-order a product, you will receive a refill bottle without a pump. Along with your refill bottles, you will also get a return label to put on the box with your empty bottles. You can then return these to Plaine Products for free, where they will be washed, refilled, and sent back out into the world. The point of this process is that it is very simple, easy, and convenient for you. Lindsey has seen the plastic problem up close Lindsey had the opportunity to go on an all-women expedition, called eXXpedition, to research the amount of plastic in the oceans. The incredibly cool, around the world sailing voyage consists of thirty legs. It takes two years in total to complete, and ten women get the opportunity to sail each leg, along with the professional sailing crew and the mission leader. Lindsey got to do the leg from Aruba to Panama, in December 2019. The voyage involved doing research, counting pieces of litter, visiting the dump at Aruba to see what the infrastructure is like, skimming the surface of the ocean with a tool designed to pick up plastic from the water, and capturing water from a depth of 75 feet to check the amount of unseen micro-plastic particles in the water. Lindsay liked that the leaders of the eXXpedition are talking about solution-based science. So they are trying to figure out what kinds of plastics are out there and how quickly they are breaking down so that we can know what kind of plastic to stop using. Ultimately, the only real way to keep plastic out of the ocean is to use way less of it and to use it responsibly. A double-dose of nastiness Unfortunately, plastic lasts forever so it does not dissolve back into the water. It just breaks into smaller and smaller particles. Toxic chemicals like to attach to these plastics, making them a double-dose of nastiness for the fish who eat them. And this moves all the way up the food chain. Recycling Recycling plastic can usually only be done once, unfortunately. And only nine or ten percent of all plastic is recycled. Aluminum, however, can be recycled infinitely without any loss of quality. Doing the best you can At Plaine Products, they have a "progress, not perfection" mantra because you don't have to be perfect. We can all, however, do our best to be responsible when it comes to making choices. And we can all do whatever we can to minimize our footprint and to keep our planet clean and green. Did you know that our plastic items that we would normally put into the recycling bin are NOT it making to the recycling facility? It is going straight to the landfill! In this episode, I talk about how I have spent an extensive amount of time to find out for myself if this is actually true. I did lots of Google searching and have had conversations with a variety of people who have confirmed that this is indeed, true! The good news: there is a a solution. I have found a company called Plaine Products whose mission is to eliminate plastic waste. Listen to this episode for details. We create so much waste. We don’t recycle enough, and we throw out tons of textile waste every year with no thought of the impact it has on our planet. In 2017, I visited the largest landfill in East Africa, the Dandora dump in Kenya. It was a horrifying and life-changing experience that made me think twice about my habits. We are to be good stewards of the Earth God gave us, so let’s explore little changes in our habits that can collectively make a massive difference. Here are 31 ways you can live more sustainability and reduce your negative impact on the environment by creating less waste: 1. Use reusable straws: You can find glass and metal reusable straws on Amazon. When asked if you want one at a restaurant, you can tell them know, and keep one handy at home, in the car, and in your bag 2. Bring a fork and knife with you to restaurants that use plastic cutlery. You can purchase ones for carrying while you’re traveling or just out to eat. 3. Switch to reusable water bottles, coffee mugs, and/or drink tumblers. You can travel with them and fill them at water fountains. 4. Coffee lovers: Switch to a French Press or pour overs. 5. Tea lovers: Switch to loose-leaf tea instead of using tea bags. For more on reducing waste from coffee and tea use: https://www.treehugger.com/htgg/how-to-go-green-coffee-tea.html 6. Switch to reusable, zero-waste bath products from companies like Plaine Products. They’ll send the you the product and when you’re done, you mail it back to be refilled and used again. Here’s my review of their products. Follow this link Stillbeingmolly.com/plaineproducts and use the code “Molly” for 20% off. Click here for more on my interview with Plaine Products founder, Lindsey Mccoy. 7. Use refillable soaps and household cleaners through brands like Fillaree or Mama Suds. Fillaree is based in Durham, NC, and if you’re local, you can visit one of their refilling stations in the area. Fillaree also sells compostable sponges. Michelle of Mama Suds has also been on the podcast, and sells a concentrated household cleaner that you can refill along with a lot of other refillables: https://www.mamasuds.com/ 8. Put a recycling bin or bag in your bathroom for bath products and walk it to the main recycling bin when it’s full. 9. Reusable grocery bags: It’s easy to forget them, so create a space for them in the trunk of your car and be sure to immediately put them back when you’re finished using them. 10. Reusable produce bags greatly cut down on plastic use! They come in different sizes and are washable. Keep them in your car with the reusable grocery bags so they’re always at the ready. 11. Get your produce from the farmers market, local produce stands, or join a local CSA. This reduces both your carbon and plastic footprint. 12. Buy in bulk: Shop for staple ingredients like nuts, lentils, and spices in bulk. Remember to bring a reusable bag or mason jar when shopping bulk items. You can keep them in your trunk with the produce and grocery bags. 13. Switch to reusable plastic wrap. Beeswax Wrap is works just like plastic wrap, is biodegradable, and is washable and usable up to 100 times. 14. Reusable snack bags and lunch containers reduce plastic waste in daily lunches and work well for travel. 15. Switch to cloth napkins. This is also a great way to use textile waste that can’t be donated or thrifted. 16. Use reusable kitchen towels or rags to cut down on paper towel waste. 17. Switch from tissues to handkerchiefs. 18. Switch out cotton balls or rounds for reusable muslin cloths. They’re great for removing makeup and nail polish. 19. Purchase a makeup removal cloth like the Endure Lash Eye Cloth, which only uses water to remove 99% of your makeup. 20. For the ladies: Use a menstrual cup instead of tampons. 21. Another one for the ladies: Instead of a pad, check out “momma cloth.” In addition to reducing waste, they’re more comfortable, save money, and don’t contain harmful chemicals! 22. Switch to cloth diapers instead of disposable diapers. Check out a recent blog post for what I learned after 5 years of using cloth diapers: https://www.stillbeingmolly.com/2019/03/19/cloth-diapering-basics-101/ 23. Who Gives A Crap? is a toilet paper company with the best name ever. Their products are made out of recyclable materials, and they donate 50% of their profits to help build toilets for those in need. 24. Rechargeable batteries are an easy way to save money and the planet! 25. Consign or trade old clothes: Check out podcast Episode 130 to about hear ways you can sustainably get rid clothing in your closet. 26. Before you throw something out, be sure to ask these questions: Can I repair it? If I can’t repair it, is there another use for it? How can I sustainably can I dispose of it? 27. Buy toys more sustainably. Can you buy them used? Can you buy a version that’s not plastic? Can you buy a wooden version? And while you’re thinking about that, check out Green Toys, made from recyclable plastics. 28. Go paperless. Contact any businesses you receive a bill from and ask to go paperless. This cuts down on jump mail, and saves them money too, so they should be happy to oblige. 29. Unsubscribe from unwanted magazines or catalogues from Catalogue Choice and DMA Choice. 30. Borrow books from the library for the kids AND for yourself! Tip: Keep a book bin by the door as a reminder to return library books and avoid late charges. 31. Compost! It can feel overwhelming, but there are services to help. Compost Now is currently in a few cities in North Carolina, Charleston, SC, and Atlanta, GA. Not only will they guide you through how to compost, they’ll also pick up your bin and exchange it for a new one. You can also request the compost and they’ll deliver it to you. Go to http://stillbeingmolly.com/compostnow for a two-week trial. No need to feel overwhelmed: Pick a few tips to implement and start reducing your impact. You can add more as you go, and you’ll like save money along the way. Have you tried any of these ways to reduce waste? Are you going to? Let me know what you learned or what you want to implement next!

Green Dreamer: Sustainability and Regeneration From Ideas to Life
How can we go from having an ecopreneurial idea, especially something that's not yet been done before, to bringing it to life? What do we need to really tackle the issue of plastic pollution all over the world and move into a more circular economy? Today, Plaine Products' Co-Founder, Lindsey McCoy shares her wisdom with us. HIGHLIGHTS: [5:30] Lindsey: "It is a continual learning journey. Still, we're learning, tweaking, ... I think that's part of being an entrepreneur... constant problem solving, ... when something's not working out the way you thought it was going to, being able to let go and figure out how to adjust." [06:20] Something that didn't work out for Plaine Products that they had to tweak. [06:55] How Lindsey raised awareness for her brand. [13:50] Lindsey: "Something that you're going to use once for a few minutes but will stick around for hundreds of years... just doesn't make sense when there are other options out there." [14:15] Lindsey: "My motto is progress, not perfection... life happens." [17:25] Lindsey: "Instead of asking why organic food is so expensive, maybe we should be asking why non-organic food so cheap." [21:25] Lindsey's greatest learning lessons from her ecopreneurial jourey. Thanks for bringing your light! Lindsey McCoy started Plaine Products with her sister Alison Webster. After living and working in the Bahamas for 10 years, Lindsey just couldn't ignore the impact single-use plastics have on our environment. After reducing single-use plastics in her own life she found herself stuck in the bathroom. So Plaine Products- a refillable bath and body product subscription service was born. Did you know that only about 1 in FIVE plastic bottles are ever recycled? And that it can take between 400 and 1,000 years to decompose. It’s actually estimated that humans are purchasing one million plastic bottles… PER MINUTE. Let that sink in. One million bottles PER MINUTE globally. And with 91% of those bottles never being recycled… that’s a lot of plastic that’s going to just end up in landfills, streams, creeks, and the ocean. I’m not trying to sound like some crazy tree hugger, but that’s a pretty alarming number. So what if each of us, made at least ONE simple, small change in 2018 to reduce the amount of plastic we are using and consuming? What if there was a company that was out there that could help you along the way? My guest this week is Lindsay McCoy, founder of Plaine Products, a clean and zero waste bath and body company! In today's episode you'll meet Shannon's friend, Lindsey McCoy. Lindsey shares how she's learned to make space in her life to find herself. Lindsey married young, but soon realized after college that her marriage wasn't in line with how she wanted to live. After facing one of her toughest decisions yet, she got divorced and soon after that lived on a sailboat for nearly two years. Lindsey has also learned that we don't have to live with as much as we think we do. On her path to living more simply and being more mindful of the environment, it's led her to create a business that reduces the amount of plastic polluting the earth. Lindsey McCoy has a master's degree in nonprofit management and spent the last 10 years working on environmental education in the Bahamas, islands full of single-use plastic. She and her sister co-founded a company, Plaine Products, that offers shampoo, conditioner and body wash in aluminum bottles that can be returned, refilled and reused. Plaine Products provides a return and refill service for shampoo, conditioner and body wash, Lindsey tells more in this podcast.
Plaine Products helps reduce single-use plastics by producing natural, vegan shampoo, conditioner, and body wash in returnable, reusable containers. In 2013, Lindsey McCoy was living in the Bahamas and running a non-profit called Save the Bays. “I had zero interest in going into business,” she told me. “I was going to save the world.” As she explored the islands, she noticed the impact of single use plastics. “Without regular trash pick up, you see those water bottles, flip flops and plastic bags in the water and along the side of the road,” she explains. “To me, single-use plastics is one of those things that once you start to notice it, you realize it’s everywhere.” Lindsey tried to reduce her personal use of plastic. But she found it difficult to find plastic-free alternatives to shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. “It began to occur to me that there was a way to solve this by going outside of the non-profit community Providing a product might be a better solution.” When she returned to the United States in 2015, she and her sister, Alison Webster, went to work on the problem. Together, they formed Plane Products. Plaine Products produces natural, vegan shampoo, conditioner & body wash in returnable, refillable, reusable containers. When a customer empties a Plaine Products bottle, they order a replacement. They place the empty bottle into the box and return it to Plaine Products to be sanitized and refilled. It took Lindsey and Alison almost two years from idea to product launch. They had to find a contract manufacturer who produces natural products. They needed to work with someone who would be willing to refill bottles. And, they had to figure out their non-plastic packaging. At first, they tried steel containers, but the containers rusted. When they switched to aluminum containers, they found that the packaging not only lasted, but it was lighter to ship, saving costs. And, they had to figure out how to explain the concept of reusable packaging. Social Entrepreneurship Quotes from Lindsey McCoy “Once you start to notice it, you realize it’s everywhere.” “I’m lazy.
