With Ukraine and Russia in the throes of attempting to negotiate a ceasefire, Westminster Insider Host Sascha O'Sullivan talks to some of the leading figures on the frontline of the war with Russia. She speaks to Finnish Minister for Nordic Co-Operation Anders Adlercreutz, who told her Finland has never stopped buying tanks and building bomb shelters, for fear of a Russian invasion, and builds resilience at every level through initiatives like media literacy to protect from ‘hybrid threats' such as misinformation. Lithuania Defense Minister Dovilė Šakalienė told Sascha Russia could be ready for a full scale invasion into her country – and NATO territory – in less than a decade. And she said Lithuanian's were prepared for what this means: “prison, torture and deportation”. Former NATO director of Planning and Policy Fabrice Pothier explains the risk of NATO losing it's relevance without the U.S. as a reliable ally, and warns it could undermine any security guarantees put in place in the event of a ceasefire. Ukrainian journalist at the Spectator Svitlana Morenets reflects on what it's like covering a war in her own homeland – and where Ukraine's redlines would be. Back home in the U.K., Sascha speaks to Denzil Davidson, a former Foreign Office and No10 advisor, about Britain's willingness to warm up it's relationship with the E.U. and how the lack of support from U.S. President Donald Trump could open up “a serious opportunity” for British politicians to step up in Europe. And Arminka Helic, another former Foreign Office advisor, tells Sascha that everyone in the country should stock up on enough basic supplies to last them 72 hours without electricity or water. Trump's plan to end the Russia - Ukraine war heated up with Wednesday's call to Putin. With Ukraine and Europe sidelined from negotiations, can this administration bring about a lasting peace that both sides agree to? Also hot are Trump's trade wars, which include a directive to impose reciprocal tariffs on all countries. How practical is this plan, and what will it achieve? Finally, most U.S. foreign aid is frozen, and the agency that distributes much of that aid, USAID, is being dismantled. Peace Matters - A Podcast on Contemporary Geopolitics and International Relations
Poland has become an increasingly important actor within the European Union. After years of democratic backsliding, it`s democracy is consolidating again under Prime Minister Donald Tusk who took office in 2023. In 2025 Poland will face presidential elections and Poland will also be chairing the Council of the European Union. Poland is a stance supporter of Ukraine after it was invaded by Russia in February 2024. It hosts a large number of Ukrainian refugees and is rapidly building up its defense capabilities in order to deter a hostile Russia. What geopolitical role is Poland pursuing in an increasingly multipolar world? How will the election of Donald Trump shape the future of European Security and how does Poland perceive it`s role within the European Union? With Ukraine and Moldova having candidate status for EU accession, what can be expected from Poland in this context? How important is democracy and peace for Poland? Is Poland able to bridge different perceptions of EU countries about the future of the Union? These and other questions are discussed with the political analyst Wojciech Przybylski and the polish academic Maciej Kisilowksi in the 26th episode of the IIP Podcast “Peace Matters” moderated by Stephanie Fenkart. In this week's bonus show, we dig into Israel and evangelicals, two fellow travelers that shaped U.S. politics and the world together. Many evangelicals believe God will protect Israel, as long as they accept the Lord Jesus Christ as their savior, or they'll burn in hell with other nonbelievers when Jesus returns. That means the destruction of Israel, a Jewish state. Digging into Speaker Mike Johnson, a staunch evangelical, and the other MAGA Christian nationalists blocking aid to Ukraine in the House, it turns out Ukraine also plays a role in evangelical “end times” prophecy. The path of the destruction of Israel goes through Ukraine, according to Pat Robertson and other evangelical leaders featured in the show notes. Does Johnson believe this? Johnson proudly proclaimed his worldview is the bible, telling Fox News: "Someone asked me today in the media, they said, 'It's curious, people are curious: What does Mike Johnson think about any issue under the sun?' I said, 'Well, go pick up a Bible off your shelf and read it. That's my worldview.” Johnson was featured in a German documentary about taking his daughter to a purity ball where she signed a pledge to never have sex before marriage. Purity balls are seen as dehumanizing to young girls and women Pat Robertson, one of the most consequential evangelical leaders to build white Christian nationalists into a political force, taking over the GOP, claimed in a video featured in this week's bonus show, the path to Israel's destruction begins with Russia's destruction of Ukraine. Ray Comfort, another evangelical minister with a large social media following, wrote the book Russia Will Attack Israel, and plays up Russia's war in Ukraine as “end times” prophecy. David Jeremiah, the evangelical pastor of a megachurch, also promotes this idea in his work. The argument goes: Putin is a tool of God to raise the forces of evil against Ukraine on Russia's path to waging war against Israel. In their logic, Ukraine must be destroyed so the final battle of good vs. evil can begin, ushering in the return of Jesus. Obviously Christian nationalists like Johnson and others in the MAGA cult blocking aid to Ukraine are motivated by power and money. They align with strongmen like Trump to consolidate their support and enrich themselves. Both Putin and Orban used Christianian nationalism to entrench their regimes. Johnson was caught taking Kremlin-linked donations in 2018, as discussed in the recent bonus show for Patreon subscribers, The Kremlin Owns Mike Johnson. Russia does its part to feed into these “end times” fever dreams. The philosopher Aleksandr Dugin, Russia's Steve Bannon, recently said, "Jerusalem will be a Russian city or it will not exist at all.” As Trump's white Christian nationalist base cheers on Putin's genocide in Ukraine and Netanyahu's genocide in Gaza and the West Bank, Russia oppresses and kills evangelicals in occupied Ukraine, according to a recent PBS Newshour report, and Christians are increasingly harassed and pushed out by ultra-Orthodox Israelis. The persecution of fellow Christians may likely mean nothing to Johnson if he shares the belief that accelerating global conflicts will ultimately bring back Jesus. What he has made clear through his words and actions is that he takes the bible literally, like many evangelicals. With Ukraine increasingly in the crossfire of “end times” prophecies, spun in megachurches and their disinformation echo chambers, we have to come to terms that we're up against a doomsday cult, not a political party. Biden cannot shame or reason with these people. He must work around them to save Ukraine. With Ukraine facing a resurgent Russia, NATO leaders have been clear that they do not and “will never recognize Russia's illegal and illegitimate annexations, including Crimea.” While Western leaders speak clearly when it comes to Ukraine, their uncompromising positions are unfortunately undermined when NATO remains largely silent over the precedent for Russia's invasion of Ukraine: Turkey's invasion and occupation of the northern part of Cyprus in 1974. Michael Rubin, the director of policy analysis at the Middle East Forum and a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, joins Thanos Davelis to explain why NATO's 50 year tolerance of Turkey's occupation of Cyprus weakens its case on Ukraine. Russian Perspectives on the War The Historical Backdrop This is the third program in a four-part series examining historical and cultural factors which shape the backdrop against which the war in Ukraine is playing out. Having devoted the first two programs to Ukrainian perspectives, in this one we shift to how Russia views both the war and Ukrainians themselves. For reasons which I explain in this episode, there is a paranoia that is characteristic of the Russian people in general and its leaders in particular. They have long seen themselves as surrounded by enemies, both east and west. Historically, they have built vast buffer zones of territory to protect their European centers from invading forces. Traversing those buffer zones exhausted Napoleon's men and supplies in 1812, then did the same to Hitler's armies in the Second World War. The war with Ukraine stems in large measure from a resurgence of that paranoia. During the Cold War, the Warsaw Pact, controlled from Moscow, buffered against another invasion from Germany or France. Ukraine buffered against attack from the Mediterranean. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, however, with former Warsaw Pact nations joining NATO and Ukraine declaring its independence, these strategic buffers were lost. With Ukraine moving to join the European Union and perhaps NATO, the last semblance of a buffer zone disappeared. Early on, as the Warsaw Pact fell apart, Russia could do little to counter its reversal of fortunes, because Russia itself was in such social turmoil and economic chaos. The calamitous fall of the Soviet Union was a sore blow to Russian nationalistic pride, even among those who were not particularly fond of the Communist regime. Putin has been successful at merging that injured pride with the historic sense of paranoia to justify reclaiming Ukraine as Moscow's own vassal. Human nature becomes more determined when its pride is injured. And paranoia will motivate people to take irrational measures. All that comes together in the way that Russia is prosecuting this war. And because of these factors, finding a workable peace settlement, short of Ukraine's complete annihilation, will do little to ease Russian paranoia. And being fought to a stalemate by a supposedly second-rate power will only add to Russia's injured pride. At best, therefore, any peace settlement promises to be a recess from hostilities, not the end of them. _________ You can download a PDF transcript of this program at https://www.upsizeyourleadership.com/episodes. And so, I think it's a good thing so that the American people get to make this decision."Wilson's remarks underscore a prevailing sentiment among many Utah Republicans, who have long advocated for preserving the integrity of the electoral process and ensuring that voters have the final say.The discussion comes on the eve of Super Tuesday and Utah's Presidential Preference Poll, where Utahns will have the opportunity to cast their votes and voice their preferences for the next President of the United States in neighborhood caucuses.Utah has 40 delegates at stake in the Presidential primary that will be divided amongst the candidates garnering votes Tuesday night.15 states and one US Territory will vote on Tuesday, Mar. 5 — doling out one third of the delegates needed to win.Registered Utah Republicans can get ready for caucus night by finding a location and registering.Utah Democrats should have received a ballot to vote and will also have an opportunity to caucus and pick delegates for state and county convention.Utah Election Information Highlights on important issues for Utah voters from Wilson's interview:RULING THAT PUTS TRUMP BACK ON THE BALLOT“I'm really glad they ruled the way we did. Go out Mm-Hmm. into your precinct, and you just get in a room, and you, uh, will decide who you want to support for the president. You'll also decide who you want to send to be state delegates to the state convention and county delegates, to your county convention, and who's going to run the precinct for the next couple of years. And it's really the grassroots of politics in Utah. And it's, uh, served us really well for a long time. I think it's going to continue to serve us well in the future. So, I've been doing this for probably almost 40 years. Yeah. And it's a great experience if you go out and do it.BORDER CRISISWell, Congress has the ability, uh, to solve this issue if they want, but quite frankly, Joe Biden has the ability to close the border down right now. It's why you saw Border Patrol agents supporting Donald Trump, because they're so frustrated right now that the president who opened up the border when he became president, has done very little to try to close things down. The tools are there, there are resources there. The political will and the leadership are not there. People are frustrated. Now, Congress can do more, and I think they should do more. And I think you'll see them leaning into this issue, uh, in the near future. But we must secure our border. You know, Heidi, we know that the border crisis right now in America is costing every single taxpayer, uh, 1200, $1,300 a year by the time you look at the burden. This is placing on our criminal justice system, on our schools, on our healthcare system. The list goes on and on. Americans are frustrated, they're angry, they should be. And, and the, the fact of the matter is, Joe Biden is the one to blame right now for this issue. We need to get this solved.UKRAINE AND ISRAEL AID TIED TO BORDEROver the course of the next few months, you've got all these different issues both domestically and internationally that Congress is trying to wrestle to the ground. I believe we need to support our ally Israel, um, in defending themselves and dealing with Hamas that needs to be done in a surgical way. And, uh, we're going to continue to support them I'm sure, as a country with the aid that they need. We've supported Israel for years. Yeah. I mean, they've been a great ally. And without them in the Middle East, uh, we would see a lot of problems I think that, uh, we don't have right now. So, uh, I'm very supportive of what's happening there With Ukraine. Uh, people are frustrated. Uh, Americans are frustrated. There's been a hundred plus billion dollars of, of American taxpayer dollars sent there.ECONOMY AND INFLATIONUtah families do feel like they've been pushed to the brink. Mm-Hmm. And, and you said the word economy, but I'll just kind of maybe peel the layer back one additional level, which is what they really feel right now is this incredible inflation. Mm-Hmm. that's hurt them. And we know in the last three years since Biden became president, the average Utah family has seen their cost-of-living increase by about $8,000 a year, Heidi. And that is real money. Everything is costing Utah so much more money, whether it's cars or housing or fuel or food. Yeah. Uh, food right now is costing as much for a Utah family as a percentage of their household budget as it did when I was in high school. I mean, that's how much Utah families are spending on food. They are frustrated, but it's inflation that they're frustrated with.HOW TO FIX INFLATION?The reason we have all this inflation is because the White House and Congress has spent so much money, and we don't have fiscal discipline in Washington, DC and you ask about the solution. Mm-Hmm., the solution is for Congress to start spending less. And in fact, spending what they generate, they're going to spend almost $2 trillion more this year back in Washington than they're generating. In what world does that make sense? That we can spend that much more money than we're generating in Washington DC and then the American people, American families are the ones that are paying the price for it. There needs to be some fiscal discipline in Washington. And here's what's great about what's happening right now in Utah. We know how to do that as Speaker of the house. Not only did I balance our budget, but I balanced our budget and cut taxes three different times for the biggest tax cuts in the history of Utah. Now, that's the kind of leadership we need in Washington is how do you balance a budget? How do you actually cut taxes? And by the way, that doesn't create the kind of inflation, uh, that you're seeing in, in Washington.SPENDING OVERRUNS COME FROM BOTH DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS- HOW WILL YOU MAKE A DENT IN THE MASSIVE DEBT?Well, it shouldn't be about campaign promises. Uh, this should be about what's right for the American people. Uh, this should be about what's right in terms of spending and controlling spending. And you've got to change the system in Washington. We've got to either pass a balance budget amendment, or we've got to do something legislatively that says Congress can't spend more money, uh, than they're taking it. And we need some people back there that have actually done the work, that have balanced budgets at a state level and have cut taxes at the same time. Utah's very unique in the sense that we have done that, but until you change the system, the only way you're going to change the system is change the people we send back there, you're going to continue to have this problem. And this is the number one issue I hear from Utahans, whether I'm up in Tremont or I'm down in St. George and everywhere in between, they want Congress to finally get their act together and start spending less money.HOME BUYINGAt the end of the day, it's supply and demand, but the other thing that's changed so dramatically for people is just what a house payment costs them. Yeah. And that's a function of inflation and interest rates. And that's a function of all the spending in Washington. Until we get spending under control in Washington, you're likely to see interest rates stay high, and you're likely to see housing be unaffordable for Utah families. And, and I do worry about the next generation. I mean, like you Heidi, I have kids that are launching in the world, and they are looking at their future, and they want to know that someday they'll be able to live the American dream of owning their own home. And we want to help them as parents, but we need leaders, uh, back in Washington, uh, and here in the state that are going to lean into this issue. You have seen a lot more done at a state level. Uh, we have done more here to help Utah families, uh, get into their first home than Washington's ever, ever thought of. Uh, all Washington's made the problem worse. Utah leaders have tried to make the problem easier to solve.WHAT SETS HIM APART?We need more people in Washington DC that have been in the trenches at a state level solving problems and have seen, uh, from a front row seat the problems in dysfunction that's created in Washington. And that's what's really unique about my candidacy. I mean, I'm the only person, uh, that is running in this race that has a record of the biggest tax cuts in the history of the state. Uh, I'm the only person running in this race that has helped initiate suits against the federal government because of all the problems that they have caused, whether it's on energy policy or public lands or other issues. And having someone that's actually lived the problems that the federal government's created, go back to Washington and prevent problems from happening and fix the problems that are already there is a unique opportunity for Utahans. And that's part of the reason I'm running.CROWDED RACEGovernor Cox is supporting my candidacy. And so, no one has the grassroots support that we have, and no one also has the support of elected officials, including sixty plus mayors from across the state and some of our biggest cities. And here is why. All these people, Heidi are wanting me to get elected to the US Senate. They know I am going to fight for Utah. They know I have got the experience to do this, and they know what this country needs. What Utah needs is to have someone that has actually done the work before.Utah U.S. Senate Candidates:John Curtis, RepublicanBrad Reed Wilson, RepublicanTrent Staggs, RepublicanBrent Orrin Hatch, RepublicanCarolyn Phippen, RepublicanClark S. We begin with breaking news, as the US carries out major airstrikes in Iraq and Syria - in response to a drone strike that killed three US service members, and wounded more than 40 others, in Jordan earlier this week. Then - it's the greatest existential threat to humanity, and the extraordinary people doing something about it. CNN Chief Climate Correspondent Bill Weir shows us the clean industrial revolution kicking into life to save our planet. Eco-warrior and former VP Al Gore is optimistic on climate activism. But he says “we've got to stop using the sky as an open sewer” now, if we want to save our planet from climate change. Gore also blasts MAGA Republicans for playing “petty” politics over the crisis at the southern border - while Ukraine runs dangerously low on munitions. With Ukraine's military aid stymied by political deadlock in DC, Putin is pressing his advantage with intensified attacks on the frontlines. In the Amanpour Archive this week - the similarities between the first Gulf War supply crunch, and Ukraine's munitions shortage today. And finally, DeepMind co-founder and tech savant Mustafa Suleyman on the opportunities and costs of using AI to supercharge productivity - as we enter what he calls “the most productive decade in history of our species.” Learn more about your ad choices. December 26th 2023 Yuriy delivers a powerful Christmas message, emphasizing the miraculous resilience and determination of Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression. He reminds us how Ukraine's resistance serves as a beacon of hope and salvation, not just for its own people but for all who yearn for freedom from tyranny and oppression. Yuriy also expresses gratitude for the support and contributions from individuals and nations involved in Ukraine's struggle. If you need a Christmas miracle, it's to me more precisely to all of us -to Ukrainians. We are currently creating a real miracle. No one in the world believed that we could withstand where Russian onslaught. Western experts gave us three to four days when it would be all over -defeat and the destruction of the state. Complex computer programs predicting the course of military actions. Promised that we would lose Odessa, Kharkiv, and Mykolaiv in the first hours of invasion, and after that the Ukrainian army would only face loss of control, disintegration and capitulation. But none of what happened. Ukraine stood its ground, Ukraine governed strength and resisted, and we in itself is a true miracle. We did not fall, did not surrender, did not give up resistance even in the face of the cruelest and most cunning enemy in the modern world. For almost two years now, we've sustained the resistance that experts predicted would last a maximum of two weeks. You know the meaning of Christmas in war is felt very keenly. What is Christmas from a Christian perspective? It's the birth of a new meaning in the world. The emergence of true light that brings joy and salvation to all who stand beside that light. It's not easy; there is often something hindering and distracting. There is always the temptation to say, but this is not the real light, but it shines somehow wrong. And Ukraine goes through almost the same. Our struggle gives people hope. A belief with courage and understanding of how unrighteousness can dispel even the gloomiest darkness. Ukraine shows everyone that salvation is possible. Salvation from tyranny, from slavery, from subjugation and oppression. Yes, the price for this salvation is very high- thousands and thousands maimed, dead, widowed, or orphaned. But if we don't resist, everyone will end up either maimed, dead, widowed or orphaned. So nothing is in vain and everything is possible. Of course, there are many unbelievers in our cause, many who are more willing to support the stronger, those who already to celebrate and shout "crucify him" when Russian occupiers siezed our cities and killed our people. But the light will overcome even this dull and cruel people who have chosen faith in violence and death. Ukraine works miracles every day, miracles of truly biblical proportions. Despite all predictions, Ukraine continues to destroy evil and bring light to people. With Ukraine, there is salvation. Salvation from fear and pain. Honest people understand this and bring gifts to Ukraine just as wise and honest Magi did to thousand years ago, bringing gifts to baby Jesus. Your gifts are rockets and tanks by the armor and cars, shells and first aid kits. We thank you for them and we will never forget your participation in our struggle. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you.

As over a year passes since the Bucha Massacre, new information and intelligence on Russian war crimes continues to emerge from the conflict. With evidence suggesting a systematic and intentional attempt to terrorise the Ukrainian population, and disturbing accounts of the unlawful deportation of Ukrainian children - lives and families are continuing to be torn apart in the Russian-Ukraine war. With Ukrainian prosecution already gathering evidence and holding trials, more revelations are expected to come out of Ukraine in the coming months. But with Ukraine holding the moral high ground of the conflict, the recent decision by the United States to provide Cluster Munitions to Ukraine raises questions about how the rest of the world will perceive the country's moral standing in the conflictIn this episode, James welcomes Professor Oona Hathaway from Yale University to the podcast to provide an update on Bucha over a year later, and examine the moral debate surrounding Cluster Munitions. With Ukraine nearly out of munitions, and worldwide supplies failing to reach demand - is it fair to say Ukraine is losing the moral high ground, or is it really their only option?Discover the past on History Hit with ad-free original podcasts and documentaries released weekly presented by world renowned historians like Dan Snow, Suzannah Lipscomb, Lucy Worsley, Matt Lewis, Tristan Hughes and more. Jeremy Konyndyk, President of Refugees International, is a humanitarian leader, emergency operator, and policy innovator. He joins us to share his thoughts on diverse crises. During the Turkey/Syria earthquake, donors failed to surge resources to Syrian civil groups, something that is indefensible a decade plus into Syria's war. U.S. policy on the southern border is narrowly understood to be law enforcement versus protection of rights of individuals in flight, a disappointment not expected of the Biden administration. USAID has struggled to overcome its internal divisions to begin building an enduring emergency health security response capability. American opponents of public health and science are winning the battle for opinion and influence, with little political leadership pushing back from the opposing side. After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, many low- and middle-income countries rejected the West's appeals for solidarity. The West had shown “zero solidarity” for their needs during the pandemic. With Ukraine, those countries are now responding “in kind.”

On May 20th, Russian forces managed to take control over the city of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine. The ‘battle of aBakhmut', which has been raging for nine months, has seen some of the bloodiest fighting in Europe since World War 2. With Ukraine investing a lot of its resources in defending the city, the fight for it took on a symbolic significance. In his speech to the U.S. Congress last year, President Volodymyr Zelensky even compared it to the decisive battle of Saratoga in the American war of independence. But now, thanks primarily to the Wagner Group, Bakhmut is in Russian hands. What are the strategic implications of the ‘fall', so to speak, of Bakhmut? Is it a pyrrhic victory for the Russians, as Ukraine and western observers seem to suggest? Whose forces have been degraded more by this long-drawn battle of attrition?
Audrey Hale committed a mass shooting at a Christian School in Nashville Tennessee. The topic of school shootings is sadly a constantly growing topic in our country of the United States of America. Will Gun control work? Do gun laws work? What can stop these mass murders from happening again? Do firearms need to be illegal? What are the case studies to support any side of the political argument? Do combat veterans get a say in who protects these schools? How can we strengthen the security of the youth? China is becoming increasingly powerful and a US Air Force secretary says he's seen nothing more disturbing than Chinas build up of it's nuclear arsenal of warheads. With Ukraine on all of our minds, Chinas next moves seem to be on the horizon. Is war avoidable at this point? Who will be the worlds next super powers if nothing is changed in this political climate? The 2023 Movie "Cocaine Bear" is a top ten movie in the United States created by Universal Pictures! It is based on the true story of a bear in Georgia overdosing on Cocaine in 1985 after an ex cop dumped the drug over the Georgia forest. The plane load was too heavy and he was forced to dump this drug out over the wilderness. Well a 185 pound black bear found it and experimented with this drug. The film is a horror comedy film of fiction. The bear did not actually kill anyone and the country singer Waylon Jennings actually bought the corpse of the bear and had it stuffed! On 24 February 2022, Vladimir Putin sent up to 200,000 soldiers into Ukraine, sparking Europe's biggest movement of refugees since World War Two. The Russian president declared his goal was to "demilitarise and denazify" Ukraine and not occupy it by force. With Ukraine forming closer ties to the West and an estimated 180,000 Russian soldiers killed or wounded, we look back at the changes of the last 12 months and what may come next. On the Sky News Daily, Sally Lockwood talks to Sky's security and defence correspondent Deborah Haynes who is in Kyiv, and Ed Arnold, a research fellow for European security at the military think tank RUSI, about how Russia's aims have changed. Events are picking up pace rapidly on the world stage and I've asked my frequent guest Brandon Weichert to join me to help explain what's happening. Brandon, geopolitical analyst and publisher of The Weichert Report, is among the best at connecting the dots globally with his bold and unnerving forecasts. Among the many issues brewing that we get into: Russia is amassing up to 400 thousand troops on Ukraine's borders for a winter offensive, objectives unknown. Nuclear escalation looms. The Chinese sent a satellite balloon hovering ominously across the entire United States as it presumably took surveillance photos. Strangely, the Biden Administration, which is all in to defend the borders of Ukraine, refused to protect America's own airspace. Why wasn't it shot down sooner? Our southern border with Mexico has been left wide open for over two years. The United States' enemies - and its friends - have watched us admit almost five million undocumented aliens, whose purposes and destinations are unknown. South Korea's president is having a public meltdown about no longer having reliable American nuclear protection. He has reason to be concerned. Joe Biden, just two weeks ago, declared that “global warming is the single most existential threat to humanity we have ever faced, including nuclear weapons.” Did the way Biden fail to confront the Chinese balloon sooner than he did reflect this priority? Brandon conjectures: “A political decision in the White House was made to let it just pass by quietly because the Biden administration didn't want to rock the boat going into their global warming negotiations with China. They worried that if they shot it down, that the Chinese would freak out and leave the meeting before anything could get done”. “If it wasn't for a local Montana newspaper, we wouldn't have known about any of this. This would have been just another conspiracy theory on the internet.” With Ukraine, United States strategic objectives could have been the preservation of the Ukrainian core in the western portion of the country and a speedy end to the fighting. Instead, the Biden administration continues to insist that Ukraine drive the Russians completely out. If this means sending in U.S. combat jets and long range missiles, the massive risk is that this widens the war, triggering our NATO agreements, leading to a general - and possibly nuclear - war in Europe. The German general von Clausewitz told us that “war is an extension of politics through other means.” Well, politics and our politicians seem to have gone mad. Worryingly, the United States is playing a weaker and weaker hand. Brandon warns that “America's political and cultural system is collapsing here at home. The rest of the world sees that. Especially in China, they talk about this all the time. China believes the Americans are declining.” There's a lot to unpack in this episode. Please listen in.
With Ukraine making massive gains on the ground, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s escalating threats "show that [he] is getting a little bit desperate," says USIP's Mary Glantz. Munich pub finds way to beat frying crunch A Munich brewpub has found a novel way to beat Europe's cooking oil shortages - letting customers pay for their beer with sunflower oil to ensure plentiful stocks for frying schnitzels. 慕尼黑一家啤酒館找出一種創新的方法來擊退歐洲的食用油短缺問題 - 讓顧客用葵花籽油來支付他們的啤酒,藉此確保炸肉排的油有充足的庫存。 With Ukraine and Russia accounting for about 80% of global exports of sunflower seed oil, many European countries including Germany have seen supplies dwindle since Russia invaded its neighbour in February. 烏克蘭和俄羅斯的葵花籽油出口量佔全球約80%,自2月俄羅斯入侵這個鄰國以來,包括德國在內的許多歐洲國家都出現葵花籽油供應不足的現象。 Managers at the Giesinger Brewery, a brewhouse and pub in the southern city of Munich, think they may have the answer, offering beer lovers a litre of their favourite brew for the same quantity of sunflower oil. 在南方城市慕尼黑的這家啤酒廠兼酒館「吉辛格啤酒廠」的經理人,認為他們可能有了解答,提供啤酒愛好者一公升他們最愛的啤酒,來換取同樣數量的葵花籽油。 "The whole thing came up because we simply ran out of oil in the kitchen and that's why we have to be inventive," the pub manager, Erik Hoffmann, told Reuters TV. 酒館經理艾瑞克.霍夫曼告訴路透電視,「這整件事情會發生,純粹是因為我們廚房的油用完了,那就是為什麼我們必須要別出心裁」。 While a litre of beer costs about 7 euros in German pubs, a one-litre bottle of sunflower oil retails for about 4.5 euros - making the offer tempting for many customers. 一公升的啤酒在德國酒館要價約7歐元,而一公升瓶裝的葵花籽油零售價則約為4.5歐元,因此這個提案對許多顧客充滿誘惑力。 Next Article German government distances itself from navy chief's comments on Putin 德國政府撇清與海軍司令對普廷評論的關係 The German government distanced itself from comments made by its navy chief after video footage emerged in which the vice-admiral said Russian President Vladimir Putin deserved respect and that Kyiv would never win back annexed Crimea from Moscow. 德國政府在海軍司令談話影片曝光後撇清關係;影片中這名中將說,俄羅斯總統普廷值得受到尊重,基輔將永遠無法從莫斯科手中奪回被兼併的克里米亞。 German Navy Chief Kay-Achim Schoenbach apologized for his "rash" comments, published on YouTube and widely circulated on German media, and called them a mistake. 德國海軍司令凱—阿希姆‧薛恩巴赫為他的「輕率」談話道歉,聲稱那些評論是個錯誤。這些談話在YouTube上被公開,並且在德國媒體廣為流傳。 In the video, Schoenbach, speaking in English, says Putin seeks to be treated at eye level by the West. "What he (Putin) really wants is respect," Schoenbach says. 在那段影片中,以英語發言的薛恩巴赫說,普廷尋求被西方平等對待。「他(普廷)真正想要的是尊重」,薛恩巴赫說。

This is my second special POLcast Episode - a tribute to Ukraine, to our Ukrainian sisters and brothers who are fighting heroically to defend their country against Putin's army. This episode is about Canadian-Polish help for Ukraine. • Toronto artists for Ukraine This huge concert “With Ukraine” was organized in Toronto by local artists to show their solidarity and love for Ukraine and to raise money for Ukraine. The idea came from two Polish folk singers from the renowned group Polky. • "United for Ukraine" - gigantic aid campaign in Edmonton "United for Ukraine" is the brainchild of of two former politicians from the Canadian province of Alberta. Nobody has ever done anything like this.
“No borders. No walls. No USA at all.” Chant by Antifa rioters marching in the streets of Denver. With Ukraine and Russia dominating the headlines, America seems to have lost focus on the border - and the war - that really counts. It's not Ukraine, it's America's southern border with Mexico. The Biden Administration seems simply to have “opened it up.” Completely. And what's happening is an ongoing catastrophe that's fueling illegal immigration, human trafficking and drug smuggling. People from over 100 countries around the world have crossed the border illegally in the last year. We need to focus on this war on our own border here, at home - a strange war where it seems our adversary is our own federal government. What the Biden administration is doing is not incompetence at protecting our border, it's a deliberate policy to open it up. But we don't have to wait for a change in the Administration. “A plain reading of the Constitution gives border state governors war powers under Article 1, Section 10, Clause 3 to interdict and remove illegal aliens to Mexico without the permission of the federal government” says former Trump homeland security official Ken Cuccinelli. If the federal government won't protect the southern border, the states themselves can; moreover, governors from non-border states can also send help. Explaining how this could happen are my guests on this episode, principals in an exciting new policy shop, the Center for Renewing America. Russ Vought, the Center's president, Director of the Office of Management and Budget for President Trump's full term in office, responsible for overseeing the implementation of the President's policy, management, and deregulatory agendas across the entire Executive Branch. And Ken Cuccinelli, Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security (DHS) and Director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) under President Trump. Ken also served as Attorney General of Virginia, where he was the first in the country to sue over Obamacare, and made critical advances against human trafficking, health care fraud, gangs and child exploitation. This is a fascinating discussion, and not only about how we might deal with our border crisis, but also the many ways we could get a federal government that works for us, rather than the other way around.

With Ukraine president Zelenskyy welcoming foreign fighters to join the struggle in Ukraine, we look at Australia's checkered history of citizens travelling abroad to distant shores in search of glory. What is legislation is there to stop them? Why might they be dangerous when they get home? And what could Sexpo possibly have to do with any of this? In 2015 we corresponded with several composers from Ukraine, at that time openly at war, about the challenges they faced. With Ukraine in the news again and the future again uncertain, we feature another small sample of the incredibly vibrant music being created by Ukranian composers today. Music by Valentin Silvestrov, Bohdana Frolyak, Ludmila Yurina and Virko Baley.
When it comes to financial markets, do narratives really matter? Or do patterns, the rhyme of bull runs and corrections, mark the true path of stocks and bonds? With Ukraine on the brink of war, inflation at 7.5% and consumer sentiment falling into the sea, all signs point to downside in the stock market. But do these themes actually predict anything? Narrative or not, the S&P index is repeating a pattern that it showcased in 2018 when the Fed tightened, inciting a sharp sell-off. This makes it more likely than not that a similar sell-off is just beginning. For us, it is time to hedge that downside in the guise of our old nemesis: SPXS. As the great Jim Bianco put it, the Fed must now make a choice. Stem inflation or let the market melt up higher. It can not do both. And the political tide is moving inexorably in the direction of everyday Americans at the expense of wealthy elites. Not that any of that actually solves the root problem, as Alex Gurevich points out. Inflation is a symptom of supply shocks as much as it is excess liquidity. Stretch this out on the horizon to 2023, and we might actually be tightening into an inverted yield curve and a recession. But those are problems for another year.
Sometimes you just have to look back at your life and relive an experience. With Ukraine and Russia recently being in the news, my Moscow experience back in 1991 vividly came back to me.A few of us might remember the time when the Soviet Union collapsed and Mikhail Gorbachev's reign came to an end. Now it is Russia that includes the great city of Moscow.I was in Moscow during the final days of the Soviet Union's existence in December, 1991, which was an unbelievable time in our World's history. My reason for being there was to assist the U.S. Embassy on some technical challenges with their telecommunications equipment. Communication, as fundamental as it was back in those days compared to today, was paramount during those difficult times. The fact that I was not even a U.S. citizen at that time added a little complication to the proceedings, but I was honored to help.Today I am both a U.K. and USA citizen. The human spirit always prevails, even through challenging times, and I gained a new found respect for the local people.I even bumped into the legendary band, The Scorpions, who had just played a concert in Moscow.Take a listen to my exploits during that trip, some of them a little daring and risky, but I survived to tell the story.Memories for a lifetime.

With Ukraine's energy scene dominated by monopolistic utilities that leave little room for innovation, green entrepreneurs Andrij and Roman Zinchenko decided to spearhead a green energy revolution in their country. In 2009, the brothers formed Greencubator, a Ukrainian NGO supporting sustainable entrepreneurship, low-carbon innovations, and green economy development in Ukraine and other former Soviet republics. Since then, Greencubator has started a variety of successful programs that promote green energy, launched the country's first municipal energy co-operative, and is currently running Ukraine's largest grant program for climate entrepreneurs. Join Professor Buzz Thompson's conversation with Andrij and Roman to hear how their efforts promote the goal of energy freedom and energy democracy in Ukraine.
