I want to get your burning questions answered and to do deep dives into topics that matter most to you. Just because I am a naturopathic doctor doesn't mean my approach is all or nothing. PSA: Climate change (or global warming, as it's more notoriously known) is not the same as the weather you're experiencing right now! This common misconception has led many people to believe that climate change just might be a hoax. It's for this reason that I wanted to talk about it on the show. What's happening with climate change? What does climate change even mean? Why is it such a controversial topic? And of course, how can we stop it?! Laura is answering these questions and more on today's episode! To view the full show notes, continue reading here or visit my website: http://www.heartfelthippie.com (www.heartfelthippie.com) Laura Diez is a sustainability expert. By day, she works for her local government in the state of Georgia in the environmental realm. By night, she uses all her knowledge about the planet and sustainability to host her very own podcast - Eco Chic. I asked Laura to be on the show because, let's face it, I'm no scientist or climate expert. I needed help to break down the big, intimidating topic of climate change and put it into terms that anyone can understand! Laura truly helped to answer some confusing questions about this matter and, most importantly, explained why climate change needs our attention right now. It was important to me that this episode air before election day is here because, well, it should influence the way that we vote in November. However, no matter when or where you're listening to this, this conversation is everlasting. Climate change is going to continue to have impacts on us, and we're going to continue to have impacts on it. Simply put, it will always be something that we should act on. In Part 1, Laura is helping us to understand what's currently happening with the global climate. She also answers some tough questions like, why should people of faith be concerned about climate change? And, why do some people deny that climate change is happening? I learned so much from Laura and I know you will too!  And of course, make sure you tune back in next week for Part 2 where we discuss the solutions to climate change. I really loved this part of the conversation because Laura gives us some practical steps we can take as individuals, but also informs us on what to look out for in public policy. Valerie and Laura dive deeper into the misconceptions of recycling, what you consume and who you support influences the climate, and the small eco-friendly changes you can make to help to start an eco-conscious life! Key Takeaways: - Your impact, or carbon footprint, has a ripple effect on the ecosystem. - Be mindful of what company you support and what you consume in order to live a more ecofriendly lifestyle.- Wastefulness is a huge task American households can undertake. - Food is often thrown out and wasted because of the perception of what food is meant to look like. - “Used By” and expiration dates are unregulated! If it’s not smelly or abnormal, then double check the produce before throwing it away! - Just because something is plastic doesn’t mean it’s recyclable. - Recycling incorrectly is just as bad as not recycling at all. IntroductionClaudia Weiss de Machado runs her own wool retail company by the name Don Baez Eco Chic. The brand sources only so-called grey wools from Uruguay and uses them undyed in their fashion and accessories products. All products are manufactured in Uruguay and sold online and through the Don Baez shop in Montevideo. In this interview, Claudia Weiss tells the story about how she got started working in the wool industry by learning directly from her father. She also speaks about her vision of making consumers into wool fans. About Claudia WeissClaudia Weiss de Machado was born in 1958 in Montevideo, Uruguay. Her Czech father Fritz Weiss, was a passionate and very successful wool exporter. Claudia attended the British Schools in Montevideo and later graduated from Sussex University (UK) with a B.A. in Economics and Italian. Later she spent one year in Rome where she developed a keen interest in fashion.  Claudia lives between Montevideo and her small organic farm near Punta del Este with her husband and three children. Claudia has worked alongside her father, who has been an important mentor for her, for 20 years. Claudia's dream had always been to start a wool brand in un-dyed fine wool, which she could source locally. She named her brand after her father, whom everyone called 'Don Baez'. In 1997 Don Baez started out making woven blankets. Since then the collection has grown to include a wide range of different products including capes, jackets, ponchos etc. Her interest in fashion, as well as her desire to support animal welfare and a healthy attitude to life (LOHAS) started at an early age. Through the brand, she has created wearable designs that are simply tailored with a feminine edge but which also emphasize the sustainability of un-dyed wool. Her intention is to make Don Baez's designs have a style of their own and be timeless and hopefully very chick. Don Baez opened its first store in 2013 in Punta Carretas - the trendiest neighborhood in Montevideo. The products are also available in many Uruguayan wineries and top hotels.

Episode 26: Eco Conscious Knitting & Niche Marketing with Lindsay Lewchuk from Knit Eco Chic

Creative Yarn Entrepreneur Show

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 23, 2015 30:40

This Week’s Episode This week I share an interview with Lindsay Lewchuk, the owner of Knit Eco Chic. I invited her to talk about her business, which is entirely focused on using organic, natural, or sustainable yarns. She shares her insights on both managing an eco-conscious business and on marketing to a smaller niche of knitters and crocheters, knit-a-longs, social media, and more. About Lindsay Lewchuk Lindsay is the knitting designer and maker behind Knit Eco Chic. She began knitting in earnest while hospitalized about a decade ago. Her medical condition limited her to the use of organic cellulose fiber yarns and bamboo needles. Her personal values also support using sustainable materials, and eventually Lindsay launched Knit Eco Chic. You can find Lindsay on Ravelry as KnitEcoChic or in the Knit Eco Chic group. Lindsay has both an Etsy shop and a growing EcoHabitude shop where she sells both patterns and hand knits using organic, natural, or sustainable yarns. Lindsay is KnitEcoChic on both Pinterest and Twitter, and you can join her mailing list here. Lindsay is also TJSpecialties on Elance, where she does freelance graphics, web design, and writing (including those pesky knitting pattern layouts). And, in case you are also a fan of Puddles, you can find his Facebook page here. About the interview In this episode, I spoke with Lindsay about Knit Eco Chic’s foundational philosophies: Knit Eco Chic…provides the highest quality hand knits and knitting patterns featuring organic, natural, socially responsible, sustainable, and alternative fiber yarns for the modern age.  Knit Eco Chic embodies three foundational philosophies: 1. Use of eco yarns 2. Knits that fit curves 3. Unique and intricate patterns These foundational philosophies are supported in both of the divisions: knitting patterns and custom hand knits. Knit Eco Chic also has a dedicated baby department! Knit Eco Chic Baby specializes in hand knit to order baby hats featuring organic, natural, sustainable, or alternative eco yarns. Lindsay talked about why she developed her business philosophy, how she uses it to guide her everyday decisions, and why she shared it on her website. Lindsay also shared her tips for other yarn-related businesses that focus on eco-friendly and/or ethically-sourced materials. (By the way, she has a great list of organic cotton yarn companies in her Ravelry group here.)  Lindsay talked about many of her marketing tactics which can apply to any business focusing on a niche or subset of yarncrafters. We also talked about knit-a-longs and a new mystery knit-a-long Lindsay is launching on March 20, 2015 for a non-pi circular shawl in organic cotton and bamboo yarn. And, we touched upon #wearyourknitting, a social media campaign Lindsay is spearheading to encourage people to showcase their hand knits online. If you enjoyed this episode The Creative Yarn Entrepreneur Show is no longer broadcasting. Episodes are available as a service to the yarn community. This episode originally aired in February, 2015. Be aware that content may be outdated. If you'd like to chat with other yarn-related business owners, join the Creative Yarn Entrepreneurs Facebook group. Shopping and fretting: the ethics of buying the right thing

Academy of Ideas

The public outrage that followed the discovery of several ‘forced labour’ labels sewn into clothes stocked by budget clothing shop Primark has brought the issue of the ethics of the supply chain back into the headlines. Just what is the real cost of cheap goods in the West? In April 2013, 1,100 people – including garment workers who had been producing clothes for UK retailers - died when the Rana Plaza commercial block in Bangladesh collapsed. Earlier this year, the Guardian claimed fishmeal used to produce farmed prawns for UK supermarkets was produced using fish caught with slave labour. These revelations fit into a history of claims made about ‘sweatshop’ conditions faced by workers producing everything from fashionable footwear to top-of-the-range consumer electronics. However the problem is not restricted to developing countries, as cases of exploitation and abuse of labourers continue to emerge across the UK, too. Some have called for UK retailers to boycott firms or even entire countries that allow unacceptable working practices. After the Rana Plaza disaster, Labour MP Michael Connarty demanded legislation to force UK firms to audit their supply chains. But others believe boycotts do more harm than good and that a better solution is to maintain commercial links while demanding suppliers improve and work towards higher standards. As a recent report by the British Retail Consortium notes: ‘Retailers drive positive change by embedding certain values and standards in their supply chain that are central to its brand and which address specific issues or concerns that are important to their customer base.’ Withdrawing entirely from a country, some argue, would actually make things worse by causing thousands of relatively poor people to lose their jobs. What is more, given the long and complicated international supply chains that big retailers deal with today, is it really possible to ensure goods are produced in an ethical fashion? Or do we need ever more scrutiny of big businesses to ensure they don’t turn a blind eye for the sake of profit? While retailers debate how best to restore trust and demonstrate that their products are ethically sourced – for example, by making details of supply chains more transparent - shoppers are under pressure to ‘buy responsibly’. Maybe it makes business sense, too, as ethical fashion labels have become trendy and no doubt attract higher profit-margins than low-cost clothing. However, some commentators warn against demonising those who seek out cheap bargains or undermining the harmless joys of shopping by turning retail therapy into an anxious moral maze of label-checking. Is virtuous shopping really a case of guilt-ridden consumers in the West showing off their consciences rather than helping exploited producers? Or is it at least better than nothing, a morally worthwhile alternative that reminds us of our responsibility to others? Could clumsy interventions by retailers, responding to pressure from campaigners, make things worse rather than better for developing-world workers? Should concerns about working conditions be dealt with by governments and workers in the producing countries rather than by shoppers and stores in the UK? Speakers Sandy Black professor of fashion & textile design & technology, London College of Fashion, University of the Arts, London; editor and co-author, The Sustainable Fashion Handbook; author, Eco Chic the Fashion Paradox Barbara Crowther director of policy and public affairs, Fairtrade Foundation Andrew Opie director for food and sustainability, British Retail Consortium Nathalie Rothschild freelance journalist; producer and reporter for Sweden's public service radio Chair Jason Smith partnerships coordinator, Debating Matters Competition; freelance journalist; co-founder, Birmingham Salon
