Sharon Hill joins us again, this time for a main segment on Gef the talking mongoose, a celebrity on the Isle of Man back in the 1930s. A new movie delves into (and somewhat mangles) the mystery, featuring Simon Pegg as Nandor Fodor and Christopher Lloyd as Harry Price. WE FINALLY DID IT. We have finished are series on the enigmatic eidolon that is Gef. In part 3 we will discuss the investigation brought forth by Nandor Fodor, as well as the book deal and court case briefly mentioned in the prior episodes. As always, we will conclude will a very lengthy discussion on our conclusions about what Gef truly was/is and the possibilities for why Gef and the Irving family were so deeply connected. In which the Mister and Monsters join me in reviewing NANDOR FODOR AND THE TALKING MONGOOSE (2023) which is to buy/rent on Prime Video.  Written and directed by Adam Sigal, the film tells the story of famed paranormal psychologist debunker, Nandor Fodor (Simon Pegg) travels to the Isle of Man to meet with the Irvings about their talking mongoose, Gef (voiced by Neil Gaiman - yes that Neil Gaiman).  The story is loosely based on a story covered in the British tabloids in the late 1930s.  Good performances and great production values unfortunately don't save the film.  The film clocks in at 1 h 36 m and is rated PG-13.  Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. During the mid-1930s, the British and overseas newspapers were filled with extraordinary tales of Gef, a creature referred to as a "talking mongoose" or "man-weasel," which was said to have appeared in the home of the Irvings, a farming family residing in a remote area of the Isle of Man. According to reports, the creature was capable of speaking in various languages, singing, stealing objects from nearby farms, and eavesdropping on local individuals.Despite the presence of written reports, magazine articles, books, several photographs, fur samples, paw prints, extensive correspondence, and eyewitness accounts, there is still no real agreement on what precisely happened to the Irving family. In this episode of 'In Conversation' Kate and Toby discuss the life of Alma Fielding, her ghost story, and the well known 1930s ghost hunter Nandor Fodor. The case of Gef, the alleged talking mongoose, which may or may not have been a poltergeist, or a ghost, or a hoax, or any one of a number of things, took place over a period of around 8 years on a remote farm in the Isle of Man in the 1930s. It was investigated by Harry Price, Nandor Fodor and other researchers, but there was never a definite conclusion as to what was going on. On this episode of The Folklore Podcast, creator and host Mark Norman talks to Christopher Josiffe, the author of the award winning book on Gef, published in 2017, and the result of 7 years of research by Chris into the subject.  

  Roy Stemman is Editor of Psychic News  was a weekly British Spiritualist newspaper published from 1932 to July 2010, and revived with a change in ownership in December 2011. The first issue of the paper was published on 28 May 1932. The name of the paper was devised by one of its founding editors, Maurice Barbanell, who said that he was told to use it by his spirit guide. The other founding members were Hannen Swaffer, a Fleet Street journalist, and Arthur Findlay, a notable figure in the history of Spiritualism in Britain. In 1938 psychical researcher Nandor Fodor was attacked in the Psychic News newspaper for his skeptical evaluation of the Thornton Heath poltergeist case. Fodor sued the newspaper for libel.[1] The publisher of Psychic News from 1932 to 1980 was Psychic Press Ltd. The newspaper was next supported by the Spiritual Truth Foundation (STF). In 1995 the Spiritualists National Union (SNU) acquired it, and both the publishing and bookshop departments were relocated to Stansted Hall — better known as The Arthur Findlay College.[2] With the rise of the Internet PN added a web site, which included a bookstore and back issue division for online sales. Although the primary focus of the Psychic News was always Spiritualism, and it was strongly associated with the SNU even before that organization acquired ownership of it, it was the policy of PN to cover a wide variety of subjects of interest to its readers. For instance, in November 1947 the paper covered the fact that a committee of Anglican ministers had supported Spiritualism in 1936 and that the report had been suppressed by the Anglican Church. This investigative report by the Psychic News caused the Psychic News itself to become the topic of articles in The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times.[4][5] In the 1950s and 1960s, with the rise of the neopagan religion of Wicca, several articles about Wicca and witchcraft were published in the magazine, including “Genuine Witchcraft Is Defended” by Robert Cochrane. From that time forward the newspaper dealt with other paranormal, supernatural and New Age topics in addition to spiritualism.
