A gladiator named Diodorus defeated his opponent Demetrius in the arena, accepted his submission, discarded his own helmet and shield, and reached for the palm branch that marked his victory. Then the referee refused to honor the submission and ordered the fight to continue. Diodorus was killed. His tombstone, which survives, reads: "Murderous Fate and the cunning treachery of the referee killed me, and leaving the light, I have gone to Hades." Another gladiator named Urbicus, who had once spared a defeated opponent and was later killed by that same man in a rematch, left behind the most chilling last words in Roman history: "I advise that he who defeats a man should kill him." Today's guest is Harry Sidebottom, author of *Those Who Are About to Die: A Day in the Life of a Roman Gladiator*. Structured as a single twenty-four-hour cycle from the gladiators' last supper through the morning beast hunts, midday executions, and afternoon combat, Sidebottom's book dismantles almost everything Hollywood has taught us about the arena. We discuss why gladiators were deliberately fattened on barley stew so their subcutaneous fat would produce spectacular bleeding from non-fatal wounds, how Roman senators kept illegally sneaking into gladiatorial schools despite repeated bans stretching across two centuries, why the Colosseum was built on top of Nero's artificial lake using plunder from the sack of Jerusalem, and how Galen pioneered human surgery by first vivisecting a live monkey and then treating wounded gladiators at Pergamum. We also look at why epileptics drank gladiator blood as medicine (and why Roman doctors reluctantly admitted it might work), how twenty-nine Saxon prisoners strangled each other without a rope rather than fight, and why Constantine did not actually abolish gladiatorial combat despite what every Christian source claims.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
"You have to have influence. That's the relational collateral that gets everything done. Think of it like a bank account — the more you put in, the more you can take out when you need to."Welcome back to The Speaker Lab Podcast! In this episode, host Dan Irvin sits down with Kevin Sidebottom — a keynote speaker, sales trainer, and author who has spent two decades studying one question: why do people buy? And here's the fun part: the guy who teaches sales for a living is now out there selling himself, building his own speaking business. Oh, and he's a self-described introverted electrical engineer. As he puts it — he's not a unicorn.Kevin and Dan dig into why introversion is actually a speaking superpower (airports, Ubers, and hotel rooms are basically an introvert's training camp), what joining The Speaker Lab's Speaker Bureau unlocked in his positioning, and the warm-up system that took his outreach from crickets to three calls in one week: connect on LinkedIn first, publish consistently, and let your content make the deposit before the email ever lands. Then it gets tactical. Kevin breaks down why event buyers see speakers as commodities — and how influence is the only real tiebreaker. He shares his timeline for pitching January sales kickoffs six months out, why he refuses the shotgun approach in favor of the rifle scope, and the mindset he learned from a Navy SEAL mentor: follow a process, move forward, adapt, repeat.Whether you're hearing way more no's than yeses right now or you're ready to overhaul your outreach entirely, this episode is a sales education most speakers never get! You'll learn:Why introverts make exceptional speakers — and how Kevin recharges with JOMO (the joy of missing out)What the Speaker Bureau's gap report revealed about his positioning ("I was mortified — but gaps are opportunities")Kevin's LinkedIn warm-up system: weekly blog plus video before any cold email goes outWhy buyers see speakers as commodities — and how influence breaks the tieThe mentor wisdom that stuck: "If someone says yes too quickly, be scared"How "it doesn't have to be me" outreach to associations builds influence by the bucketWhy making the customer the hero of their story is the key to word-of-mouth bookingsThe six-months-out timeline for pitching corporate sales kickoffsThe rifle versus shotgun approach to outreach — fewer targets, deeper researchKevin's two signature talks: Sales Titans (Built, Not Born) and Magnetic InfluenceAnd much, much more!"You're a salesperson as a speaker, because you have a business. We have our fair share of bizarre rulers in the twenty-first century, but the subject of today's episode makes Putin, Trump and Kim Jong Il seem rather tame. According to the Oxford academic and bestselling novelist Harry Sidebottom, our guide this week, the Roman Emperor Heliogabalus was the maddest and baddest of them all. Heliogabalus turned Rome upside down as he rampaged over political and religious tradition during his lust-fuelled, four-year reign, contributing to the instability and chaos of the later third century AD. In this special end of year episode, we get into the spirit of Heliogabalus by allowing Harry Sidebottom to trample on our own tradition of choosing just one year in history to travel back to. Today we visit three separate years, 218, 220 and 222 so we can hear the full extraordinary story he tells in his new book on the maddest emperor of them all. The characters and stories that feature in this episode of Travels Through Time form part of Sidebottom's latest book. The Mad Emperor: Heliogabalus and the Decadence of Rome is out now. Show notes Scene One: 1 May 218. Heliogabalus' grandmother sneaks him out of Emesa (modern day Homs) in Syria to start the revolt that will elevate him to the position of Emperor of Rome. Scene Two: Midsummer's Day 220. Heliogabalus holds a huge parade in Rome to demonstrate his new religion. Scene Three: March 222. Heliogabalus is murdered on the orders of his grandmother. Memento: Heliogabalus' horn. The teenage emperor Heliogabalus was a polyamorous, sex positive, trans person who began life as a refugee; he was also a profiligate, irresponsible, bloodthirsty, fundementalist tyrant who built a gold statue of himself and murdered his own tutor. In this episode of the podcast we explore the decadence of the Roman empire through the lens of the life of an almost forgotten, remarkable young man and ask whether it is ever right to make heroes or villains from historical actors. Madison Sidebottom is a Civil Engineer currently working towards her Professional Surveyor License. She has a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from Western Kentucky University.Episode NotesMadison shares her experiences as a new civil engineer - her challenges starting out as one of the only women in her department in her company. How an internship helped her not only figure out what she wanted to do as a civil engineer, but also was such a positive job experience, that it helped when she encountered a more challenging job situation after graduation.Madison shares how she got interested in civil engineering (cows - who knew cows had anything to do with civil engineering??) and what her future career plans are (running the world - I have no doubt that she can!). Madison is from central Kentucky and grew up in an area with few engineering or STEM influences. We also talk about the importance of women in STEM in media.Music used in the podcast: Higher Up, Silverman Sound StudioAcronyms, Definitions, and Fact CheckA Professional Surveyor is an accredited professional who conducts land surveys to measure and define real property and its boundaries. The professional may denote their certification as Professional Surveyor (P.S.), Licensed Surveyor (L.S.), Professional Land Surveyor (P.L.S.), Registered Land Surveyor (R.L.S.), Registered Professional Land Surveyor (R.P.L.S.), or Professional Surveyor and Mapper (P.S.M.). In the U.S., the most common designation is P.S., while in Canada they are referred to as Canada Land Surveyor (C.L.S.). Licensed Surveyors may work as a sole proprietor or contract surveyor, or may be employed by a Land survey company. Land surveying companies often take the form of a survey coordination firm, where a large network of professional surveyors are contracted by a smaller group of staff professional surveyors. The staff surveyors serve as the single point of contact with the client, coordinate with the contract surveyor to conduct the land survey, and then review the land survey or “plat” for the client's specifications and quality assurance/quality control. Licensed Surveyors are considered distinct from professional engineers; however, the fields are often closely related, particularly in civil engineering. (https://www.partneresi.com/resources/glossary/professional-land-surveyor)New dinosaur tracks have been uncovered in Texas due to a severe drought that dried up a river. The new tracks, found at Dinosaur Valley State Park, had been buried under layers of sediment. The park is located southwest of Dallas. Many parts of Texas have experienced severe drought this summer. The park, where visitors can observe dinosaur tracks and other wildlife and camp has been under a "burn ban effect" – meaning no fires allowed, due to the drought. The tracks at the park date back 113 million years and the majority of them belong to two species: A theropod called Acrocanthosaurus and a sauropod called Sauroposeidon, Garcia said. An Acrocanthosaurus would stand about 15 feet tall as an adult and weight close to seven tons. Sauroposeidon would be about 60 feet tall and weigh about 44 tons as an adult.
