We have our fair share of bizarre rulers in the twenty-first century, but the subject of today's episode makes Putin, Trump and Kim Jong Il seem rather tame. According to the Oxford academic and bestselling novelist Harry Sidebottom, our guide this week, the Roman Emperor Heliogabalus was the maddest and baddest of them all. Heliogabalus turned Rome upside down as he rampaged over political and religious tradition during his lust-fuelled, four-year reign, contributing to the instability and chaos of the later third century AD. In this special end of year episode, we get into the spirit of Heliogabalus by allowing Harry Sidebottom to trample on our own tradition of choosing just one year in history to travel back to. Today we visit three separate years, 218, 220 and 222 so we can hear the full extraordinary story he tells in his new book on the maddest emperor of them all. The characters and stories that feature in this episode of Travels Through Time form part of Sidebottom's latest book. The Mad Emperor: Heliogabalus and the Decadence of Rome is out now. Show notes Scene One: 1 May 218. Heliogabalus' grandmother sneaks him out of Emesa (modern day Homs) in Syria to start the revolt that will elevate him to the position of Emperor of Rome. Scene Two: Midsummer's Day 220. Heliogabalus holds a huge parade in Rome to demonstrate his new religion. Scene Three: March 222. Heliogabalus is murdered on the orders of his grandmother. Memento: Heliogabalus' horn. People/Social Presenter: Violet Moller Guest: Harry Sidebottom Production: Maria Nolan Podcast partner: Ace Cultural Tours Theme music: ‘Love Token' from the album ‘This Is Us' By Slava and Leonard Grigoryan Follow us on Twitter: @tttpodcast_ Or on Facebook See where 218 fits on our Timeline
The teenage emperor Heliogabalus was a polyamorous, sex positive, trans person who began life as a refugee; he was also a profiligate, irresponsible, bloodthirsty, fundementalist tyrant who built a gold statue of himself and murdered his own tutor. In this episode of the podcast we explore the decadence of the Roman empire through the lens of the life of an almost forgotten, remarkable young man and ask whether it is ever right to make heroes or villains from historical actors. Madison Sidebottom is a Civil Engineer currently working towards her Professional Surveyor License. She has a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from Western Kentucky University.Episode NotesMadison shares her experiences as a new civil engineer - her challenges starting out as one of the only women in her department in her company. How an internship helped her not only figure out what she wanted to do as a civil engineer, but also was such a positive job experience, that it helped when she encountered a more challenging job situation after graduation.Madison shares how she got interested in civil engineering (cows - who knew cows had anything to do with civil engineering??) and what her future career plans are (running the world - I have no doubt that she can!). Madison is from central Kentucky and grew up in an area with few engineering or STEM influences. We also talk about the importance of women in STEM in media.Music used in the podcast: Higher Up, Silverman Sound StudioAcronyms, Definitions, and Fact CheckA Professional Surveyor is an accredited professional who conducts land surveys to measure and define real property and its boundaries. The professional may denote their certification as Professional Surveyor (P.S.), Licensed Surveyor (L.S.), Professional Land Surveyor (P.L.S.), Registered Land Surveyor (R.L.S.), Registered Professional Land Surveyor (R.P.L.S.), or Professional Surveyor and Mapper (P.S.M.). In the U.S., the most common designation is P.S., while in Canada they are referred to as Canada Land Surveyor (C.L.S.). Licensed Surveyors may work as a sole proprietor or contract surveyor, or may be employed by a Land survey company. Land surveying companies often take the form of a survey coordination firm, where a large network of professional surveyors are contracted by a smaller group of staff professional surveyors. The staff surveyors serve as the single point of contact with the client, coordinate with the contract surveyor to conduct the land survey, and then review the land survey or “plat” for the client's specifications and quality assurance/quality control. Licensed Surveyors are considered distinct from professional engineers; however, the fields are often closely related, particularly in civil engineering. (https://www.partneresi.com/resources/glossary/professional-land-surveyor)New dinosaur tracks have been uncovered in Texas due to a severe drought that dried up a river. The new tracks, found at Dinosaur Valley State Park, had been buried under layers of sediment. The park is located southwest of Dallas. Many parts of Texas have experienced severe drought this summer. The park, where visitors can observe dinosaur tracks and other wildlife and camp has been under a "burn ban effect" – meaning no fires allowed, due to the drought. The tracks at the park date back 113 million years and the majority of them belong to two species: A theropod called Acrocanthosaurus and a sauropod called Sauroposeidon, Garcia said. An Acrocanthosaurus would stand about 15 feet tall as an adult and weight close to seven tons. Sauroposeidon would be about 60 feet tall and weigh about 44 tons as an adult. This week we're looking at a request from many moons ago and revisiting one of RJ's favorite topics - muppets! Or at least, Jim Henson Company critters. This episode's ranking song is "Goodbye Song" from Bear in the Big Blue House. Thank you to paulsebert for suggesting "There's a Promise!" Thank you to Muppet Mindset for highlighting "Legend of the Winter Berry"!

Growing up in the Sidebottom household as a kid, one of the most played board games was Pictionary. Our family loved this game, and we had so many fun memories playing it together. This was all thanks to, today's guest Ron Angel as he created this fantastic board games as a 26-year-old. At 26 years-old today's guest, Rob Angel was working evenings as a waiter, while spending days in his back yard with a paperback Webster’s Dictionary, a No. 2 pencil and a yellow legal pad, creating the phenomenally successful board game Pictionary. Rob and his friends built the first 1000 games together in his tiny one-bedroom apartment. They did not have some how-to-manual to follow when it came to creating a board game. They just did what they loved. Rob and his mates followed their intuition. They worked hard at it day in and day out, keeping an unwavering entrepreneurial spirit of building Pictionary into the global powerhouse that was its destiny. For the next 17 years, this relentless dedication resulted in distribution in 65 countries in 45 languages, with over 38 Million Pictionary games being enjoyed by people from diverse cultures and backgrounds around the world. Rob sold the brand to Mattel, Inc., in 2001 who now proudly carries on and continues the game's legacy. Today Rob shares this epic journey and so much more. Welcome to episode number 150 of the podcast. Today's episode is very open, honest and raw around mental health, depression and suicide. Please be aware of this before you start to listen. Today's episode is the proudest I have been since starting this podcast three years ago. This episode was really confronting for Dad and myself. We were both extremely nervous as you will be able to tell at the start of the conversation. The reason I wanted to share Dad's story was for myself to show how far we have come over the past twenty years as father and son, but also to help others around mental health and starting conversations. I am really proud of Dad and the outstanding work he has done on himself and 100's of others over the years. If today's chat helps one other person, it is a win for both of us. I love my father very much and am honoured to have him on the podcast for the 150th episode. If you would like to reach other to Kevin or myself, you can do so on the following links below, and I will pass it all on to him for you. Thanks again for everyone's support, love and kind words on the podcast. It is something that I am very proud of, and cant wait to continue delivering awesome guests in the future. Have a great day, everyone. Cheers Dale https://energetic.education/ https://www.instagram.com/dalesidebottom/ https://twitter.com/DaleSidebottom dale@energetic.education

Episode 8: The Rise of Black Women and Gun Ownership Upon the inauguration of President Trump, we have seen an obvious surge in African American gun owners, and one can question if the increase we’ve noticed has been trending upward over the last 30 years. The most dramatic increase we’ve seen are those of women. Black women are among the higher rated individuals of gun ownership. In addition to political uncertainty, there are other reasons behind an individual owning a gun, from personal safety to self-empowerment. We will discuss the rise of Black women gun owners changing the narrative. Guest Momologist: LaTasha Oliver is the Chief Operator for Body By “O” and Body By “O” Tactical. She began her endeavors as a personal trainer with the organization in December 2014 alongside her now husband Oliver Kingdom. Her experience as a firearms instructor began in August 2016. LaTasha is still in training to become an effective and proficient firearms instructor. Her current title with Body By "O" Tactical is Range Safety Officer (RSO). Her role in Body By “O” operations include the developing and evaluation of programs on both the fitness and firearms side. Her focus in the organization is geared toward the Black women coming for services. LaTasha is also a currently enrolled in the graduate Social Work program at University of Texas at Arlington. She specializes in macro social work and is scheduled to graduate in December 2018. Her passion for the well-being of the Black community, with emphasis of Black women drives her work with Body By “O” and her future plans as a macro practice social worker. LaTasha is originally from Shreveport, Louisiana, born and raised. Business opportunities for Body By “O” and her choice in graduate school influenced her decision to leave Shreveport and move to Dallas. Outside of work and school, LaTasha spends time doing things she loves like reading, cooking, date nights with her husband and being a tv junkie. LaTasha has been with her husband for 4 years and married 2. She recently celebrated her 2-year anniversary, 34th birthday, and son’s 10-year birthday all in the month of June. Georgina Ferry interviews Eric Sidebottom. Eric Sidebottom has been associated with the Dunn School for more than 50 years, as medical student, lecturer, and recently, official historian. Sidebottom came to Oxford to read medicine at a time when two Nobel prizewinners, Howard Florey and Hans Krebs, were still lecturing to undergraduates. He completed his medical training at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London and came to the Dunn School as one of Henry Harris’s first DPhil students in 1966. Sidebottom became interested in cancer, and used Harris's cell fusion technique to explore the ability of cancer cells to spread throughout the body, or metastasise. Following the death of John French, Harris appointed him to organise all the teaching in the department, which led him to administrative roles including chairing the board of the Faculty of Medicine. In the late 1980s Sidebottom moved to the Imperial Cancer Research Fund as Assistant Director of Clinical Research. Returning to the Dunn School after five years, he has since focused on the history of Oxford medicine, publishing Oxford Medicine: A Walk Through Nine Centuries, and Penicillin and the Legacy of Norman Heatley (with David Cranston).

The third and final round of dual position adjustments rolled out on Sunday evening. A group of 15 players holding a single position status were awarded a secondary position based on a changed role in their team in recent weeks. Champion Data, the official stats gurus of the AFL, keep tabs on every player in every game and have highlighted those who are playing in a different position to their initial Fantasy position allocated. Fantasy coaches find most value in players who are originally listed as midfielders and acquire either forward or defender status. That's not to say the flexibility of a forward or defender adding midfield status isn't a good thing, but at this stage of the season it's all about fielding your best 22. Collingwood's Steele Sidebottom ranks second at the club for disposals inside 50 since round 12 and shares his time between the wing and forward line. At $635,000 it is going to take a decent upgrade to grad the new No. 1 Fantasy forward who is averaging 108.8 this season. It'll be worth paying the big bucks for Sidebottom as he has score 100 or more in each of his last nine games. Connor Blakely's role playing across half back has seen him gain defender status. Averaging 110.8 in his last five matches, and top scoring in the Western Derby on Sunday with 149, Blakely is relishing his new role and his Fantasy owners are enjoying the ride! On this week's episode of the podcast, The Traders discuss all 15 DPP additions and give their take on the Fantasy relevance as we head towards the last six rounds of the season. Also in this week's podcast: - How round 17 played out - Fantasy news including injuries, suspensions, "Magoos news" and more - What to do with Patrick Dangerfield - The best Fantasy run home - Roy's rolling best 22 - Your burning questions answered

Rhodri Marsden has his finger in many creative and media pies. A journalist for publications including The Independent, writer of talks and books, keyboardist in Scritti Politti and Dream Themes, musical saw player, and prolific and entertaining tweeter with a huge following, he's constantly generating new material and surrounded by creative people – but interestingly, doesn't classify himself as 'creative'. Rhodri knew Chris Sievey the man behind Frank Sidebottom, and played in the band supporting Frank's act. We talk about Rhodri's musical background, his current projects, the importance of just making stuff, and what it's like to be someone who likes an efficient system, yet who seems destined, like an inspirational Midas, to make creativity happen wherever he goes. With Matthew d'Ancona Jon Ronson discusses Frank - which he co-wrote with Peter Straughan (The Men Who Stare At Goats). The fictional film was inspired by Jon's experience of touring in Frank Sidebottom's cult band. Ronson talks about why he didn't make a biopic, his relationship with Sidebottom creator Chris Sievey; and working with Michael Fassbender, who plays Frank and wears a fake head for the majority of the film. The multi Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winning series, 24, is about to return. Four years have passed and Kiefer Sutherland's Jack Bauer is now living in London and being hunted by the CIA. But then Jack learns of a threat to kill the US President during an official visit to the British Prime Minister, and decides he has to come out of hiding, to prevent it. Critic Sarah Crompton joins Matthew to assess how Jack fares this side of the Atlantic. Award winning composer Julian Anderson talks about his new opera Thebans, based on Sophocles' tragedies. From early Victorian pamphlets to the latest underground offerings, a new exhibition explores the world of British comics. It includes work by Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore and Posy Simmonds and a specially commissioned piece by Tank Girl artist Jamie Hewlett and looks at the way graphic novels have entertained, shocked, disturbed and amused readers for over two hundred years. Producer Timothy Prosser.
Greg Doran is one of those lucky people who seem to have found his perfect place in life. From the age of 13, when his mother first took him to the theatre in Stratford, Shakespeare's been his passion; as a boy he dedicated himself to seeing every single Shakespeare play - sometimes managing to watch three Macbeths in a day. So - what better job than Artistic Director of our great national Shakespeare company, a role he took on 18 months ago. His production of Richard II with David Tennant in the lead opens on 10 October, and he's directing Henry IV next year with his partner Anthony Sher playing Falstaff. Doran doesn't come from a theatrical background - his father ran a nuclear power station. But his passion for music began early, thanks to a concert in the local village hall in Lancashire. A friend of his mother's, Mrs Sidebottom, got up on stage and sang 'Blow the Wind Southerly'. And young Greg was hooked. That haunting folk song begins his choice of music - sung in this case by Kathleen Ferrier. Other choices include Duke Ellington, a song by Cervantes, and a Vivaldi Concerto which changed Doran's life when he heard it in Paris. It was a low point - a love affair had ended, his ambition to be an actor was foundering. And the music spoke to him, and gave him a new direction. In Private Passions, he talks to Michael Berkeley about his passion for Shakespeare, and about his relationship with Antony Sher. Its foundations are a shared life in theatre, but also a love of food: when Anthony's depressed, Greg cooks for him the comfort food he ate as a child in South Africa. He's even learned how to make a special lamb stew - and he gives us the recipe: "I believe there is a Jewish saying that food is love. For me, tomato bredie is an expression of love." First broadcast in October 2013.
