The saying goes that there are "lies, damn lies, and statistics," and in the world of presenting, an often misquoted statistic claims that 55% of audience impressions are based on appearance. While this stems from Professor Mehrabian's research at UCLA, it's crucial to understand the context: this percentage applies when the content and delivery of a presentation are incongruent. When a speaker's words don't match their presentation style, audiences can become distracted, especially in today's world filled with distractions like smartphones. As speakers, it's our responsibility to maintain audience engagement. High-energy presentations, which I strive to deliver, can generate heat, making clothing choices critical. For instance, I avoid wearing light blue shirts, as sweat can create a distracting two-tone effect. Instead, I prefer white shirts and always wear a jacket to maintain a professional appearance. The sight of a speaker with sweaty armpits is unappealing and distracting. Proper fit is also essential. An ill-fitting suit can disrupt the audience's focus. I recommend avoiding bright jackets during presentations; they draw attention away from your message. Instead, keep the focus on your words. When presenting on a panel, be mindful of your posture, especially with leg crossing. It can lead to awkward views of hairy legs or ankles. To avoid this, I wear long socks. While I enjoy bright ties, I choose muted options for presentations to prevent competing for attention with my face. One of my pet peeves is when men allow gaps between the tie knot and shirt collar. This oversight can be distracting. I also shorten my tie length slightly so that it doesn't peek out from under the jacket, which helps maintain a polished appearance. Attention to footwear is also crucial. Shoes should be spotless and well-maintained; scuffed shoes convey a lack of professionalism. Ensure that your belt matches your shoes—brown with brown and black with black. Mismatched accessories can undermine your credibility. Nametags, often made of distracting plastic, should not be worn while presenting. Instead, place them on the table or lectern to avoid visual distractions. While this discussion primarily addresses men's attire, similar principles apply to women. The key is to prioritize facial visibility over fashion, ensuring that nothing detracts from the power of your message.

As he became the fastest monoskier in the world, he and his female counterpart started a monoski instructional camp to help others unlock their potential without enduring the pain and frustration that they had. Members of those camps went on to win National, World Championship and Paralympic medals. When he attempted to become the first unassisted paraplegic to summit Mt Kilimanjaro, he stood on the shoulders of his heroes to turn the impossible into reality and give others the courage to confront their fears to live and perform most fully. 127: Chris Waddell: American Paralympic Sit-Skier and Wheelchair Track Athlete, and Founder of One Revolution shares how he went from being paralysed from the waist and found his summit of inner strength and determination to win 13 Paralympic medals. Chris Waddell  Chris Waddell, who grew up in Western Massachusetts, an hour and a half from Boston,  experienced his life-changing accident while ski racing with his brother while on break from Middlebury College. Chris said that, ‘In the middle of a turn, my ski popped off. It was as freak as things go. There was no reason. It was a warm day. It was soft. I fell in the middle of the trail. I didn't hit anything but the ground. But whatever I did, I must have done it in a weird way. So I broke two vertebrae, damaged the spinal cord. I don’t remember anything after losing my ski.’ Learn how Chris Waddell went from this traumatic injury to earning 13 Paralympic medals as well as getting inducted into the Paralympic Hall of Fame.    On this episode of Finding Your Summit Podcast, we talk with Chris Waddell, American Paralympic Sit-Skier and Wheelchair Track Athlete, and Founder of One Revolution. The chat takes place in Squaw Valley during the Spartan World Championships Media Fest. Chris was parlyized in college from the waist down, and currently gets around in a wheelchair. “Actually when I was leaving the hospital the doctor called me into his office and he said, ‘You are not ready to leave because you haven’t been depressed,’ which is perplexing. But he was worried that I was in denial. For me, I was like, I will be depressed later. But right now, I need all my energy going into getting better. It was the most powerful I have ever been.”    What You Will Learn:   One key thing that radiates from Chris Waddell is that he has a positive bright outlook on life. “Goals are easy to set when everything is going great. What really becomes challenging and meaningful is when everything is against you.” How did he change to such a strong mindset? With his body losing weight and not being able to be independently mobile, he became mentally strong to realize what is possible and maintain hope to give his body the best opportunity to heal.    “The first thing I needed to accomplish? Wow. The first thing was getting out of bed. Getting into the wheelchair.” He had to learn a process from a nurse to get himself up by putting his hands in his pockets and using his elbows. After being bed-ridden for such an extensive time, his weight had dropped down to about 125 pounds at this point.   What did it take to have the courage to get back out skiing and learning to do so with one ski? Seeing a woman who was a one-legged skier was a great model for what was possible. He accepted an offer from a friend to be in a documentary about adaptive skiing. Friends of Middlebury Skiing bought Chris his first monoski. “I wanted to do things that were impossible. I wanted to stretch their imaginations.”    Aside from have extremely supportive parents that helped to provide him strength, Chris Waddell’s Middlebury coach was a huge mentor that never gave up on him, and told Chris why he was so abiment to assist him, “There are times that you just want to do the right thing. There are times in your life where you are required to do the right thing, and this was the right thing to do.”    How was Chris Waddell subsidizing his life during this period? “Back then, it was a matter of getting sponsors. I was lucky. I had some sponsors that came onboard. Swissy Army, a friend of mine’s father was the owner of Swiss Army of watches and knives and stuff like that.” Chris Waddell never got paid to train and compete directly. But he also got a $2000 sponsorship from Kodak and had to live from couch to couch while he competed. He got paid to tell his story.    The Leap to the Paralympics    “There are three classes of mono skiers and I was in the most disabled of the three. So, to basically have the muscles right underneath the sternum, corresponding muscles on the back. So not a lot of torso balance. There were guys in the other classes that were double amputees that had the muscles all the way down to their knees.” Chris was committed to beat these other guys, even when he was told that it would never happen. In Lillehammer, Norway during the 1994 Winter paralympics, Chris Waddell beat all of the mono skiers in the world in the down-hill race.   Climbing Kilimanjaro in a Wheelchair    During this episode of Finding Your Summit Podcast, Chris Waddell also talks about how on September 30th, 2009 he became the first paraplegic to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. He also named the 2010 Shining Star of Perseverance Honoree by the WillReturn Council how honor those who overcome disabilities to succeed in the workplace and society. Also, hear all about his organization “One Revolution” that aims to create positive change through the use of “Nametags” that define oneself.    Links to Additional Resources: Chris Waddell: Linkedin Facebook Chris Waddell’s Website: chriswaddellspeaking.com Laird Superfood – Code: Markp20 [Sponsor] Cascade Mountain Tech [Sponsor]

The Buyer's Journey
Snap Publishers' Views Are Dropping Significantly Since Redesign - April 13, 2018

Today's Commexis Cast discusses Snap publisher's woes with the latest Snapchat redesign, some saying their views have dropped by more than half. Madison Malone Kircher has the full story on NYMag, where many publishers anonymously spoke to her about their worries since the latest Snapchat retooling. For those unfamiliar, Snapchat released a redesign to their app that aimed to separate content from user's friends and content from publishers. Previously, the content had lived one page where users could find their friend's Snap stories, and then the publisher content. Now, a page is devoted to each. One source that Kircher spoke with said that their number of viewers increased, but their time spent on the content went down. This is due in part to Snap's automatic viewing system which queues up content from other publishers after another publisher's story ends. A few sources also discussed their dismay with the sales team response. You may remember that Snap laid off over 100 sales and marketing team members in March, as well as over 100 engineers. Matt and Phillip discuss the problems with Snap's redesign, as well as the worries that publishers are having. Secondly, Tech Crunch reports that Instagram will be "borrowing" a feature from Snapchat. Instagram is testing "Nametags" which function almost identically to Snapcodes, the QR codes Snap users could scan to add on another as friends on the platform. Today's cast: Phillip Brooks (Commexis Lead Strategist) and Matthew McGrorty (Commexis Videographer/Podcaster). Join the Commexis team as we add context to these stories for the busy CMO. Chris Waddell, world-class athlete and founder of One Revolution, is turning perceptions of disability upside-down. Chris was a competitive skier in college when he broke his back, rising to become the most decorated mono-skier in men’s Paralympic history. He launched One Revolution to redefine disability. More about Chris: Chris Waddell always thought that the lessons he learned in sports would provide the foundation for later success. As a ski racer at Middlebury College in 1988, he had no idea how profoundly one moment could change and paradoxically enhance that conviction. On December 20th his ski popped off in the middle of a turn. He fell, broke two vertebrae, and damaged the spinal cord. Paralyzed from the waist down he learned and achieved more than he could have imagined. He returned to college just two months after the accident, started monoskiing in less than a year and was named to the US Disabled Ski Team a little more than two years after that paradoxical moment. With 12 Paralympic medals, he became the most decorated male monoskier in history. Also a track athlete, he’s one of a handful to have won World Championships in both the winter and the summer. He competed in four Winter Paralympics winning 12 medals and three Summer Paralympics winning a silver medal in the 200 meters in Sydney. In World Championship competition, Waddell won 9 total medals: four gold, one silver, one bronze; six in the winter and three in the summer. Waddell was inducted into the US Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame and the Paralympics Hall of Fame. The Dalai Lama honored him as an “Unsung Hero of Compassion”. People Magazine named him one of the “Fifty Most Beautiful People in the World.” Skiing Magazine placed him amongst the “25 Greatest Skiers in North America.” Middlebury College presented him with a Doctorate in Humane Letters. In September of 2009 Waddell became the first paraplegic to summit Mt. Kilimanjaro almost entirely under his own power. His team carried him for approximately 100 feet of the 19,340 mountain. The film documenting the climb has won awards throughout the world. He has appeared on Dateline, Oprah and 20/20. He is the founder of the One Revolution Foundation and speaks throughout the country sharing his universal message, “It’s not what happens to you. It’s what you do with what happens to you.” Currently Waddell resides in Park City, Utah where he can be seen out and about keeping fit on his hand cycle and racer. He travels the country year round presenting the Foundation’s Nametags school program, speaking to corporate groups and screening the documentary. Waddell is working on a book to chronicle his journey while also planning his newest adventure – a cross country bike tour to highlight the foundation. He also continues to be actively involved with the Paralympics as an ambassador for the International Paralympic Committee and is a color analyst for the Games.
