Sophie Morgan is a TV presenter, Conde Nast Traveller columnist and disability advocate. When she was 18, on the night she received her A level results, Sophie crashed her car, and was left instantly paralysed from the chest down. Everything she had dreamed for her life was instantly forgotten and her journey to rediscover herself and build a different life began. “I want to go to some extraordinary places, meet some extraordinary people and do some extraordinary things", she wrote from her hospital bed the day she was discharged. But as a recently injured paraplegic woman, she would go on to face barriers as complex and nuanced as her impairment itself. In her words: “When it comes to travel, total satisfaction can be hard – if not impossible – for disabled people to find.” Sophie first appeared in BBC Two's show Beyond Boundaries which followed 11 disabled people on a 220-mile trek across Nicaragua, alongside another previous podcast guest, Amar Latif. After that, her career on TV grew, and she became one of the first female wheelchair users globally to host on TV, playing a part in transforming the representation of disability on screen, as the lead presenter on Channel 4's broadcast of the Summer Paralympics, fronting her own prime-time travel series, documentaries as well as being a regular panelist for ITV's Loose Women. She's currently spearheading the global disability rights campaign Rights On Flights which has taken her to the White House to meet the President, and we talk a lot on today's episode about accessible travel and ableism - it's an issue that has been hugely overlooked in the travel sphere for too long, and hearing Sophie's experiences as a wheelchair user, on planes in particular, but within travel more broadly, really opened my eyes to the significant change that needs to take place to make travel accessible for everyone. Having said that, Sophie has been travelling literally non-stop for the last year, I mention it at the start of the episode all the places and adventures that she's been on recently, so not only will today's episode open your eyes to things you may not have thought of before - it will also fuel your wanderlust for your own future adventures. We're not done with Tokyo as the Paralympic Games begin today. In case you're wondering, they're called the Paralympics. The name comes from the Greek preposition "para" (beside or alongside) and the word "Olympic." The Paralympic Games exist side-by-side with the Olympic Games. These athletes have amazing stories to share, so here's a little bit more about what you can expect as you tune in over the next two weeks. 1. The Summer Paralympics debuted in 1960 in Rome. Tokyo is the first city to host the Paralympic Games twice. (The games take place in the same location as the Summer Olympics). For the first time, US Paralympic athletes will receive the same medal bonus as their Olympian counterparts. Now Paralympians earn $37,500 for a gold medal, $22,500 for silver and $15,000 for bronze, increasing their payout by as much as 400 percent. 2. Around 4,400 athletes from 162 national Paralympic committees will compete in 539 medal events across 22 sports. The team from Afghanistan will not be in attendance after their flights were cancelled due to the unrest in their country. The country's flag still flew in the Opening Ceremonies as an "an act of solidarity." 3. Ten different impairments determine if an athlete is eligible to compete in the Paralympics: impaired muscle power, impaired passive range of movement, limb deficiency, leg length difference, short stature, muscle tension, uncoordinated movement, involuntary movements, vision impairment and intellectual impairment. You might see track and field stars like David Brown from the US, run alongside a guide while wearing an eye mask. The mask is to ensure that none have a visual advantage, like light perception. 4. Fans will not be allowed at the games due to COVID protocols, except for Tokyo's finest. More than 130,000 school children will be allowed to attend various events, even though many are too young to be vaccinated. According to the Associated Press, organizers say that it's good for the children to see athletes with disabilities competing at the highest level. It "could change attitudes in a relatively conservative society like Japan." 5. There are so many athletes to highlight, and we'll do so in our Instagram stories throughout the games, which end Sept. 5. A few to watch for are swimmer Jessica Long, who trains with Michael Phelps. She's the second most decorated Paralympian in US history and starred in her own Super Bowl commercial. Then there's sprinter Hunter Woodhall. You might know him from TikTok or from cheering on his long jumper girlfriend, Tara Davis, who competed in the Summer Olympics. PS: If you want to know more, the Paralympics' official Instagram account has posted some awesome educational posts alongside the coverage of the games. It's an excellent account to follow for all of the action and to learn a little bit along the way. We chat about the 2021 Olympic Games which were delayed by the pandemic. Was it worth the wait? How have the Aussies been faring so far?   Which was the best sporting moment so far? How good was the F bomb dropped by Kaylee McKeown after winning gold in the 200m backstroke? Also, how good was Dean Boxal's celebration after Ariarne Titmus won gold in the 200m freestyle final?   All that and more in this episode.   The 2020 Summer Olympics (Japanese: 2020年夏季オリンピック, Hepburn: Nisen Nijū-nen Kaki Orinpikku), officially the Games of the XXXII Olympiad (第三十二回オリンピック競技大会, Dai Sanjūni-kai Orinpikku Kyōgi Taikai) and branded as Tokyo 2020 (東京2020), is an international multi-sport event being held from 23 July to 8 August 2021 in Tokyo, Japan, with some preliminary events that began on 21 July.   Tokyo was selected as the host city during the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on 7 September 2013.[3] Originally scheduled to take place from 24 July to 9 August 2020, the event was postponed to 2021 in March 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the first such instance in the history of the Olympic Games (previous games had been cancelled but not rescheduled).[4] However, the event retains the Tokyo 2020 name for marketing and branding purposes.[5] It is being held largely behind closed doors with no public spectators permitted due to the declaration of a state of emergency.[b] The Summer Paralympics will be held between 24 August and 5 September 2021, 16 days after the completion of the Olympics.[6]   The 2020 Games are the fourth Olympic Games to be held in Japan, following the Tokyo 1964 (Summer), Sapporo 1972 (Winter), and Nagano 1998 (Winter) games.[c] Tokyo is the first city in Asia to hold the Summer Games twice. The 2020 Games are the second of three consecutive Olympics to be held in East Asia, following the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, and preceding the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China. The 2020 Games sees the introduction of new competitions as well as competitions that once were held but were subsequently removed. New ones include 3x3 basketball, freestyle BMX and mixed gender team events in a number of existing sports, as well as the return of madison cycling for men and an introduction of the same event for women. New IOC policies also allow the host organizing committee to add new sports to the Olympic program for just one Games. The disciplines added by the Japanese Olympic Committee are baseball and softball, karate, sport climbing, surfing, and skateboarding, the last four of which make their Olympic debuts.[7]   Bermuda and the Philippines won their first-ever Olympic gold medals.[8][9] San Marino and Turkmenistan won their first-ever Olympic medals.   We also do a little review on the 9th installment of the Fast and Furious Franchise, F9 (Spoiler alert)   FOR MORE   Instagram https://www.instagram.com/courtsideth... Most recently, Lauren was one of two winners who completed Channel 4's 'SAS: Who Dares Wins' programme this year.  Lauren has a Psychology degree, which was where she met Tammy Scobell who also joins us on this podcast. Tammy and Lauren are great friends who want to convert what they have learnt along their journeys into a brand to create change when it comes to mental health. Together, they created Sizu.  On the back of this podcast, Mantality and Sizu have now collaborated to make a tee where 100% of profits goes to ‘Young Minds' charity. The T-shirt is to address the positive development in the landscape of mental health and what we now deem to be strength in mind. The developments in how we approach mental health are excellent but there is still a long way to go and the conversation needs to keep progressing. With 100% of the profits going to the Young Minds charity we are ensuring that this concept of mental strength and toughness, can be a priority for the new generation going forward. As role models in sport, having competed in some of the toughest competitions, we hope we can show that on the other side of the courage to be vulnerable, can lie the ability to cultivate from adversity, resilience, growth and positive change.  We hope you can join us in this collaboration and spread the evolved version of what it is to be mentally tough. The former Nike Oregon Project athlete - Mary Cain - tells us she now feels "free" when she runs and how she has "discovered the love for it". Cain says her performances during the indoor season have added "fuel to the fire" as she seeks to improve and she believes the Olympics being postponed until 2021 could work in her favour. Cain describes her current coach - John Henwood - as an "amazing person, friend and confidant". Cain is now working with the Boston based company, Tracksmith, on a contract that sees her as a full time employee. She says that has helped ease her worries during the covid-19 pandemic as she's not left worrying about where her next paycheck will come from. Snooker player Mark King tells us if he wasn't able to attend Gamblers Anonymous meetings over Zoom he's "one thousand per cent" sure he would have had a bet during the covid-19 lockdown in the UK. He also tells us "95%" of tour players will be struggling financially as they haven't had any tournaments since March. King is due to play in the Championship League Snooker next week and says he couldn't contemplate getting a day job over the last few months as he has vulnerable family members and he didn't want to put them at risk. Cool Runnings comes to Peterborough - Shanwayne Stevens and Nimroy Turgott are two members of the Jamaican bobsleigh team and they're currently stuck in lockdown in Peterborough, in England. As they can't access training facilities they've had to come up with their own way of keeping fit ahead of the 2022 Winter Olympics. Their methods have drawn comparisons to the movie Cool Runnings, which was about the 1998 Jamaican bobsleigh team. One of their training exercises sees the two men push a car around an industrial estate. Stephens says they've had some funny looks and even offers to help fix the car, until they explain what they're actually doing. This week's Sporting Witness tells the remarkable story of Tofiri Kibuuka, who was the only African competitor at the first ever Winter Paralympics. Following those games in 1976 he was forced to flee his native Uganda by the regime of Idi Amin. Tofiri then took up Norwegian nationality and became a six time medallist in athletics at the Summer Paralympics. And - in the week that Australia's NRL returned, we speak to Justin Holbrook, who is the coach of the Gold Coast Titans. Rugby League returned in Australia, with no crowds in the stadium and artificial crowd noise played on television coverage of the matches. Photo Credit:

"When I was born the doctor wanted to kill me!", Ali Jawad.   Jawad, is a paralympic gold medalist and world record breaking powerlifter with Crohn's disease. He has had to overcome many challenges in life. His motto: "Why be the best when you can be the greatest?". Ali's competition personal best is 195kg but in the gym he has bench pressed over 200kg.   Ali Jawad, born as a double above the knee amputee, is a full time athlete, currently competing at 54kg in the qualifying rounds (final round end of April 2020) to participate in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.   Although, Ali is one of the highest performing powerlifters in the world he can be taken down by Crohn's disease at any time. Ali took up powerlifting at the age of 16. He competed in the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London, finishing fourth. The following year he took gold at the Asian Open Championships making a world record lift of 185.5 kg. He gained a world title at the 2014 World Championships in Dubai, won the European title and gold at the 2015 Americas Open Championships and at the 2016 Rio Games, Ali won silver and his first ever Paralympic medal for lifting 190kg. More recently he claimed silver at the Tokyo 2019 World Para Powerlifting World Cup at the Tokyo 2020 test event.   He is famous across social media for his celebratory competition dances, some of which have "gone viral". Revealed in this interview, a new dance is planned for Tokyo 2020.   Despite the pressure of living with Crohn's disease, performing as an elite athlete with high levels of pain and challenges to control that discomfort, Ali is an anti- doping advocate and educator sitting on the UK Athletes Anti Doping Commission Board. He is one of the highest profile commentators in the athlete movement to ban doping. This interview includes Ali's comments relating to the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) ruling on 9 December 2019 which bans Russia from competing at Tokyo 2020. ideaXme was the first organisation to catch Ali for his reaction to ruling.   WADA ruling: On 9 December, the World Anti-Doping Agency’s Executive Committee (ExCo) endorsed the recommendation made by the independent Compliance Review Committee (CRC) that the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) be declared non-compliant with the World Anti-Doping Code (Code) for a period of four years. Meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland, the 12-member ExCo supported the CRC’s recommendation, which includes a series of strong consequences and conditions of reinstatement in accordance with the International Standard for Code Compliance by Signatories (ISCCS).   The Chair of the CRC, Jonathan Taylor QC, took ExCo members through the CRC’s recommendation, which had been provided to ExCo members on 25 November together with the report of WADA Intelligence and Investigations (I&I) and that of the independent forensic experts from Lausanne University’s Institute of Forensic Science. “For too long, Russian doping has detracted from clean sport. The blatant breach by the Russian authorities of RUSADA’s reinstatement conditions, approved by the ExCo in September 2018, demanded a robust response. That is exactly what has been delivered today. Russia was afforded every opportunity to get its house in order and re-join the global anti-doping community for the good of its athletes and of the integrity of sport, but it chose instead to continue in its stance of deception and denial. As a result, the WADA ExCo has responded in the strongest possible terms, while protecting the rights of Russian athletes that can prove that they were not involved and did not benefit from these fraudulent acts". WADA   Since the interview, WADA received the resignation of Victoria Aggar, a highly respected member of its own Athlete Committee, who said she was standing down after WADA broke its promises and failed to protect clean athletes.   Demand for The Paralympics 2020: When it comes to tickets, next year’s Tokyo Paralympics will be just like the Olympics. International Paralympic President Andrew Parsons announced on Tuesday this week that there were 3.1 million tickets requested earlier this year in the first lottery phase. This exceeds the 2.3 million available. About 600,000 tickets were awarded in the first lottery, and another lottery is set for early next year.   Follow ideaXme's Tokyo 2020 playlist in the lead up to both the Olympics and Paralympics 2020. Think about something you really want to do but you’ve got an obstacle in the way. It could be a mental block, a fear; it could be a physical challenge.. maybe you don’t think you’re strong enough or have the endurance. A story that you might hear now and again is that of someone who wants to run a marathon and they’ve never run one before. 074 | An unprecedented act of kindness, a jump in cancer immunotherapy, and trusting your gut On this episode of Biotechnology Focus radio are some of the top stories this week: How an unprecedented act of kindness will transform lives Promising news out of Ottawa that could take cancer immunotherapy to the next level How a known anti-psychotic has the possibility of being a solution to ALS And how a researcher’s gut reaction turned out to be right. ++++++ Making headlines this week is about the staggering $100 million anonymous donation that was received by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) in Toronto to combat the causes of mental illness and develop cures to save lives and further hope. This anonymous gift leaves many incredulous and excited to fuel discovery and create social change for all Canadians. The donor made a comment on how they had seen first-hand the impact mental illness has on individuals and their families, and that they just wanted to support the next generation of researchers so that they can transform care. This investment has presented CAMH the opportunity to create the Discovery Fund, aimed to transform the lives of those touched by mental illness. The fund will attract talent, explore innovative ideas, support young scientists and leverage data to pick the brain and uncover how the pieces fit together. Dr. Catherine Zahn, the president and CEO of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health said that “Complex problems need complex solutions. We need to invest in the fundamental research and the clinical innovation that will improve the health of individuals and populations, locally, nationally and globally. This gift will make that a reality.” +++++ The Ottawa Hospital and the University of Ottawa have released a promising study. It suggests that combinations of two immunotherapies – oncolytic viruses and checkpoint inhibitors – could be more successful as treatments for combating triple-negative breast cancer than traditional methods. The study was published in Science Translational Medicine using mice models by Dr. Marie-Claude Bourgeois-Daigneault, lead-author of the study and postdoctoral fellow, and Dr. John Bell, a grantee from the Alliance of Cancer Gene Therapy (ACGT), professor at the University of Ottawa and senior scientist at the Ottawa Hospital. Cancer immunotherapy has become a prominent tool in the treatment of cancer, especially melanoma and leukemia, but has not had such a strong effect on solid tumour cancers. The researchers studied three mouse models of triple negative breast cancer and found that all were resistant to a checkpoint inhibitor which is commonly used to treat other kinds of cancer. They also found that while an oncolytic virus called Maraba could replicate inside these cancers and help the mouse’s immune system recognize and attack the cancer, the virus alone had minimal impact on overall survival. The researchers decided to up the ante and put both the oncolytic and checkpoint inhibitor in unison to determine if the results would change in models that mimicked metastatic breast cancer. They found that this combination cured 60 to 90 per cent of the mice, compared to zero for the checkpoint inhibitor alone and 20 to 30 per cent for the virus alone. In these models, the virus was given previous to the surgery and the checkpoint inhibitor was given afterward. There are other ongoing clinical trials that are testing oncolytic viruses, such as Maraba, in aggregation with checkpoint inhibitors in people with cancer, as well as expanding the use of oncolytic viruses to fight other infectious diseases, such as HIV. These results could be a breakthrough and make this an incredibly exciting find. +++++ Most people are familiar with the Ice Bucket Challenge that went viral a couple years ago to raise awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or more familiarly known as ALS. It topped the charts with over $17 million participants that raised a substantial amount of money for the cause. So where did these raised funds go? Well, some of that capital has been invested into a research study at the University of Calgary to investigate a potential pre-established drug for use as a treatment for ALS. Dr. Lawrence Korngut, associate professor at the Cumming School of Medicine and a member of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute, is spearheading a clinical trial associated with nine hospital centres around Canada to determine if a well-known anti-psychotic drug could be repurposed to either cure or treat symptoms of ALS. Studies from researchers in Montreal indicated that the use of pimozide to stabilize mobility was receptive in animal models who were born with the equivalent of human ALS. They discovered that the drug had a particular knack for preventing paralysis in fish with a genetic form of ALS by preserving the neuromuscular function – which can be related to the disease in humans. After only six weeks, the research team started to see results of the drug’s effectiveness. One of the first more typical signs of ALS – which is the loss of control of the thenar muscles – maintained normal functioning. However, it is not known yet if pimozide can be repurposed for this disease. More studies will be necessary to determine if this will only have a stabilizing effect, or if it is curative. It appears as if things are looking up for ALS patients as more clinical trials are introduced, but there is still no definitive cure for the disease. More ALS patients are needed for these studies. Any who are interested in participating please contact pimozide2@ucalgary.ca. +++++ Many people around the world rely on catheters every day to empty their bladder – especially people with spinal cord injuries. After a well-respected publication concluded that catheters could be reused without an increased risk of infection, a professor and researcher from the University of British Columbia began to question. Dr. Andrei Krassioukov, a professor of medicine at UBC and chair of rehabilitation research with International Collaboration On Repair Discoveries (ICORD), who works closely with groups such as the American Paraplegic Society, and the Canadian Association of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, just this past summer spoke to a few of the wheelchair athletes that participated in the Summer Paralympics in London about the single-use versus multiple-use issues on catheters. A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection in any part of your urinary system — your kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. Most infections involve the lower urinary tract — the bladder and the urethra. It can be an extremely painful and incapacitating infection. Antibiotics like amoxicillin, are used to heal the infection and soothe the symptoms. Sexually active women and patients that use catheters, like spinal cord injury patients are at higher risk. It has been a debate amongst the medical community of whether or not to reuse catheters. The instrument can cost anywhere from $5 to $30, and for people with spinal cord injuries that require a new one every time they release their bladder, it begins to add up. Around the world, and even within Canada, there are price and coverage differences for the individual. In France, it is illegal to reuse catheters; and in other countries, they simply can not afford the healthcare costs of single-use. Cochrane Canada, a non-profit, non-governmental organization formed to organize medical research findings to facilitate evidence-based choices about health inventions, reviewed evidence from 31 clinical trials of single vs. multi-use catheters and urinary tract infections in 2014. Their statement is that there was no convincing evidence that the incidence of infection was linked by catheterization. From Krassioukov’s clinical experience and study conducted at the Paralympics he instinctively knew that these results were false. He assembled a team of experts from around the world to re-examine the evidence. Due to the sufficiency of the errors they found in the previous concluding evidence, Cochrane has since withdrawn their conclusion. While there have been new developments on how to make catheters sterile and ready for multi-use, they have yet to be fully confident that it will not reimpose infection. +++++ Well that wraps up another episode of Biotechnology Focus Radio. Chris Waddell, world-class athlete and founder of One Revolution, is turning perceptions of disability upside-down. Chris was a competitive skier in college when he broke his back, rising to become the most decorated mono-skier in men’s Paralympic history. He launched One Revolution to redefine disability. More about Chris: Chris Waddell always thought that the lessons he learned in sports would provide the foundation for later success. As a ski racer at Middlebury College in 1988, he had no idea how profoundly one moment could change and paradoxically enhance that conviction. On December 20th his ski popped off in the middle of a turn. He fell, broke two vertebrae, and damaged the spinal cord. Paralyzed from the waist down he learned and achieved more than he could have imagined. He returned to college just two months after the accident, started monoskiing in less than a year and was named to the US Disabled Ski Team a little more than two years after that paradoxical moment. With 12 Paralympic medals, he became the most decorated male monoskier in history. Also a track athlete, he’s one of a handful to have won World Championships in both the winter and the summer. He competed in four Winter Paralympics winning 12 medals and three Summer Paralympics winning a silver medal in the 200 meters in Sydney. In World Championship competition, Waddell won 9 total medals: four gold, one silver, one bronze; six in the winter and three in the summer. Waddell was inducted into the US Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame and the Paralympics Hall of Fame. The Dalai Lama honored him as an “Unsung Hero of Compassion”. People Magazine named him one of the “Fifty Most Beautiful People in the World.” Skiing Magazine placed him amongst the “25 Greatest Skiers in North America.” Middlebury College presented him with a Doctorate in Humane Letters. In September of 2009 Waddell became the first paraplegic to summit Mt. Kilimanjaro almost entirely under his own power. His team carried him for approximately 100 feet of the 19,340 mountain. The film documenting the climb has won awards throughout the world. He has appeared on Dateline, Oprah and 20/20. He is the founder of the One Revolution Foundation and speaks throughout the country sharing his universal message, “It’s not what happens to you. It’s what you do with what happens to you.” Currently Waddell resides in Park City, Utah where he can be seen out and about keeping fit on his hand cycle and racer. He travels the country year round presenting the Foundation’s Nametags school program, speaking to corporate groups and screening the documentary. Waddell is working on a book to chronicle his journey while also planning his newest adventure – a cross country bike tour to highlight the foundation. He also continues to be actively involved with the Paralympics as an ambassador for the International Paralympic Committee and is a color analyst for the Games.
