Episode Notes In what might be their last hurrah for a while, our heroes present a rogues gallery to send them off. This week they have Bob Dylan, Nosferatu, and what could be described as what you might get if Bob Dylan and Nosferatu were to somehow reproduce: Marilyn Manson. First up it's mustachioed, undead bloodsucker, Count Orlok, a.k.a. Nosferatu. Will Robert Eggers horror epic give Lorraine and Will the fear? Can Will get past Orlok's clumsy ultimatum? Next is tiresome shock-merchant, Marilyn Manson, who has been up to what can only be described as fairly unsurprising behaviour. Channel 4's 3-piece documentary boils our heroes blood to the point where Count Orlok himself would burn his tongue on it! Finally, Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown rounds off this trio. Can Timothee Chalamet pull off the job of inhabiting the most cantankerous and obtuse musicians of all time? This may be our last show for a while. We've had a great time doing it and we hope to be back at some point. Thanks to NEAR FM.ie for having us, and as Dylan himself said "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue". In the 123rd Irish edition of IndieRE, hosted by Patrick Domanico from Near FM, the spotlight shines on a diverse array of Irish musical talent, showcasing everything from indie-folk and post-punk to electro-pop and noise-punk. The show features a lineup that includes Winter Aid, led by Shane Culloty, who presents his latest ventures into heartbreak-folk, influenced by his time in California. Welchen Spielraum haben alternative Künstler:innen in der heutigen digitalen Musikindustrie? Mit solchen und weiteren Fragen werden sich verschiedene Freie Radios aus Europa in Ihrem Musikmagazin beschäftigen. ## IndieRE #101 by Radio Študent, Ljubljana Sedeminpetdeseta oddaja iz nove serije IndieRE 2.0. V seriji IndieRE v produkciji in mednarodni izmenjavi radijske vsebine sodelujemo ljubljanski Radio Študent, hrvaški Radio Student, francoska mreža Radio Campus, Radio Corax iz Halleja v Nemčiji, EMA-RTV iz Španije, irski Near FM, madžarski Civil Rádió in avstrijski Radio Helsinki. Welcome to the 101st edition of the IndieRE radio show prepared by Radio Študent in Ljubljana, Slovenia. We're starting off with a contemporary folk and etno inspired trio Ingver in Gverilke, who released their song Sestra or Sister. The song calls for solidarity of the oppressed and between the oppressed in current times with an emphasis on anti-patriarchal stance. We'll be staying in the realm of folk and indie atmospheres with 3:rma, a duo of Urška Supej and Maša But, who will join us in a short conversation. Their work is inspired by American folk music and focused on poetry and storytelling. At the end of December they've released their second EP titled The Garden of Edna inspired by the American feminist poet Edna st. Vincent Millay. Next we'll listen to new music from the academic jazz musician, composer and saxophonist Boštjan Simon, who's been active in many bands and projects. Fermented Reality is his newest work, his first solo album released on Nature Scene Records in February. Moving on to more jazz and r'n'b we'll be listening to Magic Pond's music from their second EP Drama at the Lake from June last year and talk about their music with the lead vocalist Klara Veteršek. Electronic producer Grega Kalinski or Douchean made some fresh breakbeat, electro, bass, atmospheric dance music packed up in an EP Aphrodisiac released on De/fragment. It consists of five long, detailed and impactful tunes and is one of the best electronic productions so far this year. Staying in the lane we'll feature Age of Revolt, a new EP Fake Everything by the producer and DJ Jakob Bekš, who's been active under several names in the Ljubljana's electronic music scene since the 2010s' and runs the label Honest Work Recordings. We'll conclude the show with something very special and specific – live coding of music. It's a method of producing and modifying sound live with code in a programme built with samples, sounds etc. The movement is called toplap and the music ranges from ambiental to noise and rave, called algorave or algorithm rave. One of the prominent musicians in this field is Luka Prinčič who performed live coding at the New Music Forum in Cankarjev dom in November 2023 and has released the recording under the title algoforte05live in January this year. 1. Ingver in Gverilke – Sestra [4:15] (single, self-released, 2023) 2. 3:rma – Consensual Longing [6:58] (The Garden of Edna, self-released, 2024) 3. Boštjan Simon – Sustain Release [3:05] (Fermented Reality, Nature Scene Records, 2024) 4. Magic Pond – April Snow [3:35] (Drama at the Lake, self-released, 2023) 5. Douchean – Fly With You [8:27] (Aphrodisiac, De/fragment, 2024) 6. Age of Revolt – Fake Jobs [5:15] (Fake Everything, Tehnopolis, 2024) 7. Episode Notes Our heroes return for a triumphant second episode on Near FM (90.3FM/nearfm.ie) secure in the knowledge that last weeks episode was a huge hit or nobody with the power to cancel the show was listening. Either way, episode two is 'GO!' This week, the team tackle Netflix psychodrama, Baby Reindeer, which proves to be an uncomfortable topic given the fact that Will sends dozens of texts and emails to Lorraine every day. It's mostly just him moaning about stuff, but still... After that it is onto an unlikely choice from our daring duo with Beyonce's 8th studio album, Cowboy Carter. If you want to hear two grown adults whining about having to sit through 27 songs over 80 minutes, you have come to the right place. Apart from the regional jazz scene, they look at current releases from artists such as toechter, a band that introduces string instruments into pop music. As always, there is one song picked for our special category »fesch«, a song in German language that is not yet mainstream but quite famous. The 107th Irish edition of IndieRe promises to be a special episode, featuring a lineup of new releases and interviews with emerging talents from the Irish music scene. Hosted by Patrick Domanico, the show kicks off with Larks, a music project released by Fiona O'Kane, a gifted multi-instrumentalist hailing from Belfast. Following O'Kane's segment is the first interview of the episode with Tommy Cullen, who introduces his solo album "Enjoy the Glow". Continuing the showcase, HousePlants, a duo comprising Bell X1's frontman Paul Noonan and renowned producer Daithí, presents their track "No Pushover." According to Noonan's interview with Hot Press, Paul says: "'No Pushover, lyrically, is the tale of an outsider, a wannabe insider. I was taken with a story about how Elon Musk and his brother like to talk about The Simulation Argument (that we're all in a simulation) in the hot tub, and thought – is this the ultimate inner sanctum??”. It is suggested to listen to this song pumping-up the volume of your speakers. Enjoy the second interview of this episode with the rock band Dominda (pronounced doh-mind-dah) offering insights into the origins of their band name. Dominda comprises Ruaidhrí Whelan, Stephen Curtis, Luke Cunningham, Sean Curtis, and Barry Lysaght, promising a diverse and dynamic sound. Wrapping up the show is the Dance/Electronic music project Disfreq, hailing directly from Moville, Co. Donegal, Ireland. Their track "This Is Just A Dream" serves as the perfect conclusion to the episode's eclectic lineup. The musical journey begins with Pillow Queens, an Irish indie rock band from Dublin, formed in 2016. Same city of an emerging artist, Rudy, a.k.a. Rudy Anna Kelly. We are going to the marginalized areas in Northern Ireland where Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap, and DJ Próvaí created the music project Kneecap that combines Irish and English, satire and socially conscious lyrics, and reality and absurdity. Next up is the spirited quartet Problem Patterns, proudly identified as four shouty queers crafting songs that encapsulate the current moment. Alanah, Bethany, Bev, and Ciara, formed the band in 2018, introducing a genre they coined as PUNK—a blend of shouty, heavy, tongue-in-cheek, inclusive, hopeful, and fun elements. Our musical journey takes us to Cork, Spain, and West London, guided by the versatile Jessica Smyth, known as Biig Piig. An artist fluent in both English and Spanish, Biig Piig has lived in Ireland, Spain, and the UK. Switching gears, we delve into the political realm with Captain Moonlight's poignant song, I Want To Fight The Taoiseach, addressing the Irish Prime Minister. Returning to Cork, we explore the rock fusion sounds of City Weezle, a band founded in Paris by Irishman Simon Fleury. Their demos, City Weezle (2006) and The Leprechaun (2008), mark their prominence in the French/Irish/European underground fusion scene. This episode showcases the incredible diversity and influence of Ireland's independent music sector, offering a rich tapestry of creative output. 1. Pillow Queens – Suffer 2. Rudy – Lily pad 3. Ula and Jan from Radio Študent, Ljubljana, Slovenia, will take you through the sounds of SsmKOSK's glitchcore and flamenco, following by a new compilation from ŠOP Records, an underground Slovenian label that releases experimental, weird, lo-fi, funny, critical and noisy soundscapes. We'll speak with Tit Podobnik, the label's main man about celebrating the label's 10-year anniversary this year and the new released music from 35 various artists titled Slounds From Slovenian Bedrooms V. Next up we'll have Boštjan Franetič, a jazz guitar player who recently formed a new quartet and has released an album called Siciljanka or Lady of Sicily and who'll be joining us in the studio for a brief interview. We'll also listen to a fresh collab, a bridge between generations, between Eva Jakimoska or Moska, a young producer and DJ, and SunnySun, an oldschool and more established producer. They have released an EP called Milka with three mixes of electronic breaks, ghetto house and electro. Continuing with electronic dance sounds, but a bit deeper, we'll listen to darker shades of spacey techno by producer Zergon, who released a new EP called Nusent. Smedja and Smetke will be next, a one-man project by Matic Medja, one of the hottest power violence artists on Ljubljana's music scene at the moment. He recently released a new album Smetobolje. We'll conclude the broadcast with an in-house release, a various artists compilation Klubski maraton 2023, a collection of works from six upcoming artists and bands that we picked as a part of the Klubski maraton tour of 2023. This is a 23-year ongoing project that highlights new music constellations and names in the Slovenian independent alternative music scene. The artists record the songs in our studios at Radio Študent, our record label Zarš releases the compilation, and we organise a tour through Slovenia's youth centres and clubs where the musicians get an idea how a musician's work looks and can get comfortable with performing on stage more, explore their sound and so on. We also organize a final concert in Ljubljana where all six chosen bands perform together and conclude the marathon so to speak. 1. SsmKOSK – sanje, izgubljene v krvi in transferjih [4:52] (610a: notranji petki, Zvočni prepihi, 2023) 2. balans – perspektiva [5:03] (Sounds From Slovenian Bedrooms V, ŠOP Records, 2023) 3. trinajst – Capable of action, prone to inertia [4:00] (Sounds From Slovenian Bedrooms V, ŠOP Records, 2023) 4. Mellow sounds with gloomy overtones, blurring the frontier between the organic and the synthetic. This is how you could describe a certain slice of Paris' contemporary musical underground, spearheaded by DIY producers and leftfield labels alike. This episode of IndieRE, produced by Radio Campus Paris in collaboration with Planisphère, shines light where darkness lingers, namely in the music of Morfine, Didem Coskunseven and the duo Omer. Morfine is one of the aliases of Estelle Morfin. Combining activities as an artist, radio host, DJ, label founder and journalist, she has released two EPs under the name Roman Delore, as well as the album Blinding Nights as Morfine. Didem Coskunseven is a composer, sound designer and musician from Istanbul who studied composition at the University of California in Berkeley. Now based in Paris, she studies composition and computer music at Ircam while creating works as influenced by modal jazz than by contemporary ambient music. Omer is the duo of Tristan Hamelin Foulon and Jason Bancilhon. On their first album Polyphon, they translate bird song into a score, put a piano through autotune and experiment with musical traditions ranging from Erik Satie to German industrial pioneers Einstürzende Neubauten. Created in 2018 with the goal of bringing into the spotlight up-and-coming artists of the experimental music scene, Planisphère organises underground events and releases albums and EPs by new and inventive artists. While experimentation is a guiding principle in sound as well as image, their aesthetic spectrum is deliberately large. Abrasive techno sits alongside intimate folk, ambient and noise neighbour jazz and space rock. 1. Morfine – Shapes 2. Morfine – Dark Stars 3. Morfine – Credo 4. Didem Coskunseven – Ext.thewoods.night (interpreted by Ensemble Nikel) 5. Omer – Pièce pour Automate 6. Omer – Les danseuses 7. Speaking of Berlin – the center of all different kinds of music and arts –, we'll have a look at the independent music label Staatsakt that celebrates its 20th birthday! The jubilee comes not only with a new album by the label founding band Die Türen (German for The Doors!) but also with a book release that gives an insight in the relationships between artists and label and so much more. The show closes with our special category Fesch that will be served by, again, Berlin based artist Charlotte Brandi and a song of her latest – only female produced! – album An den Alptraum. 1. Lafff Box – Just a Fool 2. St.upid – Lying faces 3. Two Boys – Rubber lover 4. Two Boys – Dubai 5. Das Behälter – Back to normal 6. Yelka – Brasilia 7. Yfory – Chwaer Pwy? 8. Smile – Protection 9. Die Türen – Grunewald is Burning 10. Das Kinn – 1-2 Eisberg 11. Ostseetraum – Wut 12. Ostseetraum – Leer 13. Charlotte Brandi – Der Ekel * Produced by Radio Corax, Halle (Salle). * Prepared, produced, mixed and announced by Lena Ulrich. * Design by Jure Anžiček. # IndieRE - Independent Radio Exchange Was macht die lokale Musikszene Sevillas aus? In February RUNAH released indie dance single Same Face which was play-listed in New Music Friday UK along with the likes of Billie Eilish and Sam Smith. It was also selected for the Breath of Fresh Eire and Hands in the Eire editorial playlists, the latter of which used RUNAH's image for the playlist cover! In 2019 RUNAH released her debut album STRANGE, which has earned over 600,000 streams in just a few months, and selected for a number of high profile Spotify Editorial Playlists. SOCIAL FABRIC 2018 – A Thank You Note When I started this journey, I had an idea for a project that would help young adult to rediscover the art of conversation. Growing up in Italy, we sat at the table everyday as a family And in Italy the family includes uncles, aunties, grannies, granddads, neighbours and anyone that happen to be passing by when the dinner was served. At the time it didn’t really seem to be that important, but as I spent 50 on this earth, I realised that the conversations, nuggets of information, jokes, laughter and that very important inter -generational crossover made a positive impact to my life. Listening to my favourite uncle talking about the good old days or my granny reminiscing about the War or even having a very animated conversation with my sisters about my favourite band, was all part of what made me. Looking at my teenage children, looking at the importance screen time – be it phone, tablet, tv or playstation – and the lack of conversational skills – or indeed the lack of interest in conversation, saddened me and genuinely worried me. The peer to peer conversation over Instagram, snapchat or whatever the next big thing is going to be, seemed to fall short of what I believe to be necessary and healthy for them. Over a glass of wine and lovely conversation with a couple of friends from Brazil, I mentioned that that I was worried about the very fabric of our society and the tears that started to appear. Social Fabric, the name, was born. When a friend of mine, Graham Bushe, completely the incredible feat of running the Wicklow Way race, 127 km, only to turn around and run back, I thought it would be a good idea to sit down with him and ask him how and why. I contacted the Outsider Magazine and asked them if they’d be interested in an article about Graham. They kindly agreed to the idea and off I went to meet with Graham. I brought my phone along, sat it between us on the table and asked him a few questions, I thought I’d record the chat in case I missed anything for when I was going to write the story. What developed was the idea of the podcast. I thought that perhaps someone out there would like to know about an ordinary people doing extraordinary things. The article was published, Graham got nominated for an Outsider Magazine award and I thought “why stop here, there are so many amazing people around and I want to know more about them and hopefully my kids will listen to their stories and get inspired” In the meatime, I decided to do a radio course in Near FM, in Coolock, Dublin. The course was brilliant and gave me a great taste for the radio, the studio, the recording systems and once I completed the course I put together a proposal for a weekly show. Social Fabric, the podcast was born. Loosely based on the fabulous Desert Island discs, in that the guests get to pick 7 songs that are meaningful to them, I decided to focus on Passion and community involvement. 9 months and 37 episodes later I have had the privilege to meet with a fantastic group of people whose lives, work, passion and drive could not have been more diverse. I learned so much from each one of them. From Graham Bushe – how mind over matter can make you achieve impossible things From Paul Byrne how and why he set up a website – greystonesguide.ie that has become the go to place for anyone in the town From Eamon O’Connor of LuckyBones, what it means to be a passionate musician and how to make a living out of it. A special thanks to Eamon for allowing me to use his songs for the intro of the podcast, Alice will be played in full at the end of this. From Pol O’Conghaile –how to combine the love for writing and travelling to become a multi award winning travel writer. From Patrik Albertsson – how to follow your passion and reinvent yourself from Policeman to Massage Therapist From Mark Davidson – how to use your passion for books to introduce children to the art of writing From Ju Ju Jay – How to overcome addiction to become a...
