The films of Robert Kramer blend fiction and documentary modes to engage with, and expand on, traditions of militant political cinema and subjective essay filmmaking. A founding member of the New Left activist film collective Newsreel in 1967, Kramer devoted himself to the group's radical ethos, but he also began to make his own hermetic and probing fiction films—like The Edge (1967) and Ice (1969)—which turned the camera back onto the mostly white middle-class milieu of his comrades, posing thorny questions about the nature of political commitment. This process reached its peak with the sprawling, 3-hour plus Milestones (1975, co-directed with John Douglas), a vast mosaic featuring a cast of over 50 fellow travelers, union organizers, dropouts, Free Vermont commune dwellers, and more, all navigating the demands of their personal and political lives in the wake of the Vietnam War. At the end of '70s, Kramer decamped to France, where his films had been championed by critics like Serge Daney, and proceeded to work in a wide variety of contexts across Europe and beyond, making films like Guns (1980), Our Nazi (1984), Doc's Kingdom (1988), Route One/USA (1989), and Walk the Walk (1996). Over the past several years, the French DVD company Re:Voir has been beautifully restoring and re-releasing his films, and Kramer, who passed away suddenly in 1999, is currently the subject of a major retrospective at the Viennale, running through the end of November. The retrospective is accompanied by a new book, Starting Places, published by the Austrian Film Museum, which reproduces a 1997 interview with Kramer by the French critic Bernard Eisenchitz alongside several essays written by Kramer himself. To mark the occasion, Film Comment's Clinton Krute and Michael Blair invited Erika Balsom and Benjamin Crais, two noted critics who each proudly own original Milestones posters, to discuss Kramer's life and work. A few short audio clips of Kramer talking about his films, sourced from the original 1997 interview tapes, are interspersed throughout the conversation, providing their own points of departure into this undersung filmmaker's richly heterogenous, and endlessly fascinating, body of work. Special thanks to Volker Pantenburg. Let's dive into a topic that affects all of us - how cellphones, social media, and AI are fundamentally reshaping the way we consume news and engage in politics.Jack Brewster is the Founder and CEO of Newsreel, an app designed to make news more accessible for young people and those that are digitally exhausted. As a Fullbright scholar in Germany, he researched how young people consume news and how journalism can adapt to these changing behaviors. Melbourne's Medically Supervised Injecting Room (MSIR) in North Richmond opened in 2018. This was the result of a years-long grassroots campaign led by the local community, fed up with constant overdoses in the streets. The MSIR operates on principles of harm reduction which simply work and urgently need to be applied throughout the world. The stigma around drug use, and the criminalising of drug users, must end - and that begins with us. In 1955, Frank Sinatra made a historically significant contribution to the destigmatisation of drug use on film in Otto Preminger's The Man with the Golden Arm. In a depiction that is in many ways still radical today, Sinatra's character of Frankie Machine is a regular person who is trying his best to shake off a heroin addiction but is simply failed by a society that does not have the means to support him. A compelling and empathetic performance by Sinatra, and subject matter which openly defied the Production Code of its era, made this a memorable classic for many and contributed to a better world. This week on SUDDENLY, friend of the show Spike Vincent joins us to watch The Man With the Golden Arm, sharing his thoughts and personal experiences. Meanwhile, Rabia has been reading up on the MSIR and reports back on the experience of touring the facility to see what goes on first-hand. As a thematic wild card, we also watched an Australian DVD of the film called A Night at the Cinema with extra footage intended to replicate the experience of seeing this film in 1955 in a cinema in specifically Castlemaine, Victoria - including "God Save the Queen", a newsreel, cartoon, local ads etc - which leads us to compelling footage of the 1955 Maitland floods. Plus, an update on Bobby Long. How to integrate AI into everything that we do, how do we use AI to really jump to the next level “One of the things I want to do at the session is motivate the Alliance members to think about how to integrate AI into everything that we do, how do we use AI to really jump to the next level, and how we can continue to be competitive, how we offer new capabilities and services to our customers, which is something that the alliance has been all about since the beginning,” says Michael Tessler, Managing Partner at True North Advisory. Michael Tessler Co-founded and was the former CEO of BroadSoft, a global leader in Cloud Communications. His experiences and insights include the things that created the cloud communications industry as we know it. At the upcoming Cloud Connections 2024 event, Michael will be unpacking AI, but with a different angle than many people might have heard before. “I've been doing work with some large enterprises trying to understand how to diffuse the AI capabilities, how those capabilities might enable our service providers to create new capabilities for our clients, for end users, how to have them engage with their end users,” adds Michael. In this short reel, we learn about how Michael is looking at AI and the next frontier of new opportunities for the cloud community. In 1989, New York City declared itself a sanctuary city — a place where undocumented immigrants seeking asylum are safe from immediate deportation and eligible to receive city services. But living up to that promise is tougher than just passing a law. This year, New York City has received over 100,000 asylum seekers so far, including 15,000 unaccompanied minors. Most are from Latin America, where they face extortion from gangs, robbery, rape and LGBTQ+ persecution. The journey to the U.S. is deadly, but so is life back home. They set out by bus, train, and on foot through forests and the Rio Grande, often with babies and toddlers, to come to the U.S. In this episode of The Laura Flanders Show, produced in collaboration with the School of Labor and Urban Studies at the City University of New York (CUNY), hear the harrowing journeys and hopes of refugees coming to New York City — and the issues they face soon after they arrive — including trouble finding work, shelter, foster care placement, and legal battles. New York City is conflicted about their arrival, politicians say there are too many migrants, and far-Right extremists create a hostile and oftentimes dangerous environment. Stepping in is a growing network of volunteers and nonprofits comprised of social workers and lawyers on the ground and in the courts, who are working to give asylum seekers a welcome, shelter, and legal protection. New York City as we know it would cease to exist without migrants. Here are their stories.[Translated from Spanish] “A lot of the gay people in Guatemala or Central America, they get murdered. They either get killed or they hide their homosexuality by pretending to be someone else. If they do that, they don't get hurt, but if they dress like women, or if they present in a feminine way, they get attacked.” - Eswin “We work with young people who have been raped, who have been tortured, who have been kidnapped — many times on the way from their country to the United States — who've been abandoned, who've been starved. They are coming with the continued desire to thrive in this country despite the trauma that they've endured.” - Angela Fernández“Unaccompanied minors and immigrant children who are working are particularly vulnerable . . . They don't speak the language, they may not know their rights. They may not know what kinds of agencies to go to or where they can get help.” - Terri Gerstein“The people that we're getting are all working-class families. They're decent people . . . We should welcome everybody. We need the help.” - Father James Kelly“The first thing that [migrants] ask is not water, food, it's where can I find work. They don't want handouts. They want to be able to provide for themselves.” - Power Malu[Translated from Spanish] “. . . [Organized crime] began extorting people . . . Where I used to live, they killed a 13-year-old boy and a couple. I left my town of Tulcán. From there to Colombia. And from Colombia, we went through the jungle.” - Lady Mansilla“It's the volunteers that are on the ground receiving people in a respectful and human-centered way, and then they're coordinating access to services for them on a case-by-case basis.” - Jamie Powlovich“Going to foster care is an option that's deemed better for a child because they have the opportunity to live a life that's almost normal because you can go to school, you can have friends, you can go out, which they cannot do in detention. There aren't enough spots in foster care for immigrant children right now.” - Marie-Cassandre WavreGuests:Eswin: Asylum Seeker, EcuadorAngela Fernández: Executive Director, Safe Passage ProjectTerri Gerstein: Harvard Center for Labor & A Just EconomyFather James Kelly: Immigration Attorney, District 3 Immigration ServicesPower Malu: Founder, Artists Athletes ActivistsLady Mansilla: Asylum Seeker, EcuadorJamie Powlovich: Executive Director, Coalition for Homeless YouthMarie-Cassandre Wavre: Supervising Attorney, The Door Full Episode Notes are located HERE. Bill Stern's Colgate Newsreel first took to the air on December 5th, 1937 over NBC's Blue network. Born on July 1st, 1907, Stern began in vaudeville and by 1931, he was the assistant stage manager at the Roxy Theater and later Radio City in New York. In 1934 he got the role of broadcaster for NBC's Friday Night Fights. He became one of the most famous sportscasters in the country. Four years later he partnered with MGM for their News Of The Day reel. Stern's career flourished despite a 1935 car accident, which injured him severely enough that his left leg had to be amputated just above the knee. By March 17th, 1944, his colgate program was running over NBC on Fridays at 10:30PM eastern. Constance Bennett was the guest on this broadcast. After nearly sixteen years with NBC, Stern switched to ABC for three final seasons. While at ABC Stern was a regular panelist on the game show The Name's the Same.

Synopsis In the summer of 1972, five burglars broke into the offices of the Democratic National Committee at the Watergate office complex in Washington, DC, and soon the term “Watergate” came to signify a political scandal that nearly led to the impeachment of then-president Richard Nixon. But if you had said, “Watergate” to someone in D.C. in July some 30 years earlier, you probably were referring to a series of outdoor concerts by the National Symphony Orchestra, whose “Watergate Concerts” were held on the banks of the Potomac near the Lincoln Memorial. These concerts presented a mix of old and new music, classical favorites and recently composed works by American composers. For example, on today's date in 1945, the weather in DC was clear and warm when Alexander Smallens conducted an outdoor Watergate Concert that included the recently-composed suite from Aaron Copland's ballet “Rodeo,” and “Newsreel,” an orchestral suite by William Schuman. Schuman's suite was inspired by the popular newsreel features shown at movie theaters in those days – a time when radio ruled, and if people wanted to SEE footage of faces and places in the news, they had to turn to the movies, not CNN or the internet. Music Played in Today's Program Aaron Copland (1900-1990) – Rodeo (London Symphony; Aaron Copland, cond.) Sony Classical 60593 William Schuman (1910-1992) – Newsreel (Milwaukee Symphony; Lukas Foss, cond.) Pro Arte 102
