“I've seen some horrendous accidents and things – never in my life had I seen anything similar to this.” Chief Kim Zaragis describes the scene of the Oklahoma City bombing – a terrorist attack that killed 168 people and injured more than 600 others on April 19, 1995. As we mark 30 years since the horrific incident, Chief Zagaris recounts his 16 days working the scene as the planning section chief – a role he was tasked with due to his extensive experience in USAR responses, emergency management and homeland security. Zagaris, who currently serves as the Wildfire Policy and Technology Advisor for the Western Fire Chiefs Association, highlights the challenges faced at the scene, coordination with the FBI, the highly personal dedication of the first responders during recovery efforts, and the importance of humility when providing mutual aid, among other key takeaways from the incident. The Trump-Vance transition team and the Biden administration signed a memorandum of understanding last week formally kicking off the process to hand over executive power — though the Trump team has decided not to accept some of the government's available resources, including tech and information security provided by the General Services Administration. The transition team will reportedly run as a “self-sufficient organization” with existing security and information protections already built-in, utilizing private funding, according to the press release from the Trump transition team. That includes not using technology or buildings provided by the General Services Administration as part of the transition resources the agency is authorized and appropriated to provide. The Trump team said it “already has existing security and information protections built in, which means we will not require additional government and bureaucratic oversight.” The Department of Justice's Office of the Inspector General called out the agency's lack of an updated public strategy for artificial intelligence and underscored the need to be proactive in a report on its management and performance challenges last week. The comments came as part of the OIG's determination that maintaining cybersecurity and keeping up with emerging technologies, such as AI, were among the top challenges for the DOJ. For AI specifically, the report underscored how long ago the department's public AI strategy was released. The OIG's office said in the report: “While the Department has made efforts to adapt to the change in the technological landscape, such as hiring the Department's first Chief Science and Technology Advisor and Chief AI Officer, the most recent publicly issued strategy on AI from the Department—which outlines an AI adoption and coordination strategy with DOJ component responsibilities—is from 2020.” The Daily Scoop Podcast is available every Monday-Friday afternoon. Although mergers and acquisitions (M&As) are strategic moves that can propel companies toward greater market share, enhanced capabilities, and increased innovation, one critical aspect often overlooked is cybersecurity. Ensuring robust cybersecurity during the M&A process is paramount, as it safeguards the integrity of both companies involved, protects sensitive data, and mitigates potential risks that could derail the transaction or devalue the acquisition. In this podcast episode, Greg Crowley, Chief Information Security Officer at eSentire, discusses the role of cybersecurity in M&As with Ron Park, Operating Partner & Technology Advisor to PE firms, and Dwayne Smith, SVP, Security and Global CISO of PrismHR. Together, Ron, Dwayne, and Greg discuss the importance of incorporating cybersecurity considerations in the due diligence process, the practical aspects of evaluating a company's security posture, managing risks, and ensuring a smooth post-acquisition integration. Key discussion points include: The various stakeholders involved in M&A processes (e.g., buyers, sellers, and third-party consultants) and key areas to focus on during tech and product diligence, including cybersecurity, organizational structure, and technology processes. The importance of having a standardized playbook for M&A processes and the challenges of dealing with disparate cybersecurity practices across merged entities. The critical need for effective communication with non-technical stakeholders. -- Have a question for us? Welcome to episode 11 with Brent VanKuelen. Brent spent 27 years in the fire service in Oregon, retiring in 2019 as a Division Chief for Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue. Since retiring, Brent has spent his time consulting and works with the Western Fire Chiefs Association as a Technology Advisor. One of the first projects Brent was involved with at TVFR was building an application that that uses artificial intelligence to aid responders in better decision making. The app was built using input from providers instead of being built to meet administrative and reporting requirements. Reducing the noise that often occurs in reporting software was a focus of the project, and the end result was a more effective software creating an environment for better decision making by providers. Bob and Brent talked about the future of technology in fire response. Brent envisions the use of AI and augmented reality to provide incident details to responders. He also discusses his work with the WFCA and their current focus of advocating for the fire service in the private sector. They are achieving this goal through a technology accelerator engine that identifies companies developing products that will improve the experience for providers and the service provided to the public. One such partnership is with Rapid Deploy which is a cloud-based computer aided dispatch system that can be implemented in hours instead of months, which is the timeline for many systems currently in use. Stay tuned at the end of season 1, when Bob switches seats and we get to hear about his journey in the fire service and where he's headed next. When we make the leap from corporate into free agency, the first big decision we have to make is the kind of business we want to run. The franchise model has always been one of the best business ownership paths because there's so much support and structure available to us from day one. We get the benefits of buying into a proven model and following a blueprint that has been used successfully by other business owners. Everyone in the franchise is waving the same flag and pulling on the same rope, so we have a bigger chance of success and stability. Why did my guest choose a franchise opportunity in IT? How is he finding balance while still running an essential business? In this episode, technology advisor and the owner of TeamLogic IT, Kirk Gramoll talks about his journey into free agency, and how shifting his operating procedures has impacted his business. Three Things You'll Learn In This Episode Why the franchise model is so attractive to new free agents The support structure of a franchise provides massive opportunity. The existing fabric of other business owners who know the systems is the foundation for our own success. There will always be incredible resources and when business owners in the franchise can share insights, we can benefit. How to maintain team culture in an essential workplace Many businesses that have been deemed essential have adopted a hybrid model of interchangeably working from home and going into the office. This allows for social distancing, while also allowing teams to continue to have culture and cohesion. The power of having a business plan, even when the business grows A solid business plan is important when the business is new, but it becomes even more critical as the business grows, and business owners need to stay focused, and hold themselves accountable. Even when we pivot, we still need a plan to refer to and a direction for where to go next. Guest Bio Kirk is a Technology Advisor for Small and Medium Businesses and the Owner of TeamLogic IT.
