SPREZZATURA, Christopher Buckley's 30th book, is due from Lynx House Press, January 2025. The sense of place in these poems-- whether its the foggy cliffs above the sea or the street of Fresno-- is vivid and immediate.  Buckley examines friendship and the inevitability of change as he braids grief, love, and hope in these poems, many of which are dedicated to the great Fresno poets including Phillip Levine, Larry Levis and Peter Everewine.  Chris opens the show with two Everwine poems and discusses the book of interviews and essays he edited, "Naming the Lost: The Fresno Poets." Christopher Buckley's work was selected for Best American Poetry 2021; he is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship in Poetry, two NEA grants, a Fulbright Award in Creative Writing, and four Pushcart Prizes.   Recent books are—One Sky to the Next, winner of the Longleaf Press book Prize for 2022—Agnostic (Lynx House Press), The Pre-Eternity of the World (Stephen F. Austin State University Press), and The Consolations of Science & Philosophy (Lynx House Press). Star Journal: Selected Poems was published by University of Pittsburgh Press in 2016.  He has edited over a dozen critical collections and anthologies, most recently NAMING THE LOST: THE FRESNO POETS—Interviews & Essays; Bear Flag Republic: Prose Poems & Poetics from California (with Gary Young) Alcatraz Editions, 2008; with Alexander Long, A CONDITION OF THE SPIRIT: THE LIFE AND WORK OF LARRY LEVIS. Again co-edited with Gary Young, Lynx House Press published, One for the Money: the Sentence as a Poetic Form.  With Jon Veinberg, he edited MESSENGER TO THE STARS: A LUIS OMAR SALINAS NEW SELECTED POEMS & READER, published by Tebot Bach in 2014.

In this episode, Brian is open and honest about his rehab experience, and the way that it enables him to relate and understand personally to his homeless friends. Homelessness must be viewed in the context of a long complex story. Indeed, for most people in a state of homelessness, trauma is the foundation to their story of homelessness. This episode begins to explain why Trauma is a much bigger issue than most of us might think. Julia Pennington founded Dignifi to help people recover from the numbing pain of trauma. She has experience working in the criminal justice system and in local authorities, dedicating her life to helping people. Alongside the Dignifi team, Julia has created a step-by-step model to aid those afflicted by the effects of Trauma to facilitate recovery: Safety, Connection, Purpose. This conversation is utterly eye-opening, as Julia and myself converse and unpack the depths to which trauma can affect anyone! It's an important starting point, as we delve into the realities of the struggles our homeless friends face. I hope you enjoy, let's get at it! Welcome to the first Episode! This week, we'll be hearing from Mikkel Juel Iversen who explains how a nice gesture at Christmas, exploded into a complex operation to support those in a state of homelessness during the Covid-19 Pandemic. We'll hear about how his thinking has been challenged and changed through his interaction with friends he has made on the street through his work, as he has come to know the sustaining importance of human connection. Also, this week, Ross Plowman tells us how UOS has changed his view of 'homelessness', leading him and a couple friends to take the Under One Sky model up to Durham University, in the hope of spreading the mission of Under One Sky to other Universities. It's an easy and great listen full of stories and astute reflections - a great introduction for this podcast that aimed at changing the narrative surrounding Homelessness. Let's get at it! The Under One Sky podcast attempts to paint a picture of homelessness, as a story, that is unique, dynamic and complex. Each episode will draw on a guest's expertise and experience to bring to light a different lens to view homelessness, to give us as listeners a fuller understanding of homelessness that avoids careless speculation and stereotyping. This is podcast that first recognises the worth and value of the people that find themselves in a state of Homelessness. They are people like you and me, just the right things in their lives have gone wrong. I hope you'll enjoy listening in!

Exposure to air pollution is a leading global health risk which causes ill health and millions of premature deaths each year worldwide. A recent report titled “Different Air Under One Sky: The Inequity Air Research” published by Greenpeace India, estimates that 100% of the population in Malaysia live in areas with air pollution levels that are above the World Health Organisation's guidelines for safe air quality. Risks are not evenly distributed amongst the population, with some groups of people at greater risk of harm. Steven Forrest Evolutionary Astrology Podcast

We say “astrology” as if it were one unified entity, but of course it is not. How many house systems are there? Do we use asteroids or not? What about Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto? – many traditionalists prefer to ignore them. Meanwhile, Uranian astrologers use hypothetical planets that no one has ever seen – Poseidon, Zeus and so on –  and swear by them. I hear they get good results too. As an evolutionary astrologer, much of what I say revolves around the south node of the Moon – but most commercial astrology programs do not even show its position unless you ask them to. Even more fundamentally, is astrology about the stars or the seasons? To a Vedic astrologer, the sign Aries and the constellation Aries are the same thing – but not to a western “Tropical” astrologer, where Aries starts with the northern Vernal Equinox, which has actually drifted back into Pisces over the centuries. To put it charitably, astrology is a “big tent.” To put it more pointedly, the many different branches of astrology contradict each other in fundamental ways. Inevitably, this reality leads to the question of which form of astrology is “the right one” – and there begins a slippery slope. Listen for more about the history behind the book Under One Sky.

The Bible doesn’t behave like we expect it to. It has rules but it’s not simply a list of rules. It contains stories but it’s not a clear narrative. It contains vast treasures of knowledge but it’s not an encyclopedia. It is filled with long, intense sections of (often very gloomy) poetry. It has in-depth and complex legal requirements. It is packed with strange, sensational and often bloody, history.      Believers have been both comforted and confused by it. Humans find it simultaneously sacred and scandalous. Some disciples dedicate their lives to deciphering it while other Christians hardly crack it open. How can people find the same book both breath-taking and boring? How are we supposed to think about, approach and be shaped by this library of books?

Welcome back to another episode of the DrumGAB podcast! This week I spoke with Etienne Mason from Montreal, Canada. We discuss his process with making a daily video series that he calls “Night Improvisation” and the trials, the successes and the overall vision with this series and what he hopes to achieve with his efforts.   Who is Etienne?   Etienne is a fellow that I met through interesting circumstances. Back in 2016 I competed in a drum solo contest for the Victoria Drum Festival and through those efforts DrumGAB was born. A year later I checked 2017’s winners and Etienne was one of them. After looking at his Facebook profile I decided to reach out to him and make a connection. This started a friendship and I have been very interested in his journey since then.   Etienne is a jazz enthusiast that goes about his own way in learning about music, making videos, recording audio and using social media to distribute his content. Through his efforts he has created a very unique sound and visual aesthetic to his videos. He also incorporates keyboards into his music and controls everything live. I have heard several times that people find Etienne to be mysterious and so hopefully this podcast will allow people to understand him better.   Key moments in this episode   - Etienne begins by explaining how he developed his drumming abilities, which for the record are impressive. After one year at McGill University, Etienne dropped out because he felt he couldn’t have fun practicing anymore. Etienne prefers to learn his own way and likes to explore and mess around to learn new things. He used the money saved from leaving school to find his own place to rehearse.   - Next we discuss the level of composition that goes into a musical piece. We debate a little about whether he a drummer first or a composer first. Etienne walks us through how he goes about creating his music and what is revealed as a very lengthy process that he does every single day.   - So how does Etienne make these videos? What exactly did he have to do to make it happen daily? Well, the story to that may be the most important aspect of the interview. He literally had to set up and tear down every single day. He would ride his skateboard for twenty minutes with all of his gear in his hands to get to the space that he only had access to from 10 PM to 5 AM. He didn’t sleep much to say the least and whenever he had band rehearsals, he didn’t really sleep at all. I have never really heard of a story like this of how difficult it would have been to uphold a daily routine like this for the first eighty videos he would make. He had to make a change to survive the winter and continue with this series.   - Before these videos and his EP’s, Etienne played in TWENTY bands! All original music and it was up to him to keep it all organized. When he told me this, I was impressed with his will to work. It is nearly impossible for me to imagine how difficult that had to have been. He eventually burned out and had to remove himself from that situation and so he began making his own music again to fix himself.   - We then discuss what brought him to the Victoria Drum Festival and how that experience changed his outlook with his career that he is now trying really hard to establish.   - Our final point that we discuss is the topic of failure. Why is failure so important to personal growth and whether Etienne feels regret for any of the decisions he has made up until now.   Concluding Thoughts   I think the thing that people will take from this conversation is that we as artists and musicians need to approach our projects and develop our skills from an internal perspective. There is nothing wrong with referencing other people to help inspire us, but ultimately we have to be okay with who we are and what we want to create. Once that is identified, we have to push as hard as we can to become noticed. There will be many times when we all question our efforts and whether they are a waste of time, but every once in a while a wave will come by and introduce us to the next stage of our journey.   It is the hardest part of doing this. The not knowing part. Believing that we are moving in the right direction and whether anyone really cares or not. Etienne is not quite halfway through his daily series and it will be interesting to see what comes of his efforts. But whatever the case may be, it cannot be denied that what he is doing is unique, good quality and is a testament to what he is prepared to endure to see it through.   Tracks featured (in order) all performed by MaySun   1. One Sky is an international NGO that works with governments and communities to help the most disadvantaged and marginalized children. Jenny Bowen is a storyteller. In this interview, she tells the story of OneSky. I would also suggest that you pick up Jenny’s book, Wish You Happy Forever: What China’s Children Taught Me About Moving Mountains. Because Jenny tells the story so well, I recommend the audiobook. It seems like a simple concept. When children interact with loving parents, they learn…well, they learn everything. They learn a sense of self. They develop language and mobility and curiosity and so much more. But, not all children are so lucky as to have loving parents. In some extreme cases, children are neglected. They can wither and eventually die. In 1996, Jenny Bowen and her husband Dick read an article about Children’s Welfare Institutions, or orphanages. They sat in stunned disbelief as they learned the mortality rate of children in these orphanages was upwards of 85%. They were moved to help, but they were not sure what exactly to do. It was Dick who first suggested that they could adopt one of the children and bring her home. In 1997 Jenny and Dick adopted Maya from a Chinese orphanage. When they received their daughter, she suffered from parasites and dysentery. She was emotionally vacant. Jenny says that she did what any mother would have done. She loved her daughter, interacted with her, read to her and paid attention to her. Maya’s development was subtle at first. But one year after adopting Maya, Jenny watched Maya play in the garden with other children. Jenny said to Dick, “It’s so easy…why don’t we do that for all the kids we can’t bring home?” She knew that she had to go back to China to help other vulnerable children like Maya. Jenny’s story is one of incredible perseverance. She focused on solutions. She flowed like a river around immovable objects. When people did not say no, she took it as a yes. She transcended political, cultural and language barriers to find what was accessible to everyone: the love of children and the desire to see those children prosper. Today, Jenny is the CEO and Founder of OneSky. She sees the problem of child development as a global problem. She says that about one-half of all children in the world will never reach their full potential because they don’t have access to the resources and love they need. OneSky for all children currently operates in China, Vietnam and soon, Myanmar. Social Entrepreneurship Quotes from Jenny Bowen “We focus on low resource communities.” “It’s so easy why don’t we do that for all the kids we can’t bring home.” “It wasn’t easy…Everyone told me that it would be impossible.” “I couldn’t have done what I have done if I did not feel absolutely driven.” “Our mission has grown to focus on what is universal in all children.” “We were certainly living comfortable lives, and maybe we could save one life.” “I knew what I had to do. I just knew it.” Social Entrepreneurship Resources: OneSky: https://onesky.org/ OneSky on Twitter: https://twitter.com/oneskyorg OneSky on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/onesky.org OneSky on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/oneskyorg/ Book: Wish You Happy Forever: What China’s Children Taught Me About Moving Mountains: http://amzn.to/2xzyBNL Book: Crazy Good Advice: 10 Lessons Learned from 150 Leading Social Entrepreneurs: https://tonyloyd.com/book

In a departure from our usual fare of space news and policy, this week we took some time to contemplate the skies. Danielle Adams, a doctoral candidate at The University of Arizona in the School of Middle East and North African Studies with a minor in the School of Anthropology stopped by to discuss her current project with us. Two Deserts, One Sky is a project in cultural astronomy connecting the present day desert sky in Arizona across time to the desert skies observed by Arab cultures between the 9th and 12th centuries CE. Danielle weaves the stories recorded by these past cultures in with instructions on how to view the asterisms in the night sky with naked eye observing. In this episode, we speak with Danielle both about Two Deserts, One Sky and how her interest in astronomy and Arab culture led her to the pursuit of this project.    We often speak about the importance of NASA in the community on our show, and this episode provided us with an opportunity to showcase how NASA supports not only those in the STEM fields, but important social science research as well. Two Deserts, One Sky is funded as an outreach project by NASA through the Arizona Space Grant Consortium, along with The University of Arizona's School of Middle East and North African Studies and the School of Anthropology. Show Recorded 2-29-16 Host this week: Kassy Tamanini Special Guest: Danielle Addams  Panel Members: Gene Mikulka and Kat Robison

However as the company looks toward Launch 101, the joint venture between Lockheed Martin and Boeing heads into uncharted territory and uncertain waters as a launch services provider. The team discusses.the challenges that lay ahead for the firm.   On September 28 NASA announced the confirmation that brine water has at certain times, been collecting on the surface of Mars.  The initial report made on 4 August 2011 (which we discussed   on Episode 334 )  was confirmed with a NASA press conference  and the team examines the announcement itself, the reaction to the announcement  in some circles, and   the implications not only for NASA's planned human Mars exploration efforts, but for the future of human solar system exploration going forward.   Host this week: Sawyer Rosenstein,  Panel members:  Mark Ratterman, Kat Robison, Kassy Tamanini (CraftLass) & Gene Mikulka
