A key driver of the modern increase in global entrepreneurship is the increasing participation of women in sectors that were once inaccessible to them. This Global Entrepreneurship Week, CIPE's Elena Ratoi sits down with Arijeta Pajaziti Qerimi, a trailblazer for women in Kosovo's energy sector. Together, they discuss how Arijeta's recent partnership with CIPE's Center for Women's Economic Empowerment is strengthening women's participation in Kosovo's traditionally male-dominated energy sector. Listeners will learn how new technology is decreasing labor-intensive roles, how young women are meeting older role models, and how more women-centered events are decreasing knowledge gaps. Guest Bio Arijeta Pajaziti Qerimi's professional career as an electrical engineer is complemented by her academic profile with a Master of Science degree from the Electrotechnical Faculty, University of Prishtina. Besa Luci in conversation with Gentiana Paçarizi and Aulonë Kadriu. We are leaving behind a year full of developments in Kosovo, the region and beyond. As always, we as journalists find ourselves having to be attentive and responsible for how we talk about what's happening around us. As this is the last episode of this season of the Other Talking Points podcast and the last week of 2023 we take this moment to reflect on and discuss the work at our magazine. This year, our coverage has included scrutinizing the Kosovar government's domestic performance; following recurring tensions in the north of the country and the Kosovo-Serbia EU-mediated dialogue; emphasizing human rights, with a particular focus on labor rights and gender-based violence; and discussing climate change and climate justice, to name a few.Two K2.0 editors join the podcast to discuss our coverage of these dominant issues and what stood out in our journalism this year: Gentiana Paçarizi, K2.0's managing editor and Aulonë Kadriu, senior editor.Other Talking Points is produced by Besa Luci and Aulonë Kadriu.Music and sound mix by PUG musik. This podcast is part of the Human Rightivism project, which is funded by the Embassy of Sweden in Prishtina, implemented by the Community Development Fund through its Human Rightivism Program. Besa Luci in conversation with Bertan Selim and Majlinda Hoxha. In this episode, we discuss photography's storytelling role, capacity to distill complex human realities in a single image, ethical questions faced by photographers and the opportunities and barriers faced by young aspiring artists. Photography is a powerful visual storytelling medium, be it in documentary form or in a more conceptual approach. Photography documents society around us, inviting and often provoking us to notice and pay attention to perspectives and experiences that otherwise may go unseen. Storytelling through photography opens access to other forms of political and social engagement, observation and reaction. Photography-based projects often allow space and time for a different type of sensibility and exploration, whether the work is driven by an intrinsically personal enquiry and memory or the aspiration to question or understand the impact of larger societal transformations on people's everyday surroundings. Across the region, artistic and professional photography work is expanding and flourishing. Yet young and emerging photographers are often faced with limited educational, professional and financial opportunities.  Two guests join us to discuss the power and influence of visual storytelling, as well as the type of work driving young photographers in the region today.Bertan Selim is founder and executive director of VID Foundation for Photography, an Amsterdam-based Foundation that supports emerging visual storytellers from the Balkans with grants and mentorships. In 2014 he helped set up the Arab Documentary Photography Programme (ADPP), a joint collaboration of the Prince Claus Fund, Arab Fund for Arts and Culture and Magnum Foundation. He regularly curates photo shows and lectures at different art academies throughout Europe.Majlinda Hoxha is a photography editor at K2.0. Majlinda received her Masters of Fine Arts from Elam School of Fine Art at Auckland University, New Zealand in 2008. Besa Luci in conversation with Haris Pašović and Natasha TripneyIn 2022 we published an in-depth article on the theater landscape in Kosovo. Speaking about theater professionals' arduous working conditions, actor Adrian Morina remarked that “Theater is a mirror of all institutions.” Whether or not theater professionals are supported reveals institutions' understanding — or lack thereof — of this art form's significance.. Theaters have always had a dynamic relationship with power structures. Their stages have served as venues for political critique, revolt and reflection. As such, they have played pivotal roles in how our democracies are shaped, questioned or refuted. Particularly in our region, theaters have pushed societies to confront subjects that might otherwise be avoided. We have seen plays on the wars our region has endured that have invited us to face and critically engage with the past. We have encountered plays questioning the international community's role in our region. In a region where freedom does not extend to women, LBGTQ+ individuals and ethnic minorities, we have witnessed how theaters expose societies' flaws. We have also viewed plays on how theaters and artists themselves should become more self-critical, more radical or more vigorous, as the Bosnian theater director Haris Pašović says in an interview published in SEEstage.Haris is one of the guests on the podcast today. He is the director of the East West Centre Sarajevo and a professor of theater and film directing at the Performing Arts Academy in Sarajevo. The other guest is Natasha Tripney, a writer and theater critic based in London. Besa Luci in conversation with Paul Caruana Galizia and Jeta Xharra. In this episode, we talk about threats to journalism and to journalists covering topics that those in power seek to conceal. In his recently published book, “A Death in Malta,” Paul Caruana Galizia says: “Two worlds, corruption and writing about it, collided.” This statement and the entire book refer to the work of his late mother, Daphne Caruana Galizia, the renowned Maltese journalist who was assassinated by a car bomb in 2017 in Malta. Across the globe, many journalists face similar violent collisions of worlds, particularly when challenging or calling out abuses of power. Caruana Galizia's book highlights how independent journalism is viewed as the problem in many countries rather than the corruption and injustice it exposes. Journalists are often left to fend for themselves with few possibilities for protection. And when they do their job in countries that are seen as rather peripheral to world politics such as Kosovo and Malta, these possibilities become all the more limited. Caruana Galizia is joined in this episode by Kosovar journalist Jeta Xharra. They discuss how corrupt political and economic systems, when combined with lax justice systems, create an unsafe environment for journalists; how for women, gender is a crucial marker of professional experience; and share personal stories of their relationship to journalism. Paul Caruana Galizia became a journalist after his mother was assassinated. Since then, he has won an Orwell Prize special award, a British Journalism Award and other honors for his reporting. With his brothers, he has received a Magnitsky Human Rights Award and an Anderson-Lucas-Normal Award for campaigning to achieve justice for Daphne.Jeta Xharra is the Director of Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN) in Kosovo, as well as a leading anchor and editor of “Life in Kosovo”. She has written for the Economist, Sunday Telegraph and Jane's Intelligence Review. While in the UK, she worked for the Foreign News Planning Desk at the BBC World Service, Institute for War and Peace Reporting and in 2005 she became one of the founders of Balkan Investigative Reporting Network. In 2012 the South East Europe Media Organisation, SEEMO, named Jeta Xharra as winner of the 2012 Dr Erhard Busek — SEEMO Award for Better Understanding in South East Europe.Other Talking Points is produced by Besa Luci and Aulonë Kadriu.Music and sound mix by PUG musik. This podcast is part of the Human Rightivism project, which is funded by the Embassy of Sweden in Prishtina, implemented by the Community Development Fund through its Human Rightivism Program. Besa Luci in conversation with Loic Tregoures and Albert Mecini. If there's one form of entertainment that can be considered universal, it's sports. Be it through regular state games, regional matches, or worldwide competitions — sports have long been part of everyday life across the world. However, talking about sports transcends discussions of games, scores, favorite teams or favorite athletes. Sports have long been an intrinsic part of modern societies' economic and political existence. In this regard, sports play a role in forging modern identities, serving as markers of national identity and expressions of national pride. Sports also serve as spaces where countries strive for international recognition, acceptance and visibility. Sports' political nature means that sports hold the power and potential to either unite or divide cities, societies, or countries. Pitches and sports fields often become settings for larger political disputes to manifest, either in a given society's internal politics or between different states. While it can be easy to emphasize sports' divisive aspects, sports have become a force bringing together societies and countries in shared attempts to shape and promote relevant values and causes. And it is in this regard that we often hear about how sports could heal divisions in post-conflict societies and serve as an avenue for calls against racism and for equality and inclusion. Two guests join us to discuss topics surrounding sports as a unifying and divisive force. Loic Tregoures has authored several articles on sports and politics in Yugoslavia. He specializes in the Balkans, especially sports and has a PhD focusing specifically in football in the Yugoslav chaos. Albert Mecini is an assistant at the Department of Sociology at the University of Prishtina and PhD candidate. Besa Luci in conversation with Adelina Rose and Lana Vee.Drag is thriving in our region, both as a form of art and as a tool for radical change. The vibrant art of drag is becoming ever more present in the public sphere. But as drag artists and performers find and claim their space in the public domain, they face constant backlash, resistance and pushbacks. Being strongly linked with celebration of queerness and the LGBTQ+ rights cause, drag artists fight difficult battles in a region that has long been unaccepting, if not outright violent, towards LGBTQ+ people and allies. In addition to being a form of rebellion, drag is developing as an industry and a career in which performers invest a lot of energy, thought and labor. However, such labor tends to go unnoticed, and perhaps undervalued particularly when combined with an overall societal intolerance towards those who do not conform with norms or seek to shift them. Two guests join us to discuss the dynamics of drag art in our region.Erblin Nushi is a Kosovar filmmaker, director, producer. Besa Luci in conversation with Kaltrina Krasniqi and Kumjana Novakova. In this episode, we will be talking about contemporary cinematography in the region. The region has always been rich in filmmaking. Each generation of filmmakers, as well as each country, has had its own political and cultural trajectory that played a role in shaping their relationship to cinema. Yet, there are also commonalities, be it in terms of thematic approach, artistic sensibility and language, or the obstacles in production and distribution. In regard to contemporary filmmaking, a potential common thread that emerges is the idea of chronicling the nation. The ways in which this storytelling is conducted are continually evolving – from examining narratives of war from a perspective of aftermath and trauma, investigating personal and collective archives to shed light on histories that could be forgotten, to tackling identity and gender roles through an increasingly intersectional understanding of historical experiences of oppression.Yet, such themes and entry points into film are not exclusive to the region. These approaches are widespread and take into account the cultural and historical nuances that shape different political realities. This is just one of many reasons that film professionals from the region have critiqued the tendency to box their films into a “specific Balkan experience” -- a label that not only locates the films geographically and culturally, but that also risks being internalized into the gaze applied to the telling of a story. This is one of the issues explored in this episode. Others include; the contribution that women filmmakers have been making in expanding the historiography of film; the responsibility filmmakers carry as storytellers informing our understanding of the world; as well as the difficulties independent filmmakers face in producing and distributing their work. Two guests join us to discuss these topics.Kaltrina Krasniqi is an award winning Kosovo based film director and researcher working in film and digital humanities since the early 2000s. Her debut feature film “Vera Dreams of the Sea” premiered in the 78th Venice Film Festival in 2021, which was awarded the Tokyo International Film Festival Grand Prix 2021 and the Ingmar Bergman Award at Gothenburg Film Festival 2022, among other accolades. Kumjana Novakova is a research-based filmmaker, film curator and lecturer. She is the cofounder, chief curator and director of the Pravo Ljudski Film Festival in Sarajevo. Her film “Disturbed Earth” has been shortlisted for the Academy Awards, and nominated for best feature-length documentary by the Doc Alliance. Other Talking Points is produced by Besa Luci and Aulonë Kadriu. This podcast is part of the Human Rightivism project, which is funded by the Embassy of Sweden in Prishtina, implemented by the Community Development Fund through its Human Rightivism Program. Besa Luci in conversation with Aida Hozić and Aidan Hehir. In this first episode, we will be talking about political discourses and narratives about the region — how they're constructed, how they relate to political reality, who gets to shape them, and finally, how these narratives end up shaping the region.Since the end of the Yugoslav wars, the dominant frameworks applied to the region have been international development and peace and conflict studies — there's been a focus on reconciliation, transition to democracy, and so forth. But such frameworks are being increasingly criticized, particularly as there seems to be a fundamental conflict between local agency and the international community's efforts to control these processes. One example of this is the EU's political strategy toward the Western Balkans, which is often described as arbitrary or even hypocritical in nature. The question of whether Brussels is genuinely committed to the region's EU accession is more pertinent than ever. Critics argue that the EU-accession process is now just half-hearted lip-service meant to simply contain and placate the people of the Western Balkans."Enlargement fatigue" is without a doubt taking place, particularly given the divided attention of EU officials, who are dealing with the rise of semi-authoritarian regimes inside the bloc, the ongoing economic and energy crises, Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and now Israel's war on Gaza. The international media and academia also play a role in shaping how we understand and engage in such discussions. All too often, their narratives tend to disregard local experiences and local voices.    Two guests join us to discuss the interplay of political narratives and practices that take place between the international community and the region. Aida Hozić is a scholar originally from Sarajevo who writes and teaches about international politics at the University of Florida. Her research is situated at the intersection of feminist political economy, cultural studies and international security. Aidan Hehir is a Reader in International Relations at the University of Westminster. Secession Podcast: Artists is a series of conversations featuring artists exhibiting at the Secession. This episode is a conversation between the artist Mykola Ridnyi and the board member and artist Anna Witt. It was recorded on September 15, 2023 in the context of the exhibition: Mykola Ridnyi 15.9. – 12.11.2023 Mykola Ridnyi's generation of Ukrainians grew up in a climate of increasing orientation toward the West and the European Union. This emancipation from Russia found expression in the 2004 Orange Revolution and was defended in the Euromaidan events of 2013–14. It was a process that went hand in hand with the emergence of a confident Ukrainian arts scene, among whose leading exponents Ridnyi ranks. Long before graduating from the Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Arts in 2008, he was instrumental to the formation of a politically active arts scene, both as an artist in his own right and as a curator and author. He was a founding member of the art collective SOSka, whose SOSka gallery-lab, an artist-run space that existed from 2005 until 2012, was a key contribution to the local artistic infrastructure. Ridnyi's curatorial project Armed and Dangerous (2017–2021) prompted him to begin developing a platform for collaborations between Ukrainian moving-image artists and filmmakers. In 2022–23, he curated several Ukrainian film and video art screening programs at DAAD-Galerie, Berlin; MAXXI, Rome; Museum Folkwang, Essen; and the National Gallery, Sofia. More Anna Witt, born in Germany in 1981, lives and works in Vienna and Berlin. Her artistic practice is performative, participatory, and political. She creates situations that reflect interpersonal relationships and power structures as well as conventions of speaking and acting. Her work has been shown at the SEMA Seoul Museum of Art; the Secession, Vienna; the 1st Vienna Biennale at MAK; the Gallery of Contemporary Art Leipzig; Museum Ludwig, Cologne; the Austrian Cultural Forum in New York; Kunstmuseum Bern; and the MOCA Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei, among others, and she has had solo exhibitions at Museum Belvedere 21 Contemporary, Vienna; Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen, and Gallery Tanja Wagner, Berlin, at Marabouparken konsthall, Stockholm and Stacion—Center for Contemporary Art, Prishtina, Kosovo.

Welcome to Episode #86 of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast! My conversation with Rina Mehmeti and Agnesa Mehmeti, sister yoga teachers and yoga studio co-owners from Kosovo, was so beautiful as they shed light on what it was like to open the first yoga studio in Kosovo and how yoga impacted their community after all the turmoil and difficulties that followed the war. If you're looking to tune into a podcast episode that is all about yoga in Kosovo then this is the conversation for you. Support the podcast: https://www.patreon.com/wildyogatribe What to expect in the Yoga In Kosovo episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast Step into the vibrant world of yoga in Kosovo with Rina and Agnesa Mehmeti, the dynamic duo behind Urban Yoga in Pristina. In this episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast, they share their incredible journey of opening a yoga studio in a country that was relatively unfamiliar with yoga just a few years ago. Rina and Agnesa's story begins with skepticism from friends and colleagues who couldn't fathom leaving their stable jobs for the path of yoga. But their passion for helping others and the word-of-mouth recommendations soon started to spread, creating a buzz around their studio. Local media coverage further introduced yoga to the community, dispelling misconceptions that yoga was simply sitting in a cross-legged position. The pandemic played a surprising role in boosting the popularity of yoga, turning it into a lifestyle choice that benefits both mental health and physical well-being. Beyond their studio's success, Rina and Agnesa offer insights into the beautiful country of Kosovo. They describe it as a small nation with stunning mountains and a young population. They highlight the warmth and hospitality of the people, making visitors feel like part of a family. They also touch upon the challenging times Kosovo faced during the war, recounting their personal experiences as refugees and the difficulties of living in a post-war environment. However, they express optimism for the future, with positive changes occurring in the country and the upcoming visa liberalization that will allow easier travel within Europe. For Rina and Agnesa, yoga is not just a physical practice but a transformative experience. It has helped them find balance, navigate anxiety, and be fully present in every moment. They view yoga as a powerful tool for healing and personal growth, instilling a sense of love, connection, and gratitude for life. Tell me more about Rina & Agnesa Mehmeti Agnesa and Rina Mehmeti are sisters and yoga teachers Kosovo. They co-own the Urban Yoga studio in Prishtina, the capital city of Kosovo. Besa Luci in conversation with Ilir Gashi and Aulonë Kadriu. In our last episode of the first season of Other Talking Points, we are revisiting the topic of travel. Not long ago, when we recorded our first episode, we talked about travel in the region and what it tells us about our shared past, our current sense of belonging and our understanding of one another. One aspect of the conversation was Kosovars' long isolation, a result of the EU's visa regime. For years, practically the only places Kosovars could travel to without going through a dehumanizing visa application process were neighboring countries.Change seems to be underway. On April 18, the European Parliament decided to lift visa requirements for Kosovars starting in January 2024, nearly 15 years after other countries in the region were granted this right. What will Kosovars do come January? Will everyone leave? Who will stay? There are rising fears that young people will clear out as soon as they can. In advance, some are pleading for them to stay. In a recent blog call K2.0 asked young Kosovars the questions: What keeps you in Kosovo? Do we owe it to Kosovo to stay? Will travel start feeling more like a normal activity rather than an escape? In anticipation of the publication of these blogs in June, two guests joined us to discuss some of the responses we got from young Kosovars and also to explore our relationship to travel. Ilir Gashi works at the intersection of media, activism, art and technology. He was a guest in the first episode of Other Talking Points and he wrote an article last year for K2.0 titled “The Alternative Balkan Postal Service," which was recently shortlisted for the European Press Prize for Distinguished Reporting.Aulonë Kadriu is an editor at K2.0 and one of the producers of Other Talking Points. Besa Luci in conversation with Erëmirë Krasniqi and Milena Prevelić.Historical memory is shaped by what is documented. What we remember or celebrate, what we overlook or forget, is a result of the narratives we choose, or which are chosen for us.The official historical record is always subject to attempts to reveal or conceal different facts or narratives. They often also serve as a site of power-plays, where the strong choose who to glorify (often themselves and their ideological forebearers). Women, ethnic minorities, and other marginalized groups are often excluded or misrepresented. This peripheral or superficial inclusion of the marginalized creates a collective memory that is fragmented and incomplete. Moreover, such erasure is never an innocent omission, it is a deliberate act that aims to perpetuate exclusion into the future. But there are a number of grassroots initiatives working to challenge official histories by documenting and disseminating a wider range of historical experiences and narratives. Through oral history, film, photography and exhibitions they are documenting and sharing the stories and events that did not make it into the official narrative about the past. In this episode, we talk in more detail about two such initiatives. The first is the exhibition “A Site of Political Struggle: Trepça Mine 1989,” a collaboration between Oral History Kosovo and forumZFD. The second is "They Live: Student lives through context-based art practices," a collaboration between several public institutions, universities and NGOs from Montenegro, Serbia and Croatia that documented the experience of student dorm life across the generations. We are joined by the two of the researchers behind these projects. Erëmirë Krasniqi is a researcher and curator and the executive director of Oral History Kosovo. She recently curated the exhibition on the Trepça miners strike of 1989.Milena Prevelić is a cultural worker and member of the Institute of Contemporary Art in Montenegro. Besa Luci in conversation with Maša Mileusnić and Dafina Halili. In this episode, we talk about the experiences of women journalists in Kosovo, Serbia and the broader region. Though women's perspectives and voices are increasingly incorporated into media content, there's been relatively limited discussion about how media outlets are failing women journalists in the workplace. Women have long been aware of the pervasiveness of gender discrimination, but two recent reports have documented the full extent of workplace sexism in newsrooms across Kosovo and Serbia. The findings of these reports align with global surveys that reflect the unfortunate truth that gender-based discrimination is prevalent in the media workplace.Relying on surveys and conversations with over 500 women journalists across the two countries, it is one of the first comprehensive looks into the topic. Some of the forms of discrimination highlighted in the research are sexual harassment, ageism and the lack of support for journalists who are mothers. These obstacles result in hostile work environments that can compromise the well-being of women journalists and hinder their professional growth. We were joined by Maša Mileusnić and Dafina Halili to discuss the reports' findings and other challenges women face as journalists. Maša Mileusnić is a journalist and a member of the Serbia-based network Women Journalists Against Violence Towards Women. Dafina Halili is a journalist and contributing editor at Kosovo 2.0. Besa Luci in conversation with Adi Ćerimagić and Augustin Palokaj. In this episode, we talk about the Association of Serb-Majority Municipalities in Kosovo.Arising in 2013 as part of an agreement between Kosovo and Serbia within the EU-mediated dialogue, the Association was promoted as a way to convince Kosovo Serbs to fully enter the Kosovar system, ensure their cultural autonomy and end the Serbian state's parallel structures within Kosovo. Still unimplemented after a decade, it's long been causing controversy.Following the initial 2013 agreement and a follow-up in 2015, Kosovo erupted in political turmoil. For weeks, in both years, the Assembly was brought to a halt by the then-opposition party Vetëvendosje, who argued that the Association was a way for Serbia to undermine Kosovo's sovereignty. The 2015 protests initiated a review by the Constitutional Court, which paradoxically said that aspects of the guiding principles of the Association were not in accordance with the Constitution, but that it was nevertheless a legal obligation for Kosovo. This past March, a much-awaited meeting took place in Ohrid, where Kosovo and Serbia agreed to, but did not sign, the “European Plan” for normalizing relations. Observers paid the most attention to a particular article of the 11-point plan, which would require Kosovo “to ensure an appropriate level of self-management for the Serbian community in Kosovo,” and to do so in accordance with previously reached agreements.Critics of the Association see it as an additional level of governance, “a state within a state,” which will lead to the “bosnification” of Kosovo, referring to the Republika Srpska entity in Bosnia and Herzegovina, also an imposed creation of the international community. But details are still scarce, and no one seems to actually know what the Association will look like. Two guests discuss the competing narratives around the Association as well as what this process tells us about the region's relationship with the EU and international community at large.Augustin Palokaj is the Brussels correspondent for KOHA group and has been following the dialogue for over a decade. Adi Ćerimagić is a senior analyst at the European Stability Initiative, a European think tank developing policy ideas on South East Europe, asylum policy, human rights and democracy.Other Talking Points is produced by Besa Luci, Aulonë Kadriu and Gentiana Paçarizi. Music and sound mix by PUG musik. This podcast is part of the Human Rightivism project, which is funded by the Embassy of Sweden in Prishtina, implemented by the Community Development Fund through its Human Rightivism Program. Besa Luci in conversation with Lindita Tahiri and Jovana Gligorijević.Songs, movies, reality shows, video games, news — these products of popular culture shape our society. From the way we interact with others, how we view our own identities, how we dress — it's all influenced by popular culture and mass media. In this episode, we will talk about popular culture and specific cases from the region.Over the last few months, much of Kosovo became captivated with "Big Brother VIP Kosova," the first local edition of the international reality show series. The show, which featured contestants from across the dominant spheres of pop culture in Kosovo, reached unprecedented levels of popularity. It was due to this widespread popularity that some were particularly concerned about the misogyny and homophobia that was a prominent aspect of the show and the characters' conversation. How was this questionable celebrity culture shaping its viewers?Other forms of popular culture have also come under scrutiny. For example, mainstream music in our region often perpetuates sexist, nationalist or homophobic ideas. The daily news cycle, particularly entertainment news, often centers on personalities and spectacle. Internet culture is driven by constant comparisons to unhealthy and unrealistic lifestyles, which exacerbates teenagers' body image and mental health issues. These pop culture elements in our lives play a role in establishing common norms and social expectations — but many voices or groups are neglected or even oppressed in the dominant narratives. That is why pop culture's significance is not just tied up in concerns about quality or that it's material produced for the lowest common denominator. Pop culture is shaped by and shapes the ideological, political and economic values of the world around us.Academics have long discussed this aspect of pop culture. Is it merely the vulgar transformation of culture into a commodity? Or does pop culture have the potential to be a site of resistance — one where values and norms can be challenged and reimagined? Two guests joined us in this episode to discuss such questions.Lindita Tahiri teaches at the Department of English Language and at the Department of Journalism at the University of Prishtina. Her courses cover Literary Criticism, Mass Communication, Language and Culture, Language and Ideology. She has publications, including three books, in the field of literary criticism and critical discourse analysis, as well as two university textbooks in mass communication and media literacy.Jovana Gligorijević is a journalist at the Belgrade-based magazine Vreme and co-founder of the group “Female journalists against gender based violence.” She co-authored guidelines for ethical reporting on gender-based violence and is the author of media literacy manuals for high school teachers.Other Talking Points is produced by Besa Luci, Aulonë Kadriu and Gentiana Paçarizi. Music and sound mix by PUG musik. This podcast is part of the Human Rightivism project, which is funded by the Embassy of Sweden in Prishtina, implemented by the Community Development Fund through its Human Rightivism Program. Besa Luci in conversation with Marta Lempart and Shqipe Gjocaj. In this episode we talk about how women across the globe are facing setbacks in their struggle for bodily autonomy. One of the ways this is happening is in the banning or restricting of abortion access. In Poland, abortion has been banned since 2020. Though there are supposed to be exceptions in the case of rape, incest or when the health of the mother is endangered, a Polish pregnant woman recently died because doctors refused to perform an abortion that her family states would have saved her life. Abortion rights are being restricted in the U.S. as well. Last year the Supreme Court overruled Roe v Wade, the ruling protecting the right abortion. As a result, 18 states have now banned or restricted abortion, with many other states looking to follow suit. And there are cases when abortion is legal, but practically inaccessible. In Croatia, for example, abortion is expensive and doctors often refuse to perform it. In other countries, like Kosovo and Serbia, abortion is legal and largely accessible, but there is still a deep taboo and shame about discussing the common procedure openly and without shame. It's not just abortion where women are facing setbacks. In Kosovo, a draft law on Reproductive Health and Assisted Fertility came up for a vote in the Assembly recently. During the debate on the Assembly floor, one deputy said that assisted fertility is a threat to the family as it would allow unmarried women to have children. This comment was unwelcome to deputy Saranda Bogujevci, who declared that women must always be in control of their own choices about pregnancy. In response, Bogujevci faced a wave of sexist statements, both in the Assembly and online.Beyond these specific cases, women's bodily integrity continues to be threatened, as shown by the prevalence of sexual harassment, rape, abuse, and femicide across the world. Women are constantly judged on the basis of their looks, their sexual activity, their clothing and their choices. Women's autonomy, it seems, is still up for debate, and the ones debating it are men.Marta Lempart and Shqipe Gjocaj joined us in this episode to discuss the topics of women's rights and bodily autonomy, as well as the ways some governments are clamping down on women's liberties.Marta Lempart is a Polish women's rights activist and founder of the Polish Women's Strike.  Shqipe Gjocaj is a feminist activist, gender specialist, and independent journalist from Kosovo. Other Talking Points is produced by Besa Luci, Aulonë Kadriu and Gentiana Paçarizi. Music and sound mix by PUG musik. This podcast is part of the Human Rightivism project, which is funded by the Embassy of Sweden in Prishtina, implemented by the Community Development Fund through its Human Rightivism Program. Besa Luci in conversation with Jelena Čolaković and Valmira Rashiti. In this episode we talk about the legal recognition of LGBTQ+ rights, with a focus on same-sex unions.Securing fundamental human rights across the Balkans is an ongoing challenge, and some groups are more discriminated against than others. In terms of the human rights of LGBTQ+ people, governments across the region often dismiss the fact that queer people are deserving of all the rights and respect as any other citizen.Recent legislative discussions in Kosovo about a new Civil Code demonstrated this tendency. Many Assembly members' refused to move forward on a set of policies and laws that would improve citizens' lives simply because they were in opposition to a single article in the Code which would have opened a path to same-sex civil unions in Kosovo.During the parliamentary discussions, representatives, many of whom were from the progressive left party, demonstrated that they don't see LGBTQ+ people as full citizens. Homophobic statements in the Assembly echoed out across the country and prompted hate speech on social media, marking a setback for the fight for human rights.Similar institutionalized homophobia is common in neighboring countries. But in 2020, Montenegro took a first step towards legalizing same-sex civil partnerships, though with a very narrow majority. While this was touted as a historical step by government representatives, the right to adopt or foster children remains inaccessible, meaning that there is still a long path to full equality. Two guests joined us in this episode to discuss what the progress, or lack thereof, for same-sex unions tells us about LGBTQ+ recognition as well as societies' understandings of the institution of the family. Jelena Čolaković is program director of Juventas, a Montenegro-based NGO working in social justice.Valmira Rashiti is Gender Mainstreaming Officer at Kosovo Women's Network, an NGO supporting, protecting and promoting the rights of women in Kosovo. This podcast is part of the Human Rightivism project, which is funded by the Embassy of Sweden in Prishtina, implemented by the Community Development Fund through its Human Rightivism Program. Besa Luci in conversation with Marigona Drevinja and Nađa Bobičić.In this episode we'll be talking about unpaid labor — about the cleaning, cooking, childcare, eldercare and more that is performed inside the home and in the family and which is not remunerated. Though unpaid, this labor is essential for the functioning of society and for other people's ability to engage in paid labor. What makes the issue of unpaid labor so important is that it is mostly performed by women. This means that women are either expected to stay at home and out of the labor force or, if they have formal employment, to work a "second shift" after their regular working hours to take care of the household and the others living there. This not only takes a physical, emotional and professional toll on women, it also prevents many from accessing the labor market in the first place. Two guests join us this episode to discuss unpaid labor in Kosovo, the Balkans and beyond.Marigona Drevinja is the co-founder and Program Director of the Prishtina-based Institute for Social Policy “Musine Kokalari." Besa Luci in conversation with Visar Ymeri and Aleksandar Pavlović.In this episode, we look at the ways we talk about the relationship between Kosovo and Serbia.Since 2011, the dominant framework for talking about the relationship between the two countries has been in the context of the EU-mediated dialogue. From time to time, the media might report on cultural cooperation, instances of economic integration or citizen-based initiatives. But such reports are few and far between, and often disappear amid the constant flow of sensationalist or conflict-driven narratives. Are there other stories and narratives that go beyond ethnic enmity and EU diplomatic bureaucracy?Though there appears to be little academic exchange or collaboration between the two countries, the recently published book “Kosovo-Serbia: A Different Approach” is trying to bring scholars from the two countries together to challenge preconceived notions, confront historical revisionism and propose some common narratives. The book was published by the Musine Kokolari Institute for Social Policy in Prishtina and the Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory in Belgrade. It proposes progressive perspectives on pressing social, economic and ecological questions with the aim of showing similarities between Serbs and Albanians through shared contemporary struggles and concerns. Two of the publication's main initiators discuss the book and the new frameworks for talking about Kosovo and Serbia relations.Visar Ymeri is an activist, analyst and politician who served as the deputy leader of the Social Democratic Party of Kosovo. This is not necessarily an experience limited to this region; attempts to keep trans lives in the margins is something occurring globally. Nevertheless, there is a lot of knowledge and documentation of the multilayered histories of trans existence and activist engagement in the region. On the podcast, they discuss what drives people to travel and connect across borders in the face of the tense political climate and barriers in the region. With mainstream politics dominated by narratives of division, individual travel not only serves as a quiet protest to such narratives, but reveals the countless everyday cross-border and multilingual ties that continue to connect us.Other Talking Points is produced by Besa Luci, Aulonë Kadriu and Gentiana Paçarizi.Music and sound mix by PUG musik. This episode was produced with the financial support of the National Endowment for Democracy.

“Hi, How Are You?”—episode eleven from The Tale and the Tongue series—arises from a conversation with Era Qena, an enthusiastic storyteller. Era is currently an active member of the social centre Termokiss in Prishtina. She was also part of the team of the European nomadic biennial Manifesta14, which took place between July and October 2022 in the capital of Kosovo, where Era Qena and Sonia Fernández Pan first met. The words “hi, how are you” came up a few times during their conversation, connecting to basic forms of hospitality and mutual care. This seemingly simple question is not always easy to answer. In some texts Sonia read about Kosovo and Prishtina, the notion of hospitality was a constant. Era would refer to an ancient book where hospitality already appears as a set of rules and principles. Far from written or spoken rules, conversations and shared stories are a place where hospitality can also happen. The conversation for this podcast episode took place in October 2022. Sonia and Era started talking about the difficulty of owning your own place when you are very young. Half of Kosovo's population is under thirty years old. In addition there are the severe limitations imposed by the EU on Kosovars, who need a visa to travel to other states. This reconnects with imbalances in hospitality: when it happens on the one side but not on the other. The conversation however led also to other directions: to private spaces with public uses, to Termokiss and its influence on other projects and social structures, to taking care of street dogs, to relationships in digital times, to the many lives that appear in one's own... For the question “how are you” is both a personal and collective one.

He was a former commander in the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) which fought for independence from Serbia and was twice acquitted under former proceedings in The Hague. With his governing coalition split, he sparked a trade war with Serbia and Bosnia and Herzogovina a year ago, by introducing a 100 per cent tariff on goods, stalling any political progress.Mr. Tanin said that the elections had been “assessed positively” by international observers, although there had been cases of voter intimidation and campaign finance violations in the Serb-majority areas.Overall turnout in Sunday’s election was 44% of the 1.9 million registered voters, which represents the highest turnout since 2010.Vetëvendosje (VV) on 25.5% of the vote, slightly ahead of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) on 24.8%.While the final votes were still being counted on election night, VV’s party leader, Albin Kurti, declared victory, saying that the result was a “national celebration,” ahead of a celebration with supporters in Prishtina’s Skanderbeg Square. The Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK), which has been in government since 2007, has received 21.2% and has conceded that it looks set for a period in opposition. “Citizens have given their verdict and we accept it,” said party leader Kadri Veseli. The coalition between outgoing Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj’s party, Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK), and the Social Democratic Party (PSD) is in fourth place on 11.6%.### 2019 Polish parliamentary electionhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_Polish_parliamentary_electionThe PiS lost their Senate majority but they're contesting a lot of the races they lost as being invalid... and they recently made a change to who adjudicates election validity...https://euobserver.com/opinion/145498?utm_source=euobs&utm_medium=rssThe Polish Supreme court has already ruled out 3/6 requests thought -https://www.reuters.com/article/us-poland-election-recount/polish-supreme-court-rejects-vote-recount-bid-by-ruling-nationalists-idUSKBN1X8187https://www.reuters.com/article/us-poland-election-recount/polish-court-rejects-two-more-government-recount-bids-idUSKBN1X919ZOddly they say the reason for the recounts isn't valid:“The purpose of an electoral protest,” the court said in a statement, “is to point out specific violations of law affecting the outcome of the election...not to recalculate votes because of the slight difference between individual candidates.”### Swiss federal electionhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_Swiss_federal_electionThe main story from this is that as with most Swiss elections not much will change. The Greens gained a lot of seats but because of the way the Federal Council (their executive) is elected they won't get into that. DW's podcast in an interview with their Swiss correspondent pointed out there's a convention not to let someone in until they've done well a couple of elections in a row... so slow moving it is.https://www.dw.com/en/greens-surge-in-swiss-elections-as-voters-climate-concerns-grow/a-50903915?maca=en-rss-en-all-1573-rdfhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Council_(Switzerland)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_formula

For victims of wartime sexual violence, the relationship between silence and visibility is tricky. Survivors must bear witness, not only for themselves but for history. And yet too often their experience is adopted and used. This has been the case of the women of Kosovo, whose bodies are seen as embodying the nation and whose suffering is recast as national heroism. Sexual violence is not a side effect of war. It’s a means of war. And if you study the intersection of public policy, social justice, and wartime sexual violence as an academic, it’s hard not to be an activist, too. Our guests include Michael Kennedy, professor of sociology at Brown University and the author of Globalizing Knowledge: Intellectuals, Universities, and Publics in Transformation, and Albanian sociologist Linda Gusia, chair of the Program in Gender Studies and Research at University of Prishtina.

"If my grandmother knows Kosovo is a country… everyone knows Kosovo is a country"  Flekitza repeats in an attempt to help me understand what is going on in the Serbian community of Kosovo.  In her home city in Kosovo, public school teachers get pay checks from the Serbian government, which are substantially larger the the salary Kosovo pays them.  A confusing situation that you'll hear me get lost in several times as Flekitza explains how even her university diploma is now considered worthless, as jobs do not recognize what was then officially a Serbian University. The list of obstacles would be enough to make a person quit and run off to a country where things make more sense, but instead she is dedicated to making a life in Prishtina, together with her Albanian partner. A Serbian-Albanian-Kosovar love story that many people, including family, are not willing to accept.  "Who cares what people think.. I certainly don't"…. in this podcast I spend time getting to know Flekitza's story, her family, her problems as an ethnic Serbian of struggling Kosovo, and her love of radio.  An extra-ordinary individual living in some mind-boggling circumstances.
