Swamps and the French language put up barriers to globalization in Acadiana for generations. At least that's the conventional narrative. Even within our own community, we often underestimate just how wide the cultural landscape is in South Louisiana and has always been.  Barriers persist. But there are lots of creative, thoughtful people chiseling away at them and mining for a common heritage.  It's not limited to art and cultural anthropology. Lafayette has explored international touchstones for decades through big events like Festival International and the Latin Music Festival.  Cristina Martinez is in the business of expanding those horizons. She's been an event planner in Lafayette for six years, managing projects big and small for Party Central and has hosted the Latin Music Festival herself. She's also a media personality, moonlighting as the host of After Hours with Cristina Martinez, a Facebook Live show about sex, sexuality and sexual health.  During the pandemic, Cristina stepped up as a daily reporter for El Sabor/Telemundo, translating press conferences and Covid information for Acadiana's rapidly growing Hispanic community. Cristina was born in Puerto Rico and has lived in Lafayette since 2008. What does it mean to be from somewhere anyway? Home is an idea  Olivia Perillo has explored in documentaries and photography. Since childhood, she's been enamored of the connection between Acadiana's swamps and the deserts of West Texas, where she spent time on trips to visit her mother's family.  Olivia and her creative partner have produced two documentaries over the last couple of years. Migration, which profiled women leaving their birthplaces in search of new homes. And Intention which profiled the diversity of Louisiana cultural traditions among women. Olivia's work on Intention was funded by a Create Louisiana grant, and her films have been screened internationally. Before any companies moved into the new World Trade Center towers, a small group of artists set up makeshift studios in raw space overlooking the site. From this rare perch, they began to capture and document the massive construction project below. These artists tell their personal stories of passion, hope, renewal and perseverance from their studios in the sky, and the important role that art and creativity continues to play in Lower Manhattan.

You may have heard people say ‘Food is my LOVE LANGUAGE,' meaning that cooking and feeding others is their way of saying, "I Love you" in the most nurturing and generous way possible.  In this episode Cristina talks with two chefs who speak the language fluently. First she and Chef Vikas Khanna discuss how Vikas expresses himself either in person, in his Michelin Star restaurants or through service with his Feed India Initiative, which has fed over 50 million Indians who have struggled in Covid, all from his home office in New York. In episode four, we talk to Sarah Thompson. A culinary school attendee, who like a lot of our guests, has worked in multiple roles in restaurants and coffeeshops. She learned how to brew beer before heading off to New Zealand for a year to learn charcuterie. Since she's been back in the states, Sarah has been putting together all that she has learned under the moniker, Tall Poppy Projects, making delicious, mouthwatering, fatty biscuits and bagels and so much more. We talk about reciprocal collaboration within and outside of the food world and how personal history can inspire your goals. This conversation with Sarah gave us a larger view of how service workers are treated in other countries - like New Zealand - where Sarah worked for several years. But also that while people are provided better job security and better wages, it doesn't mean those countries aren't still problematic in their wealth distribution or their treatment of native people, immigrants, and people of color. We also touch on Adesola's favorite concept to shit on fusion food (read, most hated concept). How it is often synonymous with cultural appropriation and how prevalent that is in Philadelphia's restaurant scene. We dive into the controversy over Mission Taqueria's team of chefs uninvitedly inspecting the kitchen and questioning the head chef and owner of South Philly Barbacoa, Cristina Martinez and then copying her barbacoa recipe for their restaurant. Head chef and owner of South Philly Barbacoa, Cristina Martinez wrote about the experience in 2016 of the controversy over Mission Taqueria's team of chefs copying her barbacoa recipe for their restaurant. in an article called “Don't Call It Barbacoa” Eater has an article about the same controversy Sarah talked about the persisting racism that exists in places where people believe the concept has been wiped out. Cristina Martinez is an undocumented Mexican immigrant who came to America in order to pay for her daughter's college tuition. While working at a restaurant in Philadelphia, she met fellow cook Ben Miller. The pair fell in love and when Cristina came forward about her illegal status to the restaurant owners, she was fired. After years of hard work, Cristina and Ben opened South Philly Barbacoa, with Cristina at the helm cooking the food she grew up with in her native Mexico.
