Today, we're diving deep into the story of an icon whose voice etched a permanent mark on the soul of R&B music. This is the tale of Aaliyah - the Princess of R&B.Born Aaliyah Dana Haughton on January 16, 1979, in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Aaliyah was destined for stardom from a young age. Her smooth, sultry voice, combined with her undeniable charisma, set her on a path that would change the music industry forever.Aaliyah's journey into the spotlight began on the popular TV show "Star Search," where she captured hearts with her voice, even as a child. But it was her uncle, Barry Hankerson, and his ties to the music industry that introduced her to the producer who would help shape her sound - R. Kelly. Together, they released Aaliyah's debut album, "Age Ain't Nothing but a Number," in 1994, which was a commercial success, thanks to hits like "Back & Forth" and the title track itself. However, her career was not without controversy, including rumors of a marriage to R. Kelly, which both parties denied.Not to be defined by controversy, Aaliyah's second album, "One in a Million," marked a significant evolution in her music and image. Teaming up with Missy Elliott and Timbaland, she created a sound that was futuristic and utterly irresistible. The album was a masterpiece, featuring classics like "If Your Girl Only Knew" and "4 Page Letter." Aaliyah's style—a blend of street-smart cool and elegant sophistication—became iconic, influencing a generation of artists.Aaliyah's foray into acting with roles in "Romeo Must Die" and the announcement of her casting in "The Matrix Reloaded" showed her versatility and ambition. Her third album, "Aaliyah," released in 2001, continued to showcase her growth as an artist, with hits like "Try Again" and "More Than a Woman."Tragically, Aaliyah's bright future was cut short. On August 25, 2001, she died in a plane crash in the Bahamas, leaving the world mourning the loss of a tremendous talent. Aaliyah was more than just a singer; she was a trendsetter, a pioneer, and a beloved figure in the music world.Her influence continues to be felt today, as modern artists cite her as a major inspiration. We meet our next guest, Michael Holtz, at a little Marriott in Knoxville. Michael's a Racine, Wisconsin native and moved down here to Knoxville many years ago so he's got strong Midwestern roots. His dad was a machinist, as was his grandfather. He had learned to read and write very early in age, so perhaps machinery was not in his future. In high school, he worked on the school's newspaper and that helped him land a job as an editor later on. What Michael never anticipated is that his writing would play a huge part in his story when he was diagnosed with cancer. Coincidentally enough, at the time he was working with the American Cancer Society, so he took it upon himself to deeply, and widely share his personal story. Michael is also a survivor of sexual abuse, and his sharing of that experience is an extremely powerful moment. We also talked about his relationship with his father and grandfather, and how forgiveness led him to write a 19 page letter to his father, and leave it at his gravesite.
