The Islamic State-Khorasan is forging a reputation for ferocious terrorist violence. Its gunmen massacred 137 people at a Moscow concert hall in March. In January, the group's jihadists slaughtered dozens at a memorial service in Iran. In August 2021, ISIS-K was behind the suicide bombing at the Kabul airport that killed 13 U.S. soldiers and 170 Afghan civilians. Who are these guys? Who is their leader? And what does ISIS-K aim to accomplish by committing spectacular acts of terrorism far from its home base in Afghanistan. In this episode, New America vice president and CNN national security analyst Peter Bergen discuss the group's origins, motives, ideas, and goals.
With the recent attack on Moscow, I received some requests to do a breakdown on the geopolitics of ISIS. First things first, there are two largely unaffiliated groups at play here – ISIS-Khorasan and the more widely known, ISIS. Program publiceret i DR Lyd d. 28/3.
This week on Rational Security, Alan and Quinta were joined again by Lawfare Managing Editor Tyler McBrien and Lawfare Foreign Policy Editor Daniel Byman—also of Georgetown University and the Center for Strategic and International Studies— to talk over the week's national security news, including:“Terror in Moscow.” On Friday, March 22, a group of gunmen unleashed an attack on a concert hall outside Moscow that killed over 130 people, shooting into a crowd of concertgoers before setting the hall on fire. The Islamic State in Khorasan, the Afghanistan branch of ISIS known as ISIS-K, quickly claimed credit for the attack, and Russian authorities have arrested four suspects. The Kremlin, without evidence, has also continued to hint that Ukraine is somehow responsible. What does the attack tell us about ISIS-K, and what does it mean for the Russian government?“April, Come She Will.” After a brief delay, Donald Trump's hush money trial in Manhattan has been scheduled to begin on April 15—the first of Trump's criminal cases to go to trial. Meanwhile, a New York appeals court threw Trump a lifeline, reducing his appeal bond in the civil fraud case against him from half a billion dollars to $175 million. Will ol' Donny Trump be able to wriggle out of this jam once again?“Come On, Aileen.” Judge Aileen Cannon is at it again down in Fort Pierce, Florida. As she presides over Trump's classified documents case, motions are piling up on her desk without any sign of a ruling, and she issued a strange, convoluted order instructing both parties to “engage with” potential jury instructions reflecting unusual readings of the Presidential Records Act in relation to the Espionage Act. Just what is Judge Cannon doing? And how, if at all, can Jack Smith respond? For object lessons, Alan endorsed the podcast “Next Year in Moscow,” on Russians living in exile who departed their country after the beginning of Putin's war with Ukraine. Tyler sang the praises of Waxahatchee's new album “Tigers Blood.” And Quinta recommended a reflection on Baltimore's collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/lawfare. //The Wire Weekly Rollup//March 24-30, 2024//-----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-France: Authorities have increased the terror alert to its maximum level following the continual assessment of an increased likelihood of terrorism. Though authorities have not revealed any specific threat (beyond the violent attacks France experiences on a daily basis), the opening ceremonies for the Olympic games have been closed to tourists. Event officials are also considering closing the opening ceremonies altogether due to the security threats.Russia: Details continue to emerge following the Crocus City Hall music venue shooting last week. All four shooters have been arrested, along with a handful of other individuals accused of complicity in the attack. -HomeFront-Maryland: The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed after the M/V DALI collided with a support pylon after an unknown mechanical issue caused the vessel to deviate from her course. Details regarding the specifics of the incident have largely not been made public due to the ongoing investigation. The M/V DALI remains impaled on the bridge debris, which has caused Baltimore Harbor to be cut off from the outside world, stranding four major Military Sealift Command (MSC) ships in the harbor for the foreseeable future. Initial estimates have indicated that the bridge will take approximately 10 years to rebuild, despite only taking 5 years to build originally in 1972.Texas: Outrage continues following the revelation of clauses within the latest trillion dollar omnibus spending bill, which have mandated the federal tracking of all beef cattle in the United States.New York: City officials have announced the implementation of metal detectors in the subway system. These detectors will augment the existing military checkpoints currently in place throughout the subway system, and will be installed over the next few weeks.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: To the unknowing citizen, the excuse of ISIS-K being responsible for the Moscow attack may seem as plausible as any other theory. However, those who have field experience combatting ISIS-K may assess that the chance that ISIS-K was responsible for this attack is nearly zero. The following are a few indicators that suggest the official story, spread throughout western Europe, the United States, and even Russia, is a lie.At this point, most media outlets claim that ISIS-K has claimed responsibility for the attack. Russian President Vladimir Putin has also blamed “radical Islamists” for the attack, though not going so far as to name a specific group. The Khorasan-derived ISIS offshoot has largely declined over the past few years for many reasons. Whereas the traditional Islamic State organization has roots in Iraq and Syria, the Khorasan splinter group known as ISIS-K is a completely different organization in practice. Largely being confined to the far-reaches of eastern Afghanistan as well as the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) of Pakistan, as recently as 2019 ISIS-K was on its way out as an organization. Numbering only a few hundred members, and taking refuge in the Tora Bora mountains (of Bin Laden fame), ISIS-K had lost so much influence that even attacks in Jalalabad were very rare. Taliban forces were at war with ISIS-K deep in the mountains, and on many occasions the United States undertook operations to target ISIS-K with the assumption that the Taliban would then move in and occupy the terrain. This was quietly the de facto policy for many years. In fact, diplomatic relations soured at the 2019 peace negotiations in Doha in response to a few high-profile instances where conventional American forces killed a few relatives of senior Taliban leadership, rather than ISIS-K. As such, the ability for ISIS-K to conduct operations outside of Afghanistan is extremely remote, especially considering that the

Russians are mourning after the worst terrorist attack in the country in two decades. More than 130 people died when gunmen opened fire at a concert hall on Moscow's outskirts on Friday night. It's a major security lapse, but will it cause more Russians to doubt Vladimir Putin's leadership? We'll also explain why the Islamic State group that's claimed responsibility for the attack would want to strike Russia.

Nader Shah was not born to rule. He was poor, the son of a shepherd in a semi-nomadic tribe, and had no connection to the throne. But he was physically impressive; he stood over six feet tall, had dark piercing eyes, and a voice so loud that it is said to have caused his enemies to flee. He also innately understood warfare and it was in the military where he started to make a name for himself. Step-by-step, this poor shepherd from Khorasan accumulated power and influence. Before long he overthrew the last of the Safavids and ruled over all of Persia, but he did not stop there. He went on to push back the Ottomans, win many victories in Central Asia, and, most notoriously, sack Delhi, carting off the Peacock Throne, the Koh-i-Noor and eight thousand wagons of bejeweled loot. Listen as William and Anita discuss the life of Nader Shah, dubbed by some as the Napoleon of Persia. fWotD Episode 2420: Tolui Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Wednesday, 20 December 2023 is Tolui.Tolui (c. 1191–1232) was the youngest son of Temüjin, the founder of the Mongol Empire under the title Genghis Khan, and his first wife Börte. A prominent general during the early Mongol conquests, Tolui was a leading candidate to succeed his father after his death in 1227 and ultimately served as regent until the accession of his brother Ögedei two years later. Tolui's wife was Sorghaghtani Beki; their sons included Möngke and Kublai, the fourth and fifth khagans of the empire, and Hulagu, the founder of the Ilkhanate.Tolui was less active than his elder brothers Jochi, Chagatai, and Ögedei during their father's rise to power, but once he reached adulthood he was considered the finest warrior of the four. He commanded armies under his father during the first invasion of Jin China (1211–1215), and his distinguished service during the Mongol invasion of the Khwarazmian Empire secured his reputation. After the fall of the cities of Transoxiana in 1220, Genghis dispatched Tolui early the following year to subjugate the region of Khorasan, which had begun to cause trouble for the Mongol armies. Tolui executed his orders with ruthless efficiency, assaulting the major cities of Merv, Nishapur, and Herat, and subjugating numerous others. Medieval chroniclers attributed more than three million deaths to the massacres he ordered at Nishapur and Merv; while these figures are considered exaggerated by modern historians, they are evidence of the abnormal brutality of Tolui's campaign. As the Mongols' traditional inheritance system was a form of ultimogeniture, Tolui was always a leading candidate to succeed his father. His position was strengthened by the elimination of Jochi and Chagatai, on account of possible illegitimacy and excessive arrogance respectively. Genghis eventually passed Tolui over in favour of Ögedei, who was known for his generosity. Tolui was on his father's last campaign when the latter died in mid-1227; as the youngest son, he became regent, in charge of his father's burial and the administration of the nation. It is possible that the two-year interregnum was lengthened by Tolui's desire to become khan himself; he nevertheless eventually swore allegiance to Ögedei, who was crowned in 1229.Tolui accompanied Ögedei after the resumption of warfare against the Jin dynasty in 1230. The campaign was successful and they returned home to Mongolia two years later. That year, Tolui died in unclear circumstances. The official record was that he died during a shamanic ritual while saving Ögedei from a curse; alternative theories suggest that he died from alcoholism or that Ögedei had him poisoned. Having taken over Tolui's lands and estates after his death, Sorghaghtani amassed enough wealth and supporters to ensure that her son Möngke took power in 1251, after the death of Ögedei's son Güyük.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:24 UTC on Wednesday, 20 December 2023.For the full current version of the article, see Tolui on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Matthew Standard.
The Dabuyid Dynasty, otherwise known as the Gaubarid Dynasty, was an Iranian Zoroastrian Dynasty ruled by a group of independent kings, called Ispahbads. Most of what is known about the Dabuyid Dynasty is from the later historian Ibn Isfandiyar's Tarikh-I Tabaristan, written in the 13th Century. Although the dynasty was founded by Gil Gavbara in 642 CE, it was named after his son, Dabuya, who controlled the kingdom after his father's death. Dabuyid rule extended over Tabaristan and western Khorasan until the Abbasid conquest in 760. The dynasty ended with the suicide of Khurshid after a surprise invasion by the Abbasid Caliphate. Shaikh Abu Saeed Abil Kheir (Abu Saeed Mubarak Makhzoomi) (967 - 1049 CE) was a famous Persian Sufi and poet who contributed extensively to the evolution of Sufi tradition. Referring to himself as "nobody, son of nobody" he expressed the reality that his life had disappeared in the heart of God. This revered Persian Sufi mystic from Khorasan preceded the great poet Jalaluddin Rumi by over two hundred years on the same path of annihilation in Love.
Following the exit of US forces in 2021, the Taliban rolled back into power almost immediately. They promised that they had learnt from previous mistakes and did not want to minimalize the role of women. However, little over 18 months later and the Taliban have just announced that women were now banned from the universities and working for NGO's, just the latest in a succession of repressive policies aimed at women. Furthermore, Afghanistan still has an insurgency problem. The Islamic State of Khorasan, or IS-K, formed in 2016 following disaffected Taliban members gaining inspiration from the gains maid by IS in both Iraq and Syria. They regard the Taliban as traitors and have their own desires that stretch far beyond the borders of Afghanistan. In the middle are Afghanistan's citizens who find themselves victims from all sides. The Taliban's focus on implementing Sharia law regardless of the impact has both all but erased women from society and left the economy in perilous state. Can the Taliban gain control of its own borders or does it need external help? And if so, does that offer a window to gain some leverage regarding human rights in the country? Find out as we ask, Can the Taliban tackle Afghanistan's terror problem? War A to Z▪️Abbasid Revolution▪️Date- 747 A.D. - 750 A.D.Location - Khorasan province IranParticipants - Umayyads vs AbbasidsKey Players - Caliph Marwan, Governor Nasir Ibn Sayyar, Muhammad Ali, Abu MuslimKey Battles - Merv, Nahavand, Isfahan, Mosul▪️The Issue - The powerful Umayyad Caliphate, the second of the original four in early Islamic history, had a rocky relationship with its many subjects. The Umayyads were an Arab dynasty but could prove no direct relationship or bloodline to the Prophet's family, and they had a willingness to tax all subjects at very high rates, Arab and non-Arab alike. Because they treated Arabs better than anyone, and should no preference for non-Arab muslims, the Umayyad's had few friends in their lands. Some of the more discriminatory policies led to unrest and two leaders started to form an opposition party; Muhammad Ibn Ali, who could boast a blood tie to the Prophet and Abu Muslim, an Iranian leader that gave voice to the over taxed non-Arab and non-muslims. Wearing black and touting a black flag, mirroring the Prophets own battle flag, the Abbasids began their revolution in 745.▪️The Result - The ensuing five years saw dozens of battles, from Merv to Nahavand, Isfahan to Mosul. The Abbasid forces crippled the Umayyad power structure and forced the governor of Khorasan to flee from city to city until at last he died in 748 A.D. The ignominious death of Governor Sayyar was to be repeated by the Caliph himself. As Abu Muslim's forces marched on Harrran, Caliph Marwan ran for safety making it all the way to Egypt. Unfortunately for him, Marwan didn't live long in the land of the pharaohs, he was murdered in 750 A.D. The resulting power vacuum caused by the Umayyad collapse allowed Abu Muslim to roll up Syria, Iraq, and Iran into the Abbasid Empire. A legitimate Islamic government was installed and tax laws and revenues regulated by the ruling Muslim dynasty. Abu al-Abbas was chosen as their first caliph and he ruled from the new capital of the Islamic world - Baghdad.▪️Rate/Review/Subscribe▪️Source - MacGill's Military History
This is a public episode. The much anticipated sequel to the breathtaking New York Times bestseller THE WRATH AND THE DAWN. I am surrounded on all sides by a desert. A guest, in a prison of sand and sun. My family is here. And I do not know whom I can trust. In a land on the brink of war, Shahrzad has been torn from the love of her husband Khalid, the Caliph of Khorasan. She once believed him a monster, but his secrets revealed a man tormented by guilt and a powerful curse-one that might keep them apart forever. Reunited with her family, who have taken refuge with enemies of Khalid, and Tariq, her childhood sweetheart, she should be happy. But Tariq now commands forces set on destroying Khalid's empire. Shahrzad is almost a prisoner caught between loyalties to people she loves. But she refuses to be a pawn and devises a plan. While her father, Jahandar, continues to play with magical forces he doesn't yet understand, Shahrzad tries to uncover powers that may lie dormant within her. With the help of a tattered old carpet and a tempestuous but sage young man, Shahrzad will attempt to break the curse and reunite with her one true love.
One of Time magazine's 100 best fantasy books of all time. A number one New York Times best seller and a sumptuous epic tale inspired by A Thousand and One Nights. Every dawn brings horror to a different family in a land ruled by a killer. Khalid, the 18-year-old Caliph of Khorasan, takes a new bride each night, only to have her executed at sunrise. So it is a terrible surprise when 16-year-old Shahrzad volunteers to marry Khalid. But she does so with a clever plan to stay alive and exact revenge on the Caliph for the murder of her best friend and countless other girls. Shazi's wit and will get her through to the dawn that no others have seen, but with a catch...she may be falling in love with a murderer. Shazi discovers that the villainous boy-king is not all that he seems and neither are the deaths of so many girls. It's up to her to uncover the reason for the murders and to break the cycle once and for all. So you would have me throw Shazi to the wolves? Shazi? Honestly, I pity the wolves.
The latest episode of the COVID-19 subseries of The Appropriate Omnivore focuses on baking. While sheltering at home, many have learned to bake during the pandemic. Even better, many are baking sourdough and using ancient grains. So Aaron Zober brings on Montana farmer Bob Quinn, who introduced the ancient wheat known as khorasan to the world and trademarked it as KAMUT. Bob gets into the problems modern wheat has which makes it unable to digest it for many. He then discusses KAMUT's practices to produce healthy and sustainable grains. KAMUT is not only organic, but also uses regenerative agriculture. Bob then mentions the various brands which use KAMUT. Aaron brings up how he loves the Eden Foods KAMUT pasta. In addition to KAMUT, Bob Quinn sells a cold pressed organic safflower oil under the name The Oil Barn. Bob explains the advantages of safflower oil and why it needs to be cold pressed. Bob also lets the listeners know what bakeries we can find in Montana with KAMUT baked goods. Aaron ends the program having Bob talk about some KAMUT products available overseas which he'd like to see available in the United States.
narrated by Chris Gratien featuring Joshua White, Zoe Griffith, Sara Nur Yıldız, and Neelam Khoja | The Mongol conquests of the 13th century were an unprecedented event. Not since the Islamic conquests of the 7th and 8th centuries had such a rapid political rise occurred. For a time, Mongol successor states controlled most of Asia. And though many of these dynasties would not last, the lasting consequences of the Mongol Empire would be many. In this episode, we study the consequences of the Mongol period for the Islamic world, focusing both on the immediate destructive impacts that appear in the Islamic sources from the period as well as the lasting transformations introduced by Mongol rule. Whether in terms of political ideology, law, trade, or culture, the Mongol period represented a significant departure for Muslim societies east of Egypt. In addition to highlighting the impacts of the Mongols in former Seljuk domains of Iran and Anatolia, we discuss the rise of the Timurid dynasty in Khorasan and foreshadow its legacy for South Asia. « Click for More »
