Join us for Hammer's Hands of the Ripper, a 1971 British horror film released as the second half of a double feature with Twins of Evil. Directed by Peter Sasdy, produced by Aida Young, and written by L.W. Davidson from a story by Edward Spencer Shew. Making good use of the large Baker Street set at Pinewood Studios—left over from The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes—the production was denied permission to film its final scenes at St. Paul's Cathedral, so a replica was constructed instead. If the Pritchards' home and staircase look familiar, it's because Hammer's ever-resourceful set designers reused elements from The Curse of Frankenstein years earlier (see episode 2 of our podcast for more on that classic). Director Peter Sasdy, who cited Hands of the Ripper as his favourite film, also directed the original Adrian Mole TV series (both The Secret Diary and The Growing Pains), three episodes of Hammer House of Horror, and two other Hammer features: Countess Dracula and Taste the Blood of Dracula (the latter coming to the podcast later this year, hopefully). Most monumentally, he directed the legendary BBC sci-fi thriller The Stone Tape (definitely check General Witchfinders number 5—our third most popular episode to date!). Eric Porter stars as Doctor Pritchard. Renowned for his work in film, television, and theatre, he famously played Professor Moriarty opposite Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes and Soames Forsyte in The Forsyte Saga. Angharad Rees plays Anna, the daughter of the Ripper. She appeared in Boon (take a drink), starred as Demelza in 28 episodes of Poldark, and, the year after Hands of the Ripper, featured in Under Milk Wood alongside Richard Burton, Peter O'Toole, and Elizabeth Taylor. She was made a Fellow of the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, had a pub named after her in Pontypridd (sadly now a card shop), and founded a Knightsbridge jewellery company, Angharad. Pieces she designed were featured in Elizabeth: The Golden Age. Wikipedia also notes she was once in a relationship with Alan Bates, which we mention only to plug episode 35, where we talked about The Shout.Lynda "Nurse Gladys Emmanuel" Baron appears as Long Liz—a curious name choice considering Long Liz was an actual canonical Ripper victim. Here, she's depicted alive and well (at least initially), years after Saucy Jack's supposed demise. Baron appeared as a recurring character in both Coronation Street and EastEnders, and played three different characters in Doctor Who across three Doctors.Dora Bryan turns up as Mrs Golding, one of two clairvoyants in the film. You may know her from 50 episodes of Last of the Summer Wine, Boon (drink), or as Helen in A Taste of Honey (written by Jon's mum's mate Shelagh Delaney). She (Dora, not Shelagh) also appeared in both a Carry On and a St Trinian's.Lastly, Norman Bird pops up as the Police Inspector. If he looks familiar, it's because he had over 200 TV and 60 film roles. He was in Spywatch (as Mr Jenkins), Boon (drink), Woof!, Whack-O!, and Help! (with Stephen Mangan). He also did a stint in Jim Davidson's Up the Elephant and Round the Castle—only mentioned because Ross was convinced it was alongside Marina Sirtis, but IMDb says she was in just one episode?Anyway, back to Norman Bird. He appeared in The Adventure Game, Whistle Down the Wind, Steptoe and Son, Fawlty Towers, Please Sir!, and The Medusa Touch (on our long list since day one). He was Mr Braithwaite, the farmer, in Worzel Gummidge and voiced Bilbo in the 1978 Ralph Bakshi Lord of the Rings. Happy Hammerween! Today, Ian and AC close out Spooky Season and Scare-a-Thon 2024 with a look at Peter Sasdy's 1971 psychological slasher, Hands of the Ripper!Eric Porter stars as Dr. Pritchard, an early 20th Century doctor whose interest in the "new" field of Freudian psychoanalysis leads him to care for a young woman named Anna (Angharad Rees). As a toddler, she'd witnessed the slaying of her mother at the hands of Jack the Ripper, and has now succumbed to violent episodes triggered by her past. Blackmail, bedside manner, and bloody murder come to a jaw-dropping head in this surprising late-era Hammer entry. In this spoilerific episode, the guys talk about the power of minimalistic storytelling; a startling (and admittedly stupid) connection between Jack the Ripper and Three's Company; and respond to some rather pointed comments from last month's The Lost Continent episode!Because it's October, the annual Scare-a-Thon is in full swing! There are over 400,000 children in U.S. foster care and 350,000 churches in the U.S. If every church had someone in it who would adopt one child, we could solve this problem. During this Episode of the podcast, pastor Alex has a conversation with his old friend Eric Porter, the CEO and founder of Backyard Orphans. James 1:27 says, “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this, to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” Backyard Orphans guides church leaders to develop a foster care, adoption, and support ministry. Alex Bryant Ministries is focused on helping people be reconciled to God, then within one's own self, and finally being reconciled to our fellow man in order to become disciples. Eric Porter, the author of "A People's History of SFO," sees the nation's No. 1 ranked large airport, San Francisco International, as a metaphor for the Bay Area. He explores how SFO and other airports mirror their cities' art, culture, and values. While emphasizing the significant role public art plays in enhancing the airport experience, he explains how just observing people at any airport reveals much about the community, its workforce, and class structure.

What can an airport tell us about a city? Quite a bit, according to UC-Santa Cruz history professor Eric Porter in A People's History of SFO: The Making of the Bay Area and an Airport (University of California Press, 2023). San Francisco's SFO airport has been reshaping the Bay Area's politics and reflecting the region's inequalities since its founding in 1927, Porter argues. From the dispossessed Native land on which it was built, to the class dynamics shaping airport noise and amenities, to the airport's mid-century racist hiring practices, the facility served as a microcosm of Bay Area problems, promise, and growth. Even in recent years, with the airport serving as a site for pro-immigrant activism during the Trump era, SFO continues to be a symbol for the city s a whole. As sea level rises threaten to swamp the runways, the airport's future is uncertain, but its past is a useful lens for viewing western urban history in the twentieth century.  Dr. Stephen R. Dr. Stephen R. First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on November 27th 2022 In the early 1980s, GRANADA TELEVISION produced what is widely considered to be one of the all-time masterpieces of British Television Drama series, much of it filmed on location in India, and which went on to be sold all around the world as an example of the very finest of the kind of television series that British television could produce, although, like many older programmes, it is a series that is often overlooked in more recent polls of the greatest television series ever made, partly because it is based in an era that history is turning out to be far less comfortable with than it used to be, and partly because more recent shows do have a habit of making the modern audience forget pretty much everything that preceded it ever existed. We've talked before about some of the notable absences on those kinds of lists on earlier editions of VISION ON SOUND, and I'm often reminded of the DVD packaging on a certain highly regarded and popular, but otherwise fairly average, TV series which claimed THIS IS ABOUT AS GOOD AS BRITISH TELEVISION GETS! and wickedly thinking to myself “Oh that's a shame!”, so here on VISION ON SOUND we like to think that we're doing our own little bit to restore the reputation of certain television gems, and just remind the viewing public of one or two excellent programmes that they might largely just have forgotten all about. First broadcast between January and April 1984 THE JEWEL IN THE CROWN tells the story of the last few years of British Rule in India, taking place both during, and just after the Second World War, and stars a whole host of then-emerging television talents including ART MALIK, GERALDINE JAMES, TIM PIGOTT-SMITH, and CHARLES DANCE, playing alongside such names as SAEED JAFFREY, ERIC PORTER and PEGGY ASHCROFT to create an epic fourteen-part, thirteen-and-a-half hour television series based upon the four books making up what is known as THE RAJ QUARTET which were written by PAUL SCOTT between 1965 and 1975. Because he very much enjoyed watching the series on its first transmission nearly four decades ago, my occasional co-host SANDY McGREGOR has recently been re-watching the series, and so, this week, he returns, for once just on his own, to VISION ON SOUND to share his thoughts and observations upon this acknowledged television classic. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

Here's a bit about Eric from his team's website:"Trisha and I have been married since June 26, 1999. We have six kids Madison, Isaac, Robert, Kale, Kelsey, and Halle Jo. We had the joy of serving full time in student ministry from 2000 to 2012. We served for two years in the Dallas/Fort Worth area as youth pastors. Then we moved to Ozark, Missouri, and served as the junior high directors at James River Church for almost 10 years. In September of 2011, God called us out of local church ministry to become orphan care missionaries to equip churches to care for orphans. We moved back to the DFW area in August of 2012 to help create an orphan care strategy to take throughout Texas, the nation, and the world. From August 2012 until August 2017 we served as the assistant directors of The Keep. We are now the founders and presidents of Backyard Orphans. Backyard Orphans is a 501c3 interdenominational ministry focused on engaging and equipping the church to care for hurting children in their own backyard. Eric Porter is a professional mountain biker that I have worked with over the years in a variety of different ways. At the end of every year, he’s traditionally planning his trips for the new year, but just like so many of us in 2020, he had to change how he approached this past year. With cancelled trips, races and essentially all plans, he pivoted to focus on video production and ramped up his Youtube Channel - Porter MTB - over the past year. His goal throughout the year was reaching 100k follower and for him, he’s committed to turning out high quality videos, ensuring the videos he shares feature him authentically and that he’s connecting with his fans and followers. As we’ve all seen in 2020, we have to adjust to where our consumers are and how their behavior has shifted. Eric and his fellow athletes at Diamondback and other brands are practicing what they preach and providing authentic content that speaks to their followers. Listen to the full episode to hear how he reached - and exceeded - that 100k followers goal and what’s next to come for him!   Eric Porter is a father, fly fisherman, backcountry snowboarder, and Professional Mountain Biker. He grew up racing cross country mountain bikes, then switched to downhill and won Collegiate National Championships, and then switched to freeriding, where he was the first to grind handrails on a mountain bike. He spent the next 8 years on the World Slopestyle Tour and filming for big free ride videos, which piqued his interest in traveling the world. Since 2011 he has been on the forefront of mountain bike adventuring, riding his bike places no one else has been, and sharing those adventures with the world. He spends time on all of his bikes, from the road bike at home while training, to dirt jumping in his legendary backyard riding setup, to the XC bike for endurance and adventure racing, and mixing in a healthy dose of bikepacking as well. He is also trying hard to help as a public lands and trails advocate, volunteering as President of Wasatch Trails Foundation, helping to build and maintain multi-use trails in Utah.

Eric Porter has had quite a career as a mountain bike athlete. The highlights include being the first rider to grind handrails on a bike, competing in slopestyle for 8 years, then filming and traveling for multiple big free ride videos.   A few years ago, however, he reached a point where he asked himself what do I want to do? His career as a competing athlete was slowing down but he still had a burning passion for bikes and adventures.    In this episode, Eric shares how he re-branded himself, works with brands today and shares how he feels knowing his YouTube channel has helped countless other people share his love for mountain biking.    From the episode:   "When you find a sport that you love and you're able to go do it and get out of the real world and go ride a bike. It's the best feeling ever."   "As an athlete working with the marketing managers, one of my big things is - how do I make their job easier."   "It's not saying go buy this bike but creating a cool experience around the bike and connecting people. Trying to get the emotions out and get them to feel something. That's how you get the connection with a brand."   Follow Eric: @portermtb https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCnzDWHTbEE5UWd3WuQAX6zQ   Produced by: Port Side Productions www.portsidepro.com @backcountrymarketing @portsideproductions @coleheilborn

Since then, he's transitioned into adventure mountain biking, documenting his experiences around the world. In this conversation, Eric talks about losing all his teeth to BMX, trying to get into downhill mountain biking in the late 90s, and eventually pivoting to freeriding. He also talks about the challenges of shooting action sports on 16mm film before the days of digital cameras and lightweight equipment, and why he eventually decided to switch from competitive cycling to adventure riding and content creation.   Eric Porter found his love for bikes exploring his local trails as a kid in Louisville, Kentucky. Before long he was crowned the National Downhill and Slalom Champion in 2001. From there Eric launched a professional Freeride mountain bike career competing all over the world and pushing the boundaries of ride style in mountain bike films. These days, Eric lives in Midway, Utah with his wife and two young sons while working closely with Diamondback Bikes helping design and test many of their latest models on trails around the world, representing Clif Bar and Magura as a sponsored athlete, and helping drive local trail development as the vice president of the Wasatch Trail Alliance. As I think you’ll hear in this interview, what we admire most about Eric is that he truly lives to share the stoke. Whether it’s introducing his two sons to the mountain lifestyle he loves so much, or introducing people he meets to all aspects of cycling from mountain biking to road, gravel, bike packing and everything in between. So throw your earbuds in, head out for a ride, and listen to Eric’s incredible journey from a mountain biker to a true cyclist. This interview was recorded Live from the Buddy Pegs Media booth at the 2018 Sea Otter Classic in Monterey CA. We built this interview series from the title of our newest children’s picture book Taking The Lead that follows our animal characters along a journey to open a local bike shop and inspire their town to ride. We hope you enjoy these personal stories from bike industry executives, non-profit leaders, pro athletes, and families just like yours who are celebrating kids on bikes and inspiring families to get off the couch... and out for a ride. --- Purchase our books, and download the World of Buddy Pegs podcast so you can share the love of bicycling with the kids in your life. Visit your local bike shop, or visit us at BuddyPegs.com. Remember it’s the little moments that create big memories.

In a special series recorded at the London HQ of Blackout, the Talking Events podcast welcomed experts from the world of rigging to discuss several of the key topics set to affect the industry.  Plasa’s NRC Manager Paul Riddiford, Technical Director of Unusual Rigging Robin Elias, and veteran rigger & rigging trainer Eric Porter all joined host James Dickson to discuss the National Rigging Certificate and the forthcoming Rigging Conference. The 2016 edition will be the 7th time the conference has formed part of the PLASA show, which this year will be held at London’s Olympia. During the podcast, the guests discussed the merits of the National Rigging Certificate (NRC) and what it has brought to the profession since its introduction. They also discussed why it was brought in and the assessment process that riggers go through in order to gain the certificate.  The episode is the first of a three-part series that will look further into the world of rigging, including the new National Event Lifting Certificate (NELC) and the launch of a brand new national apprentice scheme for trainee riggers.
