The Lakers, though, have a golden opportunity to reset the narrative tonight against a terrible Detroit team, and Monday's result makes this game crucial for two reasons: With a game Thursday in OKC, the Lakers need this game to guarantee a .500 trip, and not lose the solid impact of Saturday's excellent effort in Cleveland. One really good way to amplify the concerns about deeper issues inside the team? Lose to a Pistons squad that hasn't won since before Halloween. We're not at panic territory yet. Or even close, really. But you don't want to edge anywhere near it, particularly when it comes to things that generate drama. Because lose tonight, lose tomorrow? Particularly down the stretch, the legs and movement weren't really there and the Lakers had no real Plan B. So once again, bad late game execution turned a winnable game, one the Lakers were up huge in the first quarter, into a frustrating loss.116-111 was the final.The final five minutes were again a tire fire, featuring a parade of late-clock three-pointers and precious few actual points. Meanwhile, Sacramento, playing without star center Domantas Sabonis, found ways to get critical buckets when they were needed, whether from De'Aaron Fox (who routinely torches the Lakers these days) or Harrison Barnes (who wasn't efficient, but had a critical and-one along with a couple timely triples).After the game, Darvin Ham seemed conflicted. His default is to support his guys, to be optimistic, to talk about what was encouraging. He also seemed frustrated by their inability to pull out these "could have won" games. The last several days have not been kind to the Lakers. They've yet to win a preseason game. Trevor Ariza is out indefinitely after ankle surgery. Malik Monk is sidelined (albeit hopefully not for long) with a groin issue. And then came Monday's news that Talen Horton Tucker will require surgery to repair torn ligaments in his thumb. It's not yet known how long the recovery will take, but it goes without saying that the Lakers will be without their emerging young player for a sizable period.Beyond the loss of THT's individual skills, the Lakers are extremely low on dudes who could conceivably (much less credibly) play small forward. It's basically now LeBron James, Kent Bazemore... and crickets. This was already a thin position on the roster, but Rob Pelinka seemed content to keep the fifteenth roster spot open, rather than add some depth, Now that feels damn near impossible to justify. Whether James Ennis, Wes Matthews or whoever, the Lakers need a live body who can credibly play 10-15 minutes at the spot.On the positive side, Tuesday's preseason game against the Warriors should finally feature the long-awaited preseason debuts of LeBron, Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook as a trio.
