The Advanced Placement exams represent some of the most challenging subject-specific standardized tests a high schooler might ever take, and AP Precalculus is no exception. Amy and Mike believe that every test warrants smart, serious preparation, so we invited educator Joey Lin to share valuable strategies, insights, and resources for getting ready for the AP Precalculus exam.  What are five things you will learn in this episode? What is tested on the AP Precalculus exam? How do students score points on the AP Precalculus exam? What are the highest priority topics on the test? How should students prepare for the AP Precalculus exam? What are the best prep materials for AP Precalculus? MEET OUR GUEST Joey Lin's journey in test preparation and college admissions began in 2005 when he landed a job with Kaplan. From that moment, he was hooked on helping students navigate the pre-college process. Over the years, he has worked with a range of institutions, including Preply, PrepExpert, Northwestern University's Office of Admissions, and the University of California Office of Admissions. At Thinque Prep, Joey has dedicated himself to delivering comprehensive and results-driven programs. Whether guiding students through the SAT and ACT, leading AP exam prep courses, or providing strategic college counseling, his mission remains the same: to equip students with the skills and confidence they need to succeed. Although his career has expanded in many directions, Joey still finds joy in teaching AP content—especially math and physics, the subjects he loved most as a high schooler. Beyond test prep, Joey is deeply committed to mentorship and education reform. He frequently hosts webinars, workshops, and live sessions, providing students and parents with the knowledge they need to navigate the competitive admissions landscape successfully. Politicians rarely weigh in on what students are taught in school and usually act from a non-academic agenda when they do. The announcements of new AP African American Studies and Precalculus courses have attracted far more negative attention than honors classes typically do. Why? Amy and Mike invited educator John Moscatiello to unpack the controversies around new Advanced Placement programs. What are five things you will learn in this episode? 1. Why is the College Board introducing AP African American Studies and Precalculus courses? 2. Why hasn't this announcement gone smoothly? 3. What is the controversy around the AP African American Studies course? 4. What is the controversy around the AP Precalculus course? 5. What should we expect for these courses in the near future? MEET OUR GUEST John Moscatiello has been a leader in the education space for the past two decades. His career began at the Princeton Review, where he taught the SAT, ACT, SAT Subject Tests, AP Exams, ISEE, SSAT, SHSAT, GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT Verbal, and TOEFL. At the Princeton Review, John went on to train hundreds of teachers, write content for 13 test preparation books, and work as a college admissions consultant. In his capacity as the National Director of Tutoring from 2007 and 2009, John managed thousands of teachers and tutors, supporting them with online professional development and the creation of an online community. From 2015 to 2016, John starred in more than 200 educational videos for the Princeton Review's SAT, ACT, and GRE self-paced courses. John's academic career began as a Spanish major at New York University, where he realized the value of the AP Program by using credits to graduate a full year early. He then pursued graduate degrees in history from Fordham University and the University of Notre Dame, where he won awards for his undergraduate teaching. He was a Fulbright scholar to Spain in 2012 and worked at the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) in Madrid. John's academic research has been published in both English and Spanish. He currently teaches part-time at a private high school in Princeton, New Jersey. Timothy W Young wrote a textbook which explains the power of the number one in great detail with examples and illustrations to emphasize the amazing power of the simplest of numbers. The textbook is a must-read by all students in college who are preparing to be elementary teachers or secondary mathematics teachers. The topics covered in the book range from finding equivalent fractions, performing operations with fractions, ratios, percentages, rational expressions, and even calculus limit problems. The simple procedures introduced to find equivalent fractions in 3rd or 4th grade are the same procedures used to simplify the limit problems in calculus. When he was in college preparing to be a secondary mathematics teacher, he never took a course focused on “How to teach secondary mathematics courses" such as Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Trigonometry, Precalculus, Calculus 1, or even arithmetic. His wife, who was an elementary teacher, was not required to take a course focused on “How to teach arithmetic rules and procedures”. It is impossible to write an arithmetic or a mathematics book which focuses on one specific topic. His book focuses on ways third and fourth-grade elementary educators can introduce and teach the concepts and rules needed to solve problems involving fractions, ratios, conversions, percentages, and decimals. Many mathematicians believe these topics become the foundation required to work with high school mathematics problems including simplifying/solving rational expressions in algebra and derivative problems in calculus. Since Timothy's book is a “How to teach arithmetic and mathematics textbook”, it goes beyond what one would normally expect. Two new theorems are introduced, emphasized, and illustrated throughout the book. These theorems simplify the world of fractions, ratios, conversions, percentages, and much other arithmetic and mathematics topics. His editor, Steve Everhart, made the following summarization. It is impossible for someone to read this textbook, study the illustrations, and finally solve the assignment problems (which are directly related to the illustrated problems) and not master the procedures and rules illustrated. The first six chapters focus on arithmetic concepts and procedures. Chapter 7 emphasizes the same rules demonstrated in the preceding chapters to solve Algebra, Precalculus, and Calculus problems. Even though Timothy does not expect all elementary education majors to solve the advanced mathematics problems in Chapter 7 with 90% accuracy, he does expect elementary teachers to be able to follow the logic and the steps used in the illustrations. After taking a trip to India, it was through seeing poverty alleviation framed not as simply buildings and bridges but as care for the individuals in the system. He saw the ways, specifically, education was changing lives and career arcs. Thus, a career pivot ensued and McGregor pursued teaching. Today, he works at Da Vinci Science teaching both Precalculus and Civil Engineering + Architecture. In this episode of the CFWLA Podcast, McGregor chronicles his roundabout career journey, speaks to the impact educators can have through their work, and shares about ways he's seeking to serve his fellow educators and students. ANDREW BIO Andrew McGregor teaches both Precalculus and Civil Engineering + Architecture at Da Vinci Science in Los Angeles. He challenges students to create processes for solving, make connections between various representations, and understand how the mathematics is operating at a conceptual level. His hope for all his students is that they would learn to think well. In addition to mathematics he enjoys working with his hands (Civil Engineering) as well as tossing the frisbee during his seminar. Living only a couple blocks from campus, you might often see Mr. McGregor biking back home to his wonderful wife Diana, his two children, Daniel and Alina, and his Labrador Teddy. On Navigating Student Development as a Teacher: (10:33-11:16) “Right now a traditional notion of public education is standard-based and rat-race to get your kids in school at an earlier age to get into these schools and have this pathway. It's actually a really narrow vision of what education is: a road to a certain place or dumping a bunch of content into a student's head and having them regurgitate it. It's not what do I want them know but who do I want them to be. On Finding Identity in Changing Lives as an Educator: (23:10-23:28) “There's a human danger in just finding too much value in being a teacher and ‘making a difference,' and that should not drive what we're doing.” On Loving Your Neighbor at Work: (29:10-29:43) “It's more important to be kind sometimes than to be right. Especially on a staff with a lot of people with strong convictions, myself included, and learning to compromise on some things for the benefit of the team to show I care about the person more than I care about the decision.”

Far too often, we evaluate math ability in high schoolers solely on the basis of grades and level of math learned. A more accurate assessment of a student’s potential on challenging math tasks--including those posed on tests like the SAT and ACT--should consider mathematical maturity.  Amy and Mike invited author and test prep professional Dr. Steve Warner to define what this means and explain the link between mathematical maturity and test success.  What are five things you will learn in this episode? What is mathematical maturity? How can you determine your "level" of mathematical maturity? Can mathematical maturity be improved? How does mathematical maturity relate to standardized test scores? What steps can students seeking higher levels of mathematical maturity take? MEET OUR GUEST Dr. Steve Warner, a New York native, earned his Ph.D. at Rutgers University in Pure Mathematics in May 2001. After Rutgers, Dr. Warner joined the Penn State Mathematics Department as an Assistant Professor and in September 2002, he returned to New York to accept an Assistant Professor position at Hofstra University. By September 2007, Dr. Warner had received tenure and was promoted to Associate Professor. He has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in Precalculus, Calculus, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Mathematical Logic, Set Theory, and Abstract Algebra. From 2003 – 2008, Dr. Warner participated in a five-year NSF grant, “The MSTP Project,” to study and improve mathematics and science curriculum in poorly performing junior high schools. He also published several articles in scholarly journals, specifically on Mathematical Logic. Dr. Warner has nearly two decades of experience in general math tutoring and tutoring for standardized tests such as the SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT, and AP Calculus exams. He has tutored students both individually and in group settings. In February 2010 Dr. Warner released his first SAT prep book “The 32 Most Effective SAT Math Strategies,” and in 2012 founded Get 800 Test Prep. Since then Dr. Warner has written books for the SAT, ACT, SAT Math Subject Tests, AP Calculus exams, and GRE. In 2018 Dr. Warner released his first pure math book called “Pure Mathematics for Beginners.” Since then he has released several more books, each one addressing a specific subject in pure mathematics. Hosted by Professor Kyeong Hah Roh Abstract Much of what we say and write in our mathematics classes assumes that our students understand linguistic and logical conventions that have never been made explicit to them. What problems result from this assumption, and how can we address them? Biography Susanna S. Epp (Ph.D., University of Chicago, 1968) is Vincent de Paul Professor of Mathematical Sciences at DePaul University. After initial research in commutative algebra, she became interested in cognitive issues associated with teaching analytical thinking and proof and has published a number of articles and given many talks related to this topic. She is the author of Discrete Mathematics with Applications, now in its fourth edition, and of the newly published Discrete Mathematics: An Introduction to Mathematical Reasoning. She also co-authored the first edition of Precalculus and Discrete Mathematics, which was developed as part of the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project. Long active in the Mathematical Association of America, she is a co-author of CUPM Curriculum Guide 2004. In January 2005 she received the Louise Hay Award for contributions to mathematics education, and in April 2010 she received the Award for Distinguished Teaching of Mathematics from the Illinois Section of the Mathematical Association of America.
