Advanced Placement courses have set the standard for accelerated subject studies in many high schools, but next year's offerings may look very different from what teachers and students are used to. Amy and Mike invited educator John Moscatiello to explain the big changes–both in testing platforms and course options–in AP tests in 2025. What are five things you will learn in this episode? Why did the College Board revise the scoring of AP tests? How has the College Board recalibrated AP test scores? What new AP tests will be available in the 2024-2025 school year? How is digital testing affecting AP testing? Which tests? What potential changes could be on the horizon for the AP program? John Moscatiello has been a leader in the education space for the past two decades. His career began at the Princeton Review, where he taught the SAT, ACT, SAT Subject Tests, AP Exams, ISEE, SSAT, SHSAT, GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT Verbal, and TOEFL. At the Princeton Review, John went on to train hundreds of teachers, write content for 13 test preparation books, and work as a college admissions consultant. In his capacity as the National Director of Tutoring from 2007 and 2009, John managed thousands of teachers and tutors, supporting them with online professional development and the creation of an online community. From 2015 to 2016, John starred in more than 200 educational videos for the Princeton Review's SAT, ACT, and GRE self-paced courses. John's academic career began as a Spanish major at New York University, where he realized the value of the AP Program by using credits to graduate a full year early. He then pursued graduate degrees in history from Fordham University and the University of Notre Dame, where he won awards for his undergraduate teaching. He was a Fulbright scholar to Spain in 2012 and worked at the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) in Madrid. John's academic research has been published in both English and Spanish. He currently teaches part-time at a private high school in Princeton, New Jersey. John has supported thousands of students by building and implementing programs for underserved communities through the Peter Jay Sharp Foundation, TEAK Fellowship, NYC Service, Corporate and Social Responsibility at Proskauer Rose LLP, and the Aga Khan Development Network. John's tutoring and NGO work has taken him to more than 10 states and 25 countries around the world, especially in Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia, and East Africa. In 2018, John founded Marco Learning in order to address the lack of high-quality AP resources and to better support AP teachers and their students. John previously appeared on this podcast in episode 241 to discuss The Future Of AP Exams and episode 448 to discuss Controversies Around New AP Programs. Find John at https://marcolearning.com. Advanced Placement examinations are one of many ways to demonstrate to colleges that you are academically ready for the rigor of their institution. The breadth and flexibility of the AP program means that it absolutely should be considered as part of any college application strategy, even if you are not attending a school that offers AP. However, with those advantages come a series of misconceptions around how useful these exams are. This week, Tyler breaks down the AP Exams and talks through how to most effectively utilize them to boost your college application, while remaining mindful of some of the pitfalls that can come with focusing solely on APs as a measure of academic rigor.Join free webinars with Tyler Kusunoki at www.tokyoacademics.com/eventsNeed help applying to college? This conversation is nearly a year in the making, from the first messages with my guest back in 2022 - which also happened to be the last of my 9 years teaching AP European History. That year there were over 4.7 million AP Exams taken by 2.6 million students from 23,000 secondary schools. At about $100 per exam…well, you don't need to get a 5 on the AP Calc exam to finish that equation. And…here we are again, another high-stakes time of the academic year for yet millions more high schoolers seeking college credit from the College Board. From AP to SAT, the College Board is a billion dollar educational gatekeeper that plays an outsized role in American education in policy and practice, K12 and beyond. In fact, as my guest today outlines in her book, many states have passed laws requiring the College Board play exactly that role: mandating that schools offer a minimum number of AP courses (that require AP trained teachers), offering cash incentives for student test scores, & dictating to universities what scores they will be required to accept for which credits.Even more recent partisan challenges to curriculum, like the rejection of AP African-American History by the Florida Dept of Education, should also cause us to reflect on the homogenizing and controlling influence of what has become a de facto national curriculum, AND the metrics we use to evaluate success, AND the ways we assess & award credit, AND the philosophies & pedagogies we use in classrooms with students. Somewhere in the recent past, figure & ground inverted, and we not only lost track of what was important - the best intentions of what courses like these could represent - but along the way we ceded a lot of power to a single company and a single brand - Advanced Placement - to determine our educational goals, values, & practices from the top down.GuestsAnnie Abrams holds a doctorate in American literature from NYU and is currently on childcare leave from her job as a public high school English teacher. Politicians rarely weigh in on what students are taught in school and usually act from a non-academic agenda when they do. The announcements of new AP African American Studies and Precalculus courses have attracted far more negative attention than honors classes typically do. Why? Amy and Mike invited educator John Moscatiello to unpack the controversies around new Advanced Placement programs. What are five things you will learn in this episode? 1. Why is the College Board introducing AP African American Studies and Precalculus courses? 2. Why hasn't this announcement gone smoothly? 3. What is the controversy around the AP African American Studies course? 4. What is the controversy around the AP Precalculus course? 5. What should we expect for these courses in the near future? MEET OUR GUEST John Moscatiello has been a leader in the education space for the past two decades. The College Metropolis Podcast: College Admissions Talk for High School Students and Parents
#066 – On this episode we dive into the details of Advanced Placement courses, including the importance of having a number of them reflected in your transcripts, especially if you are planning to apply to highly selective colleges and universities. There may be departments or programs within colleges or universities that will expect to see specific AP courses on your academic record. An example of this may be Engineering Programs expecting to see a number of AP math and science courses in your transcripts. Jankel and I go over the different AP courses available, the number of AP courses you should take, the necessary scores to pass your AP Exams, the effect that a holistic approach employed by some admission departments will have on your application, and the one person in your high school who is prepared to help you with any AP questions you may have. That person can help you take the courses that will help you become a strong candidate for admission into the schools to which you will apply. We also explore the unit credit that colleges and universities may give you for taking AP courses and passing the AP Exams in those courses. Lastly, we analyze how Advanced Placement courses are managed at the Undergraduate Admission Office at Columbia University, and at the University of Southern California (USC) Marshall School of Business. There was a moment on this episode when I addressed an issue as a parent. The vast and challenging amounts of work that high school students have to do, especially when they are taking advanced courses. I mentioned I see it with my son, who currently is a sophomore in high school. The huge amounts of work are impossible to get done within a time that allows for appropriate rest for a teenager. You will hear my thoughts on that issue and what we are doing to make sure we support our son as he maintains his sanity. We think you will find this episode to be very supportive and helpful. You can find our show notes at https://collegemetropolis.com/66. You can help our podcast greatly by telling others about us, by giving us a 5-star rating, and by a leaving us a positive review. Welcome to the Drive Thru Mom's Podcast! When it comes to ‘all things history related', this guest is my go to. When I had questions about papers, or essays or political science exams in college, she is the one I called. Let's be honest, she is still the one I call. This week's guest is a 30+ year retired American History teacher, who has graded Advanced Placement Exams for US History, graded the SAT and ACT for College Board, taught summer institutes to teachers preparing to teach AP classes, was invited to be the keynote speaker for AP/College Board Convention in 2015, is a cancer survivor, Christ follower, a world traveler and one of the most learned, humble and respected teachers I know. What has 3 decades of teaching taught her and advice does she have for moms raising kids to appreciate their past, helping them forge their future? I can't wait for you to hear...because this genius is my momma! Welcome, Jackie McHargue, you are my favorite!
