We are recording Thursday afternoon on the 80th anniversary of the D-Day invasion that saved the world from a narcissistic, paranoid, racist and psychotic would-be world dictator. Our mission 80 years later as beneficiaries of their courage and sacrifice: constantly protect their legacy. In this week's political news: Convicted felon Donald Trump and his gang of MAGAs, several of whom are also convicted felons, are openly planning on turning the U.S. Justice Department into their revenge squad. The former president's conviction has produced a small pro-Biden bump in the polls, meaning it's still a tossup election. SERIES 2 EPISODE 172: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Robert F. Kennedy Junior who may turn out to be the spoiler who throws the election to Trump says under oath that his cognitive problems and short term and longer term memory loss from a worm that ate his brain and then died. On the other OTHER hand, too early to tell if it's an outlier or the start of the new wave, but swing state poll: Wisconsin, Quinnipiac, Registered voters: Biden 50 Trump 44. Three-way: Biden 40 Trump 39 Kennedy and his Worm, 12. Nevertheless. I'm not confident we can stave off fascism in this country because: worms in Kennedy's brain. AND Trump's trial in Florida has been delayed until the twelfth of never by an unqualified judge HE appointed and his trial in Georgia has been delayed indefinitely – probably into next year - because the appeals court says it WILL listen to Trump's appeal of the ruling that the district attorney didn't have a financial conflict of interest just because she hired her boyfriend to work on the case (because guess what: there IS a deep state and among its constituent parts are the legal system and partisan judges and the Supreme Court and an Attorney General who will go to his grave believing the people exist to serve laws rather than laws existing to serve the people. Also, because OBAMA's most public adviser criticized all the sex talk in the Stormy Daniels testimony and, oh by the way, WORMS IN KENNEDY'S BRAIN. Memory loss, quote: “caused by a worm that got into my brain and ate a portion of it and then died. I have cognitive problems, clearly. I have short-term memory loss, and I have longer-term memory loss that affects me.”RFK Junior, in a deposition during his divorce in 2012. When Kennedy said I was his HERO - I KNEW something was wrong. MEANWHILE the man who called out The New York Times for its vengeful coverage of Biden answers the Editor-in-Chief's strawman response that the paper won't become part of the Biden campaign. "In general, and this is a complaint I have had about the New York Times that is two decades old – I wish they would take good faith criticism from the left with as much seriousness as they take BAD faith criticism from the right," says Dan Pfeiffer. B-Block (24:51) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Lobbyist Jim Courtovich (if you're going to make a threat by quoting 'The Godfather' you better make sure you get the quote right), Speaker Mike Johnson (you know "intuitively" that non-citizens are voting? Is that like I know "intuitively" that there must have been fraud in your election? No facts, just a Spidey Sense?), and Congressman Mike Collins (You think last week's racism-at-Ole-Miss tweet was disqualifying? Wait'll you see this week's joke about the JFK and RFK assassinations). C-Block (32:10) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Trump mocked Lawrence O'Donnell after Tuesday's court session, so it's probably time for me to mock him. The day they finally incarcerate Joe Scarborough, O'Donnell will become the least sincere person on MSNBC. Ever seen the pilot of the old HBO show "The Newsroom"? Where the back-up tries to steal the show from the guy he's filling in for? Guess who that's actually about?    See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

SERIES 2 EPISODE 115: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Election polls are bullshit. In the morning came the polls showing Trump ahead by 8 in every swing state. Except the margin of error plus the undecided number is 16. In the afternoon came the polls showing Biden ahead by 6 in nationally. And Trump beating Haley. But Haley beating Biden. Except the margin of error plus the undecided number is 9.  I'll explain the "Keith Number" we should always attach to polling, and why polling was once considered unacceptable for inclusion in American TV newscasts, and how I sat there as an MSNBC executive once ordered Frank Luntz to take two polls or do two focus groups to confirm the predetermined outcome he wanted. Though there WAS one useful "interior number" in that Swing States poll that could augur a Biden landslide. PLUS: Judge Engoron hasn't revealed the figure, Alina Habba hasn't been fired but what Trump's done to her is much, much, worse. There was performative theater in the Senate social media hearing yesterday but ONE truth was emitted by Senator Tillis. And a bell rang somewhere and three of the most racist things ever said by Republicans were said without hesitation, by a Wisconsin state legislator ("Race Hustlers"), Senator Tom Cotton ('Are you sure you ain't Chinese?') and Nikki Haley, who, asked why she said she got shivers down her spine about the prospect of President Kamala Harris, immediately answered about how President Obama made everything about race. Pure cracker racism from Nikki Haley. B-Block (27:47) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Jesse Watters claims brainwashing, which is impossible if you don't have a brain. More racism from Congressman Troy Nehls. And Congressman Derrick Van Orden is so dumb, he's dumber than he was last year. C-Block (36:08) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: With news of Netflix possibly dropping Harry and Meghan Markle, I have a Netflix story to tell. I offered them the whole of the video news industry and they demanded Italian Subtitles.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

[00:30] Biden's Lowest Approval Ratings Yet (13 minutes)A recent Quinnipiac Poll found Joe Biden's approval rating is at an all-time low of 33 percent. CNN reported that Donald Trump's average approval rating during his presidency was higher than Joe Biden's is today. “This is the lowest for anyone who is elected to the presidency and didn't get up there through the vice presidency,” CNN's poll watcher said. “This is a really, really, really bad number.” [13:45] Extending Mask Mandates (6 minutes)Biden's administration announced it will extend the mask mandate for airlines to 15 more days. Interesting! Next, they dive into CNN 'Analyst' Areva Martin calling black conservative radio host David Webb a man who suffers from white privilege. His response is epic. They then discuss President Trump's trolling of Nancy Pelosi, canceling a prescheduled public relations tour out of 'respect for the 800,000 federal workers without pay.' It was hilarious. Then end by discussing Nassau County Executive Laura Curran trying to get ICE removed from a Nassau County Correctional Center. Why? We don't know. PELOSI AND THE CBC   Different polls have shown an unmistakable trend.  Black voters are beginning to show signs of leaving the Democrat Party. During the 2016 campaign, the Quinnipiac Poll showed Trump with just 1% of black voters supporting him.  It was well within the margin of error, so according to Quinnipiac, Trump's support could actually have been zero. Since becoming President, however, Trump's approval among blacks has steadily increased across several different polling organizations.  Recently, the NAACP funded a poll and found 29% of blacks approving of Trump's job performance.  Other polls since then have shown Trump's approval among blacks at 36-38%.  It's been a very long time since a Republican had approval numbers like that among blacks. What could account for this turnaround?  Especially since the media and Democrats have spared Trump little and have accused him of being a racist over and over.  These are tangible reasons why Trump's approval is going up among black voters. THE DECLINE OF BLACK UNEMPLOYMENT When Barack Obama entered office in January 2009, black unemployment stood at 12.7%.  By the time he left office in January 2017, it had fallen to 7.8%.  A 63% decline over 8 years. By October 2018, Trump further reduced black unemployment to 6.2%, an historic low.  Under Obama, the black unemployment rate increased until it peaked in 2011 at 16.5%.  The decline did not get into single digits until 2015, falling to a 7 year low.  Over Trump's first 22 months in office, the black unemployment rate fell 20% from 7.8% to 6.2%. Trump managed to accelerate the reduction in the unemployment rate.  How was this possible?  There are several possible answers, but the most likely one is that Trump's election slowed the flow of illegal immigrants into the United States. Illegal immigrants are generally low on skills and education.  When they enter the US looking for employment, they compete with Americans who are also low on skills and education.  The population of unemployed in the US is disproportionately low skilled and low education.  Furthermore, that population is also disproportionately black.  In other words, fewer illegal immigrants competing for jobs meant more opportunities for employment for the unemployed American citizens who were disproportionately black.  Among other factors, this could account for Trump's popularity increase in the black community. While Democrats strenuously deny Trump has any foothold in the black community, their actions reveal how they really think. The Democrats have been playing the race card and a racial agenda very hard under Trump.  It is possibly an indication that they suspect a deterioration in black support and are resorting to their old playbook: playing on fears of the re-emergence of openly hostile white racists.  Democrats do this while pretending two full generations of Americans never grew up in the post Civil Rights era.  They dismiss the impact of their own monumental achievements as having had a negligible impact on the disposition of white people all across America regarding race.  They pretend that left to their own devices, white people in America would reinstate the same racist preferences that were overturned more than half a century ago.  Preferences overturned by the grandparents and great grandparents of those Americans who grew up after the Civil Rights Act was passed into law and only know an America marked by integration and racial reconciliation.  Resorting to the race card in our current day is intended to terrorize black voters away from Republicans as if they are Klansmen without the hoods. When the Democrats play the race card as they are with Trump despite the fact that blacks are doing better under his policies, it is a hint that they believe those polls showing blacks warming up to his presidency. If the Democrat Party were to lose 20-30% of the black vote to Republicans, it would spell catastrophe on a national scale for them at the ballot box.  It would open up districts with heavy black populations all over the country to races that are competitive between Republicans and Democrats, where they aren't today. This is a doomsday scenario for Democrats and it can explain, at least in part, why they are so bullish about illegal immigration:  they realize it will become increasingly difficult to hold on to the black vote and want to import a new underclass that will vote for them. But improving job approval numbers for Trump among blacks doesn't mean it will translate into votes for Trump or other Republicans.  A transformation of the black vote from a solid Democrat block into something more diversified may be underway, but a lot more needs to happen in order for that transformation to be confirmed. It can all be summed up this way: "Something's happening here.  What it is, ain't exactly clear." Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.
