With players out of position, late injury disruptions, and an overall lackluster display, Ireland's Nations League promotion hopes have taken a major hit—and possibly their World Cup qualification dreams too. Aaron was in the stadium in Koper and gives us his first-hand analysis of the game, what went wrong, and what must change.Meanwhile, the President's Cup showdown between Athlone Town and Shelbourne takes a back seat, though it remains a fascinating clash. When to stop buying family Christmas presents, Trump is Person of Year with UW-L political scientist Chergosky

A giant mix of politics and holidays on Friday’s La Crosse Talk PM with UW-L political science professor, Dr. Anthony Chergosky, that included why the mayor isn’t running for reelection, ending the tradition of buying Christmas presents and politicians, off the last nine months, telling workers to return to the office. Began the show, though, on Donald Trump winning the Time Person of the Year — a list that didn’t include Joe Biden. Plus, how Trump runs on prices are too high and in the very same Person of the Year article, Trump said of grocery prices, “It’s hard to bring things down once they’re up.” We then weaved that into why La Crosse Mayor Mitch Reynolds isn’t seeking reelection. And, as there are still only three on the list, could he get back in the race? We bring that up, too, in discussing how anyone running for the spring election needs to announce now. The deadline is Jan. 7, but the window to get your name out there could close Feb. 20 — the last day of primary voting. After that, speaking of running for reelection, does Rebecca Cooke need to get into the 2026 race for US House in the 3rd District against Derrick Van Orden now? About halfway through the show, we completely changed gears and talked about if families should stop buying Christmas presents for each other, because it becomes just a “tell the other what to get” exchange. We then highlighted the past two Yesterday In La Crosse articles, featuring when the Valley View Mall was essentially downtown La Crosse and how much Mt. La Crosse cost in 1959 — as it is the ski hill’s 65th year. Ended the show with a bit about the cold and walking through La Crosse’s Rotary Lights in Riverside Park and capped it all off on how Wisconsin state Assembly Speaker Robin Vos says workers need to return to the office. And that’s coming from a guy who hasn’t worked since March, as the Wisconsin state Legislature is out of session for the last nine months of 2024. UW-La Crosse political science professor, Dr. Anthony Chergosky, in studio breaking down the August primary, the relatively huge turnout, Republicans losing on the constitutional amendments and Rebecca Cooke winning in the UW House race.  Began the show on voter turnout, which wasn't huge, but also was at a 60-year high.  We then took a sidebar (9:30) from election recap, first talking about how Chergosky nearly got hit by a bicyclists on the sidewalk — across the road from the 2nd Street bike track — and what looks good to eat at the Minnesota State Fair coming up. Next (14:40) we got back into the failed GOP constitutional amendments and if turnout had anything to do with that, and how another amendment — basically culture war nonsense from the GOP — coming on the November ballot.  Lastly (23:55), we got into the 3rd District race for US House in Wisconsin that saw Cooke kind of easily win over the two other Democrats and what the results say about moving on to face Republican Derrick Van Orden.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A lot going on in La Crosse this weekend on both ends of the spectrum, as Jean Taylor and Josh Hertel both join to talk about two big events. Then Hertel joins (18:50) to talk about Coulee Con, this gaming extravaganza, happening Friday-Sunday at the La Crosse Center.  Began the show, though, with a bit of a recap from the August primary, with the two Republican-written constitutional amendments being voted down, Tara Johnson and Rebecca Cooke winning Democratic primaries for state Assembly and US House. Big River Rally features a pair of concerts — Buckcherry on Friday and Jackyl on Saturday — stunt shows, a bike show, vendors, a veterans breakfast and a pair of rides through the Coulee Region, including one featuring WKTY's Bill Michaels and Jackyl's Jesse James Dupree. And, at the La Crosse Center, the 10th annual and possibly last Coulee Con — a tabletop gaming convention that's put on by Hertel, who is also the president of Coulee Gaming Inc. Get tickets for Coulee Con by clicking here. One of the cool aspects that we discussed was how Hertel gets sent never-before-played games, sets up tournaments with them and the winner takes home the game, which may be one of a kind or the next big thing. William Garcia in the WIZM studio Thursday for La Crosse Talk PM discussing the upcoming US House candidate Democratic forum on Wednesday at UW-La Crosse, the peculiar timing of new policies passed by the Biden Administration and politicians useless campaign posts. Garcia is the Democratic Party chair for both La Crosse County and the 3rd US House District here in Wisconsin. Began the show discussing the first of four US House forums for the 3rd District between Rebecca Cooke, Katrina Shankland and Eric Wilson in Eau Claire and, later in the show (30:10) got into more of how those are conducted and how you can get involved (Email questions to Garcia here). We then got into the timing of recently passed policies (7:50) by the Biden Administration on overtime pay for salary workers, doing away with noncompetes and airlines having to pay back customers immediately for cancellations, among other things. That led to a discussion (13:45) on what the US House has done along the same regards of helping everyday people, though it has only passed 27 bills in 16 months — when a typical Congress passes 250-300 bills. In the second half of the show (20:45) we discussed how politicians have no substance to what they're doing on the campaign trail, positing pictures of themselves here or there, saying they're talking about issues, but never relaying any of that information to voters who want to know either where they stand or what they're doing to combat said issues.  Next (22:50), we discussed Vice President Kamala Harris' visit to La Crosse and all the things she did during her that campaign stop. We also talked about the optics and normality of the scope of her visit, that included a round-table discussion and an invite-only speech, vs., for example, a Donald Trump rally.  In the last segment (34:40) we talk about Republican US Senate candidate Eric Hovde messing up the Pledge of Allegiance earlier this week and how stupid things our politicians do are funny, but we should be focusing on their policies more than their gaffs.   La Crosse Talk PM airs weekdays at 5:06 p.m. Listen on the WIZM app, online here, or on 92.3 FM / 1410 AM / 106.7 FM (north of Onalaska). We also may have come up with a campaign slogan, plus we talked choice and some local issues to take to DC. A big part of the conversation was about healthcare and, in there, we may have the pitch every candidate should be using on the issue: “You Don't Have To Think About It Healthcare.” Johnson, the first-ever female chair of the La Crosse County Board, told a personal story about how her family was struck with medical emergencies, and how someone in a different health insurance position may not have had the same outcome. We also talked about choice, where she told another story how that's affected her and her family, as overturning Roe v Wade sent Wisconsin back to the 1800s, where a 174-year-old abortion ban law went back into effect until just recently. Before we got into all that, though, we did spend some time on the state of the House right now and how local issues here could and should be tackled in D.C. Along with being the first-ever board chair — doing that nine years — Johnson served on the La Crosse County Board for 20 years. Before that, she was the executive director at the United Way in La Crosse. Johnson is one of three Democrats, so far, running in Wisconsin's 3rd CD, along with Rebecca Cooke and Aaron Nytes.  The seat is currently held by first-term Republican Derrick Van Orden.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
