From breaking bones to trudging through snow – it is a Foley artist's role to reproduce the everyday sound effects that are added to film, TV and games. By using a variety of unconventional props and their own bodies, the goal is to create an authentic soundscape that will enhance our auditory experience. If the Foley goes unnoticed then they've done their job well! Datshiane Navanayagam speaks to two award winning Foley artists and asks what it's like to spend so much time, quite literally stepping into someone else's shoes. Caoimhe Doyle has over 25 years' experience creating Foley sound effects and footsteps for film, television and video games. She's been nominated three times for the MPSE Golden Reel Award for her work on Colm Bairéad's An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl), The Favourite, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and David Cronenberg's Eastern Promises. In 2011 she won a MPSE Golden Reel Award and was nominated for an Emmy for her work on Game of Thrones: Season 1 and is a current MPSE nominee for work on Rich Peppiatt's Kneecap. Caoimhe collaborates with an all-female team out of The Foley Lab in a quiet part of County Wicklow in Ireland.Marita Sbeih is a Lebanese Foley artist and one of only a handful working in the Middle East. Since 2018, she has been the dedicated Foley Artist at DB Studios in Beirut, which provides audio post-production for films, documentaries, and art productions from around the globe. Pursuing a career as a Foley artist in a country with many unique challenges has been far from easy, but Marita has built an impressive list of credits for Foley and footsteps in some of the Arab world's more distinguished art-house and indie productions, as well as international projects. Most recently, she worked on Hot Milk, a UK film directed by Rebecca Lenkiewicz, which was selected for the official competition at the 75th Berlinale (2025).Produced by Hannah Dean (Image: (L) Caoimhe Doyle courtesy Caoimhe Doyle. Director Maria Schrader, screenwriter Rebecca Lenkiewicz, cast members Carey Mulligan, Zoe Kazan, and Ashley Judd, and New York Times journalists Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey discuss She Said, a Spotlight selection and World Premiere at NYFF60, with NYFF Executive Director Eugene Hernandez. In 2017, New York Times reporters Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey broke a story that would change the world. Uncovering decades of sexual harassment and assault in Hollywood, Kantor and Twohey boldly took on an establishment that had too long been allowed to systematically protect abusers. This thrilling new drama based on Kantor and Twohey's best-selling book about their hard-fought investigation is directed by Maria Schrader (director of I'm Your Man and the acclaimed TV series Unorthodox) from a screenplay by Rebecca Lenkiewicz (Ida). She Said stars Zoe Kazan and Carey Mulligan in wonderful performances as the two intensely committed reporters whose efforts would ultimately help ignite the #MeToo movement. Schrader's film, in the tradition of All the President's Men and Spotlight, is a tribute to the art and importance of investigative journalism, as well as a moving portrait of two women whose personal lives couldn't be put on hold even as they navigated a labyrinth of NDAs, legal double binds, and frightened witnesses. She Said's remarkable supporting cast includes Patricia Clarkson, Andre Braugher, Samantha Morton, and Jennifer Ehle. A Universal Pictures release. Welcome to Episode 4 of Scripted by Paradox House... This week we spend some quality time with award-winning writer, Rebecca Lenkiewicz. Listen in as Daisy goes deeper into the process of writing for film, tv and theatre where golden knowledge lies. You're in for a treat. Rebecca Lenkiewicz is a British playwright and screenwriter. She is best known as the author of Her Naked Skin (2008), which was the first original play written by a living female playwright to be performed on the Olivier stage of the Royal National Theatre. Several of Rebecca's plays have been published individually, and in 2013 Faber & Faber published a collection. Rebecca wrote on Secret Diary of a Call Girl for television. She co-wrote the Polish-language film Ida (2013) with Paweł Pawlikowski, its director. The film is set in Poland in the 1960s and is the story of what happens when a novitiate nun first learns that she is an orphan of Jewish parenthood. The first version of the screenplay was written in English by Lenkiewicz and Pawlikowski, when it had the working title Sister of Mercy. Pawlikowski then translated the screenplay into Polish and revised it. The screenplay for Ida won the European Screenwriter category at the 27th European Film Awards in 2014,[29] and the Oscar for Best Foreign Film at the ceremony on 22 February 2015. She co-wrote, with director Sebastian Leilo, the script for the adaptation of Disobedience in 2017. She and collaborators Wash Westmoreland and Richard Glatzer wrote the screenplay for Colette in 2018. More recently for TV, Rebecca was the lead writer for Steve McQueen's hard-hitting series, Small Axe (2020), which is based on the real-life experiences of London's West Indian community and is set between 1969 and 1982. With John Wilson. Wilko Johnson, one of Britain's most charismatic guitarists, has terminal cancer, with doctors suggesting that he has less than a year to live. As he prepares for farewell UK concerts in March, he reflects on how his diagnosis has made him feel "vividly alive". And, guitar in hand, he demonstrates the distinctive terse sound which powered the band Dr Feelgood in the 1970s, when they became one of the UK's most influential live acts. To mark the centenary of the birth of painter William Scott, the Tate St Ives is celebrating his life and art with an exhibition of his most important work. John talks to William Scott's son about his father's life and legacy, and how he influenced Rothko's decision to bequeath his paintings to the Tate. Henry James' classic horror story The Turn Of The Screw has been adapted by Benjamin Britten into an opera, produced as a ballet by William Tuckett, turned into a film starring Deborah Kerr and become several TV dramas. Now playwright Rebecca Lenkiewicz has created a stage version, co-produced by Hammer Theatre Of Horror - the company's first venture into theatre. Author Kate Saunders joins John to assess just how chilling this new incarnation is. Producer: Olivia Skinner.
