In one of the biggest matchups of their season so far, the Rockets will face the Memphis Grizzlies on Thursday for the No. 2 spot in the Western Conference. The Rockets currently have a half-game lead on the Grizzlies, and with a win, will earn a full 1.5-game lead and hold a 2-0 record in an important tiebreaker. "It'll be a good test for us," head coach Ime Udoka said. The Rockets are coming off a dominant 135-112 victory over the Washington Wizards to begin their three-game road trip. The starting lineup got off to a slow start, being down 10 points in the first quarter, but Jalen Green scored 22 of his 29 points in the third quarter, putting the game out of reach for the Wizards. "We definitely looked a little sluggish coming out of the gate," Udoka said. Green and Alperen Sengun continue to be the offensive leaders for the Rockets, even with more teams keying in on their play and altering their attacks. Sengun is "one of the best scoring big men in the league... We love the open shots he creates for us," Udoka said. The Rockets have secured strong wins even with injuries affecting their rotation. Jabari Smith Jr. is out with a left metacarpal fracture, and Tari Eason has been dealing with lower left leg soreness that required surgery last March. Eason has missed 10 straight games. "We want to be smart with it," Udoka said. "He's trending in the right direction." With players recovering from injury, Cam Whitmore has stepped up after a slow start to his sophomore season, recording 17 points in 18 minutes against the Wizards. Following his return from a brief assignment to the G League, Whitmore appeared displeased with his role on the team when speaking to the media after a win over the Dallas Mavericks. However, Udoka combats speculation concerning Whitmore's attitude. "People are making a little bit too much out of nothing." Rookie Reed Sheppard was assigned to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers on Monday and scored 49 points on 17-for-33 shooting in his debut Tuesday against the Oklahoma City Blue. According to Udoka, Sheppard won't stay in the G League for long. "He'll be back with us when we play Memphis at home [on January 13]."

Houston Rockets head coach Ime Udoka joins The Matt Thomas Show to preview the matchup against the Brooklyn Nets. Udoka says the defensive strategy will focus on Nets guard Cam Thomas. "He's the guy we really have to key in on." Udoka also gives an update on Rockets forward Dillon Brooks who has been out with an oblique injury. "He's getting work in," but "he's on a week-to-week basis." With various starting lineup combinations, Udoka highlights Jae'Sean Tate, Tari Eason and Alperen Şengün because they "have impacted winning the most this year." After guard Amen Thompson was out due to injury and then spent some time with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in the G League, he is back in Houston and contributing to team success. An injury as a rookie "halted the progress," but he is "knocking the rust off," Udoka said.

Welcome back, TBL Nation! Anji and Anna are buzzing with excitement as they dive into the incredible journey of the winningest coach in Timberwolves history—Chris Finch. We kick things off with a trip down memory lane to Finch's early days. Born on November 6, 1969, in Cambridge, Ohio, Finch's basketball prowess was evident early on. A two-time All-American at Franklin & Marshall College, he left an indelible mark on the court. Despite the NCAA Division III championship loss in 1991, Finch's impact at F&M earned him a spot in the college's Hall of Fame in 2002. Post-college, Finch took his skills to England, playing professionally for the Sheffield Forgers/Sharks from 1993 to 1997. But Finchy wasn't just a player—he transitioned into a player-coach. His coaching career took off as he led the Sheffield Sharks to multiple titles, earning him the prestigious BBL Coach of the Year award in 1999. The journey didn't stop there. Finch ventured into coaching in Germany and Belgium, leaving a mark of success wherever he went. His arrival in the NBA's G-League with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers saw immediate triumph—a championship and the D-League Coach of the Year award. Fast forward to the NBA, where Finch's coaching acumen shone. From the Houston Rockets to the Denver Nuggets, New Orleans Pelicans, and eventually the Toronto Raptors, he left an impact at every stop. On February 22, 2021, Finch took the helm as the head coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves. In his first full season, he guided the team to a remarkable 46–36 finish and secured their first playoff berth since 2018. Finch's coaching brilliance didn't go unnoticed. He received well-deserved recognition in the 2021–22 NBA Coach of the Year voting. And on April 11, 2022, he inked a multi-year extension with the Timberwolves, solidifying his place in the team's storied history. Join Anji and Anna as they celebrate Chris Finch's journey, from player to the pinnacle of coaching success. It's a tale of passion, perseverance, and a deep love for the game. This episode is a conversation with Benjamin Sanders. I found this to be a conversation filled with openness. Coach Sanders' experience at the collegiate and professional levels have exposed him to many different forms of leadership. Our conversations so far have mostly centered around an individual servant-leader. And in this conversation, we hear Coach Sanders' perspective of having also received more diminishing forms of leadership, from ego-driven leaders. He highlights that we help others to be servant-leaders by being servant-leaders ourselves, and that his shift from an inward focus and self-preservation to servant-leadership came in part from the empowerment and servant-leadership he received from others. He also highlights the power of humility, genuine communication, and finding joy in the successes of others.Coach Sanders is the Video Coordinator for the Long Island Nets, the Brooklyn Nets G-League Affiliate. Coach Sanders has extensive G-League experience, having also previously served on the staffs of the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, and the Windy City Bulls, including serving as an assistant coach with Windy City last season. Coach Sanders previously served as a Video Coordinator at the collegiate level, and also runs his own basketball analytics service, Benjamin Sanders Hoops Analytics, which you can explore at bshoopsanalytics.com.Further Reading:Servant Leadership by Robert GreenleafThe Power of Servant Leadership by Robert Greenleaf, edited by Larry Spearsadamgcoaching.comLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/adam-gierlach/Twitter: https://twitter.com/adamgierlachInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/adam.gierlach/
