WARNING - EXTREME CONTENTIf you are effected by this podcast and need help please reach out to one of the brilliant organisations such as Samaritans or PTSD999Mick Baker was born in Kent and from an early age he wanted to join the Army. He went on to become a soldier and joined the Royal Army Medical Corp and went to training in Lichfield. He inadvertently became top recruit due to a negligent discharge by a colleague. He was based in Aldershot and his experience was full on. His medical training set him up for life. He transferred from the RAMC to the Royal Military Police and was immediately posted to Northern Ireland with 176 Provost Comp. At the conclusion of his tour to Northern Ireland he was posted to Colchester to serve 156 Provost Company and the larger-than-life Staff Sgt Sam Appleyard. Having arrived in Colchester he served with Staff Sgt Sam Appleyard and remembers L/Cpl Paul Lon who was killed in action. At the conclusion of his service Mick joined Hertfordshire Police and served in Hitchin and the regime was very structured and standards were very important to him and the rest of the team. During a fit of peak Mick walked away from the job and went travelling !Having run out of money he returned to the UK and whilst driving through Hertfordshire he decided to call into the headquarters and ask for his old job back. Unbelievably they took him back into the fold. Mick thrived on proactive operations and formed a relationship with members of the British Transport Police whilst conducting operations at the local train stations. He transferred to the BTP and started at Kings Cross. As an officer Mick was one of many who dealt people who died by suicide. He recounts a tragic time in Cyprus when he was called to a head on RTC where the occupants of the vehicles were seriously injured and resulted in fatalities. He felt that he had failed at the scene( which he hadn't). and was advised that he was too emotionally attached to the incident. This advice assisted through his career until the emotional baggage became too overwhelming.Mick was having issues in the workplace that meant he went off sick. He found the senior management of BTP and Occupational Health as being underwhelming. He was accused of working outside of the job and the bullying tactics got the better of him. Mick has now retired and undertakes medical training including FREC 3 training and would welcome a meeting with the senior management from BTP Hosted on Acast. BRIXMIS and its operations behind enemy lines continue to fascinate the listeners of Cold War Conversations. In August 2024 I was honoured to be invited to the National Army Museum in London to interview Andrew Long, the author of BRIXMIS and the Secret Cold War - Intelligence Collecting Operations Behind Enemy Lines in East Germany. The National Army Museum is a leading authority on the British Army and its impact on society past and present. It's well worth a visit, particularly their Foe to Friend exhibition about the British Army in Germany since 1945 which is on until the end of September 2024. In front of a sellout audience including approximately 50 BRIXMIS veterans and their families, we discuss the role, purpose and achievements of BRIXMIS. The accompanying presentation can be viewed here. The interview starts with an introduction from former BRIXMIS officer Major General Peter Williams and Chairman of the BRIXMIS Association. I'm delighted to welcome Peter Williams, Andrew Long and a sellout audience at the National Army Museum to our Cold War Conversation. Andy Unwin MBE is a serving member of the British Army. He was instrumental in the introduction of the medicine ball challenge. His decision to launch this project was made following the untimely death of his friend Reece Miller who was fondly known as smiler. Reece had taken his own life.Andy considered his options to raise awareness . he saw that mental health was a weight which anyone can carry but it's not visible. He took a medicine ball, a chain and a pair of handcuffs and wore the weight it for 2 weeks, day and night! He launched the concept on International Men's Day 2018. Initially he was purchasing the equipment himself. The first participant was Andy Reid MBE, andy is a Triple Amputee. Andy was becoming overwhelmed by the amount of interest when he received a welcomed call from Andy Perkins of the Royal Military Police. The pair joined forces and the project goes from strength to strength. The team now receive significant support from the Army Benevolent fund and Combat Stress who provide the equipment to willing participants! The likes of JP Morgan, The Fire Service, Members of the Police and Security Institute have become active supporters.Andy received the MBE because of his efforts. The announcement came shortly after Andy had lost his wife to suicide; it was a bittersweet experience. At the insistence of his mum, he attended the ceremony at Windsor Castle where he met HRH Prince William.Andy's mantra is “Don't make a permanent decision over a temporary emotion”.If you want to take part or donate, please click on the link! On this episode I have a chat with Richard J Aitch. When making my transition to the private sector and from Australia to the UK, I did a little digging around and due diligence to find out who was who in the Close Protection industry. Richard's name came up on several occasions as a leader in the UK CP sector. Richard joined the UK Military in 1989 serving with the Parachute Regiment and the Royal Military Police. It was whilst in the RMP where he was drawn into their Close Protection wing the RMPCP. After leaving the military, Richard continued to pursue his Close Protection career in the private sector working in high end tasks/operations accross 6 continents and over 60 countries. Soon after, Richard and his business partner saw a need to raise industry standards and started their company Mobius International employing only those with a history and relevant experience in government level Close Protection. After over 30 years of continued relevant experience Richard has become a true subject matter expert in the security and Close Protection industry. With this experience and passion, he has been a vocal critic of the UK's Security Industry Authority (SIA) standards and continues to provide recommendations and is not afraid to call out issues and flaws that are currently present. If that wasn't enough, Richard is also a best selling author of the book Close Protection: A Closer Observation of the Protection Equation with a revised addition coming out in October (links to the book below). Richard thank you for your service, time and continued passion for this industry. Thanks everyone for tuning in! Keith Bailey Joined British Army at 16 in 1973. He was recruited into the Blues and Royals, (Household Cavalry) and served in West Germany as a gunner in Chieftain tanks. SOXMIS operated under a 1946 agreement where the Soviets, British, US and French agreed to exchange mission groups to patrol the opposing side's then zones of occupation. The agreement continued to 1990 and needless to say both sides bent the rules somewhat… Cold War history is disappearing; however, a simple monthly donation will keep this podcast on the air. The planned withdrawal of British and other foreign troops from Afghanistan relies on the Afghan army and police to take over security duties. Since 2002, the USA has spent $27bn - over half of its total reconstruction fund - training and equipping Afghan forces. The aim is to build up an army of 171,600 people and a police force of 134,000 by October 2011. The Afghan President Hamid Karzai wants national forces to be in complete control of the country by 2014. But these targets, and the loyalty of some personnel, are called into question by recent killings carried out by members of the Afghan security forces: *20 July 2010: two US weapons trainers were shot dead by an Afghan soldier *13 July 2010: three British soldiers were attacked by an Afghan soldier who shot one dead in his bed and fired a rocket-propelled grenade which killed two others *3 November 2009: three British soldiers and two members of the Royal Military Police were shot dead by an Afghan policeman. An investigation published in June 2010 by the US Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction found that officials had often overstated the readiness of Afghan forces, rating some units as first class when they were incapable of fighting the Taliban on their own. It also reported high levels of desertion, corruption and drug abuse. Gerry Northam asks if the transition to Afghan control is really on track. Producer: David Lewis Editor: David Ross.
