“Our number one market is Connecticut. We're all in on Connecticut,” Saybrook Point Resort and Marina managing partner Stephen Tagliatela told the CBIA BizCast. The BizCast sat down with Taglietala and general manager Chris Bird at the resort overlooking the mouth of the Connecticut River. “We're part of the community. We're all open doors,” Tagliatela said. Those doors have been open since 1980 when Tagliatela's family bought the former Terra Mar property, once a popular destination for Frank Sinatra and other members of the Rat Pack. Since then, the resort has grown to include not only the marina and guest rooms, but also restaurants, a full service spa, pools, and gymnasiums that are open to the community. “I think what makes it so special is the history, and 100% is the team,” said Bird, who joined the resort in 2022. “We hear it constantly, how genuine the team is. And you know, it's one thing to have and talk about being a family property or family business, and it's another that that is your value—run it like a business and have those family values.” Bird and Tagliatela said the team is indispensable to the resort's success. “What's really important for us is we have to take care of our customers,” Tagliatela said. “But in order for us to take care of our customers, we have to take care of our employees.” Bird said that when they look to bring on new employees, they “hire for personality and train for skill.” “We are very good about finding people who are gracious, are upfront, are very guest forward.” The company also partners with organizations like Lumibility, which helps people with differing abilities transition into the workforce. They've also worked with reentry programs, helping train formerly incarcerated individuals with skills to enter the workforce. “We just feel so strongly that we have to be the flagship, the steward of this area,” Bird said. “And so whenever it comes time for somebody who we can partner with we can help—we're quick to do it.” Another of the family and business values is to ensure that they help preserve the local environment. “We want to be good stewards of this environment, because it's so special,” said Tagliatela. The property was the state's first certified clean marina, green hotel, and Energy Star hotel. “We have this outstanding natural resource here that is so beautiful and has remained beautiful over the course of time,” Tagliatela said. Tagliatela and Bird also stressed the importance of being part of the broader tourism community. Tagliatela started the Connecticut Tourism Coalition seven years ago. The organization brings partners together from around the state to advocate for the industry and the importance of tourism marketing. “It's not just in my mind that you're marketing a guest room,” he said. “You're marketing a future resident. “Because so many people that come and visit us here, they move into our own neighborhoods. “We really try to bring home the revenue, demonstrate that the revenue is so much greater when they just put a little bit of advertising into the program.” Looking ahead, Bird and Tagliatela said they have some exciting initiatives on the horizon including personalized butler service. “We're seeing more and more of the luxury guests wanting more luxury experiences, more curated experiences, and so we're really excited to launch that next year,” Bird said. “When you have a team that knows that they can consistently do everything and to make it world class, they make it world class.” Related Links: Saybrook Point Resort and Marina Website: https://www.saybrook.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/saybrook-point-inn-&-spa/ Stephen Tagliatela LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephen-tagliatela-ab7056b9/ Chris Bird LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/chris-bird-5764a815/ CBIA Website: https://www.cbia.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/cbia/

In this episode, Charlie Samolczyk is joined by Chris Bird and Charles Carwin to discuss the trends and themes they have seen in the P&C capital modeling market.
From his earliest recollections Chris Bird was always interested in business, commerce and sales-from operating drink stands by the neighborhood tennis court to advertising his lawn mowing business on white match book cases with a rubber stamp with his contact information. In college, Chris even started 1520 Enterprises Unlimited to loan money to friends who were short on funds pending payday or mom and dad's deposit. Although unincorporated and unlicensed that business was very similar to today's payday and title loan businesses. After college, at this grandfather's urging, Chris studied for and passed the life insurance licensing exam. With the desire to be his own boss driving him, he left that business and started a series of businesses-Microcomputer Consulting Associates, consulting and custom software design; Lido Development, LLC-buying, improving, developing and selling real property and Spec-Tech architectural consulting. (Notable local projects included Peabody Place, Target House and FedExForum) In 1999, Chris was asked to consider purchasing Delta Door and Hardware Co. by its owners and spent a year inside the company working towards that goal. In 2000, at a meeting of Memphis Rotary, John Dillard told Chris he wanted to retire. Chris formed an agreement with John Dillard, Jr that he would form a new corporation that in two years would purchase the assets of the existing Dillard Door & Specialty Co. Chris took $75K in savings and a personal note from JD to capitalize the new corporation Dillard Door & Security, Inc. At the time of purchase, the company had 12 employees and was doing about 2 million in revenue. In 5 years the company had grown to about 50 employees and 6 million in revenue. In 2008, the security portion of the business had become large enough that they started a separate company Dillard Security Services, LLC to better handle the needs of the security business. While the recession years took its toll on new construction related businesses, the security and service sector of our business continued to thrive and produce more than 8mil in revenue and both are climbing. In 2013, due to the increased amount of business done with law enforcement entities, a Federal Firearms License was procured to offer firearms, as well as other security services, to law enforcement contacts. DSS Firearms, LLC is now almost a stand-alone business. In 2018, Dillard Door acquired Tri-State Glass, a 60 year old, family owned business that had a large portion of its revenue from Dillard. This is coming full circle because when John Dillard, Sr. started his business in 1947 it was called Southern Glass and evolved from just glass to what Dillard Door & Security, Inc. is today. Chris Bird is actively involved in various church and community organizations including the Memphis Rotary Club Board, Regional One Health Foundation Board of Directors, Calvary Episcopal Church Vestry, Door and Hardware Institute, the Construction Specifications Institute, Morrison Architectural Scholarship Fund at UofM, Memphis Heritage Board, NFIB State Leadership Council and Crime Stoppers. Links to items mentioned in the interview: Dillard Door and Security, Inc. It asks the following four questions: "Of the things we think, say or do: Is it the TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all concerned? Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"
On this episode, Chris Bird discusses how successful agents know the importance of having a business entity. He also explains stepped up basis, which is a tax benefit that occurs when an asset is transferred after death, and cash balance defined benefit plans for retirement savings. He also breaks down the pass-through entity tax loophole for S corporations or partnerships in states with income taxes to save on taxes without cost. He briefly touches upon LLCs being able to be taxed as S corps while advising agents to consult a CPA. Get your Episode Guide here https://courses.lindamckissack.com/elar-episode-guide
On this episode, Linda and Dana talk to Chris Bird, an expert in real estate tax issues, about the ten biggest current issues in real estate from a federal tax standpoint. The topics include electing to depreciate property over time or write it off quickly, the Qualified Business Income Deduction, the Augusta Rule, which allows for tax-free rental income if renting out a principal residence or second home for less than 15 days during the year, cost segregation studies which offer significant tax write-off potential, and using S Corporations to limit Social Security tax liabilities. He breaks down how President Biden's plans may affect some of these topics in future tax bills. He also shares how to push legal deductions aggressively while not messing around with income. Episode Summary Welcome to Part-Two of the Derek Bird podcast. If you haven't listened to Part-One yet, I highly encourage you to head over there first. Derek dives into growing up and fishing in British Columbia and paints a beautiful picture of the Canadian Rockies. Derek is a poet with his words. I could just feel the nostalgia and sense those special times with his brother Chris Bird. It was reminiscent of Norman and Paul Maclean from A River Runs Through It. Derek is a founding Editor of Fly Fusion Magazine and writes the Editor's column called “Stream Lines” for each issue. He's a Co-Host for the Fly Fusion TV series as well as the Producer responsible for content acquisition for the International Fly Fishing Film Festival, also known as, IF4, which is seen around the world. Additionally, he's the author of a new book called, Last Summer On The Sage, that April Volkey says is a riveting tale, full of suspense that had me on the edge of my seat, anxiously turning each page to see what was around the next river bend. In this Part-Two episode we dive behind the scenes of the making of a fly fishing magazine. Being in media, I am inspired by both the creation of a quality fly fishing magazine and the interesting people that make it. We close talking about his great new novel that is getting rave reviews, Last Summer On The Sage…Enjoy! “Everybody's got a talent, but not everybody gets the opportunity. And thats what we're about; we're about opening that door and getting people through that door… that's what's missing in a lot of communities and society today… There's a lot of talented young people out there… The Raheem Sterling Foundation is about capturing that (talent) and making sure the opportunities are there.” This episode is a very special collaboration with The Olympic Mindset Podcast. I have teamed up with its host, Dominic Broad, to bring you this conversation with Chris Bird, CEO of the newly formed Raheem Sterling Foundation. Chris is also the Founder of EQ Esports, CEO of Sports Tours International, a Trustee of The Running Bee Foundation and in the late 90s was the COO of Manchester City Football Club. We speak with Chris about leadership and what it takes to have the mindset of a champion - not just in sport but in any walk of life. Chris shares his aspirations for The Raheem Sterling Foundation and how through its focus on education, employment and social mobility, it aims to create opportunities and change the lives of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. We have a fascinating conversation about levelling up and what that means in reality versus just in a political manifesto. And of course we also talk about football. Recorded August 2022.
The boardroom at Manchester City in the late 1990s and early 2000s was a fascinating insight into the turmoil going on at the club. While things on the pitch appeared to be going fairly smoothly, as the club bounced back from their lowest ever point in the third tier and back to the Premier League, behind the scenes there was tension and division. In 2019, David Mooney spoke to the former Chief Operating Officer to discuss what was happening at board level at the club at that time - including the divisions the transfer of Robbie Fowler caused. The team also discuss the Parkrun get together, Womens episode feedback, as well as a race review for recent races. This week we were delighted to have Chris Bird on to chat us through his own journey in running and also how he applies Canova training to himself and his athletes. Renato Canova is a hugely successful Italian running coach with a methodology that flies in the face of conventional wisdom. But as we've learnt time and time again, convention doesn't mean correct! With Canova training it's all about specificity. Training at around your chosen race pace and building up your tolerance over time. As Chris says, it's about feeding the baby! (in that you can't feed a baby a huge meal on day one!!). Thankfully Chris has agreed to come back on the show in a few weeks to put some meat on the bones! But for now, let's be happy we may have found a different way... that clearly works!

In this week's Hundred Proof Hangover, Greg and Chris are telling you all about the man who refused to stop fighting Germans no matter how hard the sweet, sweet lord tried to deter him. It's a story from WWII that you probably haven't heard. We can say that because we had never heard it and we are basically supercomputers fueled by distilled beverages. Big thanks to superfan, Chris Bird for recommending this one! Grab a chair, pull up to our towering mainframe and listen to our servos whir as we try and figure out this thing called human emotion. Hundred Proof Hangovers are short mini-episodes focusing on a smaller topic. As producers of Fly Fusion Magazine, Fly Fusion TV and the IF4 Film Festival, Jennifer and Chris Bird and their team are dedicated to putting out high-quality fly fishing media content in various formats. As a reader of Fly Fusion Magazine, a subscriber of Fly Fusion TV and an annual attendee of IF4, I’d say they are doing just that. It’s certainly overused to say “this was a fun conversation” but you can’t get within ten feet of Chris and Jenn without finding yourself in a great conversation, usually ending in some great laughter. The combination of fly fishing and media is something that fuels me. To get a close up look at the success of Fly Fusion was just a joy. Seeing a couple and team doing it right, doing it well and arguably doing the best, was more than I could have hoped for in this conversation. The nearest habitable world beyond our Solar System might be right on our doorstep . Scientists say their investigations of our closest star, Proxima Centauri, show it to have an Earth-sized planet orbiting about it. What's more, it is moving in a zone that would make liquid water on its surface a possibility. Gareth Mitchell hears from Guillem Anglada-Escudé whose "Pale Red Dot" team made the discovery and discusses what the "earth- like" claims actually mean. The planet hunters of today search for worlds beyond our Solar System. The planet hunters of a century or so ago, were still going crazy trying to find one more planet orbiting this sun. In The Hunt for Vulcan shortlisted for this year's Royal Society Book Prize, Prof.Thomas Levenson examines the craze known as Vulcan -mania, in the desperate search for another planet in an attempt to explain the odd orbit of the planet Mercury. But why did the phantom planet theory survive for so long? We examine observations from space of fleeting blue lakes in East Antarctica. They come and go with the seasons, forming during the warmer months of the south pole summer. As Amber Leeson of Lancaster University explains, many of the lakes then drain away, an effect already been found in Greenland but never, until now, in this part of the Antarctic. And their effect is cause for concern. Deep sea sharks are nearly impossible to track around the planet, however they inherit the chemistry of the things they eat. Researchers at Southampton University have worked backwards and by examining the chemistry of the sharks, they've been able to determine what things a shark has been eating but also where in the world it has been feeding. Chris Bird and Clive Trueman discuss how they're building up the first accurate pattern of their extraordinary movements. Presenter: Gareth Mitchell Producer: Adrian Washbourne.
