Laurie and Anna D try podcasting w/out their pal Claire this week because she is up to her eyeballs in work. Anna D follows up on her emotional plea for churches to say they stand with Black lives. Life Coach Laurie gives great recommendations on books and movies to help wake us up to racism and recognize it as a crisis. They also challenge you to work up the courage to do what's right even in the face of rejection. Finally, a disclaimer Anna D forgot to add in this podcast: The Catholic Church opposes racism and discrimination on the basis of race, and it teaches that racism is a sin. On this episode, we sit down with Donald Thompson and Jackie Ferguson of The Diversity Movement to have a conversation about race and how to be better allies in the wake of George Floyd. Donald Thompson is a friend and CEO of WalkWest. He serves on boards for several organizations in the fields of technology, marketing, sports and entertainment and is a mentor for Black Founders Google for Entrepreneurs Exchange. Jackie Ferguson is Director, Multicultural Programming at WalkWest and lead course writer for Diversity: Beyond the Checkbox. You can learn more at https://thediversitymovement.com/. The Diversity Movement has put together lots of resources, books for children, our offers and upcoming events that promote allyship and make us all stronger together. You can also purchase their module on Unconscious Bias for only $19 with 100% of the proceeds will go to North Carolina organizations that support, educate and empower underserved and marginalized communities in our fight for equality. Learn more: https://thediversitymovement.com/what-can-i-do/ Here are some of the ways I discussed how I am starting to become a better ally on the podcast as well: 1) Broaden your social media feed to more creators of color. Some Instagram users that I follow are @rachel.cargle, @theconsciouskid, @AustinChanning, and @LatashaMorrison. 2) Google whether your local police department outfits all on-duty officers with body worn cameras and requires them to be turned on when answering a call. If they don’t, write to your city government and advocate for it. 3) Read, learn, and get involved. You can get involved with Be The Bridge, Showing Up for Racial Justice, or Center for Racial Justice. I'm reading White Fragility and I'm Still Here about racial inequality. There are also good books for kids to begin the conversation: https://bookriot.com/2018/09/19/childrens-books-about-diversity/amp/ -- Thank you for being here! Would you consider leaving a review? Episode Transcript Guest: Austin Channing Brown In a time when nearly all institutions (schools, churches, universities, businesses) claim to value "diversity" in their mission statements...do our words matter? How do we do this as a people and more importantly how do we begin to reconcile with each other. Sometimes we need to realize what is the 'right medicine'. For readers who have engaged with America's legacy on race through the writing of Ta-Nehisi Coates and Michael Eric Dyson, I'm Still Here is an illuminating look at how white, middle-class, Evangelicalism has participated in an era of rising racial hostility, inviting the reader to confront apathy, recognize God's ongoing work in the world, and discover how blackness--if we let it--can save us all Bio: Austin earned a master’s degree in social justice from Marygrove College in Detroit, Michigan. Building on the foundation of her graduate work, she directed a short-term missions site on the west side of Chicago, creating interactive opportunities for youth to engage issues of poverty, injustice. She also served on staff with Willow Creek Community Church, developing strategies and programming around multiculturalism. She then served as resident director and multicultural liaison for three years at Calvin College, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, working closely with millennials. It's a battle of the ages: mid '00s against mid '10s sitcoms featuring Raven-Symoné as a psychic! On episode 29 of Black Girl Squee, hosts Inda Lauryn (@indascorner) and Didi Jenning (@dustdaughter) celebrate friend of the show, Savannah J. Frierson's new release, Manna Tree (https://t.co/IXYpWe813g ) and the re-release of Julie Dash's "Daughters of the Dust". Inda launches a great new Teespring Campaign here: https://t.co/RGv7nZDxKf . Instead of recapping HTGAWM we talk about the disturbing pattern of characters of color being killed off TV shows for shock value alone. In Squee Queens we celebrate the lives of Gwen Ifill and Sharon Jones. There's repeat nominees on DWIDP and another timely Womanist Vocab word. Goodbye 2015, Hello 2016!For the first show of the new year, I am giving a quick recap of where we've been on this crazy little podcast, and where I want to go with things in the new year. It's time to look back on the year that's past and forward into my plans and goals for the podcast in 2016.•Found Spreaker App for Android, allowed live streaming and recording of a podcast from my phone. (totally not a paid plug)•July 22, 2015- Spur of the moment broadcast first Odd Dad Out Podcast live from my car while driving home from work. (My apologies to anyone who's listened to it.) I had no clue what I was doing, and used a Skyrim ringtone and canned audience for the intro. That actually stuck for a few shows.•August 6- Episode 3: "Rowdy" show, recorded the night before son #4 was born. First time actually using notes for a show. Took 3 tries to record and left me completely exhausted the next morning when it was time to have the baby.•Episode 4: First and so far only show with a co-host. Recorded show with my wife and realized how much I need better recording equipment if I'm gonna have anybody else on the show.•Hiatus- After Episode 5, which was my strongest show up to that point, maybe still, the combination of new baby, work, 3 other boys, and plain old writer's block resulted in an unintended 2 month break from recording.•November- Show resumes with the appropriately titled "I'm Still Here." I've got a new resolve to not Pod-fade and promise to get on a regular release schedule.•Enter Flu Season- Plagues of sickness overtake our house in a seemingly endless chain of rotating illness lasting for weeks and derailing the regular recording schedule.-NOW-I've now got a mixer, 2 desk mics, 2 headsets, more recording software (and know kinda how to use it,) and a solid intro format for the show going forward. This gives me both a static studio to record and a mobile setup for recording elsewhere.-Going Forward-•Format changes- Gonna start actually planning out the shows somewhat and creating better show notes (like these.)•Upgrades-•Aiming to get the official OddDadOutPodcast.com up and running soon.•Want to upgrade my media hosting and website to have more space for shows and a better web presence.•I'm gonna try to be more active on social media.•Guest co-hosts- I want to start having guest co-hosts join me from time to time. I don't do interviews, but having somebody else to talk to would definitely be an improvement.
It's been 2 months since the last episode, but that is all in the past now. I'm back and ranty and ready to get back in the ring for another go. *Note: 2 In-show references to sound effects that did not show up on final recording, my bad. #idon'tedit

Help support this podcast! >> As Joaquin Phoenix once said, "I'M STILL HERE." Mockumentary and hip-hop career to follow shortly. (Seriously, though, I've realized I turn out new episodes about every 10 days instead of strictly weekly. I hope that is okay with you.) Either way, welcome to Episode 009 of the "Write Now" podcast. Small note: If my voice sounds weird in this episode, it is because I have both a new microphone and a head cold. Life is fun like that. In order to say "yes" to writing, you have to say "no" to other stuff. When we were little, our teachers told us, "You can be anything!" But my ambitious little brain interpreted that to mean, "You can be everything!" Which is simply not true. Because despite our best efforts, there are only 24 hours in a day. And we can only fill those 24 hours with 24 hours worth of activity, from sleeping to going to work, cooking, driving the kids to clarinet lessons, reading, grocery shopping, tuning up your bicycle, rewatching all 144 episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, washing behind your ears, going to church meetings, and yes, writing. So if you're going to say "yes" to writing... well, sometimes that means saying "no" to other stuff. Fun stuff. Important stuff. Stuff society deems essential. And that can be hard. You are enough. When we start to examine our limits, we begin to feel... well. Kinda crappy. Kinda small. Kinda worthless. We realize we can't do everything we want to do. We realize we have limits, that we'll never be smart enough or fast enough or strong enough to do it all. But while you can't do everything, you can do anything. You have the power to choose how you spend your time. You have all the permission you need to call yourself a writer. You are a whole person, however broken you might feel, and I want to reassure you that whatever that "anything" is that you want to do? You are enough to do it. So the question becomes -- what are you willing to sacrifice for your art? What can you do within the limits you've been given? The book of the week. When I was instructed to read The Best Yes by Lysa TerKeurst for a women's group that I belong to, I'm kind of embarrassed to admit I rolled my eyes. I don't usually read a lot of self-help books, and the cover of this one was just so... Pinterest-y. But as I read through this book (which has a Christian bent to it, if that turns you on or off to it), I realized -- I needed help. I was overstressed, overbooked, overwhelmed, and racked by guilt. In short, things were LESS THAN OPTIMAL. I'm not going to say this book fixed me or changed my life, but it did help me to see more clearly all of the self-destructive things I do to myself when I say "yes" to too many things out of a people-pleasing mindset, and it reminded me that it's OK to prioritize my commitments and (kindly, graciously) say "no" to requests. In this episode of EXPRESS YOURSELF - I'm Still Here: with guest Dr. Jan Seward: DearJames™ and Dr. Jan delve deeper into the Ego, it's positive and negative effects in your life: and how to ultimately transcend it.Since the beginning of time: the ego mind has played a vital, yet often times unrelenting role in our human experiences and development. As a major part of "the personality:" that portion controlled by our mind: while working to amass multiple layers of "identity:" the ego seeks to know and control our every thought, action, inaction and being. It is only by "Surrendering to the Soul," that we begin to understand, accept and embrace our deepest desires: our truest nature: our Soul.By transitioning from an ego based to a soul based: led life: we come to fully embrace the limitless magnitude of our eternal being.Presence of mind: leads to awareness of the duality within each of us: Ego (personality/identity) Vs. Soul: (soul/source connection/energy being). And the vital need to transcend the ego and lead with our Soul-Source divinity: for the former knows little and the latter knows all.By embracing and leading from the soul: you learn to quell your ego mind: thus allowing your ego-state self to realize "I'm Still Here."
What happens when "Follies" star Elaine Paige sits down to interview her co-star Ron Raines? Listen now to the lively discussion about everything "Follies" and Sondheim: his lyrics, Sondheim as teacher, and the difficulty in performing "Sweeney Todd", among other topics. Sondheim isn't the only show in town. Paige and Raines also talk about balancing life and art, musical theatre vs. opera, the economics of Broadway, career longevity in the theatre, "The King and I", transitioning from film/television acting to acting on the stage, and Paige's most embarrassing stage moment while performing in "Evita". Of course, it all goes back to "Follies" and its cast and why it's so hard for Raines to follow Paige's showstopper "I'm Still Here!" Original air date - January 4, 2012.

Lately John and I have been favoring the "live" recording process (we go to a restaurant or coffee shop, find a table, set down the recorder and begin), in part because Skype can be, um ... kinda problematic. And eating and drinking while talking comes easy to us. So for the time being we're sticking with it. Live recording, that is. And eating and drinking, which I'm told is helpful. Again this week we recorded the show at Panera Bread, next to the AMC Fenway 10 theater in Boston. The films discussed are Little Fockers, Gulliver's Travels and the Norweigan flick Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale. Plus we offer our picks of the week. For me it's Cyrus, I'm Still Here and Troll 2 on Blu-ray. For John it's A&E's Billy the Exterminator: Season One. The total running time is about 1 hour.Visit the Post-Movie Podcast online at Post-Movie.netIntro music by Stereo Soul Future. http:www.stereosoulfuture.comQuestions? This week on Movie B.S. with Bayer and Snider the boys had to go see a midnight screening of "Resident Evil: Afterlife" in 3D, because that's the kind of dedicated film critics they are. The 3D is great, the movie is crap. Then, Bayer tries to talk to Snider about "I'm Still Here" without giving away any details. It's difficult. The last film they review is "Centurion" (they did not save the best for last). The boys also recap their Top 5 movies of the summer, and Snider talks about his trip to the Telluride Film Festival. Plus, there was enough time to play Pitch Me, this week starring Betty White and Dan Aykroyd. The QOTW this week is "most memorable movie accent?" in tribute to "The Town."
