In this episode, Ben and Jack take a close look at Shane Meadows' This Is England, a film that confronts the complexities of race, identity, and nationalism in 1980s Britain. They unpack how the film depicts the horrors of racism through art - and whether such portrayals are a necessary form of truth-telling, or if they risk exploiting the trauma of those affected. They delve into the long shadow of Margaret Thatcher, exploring how her policies reshaped northern, working-class communities, and how the film captures the fallout. The episode also shines a light on the film's female characters, whose presence challenges and deepens the male-dominated narrative, offering much-needed perspective and emotional grounding. The discussion then turns to the danger of disenfranchised masculinity - how lost, angry young men become vulnerable to radicalisation and draws parallels with the rise of far-right movements today. Have we really learned from the past, or are we repeating it in new forms?A timely and urgent conversation about history, identity, and the power of film to hold a mirror to society. Also in this episode: Ben responds to the backlash surrounding his A Minecraft Movie review, and Jack passionately argues why the latest season of The White Lotus isn't just the best one yet, but a near-flawless piece of television. If you find the episode thought-provoking, please consider rating, reviewing, and subscribing to help others find the podcast. Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by the excellent actor and long overdue guest ANDREW ELLIS!Long overdue in many ways, but directly as Pip gradually ticks off the cast of the This Is England on his database... Also of course, as mentioned in this episode, with Stephen Graham being the spiritual godfather of this podcast, it all makes infinite sense. Andrew has been putting in the work over the years and has kind of grown up on both sides of the camera, with a perfect loop of life feeding the art and art feeding life in a balance that has taken a while to achieve. So it's great to hear things are in a nice spot, as well hearing about the past dalliances with podcasting (Overrated Everything), parent life, the said importance of living a life off screen, and his many roles stemming from Gadget in This Is England. He has a bunch of work in the pipeline, including 'The Walk-In' (mentioned in the episode - in case you heard it as "the walking"!), so keep an eye open for all those - but in the meantime, enjoy the present, as Andrew joins in the fun.

Bob Cratchit. Ron Weasley. Daniel Blake. Working class characters are often painted as humble folk, morally pure and deserving of our sympathy. But what if they're...not?Join us as we discuss truly progressive portrayals of the working class in film. Instead of patronising, what if films instead gave people agency over their own lives? Instead of portraying poverty as a purifying force, what if films were honest about the negative consequences of oppression on the subject? What if – and bear with me here – but what if working class people were sometimes bad? We start our first episode of 2024 with a quick discussion on the Golden Globes and Academy Awards, before jumping into a chat about a number of films, some which we think do the working class a disservice, and others that we feel are much more honest and human in their portrayals. Up for discussion are:The films of Ken Loach and Shane Meadows, including I, Daniel Blake (2016), Sorry We Missed You (2019) and This Is England (2006);Meantime (1983);Saltburn (2023);The films of Bong Joon-ho, including Snowpiercer (2013) and Parasite (2019);Fallen Leaves (2023);Red Rocket (2021);Harry Potter;Pride (2014);The Royle Family (TV sitcom); The Full Monty (1997);Brechtian theatre; The films of Jean-Luv Godard;Together (2000).Support the show

_______________________________________ (00:00) Cold Opener, Moin und jede Menge Anekdoten (26:28) The Killer (59:11) Hausaufgabe: Spring Breakers (1:10:32) Hausaufgabe: Decision To Leave (1:20:57) Hausaufgabe: Dirndljagd am Kilimandscharo (1:35:35) This Ain't California (2:09:44) This Is England (2:33:01) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (2:59:31) Ausblick auf die nächste Folge (3:05:36) Spoilerpart zu The Killer _______________________________________ Hier kannst du uns überall finden: iTunes/Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/2TgWvY3 Spotify: https://spoti.fi/34jfB68 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/JahierFilmePodcast RSS-Feed: https://jahierfilme.podcaster.de/ Instagram: @jahierfilme Twitter: @jahierfilme Linktree: https://linktr.ee/jahierfilme _______________________________________ Alle unsere Filme im Überblick: https://letterboxd.com/jahierfilme/lists/

THE WORLD IN 14 FILMS-Festival in Berlin. Demnach: Peace. Und bis zum nächsten Mal. First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on December 4th 2022 Our old friend SANDY McGREGOR got in touch recently to point out that, amidst all of the ballyhoo and hullaballoo surrounding the centenary of one particular British broadcasting institution, it was easy for shows that talk about television like this one to forget that another television Channel had passed a significant milestone this year. Because, on the very weekend the BBC was proudly marking one hundred years of existence, CHANNEL FOUR also reached an impressive and remarkable anniversary, with this young and once troublesome upstart becoming forty years old. This is actually slightly worrying to me, as I remember dashing home on its very first evening of transmission, just so that I could see what seemed like a paradigm shift in British Broadcasting at the time, and, with apologies to CHANNEL FIVE and all that it does, witness the birth of perhaps the last great national broadcaster, and thereby discovered COUNTDOWN. Those next few years would certainly try to give a brand new perspective on the world to its viewers. Often challenging, sometimes controversial, and sometimes looking as if they were making it up as they go along, CHANNEL FOUR staggered along, often with the derision of the tabloids ringing in its ears, until, very suddenly, it suddenly started to gain a certain amount of respectability and become very much the discerning channel of choice, at least amongst a more youthful demographic. In its early years, and indeed throughout its entire history, this enfant terrible of national terrestrial television channels has challenged the status quo and tried to create a genuine alternative to what's on the other side, and explore the alternative culture in a manner that outlying broadcasters like ourselves can only admire, and we genuinely appreciate the fact that it still does. And, for making much of its back catalogue available, for free, streaming on ALL4, it is still pushing boundaries, which is much appreciated by the likes of us. Programmes like THE WORD, THE TUBE, THE BIG BREAKFAST, VIC REEVES BIG NIGHT OUT, and BIG BROTHER seemed to change our relationship with television itself, and many high profile dramas, which existed for a long time alongside the challenging twenty-one year run of BROOKSIDE, like A VERY BRITISH COUP, GBH, QUEER AS FOLK, THIS IS ENGLAND, NATIONAL TREASURE and IT'S A SIN, have proved that, creatively, this has truly become a channel to be reckoned with. There were also a whole raft of fine comedies; DESMONDS, SMACK THE PONY, FATHER TED, PEEP SHOW, and excellent current affairs programmes like DISPATCHES and the sublime CHANNEL FOUR NEWS still trying in its own way to speak truth to power. Whilst CHANNEL FIVE did come along later on, it never felt quite as significant a moment to me, perhaps because it took a long time to become fully national, but also because television itself had changed since the birth of CHANNEL FOUR, and national free-to-air programming was under threat from the satellite, and later still, the streaming services. These days, unfortunately, certain people amongst the POWERS THAT BE, perhaps some of whom tend to instinctively distrust those alternative or youthful demographics, have CHANNEL FOUR in their sights, and want to change the unique way it operates, despite not appearing to actually understand quite how it operates, and, as ever, when people with power who have vested interests get involved, it doesn't seem as if they intend to change it for the better. Anyway, SANDY quite rightly pointed out that we ought to do a programme about CHANNEL FOUR and put it out before the actual anniversary year was over, so here we are, trawling through another newspaper top forty list, to wish it all the best from all of us here at VISION ON SOUND. Our feminist picks of this year’s Glasgow Film Festival. Anna delves into personal punk rock doc Poly Styrene: I Am A Cliché and witty coming-of-age Sweetheart with cast and crew. First, Celeste Bell reveals what it was like to make a film about her mother, the punk icon and X-Ray Spex frontwoman, Poly Styrene. Weaving archive footage with Celeste’s narration, the documentary unpicks Styrene’s eccentric and multi-layered life, and explores the effect fame had on life at home. Celeste shares the challenges of piecing together such a personal film and how the process changed her relationship with her late mother. Next, writer-director Marley Morrison and actor Ella-Rae Smith join Anna to discuss crushes and caravan parks in Sweetheart. Marley pinpoints where the film draws on personal experiences and explains the importance of creating an uplifting lesbian love story. From Friday night discos to the magic of no phone signal, Ella reminisces about the fun they had behind the scenes. Ian McEwan's new novel, Nutshell, is a murder mystery set in a grand, decrepit Georgian home in London. It's based on Shakespeare's Hamlet, and features a pregnant woman, her estranged husband, and his brother who is now the woman's lover. He explains why he chose to tell the story from the point of view of the foetus.Things to Come is a new film by the 35-year old French director Mia Hansen-Love. Her previous features have been semi-autobiographical films about people of her own age, however this one explores the life of an aging woman whose husband leaves her, mother dies, and whose reputation as a philosophy professor is starting to fade. All of which offer her a kind of freedom. Briony Hanson reviews. At a time when elitism in acting is a hot topic, Kirsty visits The Television Workshop, a BAFTA winning acting school in Nottingham which has been giving opportunities to young actors from a less privileged background since 1983.
