Ruth Anne Wolfe has been passionate about social justice in her neighborhood since her daughter attended Pleasant Ridge Montessori in 2006. Between 2006 and 2012, she learned the challenges faced by a public neighborhood school. This experience was the fertile ground for her work today at Community Happens Here. Her journey has been a long and interesting path starting from her mother's sheep farm to working in Japan, to becoming a Japanese Interpreter in Cincinnati, to getting a law degree and practicing law, to motherhood, and from there to an awakened sense of community work. In this episode Ruth and Ann discuss local schools, social justice, and making change in your community by making personal sacrifices. Podcast highlights include:How her daughter's enrollment in a local Montessori school motivated her to make sure all students had what other had. From starting a foundation to help raise money for the school to buying supplies for the teachers and helping all of the students, Ruth Anne did what it took to support students and teachers. Over time the school became the school everyone wanted their children to go to.Her realization that if she wanted her community to change, it had to start with her.Why she created Community Happens Here, a community space where people are able to meet, entrepreneurs can network, and community happens over a cup of tea or coffee. Just because a community is wealthier doesn't mean the community is more connected or care for each other. The quote that got me? "We can either be a service provider or we can figure out how to stop poverty and other social problems."Teaching people entrepreneurship and the entrepreneurship mindset helps alleviate poverty. Ruth shares that if you can teach someone how to own their own business you don't need to give away food. That person will be able to take care of themselves. Why is it worth doing community work? The Bible exists as a narrative. Dr. Ruth Anne Reese has spent her life helping students of the Bible better understand the larger Biblical story. Misinterpretation runs rampant when Bible students don't place the Biblical texts in their larger context. Ruth Anne and Lynn talk through accessible ways to remember the Biblical narrative. They even work through some difficult passages that some have used to manipulate women into unhealthy forms of submission. Treksphere staff writer Ruth Anne Amsden joins Kevin again for a very personal glimpse into her background and Star Trek's influence on her life. Growing up in a fundamentalist Christian sect, Ruth was told that women had no voice, no agency, and no leadership roles. But in Star Trek, she saw women who were equals, had important roles, and spoke their minds. She was inspired by them and by her mother and grandmother—who broke the rules to smuggle Star Trek to her in the form of clandestine television viewings, audio cassettes, and novels—to learn to be an independent woman and rescue her faith from an oppressive form of religion. It's a wonderful story you'll want to hear! Reese is an expert on the General Epistles, and has written commentaries on 1--2 Peter and Jude (both available on Amazon), and serves on the board of the highly esteemed Institute for Biblical Research. We had a delightful time talking about one of my favorite books of the NT, the letter from #James to Jewish believers in Jesus.

For London-born Auschwitz survivor Leon Greenman it was after the Holocaust that he said his nightmare really began. Every day was an agonising struggle for survival. Leon passed away in 2008 at the grand age of 97. Ruth-Anne Lenga, was privileged to be with him at that moment. Ruth-Anne's long friendship with Leon gave her – and in turn the Centre – a rare insight into how he lived with the trauma of the past and what drove him to become a force for good despite the suffering he had endured. Leon's mission was to bear witness so that atrocities, such as the Holocaust, would never happen again. He spoke to thousands and thousands of people, especially young people, over his lifetime, and his testimony and humour shaped many of their lives. He also spoke to many teachers-in-training at IOE, UCL's Faculty of Education and Society, and the experience left a lasting impression that has stayed with them through their careers. — Kontakt: https://ruthannebyrne.at/ https://www.facebook.com/RuthAnneByrneAutorin/ https://www.instagram.com/ruthannebyrne/

Globally, there appears to be a rise in hatred threatening to destroy societal harmony and the foundations of peace. Against this backdrop, this panel discussion, held last year to commemorate International Tolerance Day, features leading practitioners who are working on identifying ways to promote societal cohesion and democracy using human rights as a beacon. Panellists speak to a broad range of issues related to tolerance and intolerance, especially on the intersections between freedom of expression, freedom of religion or belief and the rights of minorities, and consider conceptual challenges in addressing ‘hate speech’ and concrete examples of good practice. Professor Sir Malcolm Evans outlines the relationship between freedom of expression and freedom of religion or belief, focusing on the challenges imposed by the spread of ‘hate speech’, and highlights the core elements of a human rights-based approach. Malcolm is Professor of Public International Law at the University of Bristol. He is a member and Chair of the UN Subcommittee for the Prevention of Torture and is also currently a member of the Commission on Religious Education established by the Religious Education Council.

Simona Cruciani highlights the role of the United Nations in addressing hate speech and preventing incitement to discrimination, hostility and violence, focusing on the recent launch of the UN Strategy and Plan of Action on Hate Speech. Simona is Political Affairs Officer at the United Nations Office on Genocide Prevention and the Responsibility to Protect (OSAPG) where she runs the Global Program with Religious Leaders on Preventing Incitement to Violence that could lead to Atrocity Crimes. Promoting tolerance is an aim many teachers cite for Holocaust education, but the subject is challenging for both teachers and students. Dr Ruth-Anne Lenga will discuss these challenges and how those at UCL's Centre for Holocaust Education are working to respond to them. Ruth-Anne is Programme Director at the Centre for Holocaust Education at the University College of London and provides strategic leadership and management to the Centre. She is a UK delegate to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance and advises many organisations including the UK Holocaust Memorial Foundation.

Andrew Copson of Humanists UK speaks on the right to freedom of religion or belief and the non-religious, surveying the global situation for nonreligious people’s enjoyment of this right and discussing why the rhetoric of ‘religious freedom’ needs to be replaced with renewed focus on the human right to freedom of religion or belief. Andrew has been Chief Executive of Humanists UK since 2010 and President of Humanists International since 2015. His most recent book, Secularism: A Very Short Introduction, was published in July 2019 by Oxford University Press.

Professor Paul Hunt responds to the mosque massacres of 15th March 2019 in Christchurch, New Zealand. The attacks have forced New Zealanders to confront Islamophobia, racism and antisemitism. Paul considers the role of national human rights institutions in responding to such events and, more broadly, in promoting social cohesion. Paul has lived and undertaken human rights work, in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Aotearoa; he became the New Zealand Chief Human Rights Commissioner in January 2019. In 2000, he was appointed professor at Essex University School of Law and Human Rights Centre. Paul also served as an independent expert on the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (1999-2002) and as UN Special Rapporteur on the right to the highest attainable standard of health (2002-2008). This discussion was moderated by Dr Ahmed Shaheed, who is Senior Lecturer in the School of Law and co-Deputy Director of the Human Rights Centre. He is also currently the UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief.

Ruth-Anne Eisler is a business writer, editor, and corporate communications specialist working with a wide range of clients, including speech-language pathology, creative arts, animal welfare, political candidates, non-profits, and governmental organizations. As a former professional musician and legal researcher, Ruth-Anne leverages her unique background by converging artistry with logic, producing bespoke solutions for clients who require clear, assured, and human-centered communications. Ruth-Anne Eisler studied music and became a professional classical musician early in her career.  She reflects on those younger years as being a difficult time in which she spent a lot of time alone practicing and scrambling to get paid work.  In order to gain greater stability and security, she turned to other areas of interest, law, and writing, obtaining a paralegal certificate.  After several years working in that field, she wanted to do something more that would also enable her to be available to her young son, so she started her own corporate communications business.  She credits working with a coach toward helping her to make decisions that moved her forward and into action. In this episode we discuss: How Ruth-Anne’s first career was studying music as a professional classical musician. Her experience as a musician and discovering the downsides including practicing alone and having to scramble to find paid work. How she learned to gain greater stability and security by turning to areas of interest she had previously pushed aside like law and writing. Her love of learning, and how she expects she will always be taking a course of some sort. The transition she made into legal research and then her move away from legal research when her son was born and she wanted to be home with him, leading her into launching her own corporate communications business. How Ruth-Anne credits her dad, a civil engineer, as a role model because of his skillful planning and his ability to put plans into action, even if it took him time to accomplish them. In this episode I talk to Ruth-Anne Renaud.  I just loved our conversation. She is such a thoughtful, nurturing and wise person.   She is someone I really admire because she lives her life with such PURPOSE.  You don’t have to know her very long to begin to understand what she values. Because she really LIVES her values through her work and personal life.   Some of those values include, empowering women, friends and family, access to education, cycling, personal growth, empathy and connection. You just see those values and more shine through. We talk about what shaped her outlook on life and how she switched gears and made a career pivot so that she could apply her skills and knowledge to the non-profit sector And we talk about what helped her tune in to her personal truth so that she was able to take action and work towards the causes she believes in. In this episode, Ruth Anne Robbins, Distinguished Clinical Professor of Law at Rutgers Law School, discusses her influential 2004 article "Painting with Print: Incorporating Concepts of Typographic and Layout Design into the Text of Legal Writing Documents" and her 2010 followup article, "Conserving the Canvas: Reducing the Environmental Footprint of Legal Briefs by Re-imagining Court Rules and Document Design Strategies." Robbins observes that the design of a legal document affects its readability, and argues that many courts impose rules that reduce the readability of documents. Among other things, she observes that ALLCAPS headings and monospaced fonts reduce readability. She explains how legal writers can increase the effectiveness of their documents through better design. Judge Easterbrook of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit was impressed by Robbins's article, and featured it on the court's website for many years. Robbins is on Twitter at @RA_Robbins.Keywords: legal writing, visual, fonts, persuasion, lawyering See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In the Lord's Supper, or communion, the people of God ascend to heaven, and heaven comes down to earth, as the Holy Spirit eucharizes the bread and wine so that we receive Christ. In Holy Communion, heaven and earth meet. But before we stylized the sacrament to make it expedient for large worship gatherings, the early church had some very distinct practices surrounding the experience.
