Proclaiming the Mighty Acts
Ruth Anne Wolfe has been passionate about social justice in her neighborhood since her daughter attended Pleasant Ridge Montessori in 2006. Between 2006 and 2012, she learned the challenges faced by a public neighborhood school. This experience was the fertile ground for her work today at Community Happens Here. Her journey has been a long and interesting path starting from her mother's sheep farm to working in Japan, to becoming a Japanese Interpreter in Cincinnati, to getting a law degree and practicing law, to motherhood, and from there to an awakened sense of community work. In this episode Ruth and Ann discuss local schools, social justice, and making change in your community by making personal sacrifices. Podcast highlights include:How her daughter's enrollment in a local Montessori school motivated her to make sure all students had what other had. From starting a foundation to help raise money for the school to buying supplies for the teachers and helping all of the students, Ruth Anne did what it took to support students and teachers. Over time the school became the school everyone wanted their children to go to.Her realization that if she wanted her community to change, it had to start with her.Why she created Community Happens Here, a community space where people are able to meet, entrepreneurs can network, and community happens over a cup of tea or coffee. Just because a community is wealthier doesn't mean the community is more connected or care for each other. The quote that got me? "We can either be a service provider or we can figure out how to stop poverty and other social problems."Teaching people entrepreneurship and the entrepreneurship mindset helps alleviate poverty. Ruth shares that if you can teach someone how to own their own business you don't need to give away food. That person will be able to take care of themselves. Why is it worth doing community work? Ruth tells us, "because its also good for you"!NEW RESOURCE: Curious about how to rev up your coalition and truly engage your community? The Bible exists as a narrative. Dr. Ruth Anne Reese has spent her life helping students of the Bible better understand the larger Biblical story. Misinterpretation runs rampant when Bible students don't place the Biblical texts in their larger context. Ruth Anne and Lynn talk through accessible ways to remember the Biblical narrative. They even work through some difficult passages that some have used to manipulate women into unhealthy forms of submission. Treksphere staff writer Ruth Anne Amsden joins Kevin again for a very personal glimpse into her background and Star Trek's influence on her life. Growing up in a fundamentalist Christian sect, Ruth was told that women had no voice, no agency, and no leadership roles. But in Star Trek, she saw women who were equals, had important roles, and spoke their minds. She was inspired by them and by her mother and grandmother—who broke the rules to smuggle Star Trek to her in the form of clandestine television viewings, audio cassettes, and novels—to learn to be an independent woman and rescue her faith from an oppressive form of religion. It's a wonderful story you'll want to hear! Today I sit down with Dr. Ruth Anne Reese, Professor of New Testament at Asbury Theological Seminary where she also serves as the Chair of the New Testament Department. Dr. Reese is a perennial favorite among graduate and post-graduate students at Asbury, excelling at teaching both the technical knowledge inherent to studying the #NewTestament as well as being sensitive to the pastoral issues that arise in the NT. Reese is an expert on the General Epistles, and has written commentaries on 1--2 Peter and Jude (both available on Amazon), and serves on the board of the highly esteemed Institute for Biblical Research. We had a delightful time talking about one of my favorite books of the NT, the letter from #James to Jewish believers in Jesus.
For London-born Auschwitz survivor Leon Greenman it was after the Holocaust that he said his nightmare really began. Every day was an agonising struggle for survival. Leon passed away in 2008 at the grand age of 97. Ruth-Anne Lenga, was privileged to be with him at that moment. Ruth-Anne's long friendship with Leon gave her – and in turn the Centre – a rare insight into how he lived with the trauma of the past and what drove him to become a force for good despite the suffering he had endured. Leon's mission was to bear witness so that atrocities, such as the Holocaust, would never happen again. He spoke to thousands and thousands of people, especially young people, over his lifetime, and his testimony and humour shaped many of their lives. He also spoke to many teachers-in-training at IOE, UCL's Faculty of Education and Society, and the experience left a lasting impression that has stayed with them through their careers. To mark Holocaust Memorial Day 2022, we have created this podcast reflecting on Leon's life and work, and the daily trauma of his survival. Presented by Ruth-Anne Lenga Associate Professor (Teaching) & Programme Director, UCL Centre for Holocaust Education. In 1980, Michele Dee Gates was 13 years old and living in Oregon when she was suspected of drowning a four year old girl named Ruth Anne O'Neil, known as Ruthie to her family and friends. Because Michele was Ruth Anne's babysitter and she had taken her for ice cream that day, she was brought in for questioning alone on two separate occasions. Police confronted her on some inconsistent statements she had given, after which, she admitted to drowning little Ruth Anne.
