Setsubun in Japan is a spring cleaning festival which helps to cleanse the home of evil spirits, something which, from an American perspective, would incorporate elements of both Imbolc, spring cleaning, and Halloween. Hinamatsuri is an event to wish for the healthy growth of girls. It is also called "Momo no Sekku" (Peach Festival) because March 3rd in the lunar calendar was the time when peach blossoms were in bloom. こんにちは。 ジェニのピカピカ日本語へようこそ。 Today I will provide more information about Setsubun. One of the highlights of Setsubun is the bean-throwing. The beans are thrown while shouting loudly, "Oni wa soto, fuku wa uchi, demons out happiness in. 鬼 (devil) 福 (Happiness) Beans must be roasted before being thrown. The beans are basically a symbol of the old year, to be purged and thrown away with impurities and misfortune, to ward off evil spirits, and if they sprout, it is said that "people will be eaten by demons" or "bad things will happen to the house". In Japanese, it is also said to have the following meaning. 豆を炒る Mameoiru = roast beans 魔目を射る Mameoiru = cast an evil eye on = to purge evil spirits And it's not just the scattering of the beans that children enjoy. After the bean-throwing ceremony, it is customary to eat as many beans as one's age, so they enjoy eating as many beans as their age. The meaning of eating beans on Setsubun is that roasted soybeans are called "Fuku-mame福豆". Eating as many of these Fukumame as one's age is a wish for a healthy and happy life, and if one takes in the good fortune into one's body, one will be able to live a healthy life without getting sick. One more thing to eat during Setsubun is Ehoumaki恵方巻. On the night of Setsubun, it is said that if you eat the whole Ehoumaki without saying a word, your wish will come true. What is "towards the direction of Ehou"? Ehou is the direction in which the goddess of good fortune resides, and this direction is determined by the ten signs of the Chinese zodiac of the year, so it is quite difficult to determine. At Sensouji Temple 浅草寺, a bean-throwing ceremony called Fukujyunomai　福聚の舞 is held with entertainers and other performers. During the Setsubun Festival, the Toshiotoko 年男 throws beans in the hope that they will dispel misfortune and evil. After that, the Seven Gods 七福神 of Good Fortune Dance is performed to praise the good fortune and virtue of Kannon 観音, and is said to have been taken from the legend of the Seven Gods of Good Fortune. In addition to Sensoji Temple, Setsubun Festival is also held at shrines and temples in various places such as Nishiarai Daishi 西新井大師 and Shimoshinmei Jinjya　下神明神社, where entertainers are invited to throw beans. This episode talks about the Japanese tradition Setsubun. Setsubun is the day before risshun, the first day of spring in the old calendar. According to the new calendar, setsubun falls on February 3rd or 4th. It is Japanese tradition to scatter roasted beans on this day to chase way evils and troubles. People toss beans around inside and outside their houses chanting, “Demons out, good luck in!” Tradition holds that you will be healthy for the rest of the year if you eat the same number of beans as your age. On setsubun, shrines host bean-scattering events, archery demonstrations, and other ceremonies to drive away evil. In contrast, there are some areas in Japan that have shrines dedicated to a demon god, or that have legends of demons helping humans. In these areas, people may scatter their beans chanting, “In with demons!” The tradition of tossing beans on setsubun is a popular form of the ceremony of tsuina, a court ceremony that began in the Heian era (794-1185 CE). Cee Bee also talked about the book Hermetica, The Lost Wisdom of the Pharaohs, chapter 7.  In this chapter Hermes teaches us how to see God by contemplating his creation. When we look at the world only with our physical eyes, God is nowhere to be seen. But if we look with our thoughts, we see with spiritual understanding. Suddenly God is everywhere. In this ecstatic state everything we see and touch is known to be a part of God, and we understand that God's whole purpose in creating the world was so that through it we could see him. Ask Atum to flash a ray of his illumination into your awareness, giving you the power to grasp in thought his sublime Being. For the invisible may only be seen with thoughts — which are themselves invisible. I read only three of four lines on the next time.  The sun is the greatest god in the heavens — a king to whom all the others pay homage.  Yet, this mighty god humbly submits to have smaller stars circle above him. Who is it that he obeys with awe? Each star travels its appointed range of space. Why don't all stars run the same course? Who is it who has assigned to each its place? The Bear revolves around herself and carries around with her the whole Cosmos. Who is it that appointed her this task? Who is it that fixed the Earth, and confined the sea within its shores? こんにちは。 ジェニのピカピカ日本語へようこそ。 Today, I'd like to introduce you to Setsubun, a traditional spring event in Japan. Setsubun節分” is the day before "Risshun立春”, "Rikka立夏”, "Risshu立秋”, and "Rittou立冬”, which are the turning points of the seasons. Setsubun is the day before the seasonal milestones of Risshun, Rikka, Risshu, and Rittou. In the lunar calendar, the year begins in spring, so the day before Risshun (the first day of spring) is considered to be very important, and now it is widely recognized that the day before Risshun = Setsubun (the first day of spring). The custom of driving away demons is said to be based on a court event called Tsuina追儺, which originated from a Chinese custom. The Chinese event that is said to be the origin of the event was in the twelfth month of the lunisolar calendar. It was the time when winter turned into spring, and it was believed that demons would bring sickness and misfortune to the people, so Mamemaki豆まき is said to have originated as a way to drive out the demons, send off the old year, and welcome in the new year, the spring spirit, and good fortune. 節分　Setsubun 立春 Rissyun 春まつり　Harumatsuri 豆まき Mamemaki Thank you for listening to me today. In February 2019, primary school children from Matsubara City in Osaka, Japan wrote recorded and edited English podcasts on topics of interest to send out to the world. In this podcast, one boy tells us about a Japanese traditional holiday called setsubun (節分), which also happens to be his birthday.

February 3rd is Setsubun in Japan and it's not just the day before spring according to the lunar calendar, it's also the day that oni prowl the streets and children must pelt them roasted soybeans to insure good luck for the coming year.
