There is a growing movement against Japan's controversial policy to export carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions to other countries, particularly in the Global South. Spearheading this movement is Ayumi Fukakusa, the Deputy Executive Director of Friends of the Earth Japan, who initiated a global petition earlier this year, raising serious concerns over the implications of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) projects, especially for countries like Malaysia, which has signed multiple agreements with Japanese corporations. At the heart of this debate are the risks of long-term liability, environmental hazards, and the pressing need for genuine climate action rather than relying on unproven technologies. We speak to Ayumi to dive deeper into these issues, and to discuss why Japan's approach of exporting CO₂ to developing countries such as Malaysia might exacerbate the climate crisis, and how it could constitute an unjust practice often referred to as “carbon colonialism.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This series was voted on by the Shoujo Sundae patrons to celebrate the second anniversary of the podcast. To learn more about how to support Shoujo Sundae, visit patreon.com/shoujosundae. In episode one, we enter Yuki's world, our pink-haired deaf protagonist. The poetic, romantic nature of this beautifully animated series is captivating to say the least. We also meet Itsuomi, a boy passionate about language and culture, and Rin, Yuki's extraordinary wingwoman of a friend who's crushing on Itsuomi's cousin, Kyoya. Yuki's and Itsuomi's instant chemistry jumpstarts all three ladies' hearts. Ayu opens up about the shoujo sparkles in her own relationship. In episode two, Itsuomi makes a point to stay in contact with Yuki while traveling, and it goes to show how much he truly likes her. Rin continues to be the wingwoman of the century. Oushi is frustrating in the way he signs so harshly to Yuki, for infantilizing her, and for translating for her without her asking, among other things. In episode three, Yuki makes a sign language guide for Itsuomi! Talk about dedication! Yuki tells Itsuomi that she's comfortable with his touch, melting everyone's hearts. Shin and Emma are introduced, and Yuki asks Itsuomi for clarity on whether or not he's dating Emma. Itsuomi sets strong boundaries with Emma. Ayumi & Uberto are an international couple living in Fukuoka who know a lot about earthquake resistant traditional Japanese buildings. Ayumi wrote an excellent Medium blog about it and another about how Japanese students are educated and trained to survive an earthquake. They have been renovating and living in an old Japanese house KOMINKA after many years living in Europe. Budget: They bought the house for 30 million yen and spent 5 million yen on earthquake resistance seismic retrofit remodeling as well as another 10 million on other renovations. They got 1 million yen back from the government for making use of an AKIYA abandoned house, but couldn't qualify for the subsidy for making the house more earthquake-proof.Earthquake safety of old houses is such a big issue this year due to the horrible Noto Peninsula earthquake which destroyed so many traditional homes. But Ayumi says it's not the design of the traditional buildings which is the problem- it's more termite or rot damage and lack of upkeep.Ayumi's article, "What is an earthquake resistant house?"https://medium.com/@Japanlifeagain/whats-an-earthquake-resistant-house-89a32c7978d7Background Music thanks to Casey Bean- download your own copy and support his original musical journey on Bandcamp: https://caseybean.bandcamp.com/

My guest today is Ayumi Uyeda,, Founder of Proppie With an affinity for discovery Ayumi's path has led her through many cultures and countries, and over time her attraction to solving the unsolvable has become stronger. With deep roots in healthcare and most recently was the Managing Director of Blackmores, she has held General Management and Senior Global positions at Bayer in Japan, South East Asia, and the USA in Consumer Health and Pharmaceuticals, and has successfully started up e-commerce business models. Ayumi got her start as a hospital pharmacist in Brisbane, which formed the foundation of her pursuit of health and her belief that “we are nothing without our health”. She is inspired by problems and is relentless in tackling these in new ways, deriving immense satisfaction from the positive impact that solving such problems can have on people. Her mission now is to address the housing affordability crisis facing millennials in Australia, and she believes that helping this generation to find a path to individual independence will enable them to experience a sense of empowerment, future security, and happiness, unlocking the full potential that this generation has to offer. She believes that unless millennials can see that there is a path for them to realise their Aussie dream of home ownership, the risk of “giving up” on their hopes will set society backward substantially. By drawing direct links between the housing crisis and the health and wellbeing of the millennial generation, she aims to solve one problem (the housing affordability crisis) and mitigate an even greater risk of broad spread mental wellbeing challenges down the track. Ayumi's depth of corporate experience and starting businesses in new markets sets her up strongly to embark on reshaping the property market with her new start-up Proppie, which is a mortgage-sharing matchmaker platform designed to help millennials to make a start into property by buying in teams.
