Your emotions, all of them, the ones you like and the ones you don't, are yours and you are allowed to feel them, all of them, without shame and guilt. That being said, your emotions don't define you. Dr. Shahana Alibhai teaches us how to break down our different emotions, peacefully and lovingly, and accept all of them without judgment, while still knowing the ones we would prefer to have as our base state. Each emotion has a beginning, middle, and end. Sit with your feelings as they come instead of trying to hide them. We so often get mad at ourselves when we feel something negative and rush to mask it with a positive thought, while feeling shame and guilt for emoting in a way we think we shouldn't. It is okay to show yourself love and compassion throughout your entire human experience, no matter what emotion or thought arises. Emotions are your signposts—they're trying to direct your next steps. When you sit in a feeling, lovingly and free of judgment, and acknowledge that you are ready to move out of it, even if you don't know how, you are helping all the parts of your mind know it is ready to move into something different, something better. When you can identify the next best feeling you would like to have you guide your brain from where it was to where you want to be.Mental health is a 24-hour exercise, but taking control of it will transform all your experiences.Seeking professional help is incredibly valuable, however alongside that, there are so many things you can be doing on your own to care for your entire wellbeing. You are the captain of your own ship and there are many tools and tricks you can use to help steer that ship in the direction you want to go in.LINKS FROM THIS EPISODEFollow Dr. Shahana on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/thedrshahana/ Check out her Linkedin profile - https://www.linkedin.com/in/shahana-alibhai-319068a4/ Dr. Shahana's Website - https://drshahana.com/
“Self awareness is the key” says Dr. Alibhai, Family Doctor, public speaker and “Community Healer.” Dr. Alibhai opened our Mental Health Awareness Summit this year with a keynote. Listen here to this episode where we recorded it just for you. Dr. Alibhai's parents escaped Uganda as refugees and started their new life in Canada. She took classes at night at the young age of 16 and became a certified fitness instructor. She practices as a Family Doctor and is a motivating and inspiring public speaker, famous for her TedX Talk, "Emotional Literacy for Better Mental Health." She is known as a "Community Healer." But, like each of us...she has a story. After completing her residency in Family Medicine and birthing her first son, the stressors of life caught up with her as much as she knew a lot about maintaining a healthy lifestyle. She found herself at rock bottom suffering with postpartum anxiety and feeling alone. "The first step is to learn to be self-aware." - Dr. Alibhai Even though Dr. Alibhai studied nutrition, exercise and medicine for ten years, she finally found the missing link - HEALTHY THINKING. Dr. Alibhai currently works in the largest health youth clinic in British Columbia. She works with young adults ages 12-24. 1 in 5 Canadians suffer from a mental health illness. Dr. Dan interviews Dr. Shahana Alibhai about her TEDxTalk “Emotional Literacy for Better Mental Health” and her work as a family physician and mental health expert. As a mother of three young boys (under the age of 6!), a mental health advocate, and a family physician, Dr. Shahana has a message for all of us – the foundation of all of our health starts in our mind. After Dr. Shahana became a patient struggling with postpartum anxiety and depression, she realized what the missing link was – the mind. Family Doctor, and TedX Talk presenter on, "Emotional Literacy for Better Mental Health," Dr. Alibhai is known as a "Community Healer." Dr. Alibhai's parents escaped Uganda as refugees and started their new life in Canada. She took classes at night at the young age of 16 and became a certified fitness instructor. But, like each of us...she has a story. After completing her residency in Family Medicine and birthing her first son, the stressors of life caught up with her as much as she knew a lot about maintaining a healthy lifestyle. She found herself at rock bottom suffering with postpartum anxiety and feeling alone. In her Ted Talk she mentions that we know all to well how to run ourselves down by saying we should be doing something we are not. And we listen to that internal dialogue running in our mind. The all too familiar negative self talk and just feel frustrated and guilty. Dr. Alibhai leaves us with the phrase she heard from the Toms shoe owner, Blake Mycoskie, "I AM ENOUGH." This week stop and reflect on these three simple words. When I started to say to myself, "I am enough." My thoughts about myself began to change. Wow! What a powerful statement! How many times do we think, "I need to work out more." "I need to eat more healthy." "I need to stop..." "I need to do more of..." "I need more..." Catch yourself this week, and say to yourself, "You know what? I am enough." https://drshahana.com/ As mentioned in the podcast, we are holding a free upcoming webinar.
