Episode 255: Developing Healthy Thinking Patterns for Emotional Resilience - Part 2Marcus Aurelius said, “You have power over your mind, not outside events. Realize this and you will find strength.” Today's episode is #2 in a 5-part series of creating emotional resilience.Today's episode is titled: "Empowering Your Mind: Developing Healthy Thinking Patterns for Emotional Resilience”A couple years ago I joined an emotional resilience group a few years back. The class focused on learning and practicing spiritual and practical skills to better care for the body, mind, emotions and relationships. Pretty important stuff. I want to share some of my take-aways and I'll bring some experts in to comment as well.As I mentioned, this is the second in a 5-part series on emotional resilience. I hope these episodes will support you in your own quest for choosing emotional resilience skills - because these are skills we all need . Stay tuned for this important step in emotional resilience - developing healthy thinking patterns. I want you to find one ah-ha today that will serve you.My first marriage was in 1995, my second was 2007 and my third was in 2011. All three ended in divorce. When I finally came to love and accept my own personal story and the disappointment I felt, the failure I felt, the embarrassment I felt, the progress was all about learning to reframe the negative aspects of my story that I was focusing on. IT WAS ALL ABOUT INTERPRETATION AND MINDSET. It wasn't until I learned how to step out of victim mode and focus on what I had gained from my experiences, like understanding what it felt like to feel unloved, to be cheated on, to be abandoned, to be emotionally abused; I gained empathy for women in abusive situations, I gained empathy for being a single mom, for lonely people, for times of brokenness, for needing forgiveness; for the struggle to forgive. I gained strength as I survived, and kept trying. Instead of my perceived stack of failures - the overall crap in the relationships and the ultimate dissolution of the marriages, I could find peace in my own messy journey by focusing on the things I'd learned and understood now that I did not before. It IS ALL ABOUT WHERE WE PUT THE FOCUS - IN OTHER WORDS - MINDSET. My point is, our thoughts are everything. They create our reality. They make all the difference in how we see ourselves and how we interpret our world. How we talk about ourselves and how we think about things impacts how we feel because thoughts influence emotions. I've brought Kathryn Reynolds back for this episode. She is a licensed marriage and family therapist. We met her in Part 1. She practices solution-focused therapy and is passionate about helping women with anxiety or depression regain their sense of identity, expression, and purpose. Here is a clip of our conversation on Healthy Thinking Patterns:Tune into the podcast to listen to Dr. Reynolds. In Proverbs 23:7 it says, “For as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he…”I know that none of these ideas are new - but they are vitally important to understand and to work on. I'd like each of you listening to take stock of your own thoughts about your own life right now. What stories are you creating? Are they negative? Are they positive? The ones that are negative - how can you hop over the fence and reframe them?Let's peak into an example:I was speaking to a friend the other day and she shared a story with me that I thought really captured the clear concept of how the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves really define us. So it's important to look at what we are thinking.Hear Jackie on the podcast...As we discuss healthy thinking patterns we need to first accept this important piece of the puzzle, that knowing how much power our thoughts have over our emotions and how much power our...

How are you doing with your New Year's Resolutions? Are you getting wear you want to be, or are you getting stuck and need some help? Resistance is a natural part of getting stuck and getting unstuck. On one hand, we get stuck because we create emotional resistance to things that are new, scary, or just plain out of our comfort zone. On the other hand, like a bike chain that connects the front gears to the back gears on a bike, we have to have positive resistance in order to move ourselves forward. You don't get very far when the chain slips off the sprokets because you lose your energy and forward momentum. But what if you could shift your mindset AND get out of your own way? WHAT IF you could make one simple change to get yourself back on track and reach the goals you set for yourself? "You may not know what lies in the future when you opt for change, but trust your instincts when they tell you that you cannot stay where you are." So you know something needs to shift or change in order for you to be happier, healthier, and live the life you dream of living but you don't know how to get there. Authentic Living (Mentality) Part 3 Circle 3 - Mentality (Think) These are the beliefs and stories that we tell ourselves. This is Where we are going. Process driven. Potential Pitfall- Intellectualizing. Quotes on thinking: Rene Descartes, the French philosopher, stated in 1637 - Cogito, ergo sum - “I think therefore I am”. Probably the most significant quote to push a civilization to the unhealthy extreme of reason being the most important capacity. “If everyone is thinking alike then no one is thinking.” Benjamin Franklin "There is no conversation so boring as the one where everyone agrees." "When we like other people agreeing with us we will often not say what we are thinking." "An opinion should be a result of thought not a substitute for it." "It is the mark of an educated man to entertain thoughts without accepting them." Healthy Thinking - (Romans 12:3-8) May 29, 2022 by King of Grace Church
How do we get healthy? Mindset aspect of health Attitude towards [seeming] problems Nisah means to elevate There is a cause and effect to everything Relationship with food It's not by bread alone that man lives- don't become subservient to the food. Mindset #1: You're the master. eating for a purpose Tools to help notice if hungry or feeling stressed When you're feeling down, you eat which means you're begging the food to give you life - It's unhealthy to eat when you're needy Food cannot give you life, it can maintain the life you have You cannot sit by the table with a sour face - Rabbi Friedman's mother why do we eat in the first place? Mindset #2: I am Healthy Healthy Mindsets are most important than health [25 min] The question is not about how healthy is the food, rather it's how healthy are you? Food can be Healthful, but food itself is not healthy Be a healthy person - one attracted to food most healthful Eat for a Heavenly purpose - you are Heaven compared to the food. You are what you eat. What you eat becomes what you are. The objective is for the food to become you, not the other way Spiritual side of Anorexia Eat until you're not hungry, not until you have no appetite. The hunger has to be satisfied, not the capacity Mindset 3: Approach it with enthusiasm Eat less and don't be picky Healthy attachments Mindset 4: Flexibility What's my purpose? If there's one thing that stands in the way of people making changes in their lives, it's their thoughts. Our thoughts can be powerful barriers to change, but they can also be helpful tools for growth. In this episode, we'll explore how to overcome the #1 barrier: our thoughts. We'll look at some healthy thinking patterns that can help us make positive changes in our lives, and we'll learn how to use these patterns to our advantage. In this episode of Trail Angels powered by Cairn the Load, Mark and Annette will be discussing Healthy Thinking Patterns. We share some powerful tools that will be helpful to understand our true identity, our worth, and how worth is different than "worthiness." We discuss common inaccurate thinking patterns and "triggers," what they are and how we respond to them, and ultimately healthy thinking patterns and how we can change our thoughts to a healthier way of thinking. Grab a paper and pencil, and be prepared to join us as we learn how to create Healthy Thinking Patterns. Common Inaccurate Thinking PatternsAll or Nothing, Mislabeling, Jumping to Conclusions, Personalizing, Emotional Reasoning, Overgeneralization, Negative Mental Filter, Discounting the Positive, Magnification, "Should" Statements. At the core of every thought, you have a belief. Your beliefs determine your thoughts, feelings, actions, and behaviors. In other words, your beliefs are what shape your entire experience of reality. If you don't believe something is possible, you'll never be able to make it happen. If your beliefs limit your progress towards your goals, your life will always be stuck in a rut, and you'll never achieve your full potential. What makes your life better: your time, energy, or thoughts? It takes as much mental effort as positive thoughts as negative ones. If we want to change our lives for the better, we need to stop accepting our limiting beliefs just because they're comfortable. Sometimes your thoughts can help your efforts, but other times your thoughts will do nothing but reinforce your current situation. If you want to move forward in your life, you have to start thinking differently. You need to take control of your mind and take responsibility for your mental patterns.

Family Doctor, and TedX Talk presenter on, "Emotional Literacy for Better Mental Health," Dr. Alibhai is known as a "Community Healer." Dr. Alibhai's parents escaped Uganda as refugees and started their new life in Canada. She took classes at night at the young age of 16 and became a certified fitness instructor. She found herself at rock bottom suffering with postpartum anxiety and feeling alone. In her Ted Talk she mentions that we know all to well how to run ourselves down by saying we should be doing something we are not. And we listen to that internal dialogue running in our mind. The all too familiar negative self talk and just feel frustrated and guilty. Dr. Alibhai leaves us with the phrase she heard from the Toms shoe owner, Blake Mycoskie, "I AM ENOUGH." This week stop and reflect on these three simple words. When I started to say to myself, "I am enough." My thoughts about myself began to change. Wow! What a powerful statement! How many times do we think, "I need to work out more." "I need to eat more healthy." "I need to stop..." "I need to do more of..." "I need more..." Catch yourself this week, and say to yourself, "You know what? I am enough." https://drshahana.com/ As mentioned in the podcast, we are holding a free upcoming webinar. Tune in to this episode to see how our thoughts impact our physical, emotional, and mental health. This episode discusses how thoughts impact your well-being as well as how to harness the power of thoughts to create the life you want. The way we explain events that happen in life effects not only how we feel but our actions. Will you continue to persevere when challenges occur? Do you say things to yourself that increase or decrease the likelihood of positive events occurring again? Do your thoughts create a sense of hopelessness and promote depression? It is imperative that we are awake and aware of our thoughts. Often times our thoughts are running as automatic scripts like background music without us paying any attention. Since we have many thousands of thoughts a day we need to take charge of where that mind power is going. Effectively altering our thoughts impacts mood, academic performance, athletic performance, job performance, relationships, physical health and so much more. The world seems to be spinning out of control. Social distancing, holidays without family, and an uncertain political climate make it seem like our psychological moorings are unraveling. In today's episode of True You!, I speak with Dr. Mike Griffin about the challenges of COVID-19 and political stress on our emotional health. Fear, unpredictability, and perceptions of lost social relationships appear to be the culprits. Fear When COVID-19 crossed continents reaching pandemic proportions in April 2020, our curiosity quickly turned to fear and anxiety. Since the function of fear is to prepare the body for potential threats, it is no surprise that rates of fear and anxiety increased by 20% in some parts of the world over the summer. Fear and anxiety can sometimes be a good thing, but when they become persistent and overwhelming, it often leads to chronic psychiatric disorders including post-traumatic stress, phobias, chronic anxiety, and depression. Unpredictability A perceived lack of predictability is associated with increases in fear and anxiety. Earlier this year and almost all of a sudden, everything seemed to become unpredictable. To compensate, we tried educating ourselves on how to identify, avoid, and treat symptoms of COVID-19, only to discover many conflicting opinions from people we have been taught to trust. Compounded by the uncertainty of the 2020 presidential election, our sense of uncertainty, fear, and anxiety became a significant and overwhelming part of our lives. Loneliness Researchers have identified a common fear response called tend-and-befriend. In times of national or personal crisis, social support has proven very important. For example, following Hurricane Katrina, social support played a crucial role in mental health recovery as well as building resilience to the crisis. Interestingly, the research to date has not shown any significant increases in loneliness. Social media has enabled new and powerful ways of maintaining essential social connections, especially now in a world gripped with a pandemic. With advances in social media, coupled with video chat apps like Facetime, Zoom, and Skype we have been able to adapt to new ways of maintaining social connection. Remaining at risk for decreased social support are those who do not have access to such technology, including the elderly and the financially disadvantaged. Putting the Pieces Together When our thinking is clear and rational we hold power over our emotions Cognitive science tells us that our perceptions contribute to neurochemical reactions in the body that we experience as emotions. It is critical that the information we use to understand COVID-19 or political stressors be as clear, understandable, and rational as possible so that we can predict the steps needed to keep ourselves safe. We should avoid sources of information that do not offer evidence-based and trusted information. With healthy thinking, you'll have healthy emotions. In these times of uncertainty, unpredictability, and unprecedented societal flux, we must use our available resources to support ourselves and each other. We must be sure to maintain social connections, consume information with a discerning, rational mind, and seek counseling if needed. Mental health counselors are trained to identify problematic thinking and will help you think differently about the world around you.
