Have you ever TAKEN THE PLUNGE?? Cold water immersion is one of hottest trends in the health and wellness world.  A number of theories exist re: the benefits of cold water immersion. Generally we think of recovery from exercise, muscle soreness, injuries, etc. But the recent “craze” has been due to the potential to improve depression and anxiety, boost immunity, and perhaps even extend our longevity. But does it work? Is there data to support it?? LET'S ASK AN EXPERT! Our expert today is Mike Tipton, PhD, FTPS! Dr. Tipton is a Professor of Human & Applied Physiology, Extreme Environments Laboratory, School of Sport Health & Exercise Science, University of Portsmouth, UK. He has published over 750 scientific papers, reports, chapters, abstracts and books in his research areas of drowning, thermoregulation, environmental and occupational physiology, and survival in the sea.  He has been a consultant in survival and thermal medicine to the Royal Air Force, UKSport and the English Institute of Sport (EIS).  Prof Tipton is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine and The Physiological Society.  He was awarded his MBE for services to physiological research in extreme environments; the Ireland Medal for saving lives from drowning worldwide; and the H&L Swiftwater rescue lifetime achievement award from the USA. LET'S DIVE IN, SHALL WE?? Key highlights in this episode include: What's the basic physiology behind cold water immersion? What happens to our bodies when we make ourselves cold? Does it differ in full submersion vs a shower? Does it change if we put our faces in the cold water as opposed to just our bodies? What temperature is most appropriate for a cold plunge? How long should we stay submerged? What are the potential short and long term benefits? What does the research suggest? What are the risks/potential downsides? Who should NOT be doing this? What about cryochambers? Do they work? Who is Wim Hof? Should we do as the Iceman does?? Dr. Tipton recommends the following resources to learn about cold water immersion: The University of Portsmouth webpage- including Dr. Tipton's profile. 2022 British Medical Journal article "Cold Water Therapies: Minimising Risks". Olly Bridge is a Health and Wellbeing expert who originally trained at the English Institute of Sport (EIS) and proceeded to work with elite athletes like Jenson Button and Mark Webber at Benetton/Renault Formula One and the British Olympic Gymnastics Team.  Having served as an Executive Director of the Workplace Health Association of Australia (WHAA), Head of Health and Wellbeing at Australia's largest health insurer and COO of Advanced Health Intelligence, Olly also runs his own consultancy practice called “Build a Bridge” and uses his eclectic 25 years of experience to coach ‘Corporate Athletes', and their teams, to perform at their peak.  Ollie's career journey really has been one of self discovery and continuous growth. He has worked in elite sport, for big corporates and for small start ups and he talks openly about the benefits and challenges of each and how he arrived at decisions to move from one type of environment to another and sometimes back again. I love the authenticity of Olly's story. He shines a light on the more challenging reality of a successful career in a way that illustrates very clearly what an iterative process life can be, especially if you pay attention to your gut and are prepared to make changes when you've outgrown your current role. He realised that the world of elite sport, that he'd worked so hard to become a part of was not going to work long term for him and so he made a move. After landing a great position with BMW, getting his own flat and a company car in his early 20s he realised he was living the life of a 45 year old when he felt he should be having more fun. An international opportunity sounded like the perfect way to inject fun but was a test of his relationship.  With his passion for sport, health and fitness bubbling away under the surface, it was only a matter of time before he had to get back into that world. Olly's purpose is to impact health at scale which you'll hear derives from an impulse to help others that showed up as early as his junior school days. I'm delighted to have this opportunity to introduce him to you and look forward to hearing what resonates with you.  You can contact Olly via: LinkedIn: Olly Bridge Email: bridgeolly@gmail.com Website: Build A Bridge  If you enjoy listening to my guests career stories, please follow CAREER-VIEW MIRROR in your podcast app.  Instagram @careerviewmirror  Email: cvm@aquilae.co.uk  Episode recorded on  24 January, 2023

Dan recently formed Collaborate Sports during the initial lockdowns through COVID as a means of connecting developing coaches and practitioners through a personal development focus. Since then, he has reached over 400 hundred practitioners from varying countries using the personal development platform he has created. He provides opportunities to others through Bespoke Coaching/Mentoring, Monthly Interactive Webinars with guest presenters, and the Interactive Personal Development (IPD) Programme. The IPD was the main focus of building a platform to network other coaches together in a learning environment and make mentorship more affordable for younger and developing coaches. The IPD allows 10-12 coaches to partake in a 6-month course, focusing on specific content dependent on the Technical or Non Technical nature of the programmes. Live attendance means interaction is central to the programme where attendees can take the information shared and navigate how to apply it to their own world through the help of Dan and others in the programme. The costs are more affordable due to the group nature of the programme, and the online platform provided to allow coaches to communicate between monthly meet ups means that attendees get to coach and help each other daily as required. Currently, the S&C Technical IPD is open for enrollment with spaces still available for the commencement on January 31st 2021. The programmes reach coaches on all time zones based on running 2 cohorts at any one time. Or put another way, all of those roles are part-biomechanists.” Shin, who joined the EIS in her newly-created role in 2018, also delves into: - Her department’s efforts to deliver biomechanics support to those EIS sports where it is not embedded [4:00]; - Understanding the individual athlete and challenging long-held beliefs in the pursuit of optimal performance [12:00]; - The impact of language on your effectiveness as a biomechanist and the importance of pilot testing [21:00]; - How those receptive sports are adapting their philosophies to include evidence-based technical models [24:00]. Joining us this week on the Supporting Champions podcast is Head of Physiology at the English Institute of Sport (EIS), Dr. Emma Ross. I first met Emma at a scientific conference in 2009 and she blew me away with her ability to communicate and translate complex ideas and concepts. A few years later I appointed Emma as Head of Physiology at the EIS and after moving on from the system in 2016, I have kept a close eye on how people and schemes of work progress, develop and grow. This is exactly what Emma has done, particularly in her work on an essential project around the female athlete. In this conversation you will hear about several concepts around the female athlete and obvious discussions around things such as the menstrual cycles, taboo, equality, ethics and positive/negative behaviours that can enrich or erode cultures in different directions. Inevitably we discussed some potential implications and applications of support both inside and outside of sport. Show notes Steve and Emma begin by exploring Emma's background growing up, her journey in sport as a keen rugby player and endurance runner and the role she currently holds at the EIS. After becoming a mother and embarking on the female athlete project at the EIS, Emma has spent a lot of time reflecting on the support she received from her parents growing up and the influence that has had on her work in academia and sport. Get out and speak out loud – one of Emma's top pieces of advices for any aspiring sport scientist. Growing up, Emma spent a lot of time in debating groups and acknowledges this accelerating the skills required to lead and influence people. Steve and Emma begin to explore Emma's PhD research on monitoring the mechanisms of fatigue during physical activity via transcranial magnetic stimulation techniques. After transitioning from PhD studies and academia into her role at the EIS as Head of Physiologist, Emma discusses some of the challenges and lessons learnt from this period. Steve asks Emma to share some of the origins, background, data and insights on the female athlete campaign and how this is now optimising the support of the female athlete within the system. Emma discusses some of the behaviours that can enrich or erode the ability to optimise female athlete support, particularly around the importance of role models, removing taboo and ridding cultures of silence, secrecy and judgment. Emma extends on the importance of female role models and diversifying the workforce in sport and beyond in order to optimise and innovate. He is a Nutrition Consultant specialising in nutrition for high performance, physique athletes and people wanting to feel more confident about their bodies. His appreciation for proper nutrition began from an early age when he was a national-level kickboxer (and desired to be as lean as Bruce Lee!). As such, a career in nutrition was the obvious career path. He has been helping people achieve their goals for almost a decade now, having built a solid foundation with his undergraduate degree in Sport & Exercise Sciences and masters degree (distinction) in Sports Nutrition both attained at the University of Chester. As a former Performance Nutritionist for the English Institute of Sport (EIS) and British Athletics, he provided world-leading nutritional support to Britain's best track and field athletes, leading to many medal wins in international competitions. More recently, he was appointed as Assistant Professor in Sport & Exercise Medicine at the University of Nottingham, where he leads the MSc Sports and Exercise Nutrition module. In the episode, we discussed:  - Estimating caloric requirements for muscle gain and what surplus is optimal. - Setting macronutrient intakes: Hormonal effects and Joseph's thoughts on intermittent fasting and keto dieting.   - And finally, an up-to-date overview of protein research more specifically looking at amino acid supplementation and co-ingestion with other nutrients.
