How can positive psychology help curb burnout? We're a bunch of overachievers here in the Bossed Up community, and burnout is a pretty common thread between us. Burnout is painful, frustrating, and—as my guest on this episode explains—more avoidable than we might think if we're willing to work on “working happier.”Stella Grizont was named the world's leading happiness expert by TIME Magazine. She uses her master's in Applied Positive Psychology to help leaders find career fulfillment and organizations engage their employees more deeply. We discuss her recent book and how her approach can help you help yourself, leading to more enjoyment in work and in life.Embrace Stella's thoughtful approach to positive psychology by uncovering:The impact of negativity bias and a play mindset when navigating uncertainty; How to practice self-compassion when waffling between anxiety and excitement;Learned optimism and the three Ps that can help you cultivate a brighter outlook; Why we should focus on “What do I want to be?” before “What do I want to do?”Related Links:The Work Happiness Method: Master the 8 Skills of Career Fulfillment - https://www.stellagrizont.com/work-happiness-method-bookDownload the Vision Generator - https://stellagrizont.mykajabi.com/visiongeneratorSign up for Stella's newsletter on her website - https://www.stellagrizont.com/Connect with Stella on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/stella-grizont-a4b7792/Connect with Stella on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/stellagrizont/Oprah speaks to finding your vision - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XfrOcfc8zNsLEVEL UP: a Leadership Accelerator for Women on the Rise - https://www.bossedup.org/levelupBossed Up Courage Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/927776673968737/Bossed Up LinkedIn Group - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/7071888/
Do you ever look around and think: how does everyone else seem so happy? If this thought hits you now more than usual, you're not alone. Did you know that - on average - upwards of 30% of adults in the US report to the American Psychiatric Association that their stress levels significantly increase during the holidays? And 55% of us report experiencing loneliness throughout the season.Stella Grizont, named a leading happiness expert by Time Magazine, is a speaker and executive coach who helps leaders achieve career fulfillment and organizations enhance employee well-being. Some of Stella's corporate clients include Google, Johnson & Johnson, VMWare, and Genentech. Her unique approach to being happier and more engaged on the job has been featured on MSNBC, The Today Show, and Vanity Fair.Growing up, Stella often felt out of place. With immigrant parents from Ukraine, it was hard for her to relate to typical American childhood experiences, leading her to immerse herself in schoolwork in a bid for independence and self-reliance. As the first in her family to attend college, Stella pursued what she believed to be her path: climbing the corporate ladder. However, she soon found herself feeling stuck. It took a recession, being laid off, and ending an engagement for Stella to hit rock bottom—but in that challenging time (when many would give up) she managed to find her light and start anew… and it inspired her to help the rest of us do the same.Tune in as she discusses how to rediscover joy in your work, overcome burnout, and use life's toughest moments as stepping stones to a more fulfilling career and a more meaningful life overall. ************Show Notes:(Full episode release November 18, 2024) A big thank you to Stella Grizont for joining the podcast and sharing your inspiring story. When you think of abundance, do you think of having more—more money, more success, more stuff? What if true abundance isn't just about accumulation, but about appreciation? In this episode, Nicole Kalil is joined by Cathy Heller—transformational coach, spiritual guide, meditation teacher, and host of the Abundant Ever After podcast—to challenge everything we think we know about living a full and prosperous life. Cathy's new book, Abundant Ever After: Tools for Creating a Life of Prosperity and Ease, invites us to shift our mindset, tap into the flow of prosperity, and welcome abundance into every aspect of our lives. Together, Cathy and Nicole explore how abundance is something we tune into, not something we chase, and how trusting in your inherent enoughness can unlock joy and ease in ways you never imagined. So let's TUNE IN. Tune in to the limitless possibilities, to receive what's there for you, tune in to the trust that lies within. Trust that you are already enough and create a life that feels full—not just because of what's in it, but because of who you are in it. We've become obsessed with productivity, confusing it with busyness and setting unrealistic expectations to perform 24/7—leaving us feeling guilty when we're not “doing enough.” That's exactly why I'm excited to dive into the topic of toxic productivity with today's guest, Israa Nasir. Israa, a New York City-based psychotherapist, writer, and founder of WellGuide, brings deep expertise in mental health, identity formation, and healing, particularly for AAPI first- and second-generation immigrants. She has spoken at prestigious organizations like Google, Meta, and Yale University and serves on the Mental Health Advisory Board for PopSugar and August. Her new book, Toxic Productivity: Reclaim Your Time and Emotional Energy in a World That Always Demands More, offers strategies to break free from the hustle culture and reclaim what truly matters. Because at the end of the day, it won't be the hustle, emails, or to-do lists that define your life—it'll be the joy you shared, the impact you made, and the legacy you leave behind. So let's stop glorifying busyness and start embracing a life worth celebrating. Is success about how much you make? Is it about being influential? Is it about having it all? How do we, how do YOU, define success? Here to help us answer that question is Stella Grizont, the Author of The Work Happiness Method, an Executive Coach, one of the first 150 people in the world to earn a Master's in Applied Positive Psychology (aka the science of happiness) from the University of Pennsylvania, and a leading happiness expert according to Time Magazine. Leveraging research from positive psychology, neuroscience, and leadership, Stella helps people identify their vision of success and make strides towards achieving it -- in their career and in life. Success needs to first be defined in order to be achieved. And then acknowledged and celebrated in order to be experienced. Otherwise we're just chasing an elusive moving target, and I can tell you from experience that that is fucking exhausting. Create YOUR success – define it, achieve it, celebrate it. Having the perfect job might not always be the key to happiness. Stella Grizont, Executive Coach, Trainer and Founder of Woopaah, joins us this week to share her history with workplace burnout. Stella shares her expertise on the importance of individual and workplace values, and how mental health practices at work can have significant long-term benefits. Stella also talks about our brain’s negativity bias and the importance of tending to our happiness at work, as well as when planning a family.
My guest today is Stella Grizont. Stella is an executive coach and has helped over 1400 overachievers work happier and live better across 21 countries. She's a favorite for organizations like Google, Genentech, and J&J. She's on a mission to empower people to take control and end the dread they experience on the job and feel like their most alive self. You may have seen Stella featured on Forbes, MSNBC, ABC, and The Today Show. Stella notes that when we're unhappy at work, our brain typically wants to avoid it, to get away, to get out of the unpleasant situation, but escaping the bad is not the same thing as moving towards the good. In order to figure out what we should be moving towards, we first need to figure out how we want to feel, how we want to be, what we want to experience at work. Once we get clear on that, we can realize that there are a number of ways for us to accomplish this, and new possibilities open up. When Stella first begins working with a client who is considering a major change at work, she has them do an activity that helps them get clear on their vision, what it is they truly want to be moving towards, and you can get this for free at her website (www.VisionGenerator.com). After helping her clients determine their vision, she helps them figure out their underlying values, and then the process continues from there. Stella and I discuss the intersection of her work and one of my own specialties, life purpose, and she has some great insights into how we can reframe our own actions in order to feel better about ourselves and less self-critical. She also addresses what we can do when we're faced with very difficult coworkers. To learn more about Stella, check out her websites (www.VisionGenerator.com and www.woopaah.com), and follow her on Twitter and Instagram (@StellaGrizont), and on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/stella.grizont or https://www.facebook.com/woopaah). Stella is all about creating the life you love, and listening through the journey to find your “dream job” on the other side of your “dream job.” In This Episode Woopaah Losing Yourself to the Corporate World The “Dream job” Applied Positive Psychology Who Do YOU Want to Be? Following Your Gut, Not Fear Quotes in This Episode “That was the first time I realized, ‘Oh my God, your mind and body are so connected.’ I have lost who I am in this organization...So, our body is always sending us signals.” —Stella Grizont “I realized that the essence of what I love to do was to listen to people and help them live their dream life.” —Stella Grizont “So, it's funny because for thousands of years philosophers, mystics, teachers, poets, religious leaders have all wrestled with what does it mean to live the life worth living, and it's only in about the last 20 or so years that scientists have started asking that question.” —Stella Grizont “There's tons of toxic work environments. We know that nearly 80% of people worldwide are unengaged in their work–7 out of 10 in the US. So, people are checking out.” —Stella Grizont “The way I help my clients–and this is the first thing I do with my clients–is I help them establish a vision of not what it is that they want to achieve or do or accomplish in five years, it's about how do I want to be, because you can achieve a bunch of goals and still be miserable.” —Stella Grizont “Traditional psychology, as we know, it is a deficit model. So, it asks what's wrong with people and how do we get them from negative five to zero–how do we get them back to normal? Positive psychology uses the same empirical approach–so evidence-based approach–but it asks a different set of questions. It asks, ‘How do we get people from zero to plus five?’” —Stella Grizont Resources Stella’s LinkedIn, Facebook, and Blog The Woopaah Website
