Ever feel like your brain just gives up on you halfway through the day? You're doing all the right things—grinding, pushing, sipping your fourth cup of coffee—and still, your focus slips and your energy crashes. It's not because you're lazy or lacking discipline. It's because your brain is burnt out. And guess what? There's science to back that up—and a solution that's way cooler than you'd think. In this episode of The Happy Hustle Podcast, I got to sit down with Dr. Ramses Alcaide, a neuroscientist and the CEO of Neurable. Now, if you haven't heard of Neurable yet, you're about to have your mind blown—because they're not just making headphones, they're creating the future of brain optimization. We're talking real-time brainwave tracking, AI-powered productivity support, and tech that literally helps you prevent burnout before it even begins.Dr. Ramses shared some gold nuggets in our convo. One of the biggest takeaways? Breaks aren't just something nice to take—they're absolutely essential. But here's the kicker: not all breaks are created equal. Most of us think taking a break means scrolling through our phones or watching a random YouTube video. But according to neuroscience, those kinds of breaks don't help your brain recover. What you need are effective breaks—strategic rest that restores focus and reboots your mind for high performance. That's where Neurable comes in. These aren't just headphones—they're like a personal coach for your brain. They monitor your neural signals and tell you when you're locked in and when your focus is slipping. When it's time to take a break, you'll know. When it's time to power through, you'll be in flow. It's like turning your brain into your biggest productivity ally. For an entrepreneur trying to juggle it all, that's a massive win.We also dive into the power of experimentation. Dr. Ramses emphasized how no two brains are the same. What works for your buddy might not work for you. Some people recharge by moving their body, some through meditation, and others through quick mental resets. Neurable gives you insights to figure out what your brain needs, not just what productivity books tell you. Then we got into some seriously next-level stuff—like how this kind of brain-tech isn't just about optimizing your daily hustle. It's also paving the way for early detection and prevention of neurodegenerative diseases. Imagine having the ability to identify brain health issues years before symptoms show up. That's the kind of proactive health support that could change lives. And if you're thinking this tech is just for hardcore biohackers or neuroscientists, think again. Even if all you do is take calls and listen to music, these headphones are still worth it. The bonus is that you're supporting your brain while you're at it. I've been using them myself, and I gotta say—they're a game-changer.So whether you're running a startup or building your empire, this episode is a must-listen. Dr. Ramses breaks down the science in a way that's extremely accessible, and the conversation is filled with real, actionable advice you can start using today.Want to hear how to stop burning out, start optimizing, and think your way to better performance? If you're ready to give your brain a boost, check out Neurable.com and use code HAPPY to save over a hundred bucks on a pair of headphones. Cindy Esliger addresses the self-care craze that has become less about caring for ourselves and more of a quick-fix industry. She explores setting healthy boundaries to reclaim our power and encourage us to manage life's stresses. Self-care is important but it means more than a scented candle or something we can buy. Part of self-care is doing internal work to determine what we want and need, and what limits we have to set. The rage and frustration we can feel while pushing back against an oppressive or toxic work culture while balancing too many stressors is what leads to burnout. An externally applied fix, something we buy or a ritual we perform, may make us feel slightly better in the short term but does nothing to protect us from future harm or continued stressors. Cindy's definition of self-care is a process, not a product. It involves setting limits and prioritizing personal well-being over productivity. As Cindy points out, true self-care is not always comfortable. It can be challenging and messy as we work through emotional upheaval to change our life situations in order to thrive. She offers insight from her own experiences with change, boundaries, and reclaiming our power as a survival skill. What she shares explores how boundaries safeguard mental and emotional health and lead to long-term shifts that bolster self-care and create sustainable relationships in the future. Boundaries aren't as easy as a bubble bath but they're much longer lasting in their effects.Resources discussed in this episode:Guide to Reclaiming Your PowerAstronomic AudioConfidence Collective—Contact Cindy Esliger Career Confidence Coaching: website | instagram | facebook | linkedin | email

Burn-Out, says author Katherine May, is what happens when you repeatedly ignore your own needs. Sound familiar? The first signs are often that you can't focus. Can't read, maybe. Can't sleep, or sleep too much? Can't eat, or can't stop eating? You're Tired All The Time. You have that cold that just won't leave. The cure, everyone says, is simple: Slow down, Darl. But it's not so easy when everyone needs something from you. Author and advocate Katherine May -  creator of the Sunday Times and New York Times bestselling books Wintering and Enchantment - thinks that the way we're taught to deal with burn-out is unrealistic for most women, particularly midlife women with overflowing plates. Waking up to meditate is not so easy when you've got lunches to make, work to do, life to live. And let's face it, a world that prioritises productivity hacks isn't exactly championing meaningful rest. So how do you replenish, in 2024, when absolutely everyone's lost their charger? In this episode, I had the privilege of chatting with Britt Frank, the author of 'The Science of Stuck', where we delved into the intricacies of navigating stress, anxiety, and trauma. It's crucial as leaders to understand exactly how and why members on our teams feel stuck, which most often relates back to trauma in some way, shape or form.  Britt shares the profound circumstances that prompted her to write her book, and the ways in which we as people leaders can understand anxiety better. Getting into the nitty gritty and understanding the root cause is a powerful key in unlocking the potential of those around us.  Britt sheds light on the significance of comprehending trauma, emotional regulation, and neuroscience for enhancing both leadership abilities and personal well-being. We explored various aspects of mental health, including anxiety, stress management, self-leadership, and the intriguing concept of 'micro yeses'. Drawing parallels with car analogies, we discussed the gas pedal (sympathetic nervous system), brake pedal (parasympathetic system), and emergency brake (overactive fight-flight response) as tools for understanding and regulating our nervous system. Britt's insights into developing shadow intelligence alongside emotional intelligence and intelligence quotient offer valuable strategies for managing unresolved trauma or what she aptly terms 'brain indigestion'. Dive into this episode to gain profound knowledge on enhancing leadership and personal well-being through the lens of neuroscience and emotional regulation. Britt Frank, LSCSW, SEP is a licensed neuropsychotherapist and author of The Science of Stuck (Penguin Random House), named by SHRM, Esquire, New York Magazine, and The Next Big Idea Club as a must-read.  Britt received her undergraduate degree from Duke University and her master's degree from the University of Kansas, where she later became an award-winning adjunct instructor. Britt is a contributing writer to Psychology Today and her work has been featured in Forbes, NPR, Fast Company, Psych Central, SELF, and Thrive Global. When feelings of stress or overwhelm come up in your business, how do you respond? Most business owners... A. Freeze - their todo list feels so overwhelming they don't feel capable of starting at all. They procrastinate instead, doing everything except the tasks they're supposed to be doing. B. Avoid or ignore the emotion - they march on with their many projects and tasks, pushing through the stress and overwhelm to do the work. Which reaction do you have? Without a little self-awareness, I fell under category A. I've had times when I've felt so overwhelmed that I just checked out and sat in front of the TV all day, went walking for hours in the woods, or messed around on my phone all afternoon. But this didn't get me anywhere. In fact, each time I reacted this way to feeling overwhelmed, I was training my brain to make my freeze response a pattern. Then I realised there is a healthier way to deal with feelings of overwhelm and stress when they come up. A simple way to both manage the feeling, release it, AND get back into the swing of work. In fact, this one simple strategy has helped me go from feeling stressed and frozen to having 7 podcast ideas, recording them all in one afternoon, and coming up with my next coaching offer. Tune in to this episode to find out what it is! Focus on what you can do.Disconnect – Take a break. Remove yourself physically and electronically from your work. Don’t spend all of your time in your office.Prioritize Your Sleep – Make sure you’re getting at least eight hours of sleep. Turn off electronics one hours before bedtime, as this will increase your melatonin and help you sleep better.Exercise- Spike your energy at the beginning of the day with some exercise. This will also spike your mood. Exercise is proven to create a 12-hour mood boost, equivalent to taking antidepressants.Nutrition – Eat well. Choose the foods you know will be healthy for your mind and body. This will help you feel healthier and stronger.Clear Your Mind – Could you benefit from re-engaging in a spiritual practice that you have, or a religious practice, or simply meditation to calm the mind and give you clarity.Ask for Help – Let people know you are feeling down and express that need for help.Steer Clear of Bad Habits– Alcohol, medications, drugs can make burnout worse. Steer clear of anything that can add fuel to the fire.Be Social – Put yourself in social situations. We are social beings; we are meant to celebrate and enjoy life with other people. Make Time for Yourself Everyday – What is the number one thing you enjoy? Burnout. Compassion fatigue. Pandemic fatigue. The human race is experiencing the reality of these mental and emotional stresses every day. In today’s episode, we share with you the audio from a Coffee with the Coaches Facebook LIVE show we did on our page in January 2021. This content comes from leadership content that we created for one of our corporate clients and it is a much-needed, timely message that we can all benefit from! Grab your coffee and let’s discover how to avoid burnout and compassion fatigue… 3 Ways to Avoid Burnout and Compassion Fatigue: Tip 1: Be compassionate and caring of yourself! Most of us have harsh inner critics who judge us, put us down, and punish us when we make mistakes. As long as you have a tape in your head playing negativity and beating you up all day long, you’ll find it hard to be compassionate to your patients and their families. Seek out a trained professional, like a coach or counselor, to help you with your mindset. Being compassionate and caring toward yourself will go a long way in avoiding burnout and compassion fatigue! Tip 2: Manage your stress and emotions by UNPLUGGING from social media. People tend to forget that burnout and compassion fatigue can happen due to a lack of fun. Make it a point to schedule times for fun and relaxation every week. Start the gratitude journal. Implement steps for a better night sleep. Stay off of social media for 24-48 hours each week!!! Tip 3: Re-connect with your WHY. When you know your why, and remind yourself of it often, you will keep the feelings of indifference and carelessness at bay. It’s an important step to stay focused and avoid burnout and compassion fatigue. Quotes from this episode: “The inner bully is something we all need to learn how to take care of.” ~Raychel Perman, She Who Overcomes™ Podcast episode 69 “If you can’t tear yourself away from the train wreck of comments on social media, that’s a big sign that you need to unplug from social media!” ~Mandy B. Whether you’re an entrepreneur, a ministry leader, or just plain human, stress is a part of life, especially during the holiday rush. The more roles you juggle and the more demands you face, the easier it is to find yourself alone on Pain Island, feeling stress our and even burned out. That’s especially bad news if your livelihood depends on your creativity, since stress tends to make creativity vanish. In today’s episode, Jory and co-host Julie Fleming discuss the roots of stress—both positive and negative—and how to identify oncoming burnout. The discussion then shifts to action: what can you do to protect yourself and your creativity? How can you overcome obstacles, even the obstacles presented unintentionally by those you love? You’ll get ideas on how to set boundaries with clients and yourself, so you’ll work well and find refreshment, whether that’s for a week or just a few hours. Finally, Jory and Julie will share simple steps you can take to reduce stress right away, including how to set goals for effective practices that work instead of flash-in-the-pan empty promises. Julie A. Fleming, principal of Lex Innova Consulting, helps lawyers and other service professionals to create and implement innovative business development plans.
