E853 Setting Immediate Boundaries: How to Protect Your Energy the Right Way

Tactical Living

This episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, hosted by Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton, explores the importance of setting immediate boundaries (Amazon Affiliate Link), especially for first responders and military personnel who deal with high-stress environments. We discuss why setting boundaries early on is crucial for maintaining mental and emotional health and offer five practical ways to establish boundaries before they become a bigger problem. Why Setting Immediate Boundaries is Important: In high-demand careers like law enforcement and the military, it's easy to get overwhelmed when boundaries aren't set right away. We'll talk about how setting boundaries early protects your energy, mental health, and professional relationships. Five Ways to Set Boundaries Right Away: Be Direct and Honest from the Start: When someone asks you to do something and you're not in the right headspace, like being asked for an interview when you're not feeling friendly, being upfront is key. Saying, ""I'm not in the right mood for this right now,"" is a respectful way to set a boundary. Use "I" Statements: When setting a boundary, make it clear that it's about your needs, not the other person's behavior. For example, ""I need some time to decompress before I respond to this request,"" allows you to set a boundary without sounding accusatory. Recognize Your Limits Early: Understand what drains your energy and set boundaries around those areas before they start to take a toll. This might mean turning down extra shifts or saying no to social invitations when you need rest. Learn to Say No without Guilt: It's okay to say no, and you don't owe anyone an explanation. Saying no right away helps avoid resentment or burnout later. We'll discuss how to do this without feeling guilty. Communicate Your Boundaries Clearly: Whether it's with coworkers, friends, or family, make sure your boundaries are clearly communicated. For example, "I'm not available to talk during my downtime" or "I need 30 minutes of quiet time after a shift." Examples from Real-Life Scenarios: We'll share personal stories, like the time Ashlie set a boundary by telling someone she wasn't in a friendly mood for an interview, and how it was respected because of her clear communication. These real-world examples will show how setting boundaries early can improve relationships and reduce stress. The Consequences of Not Setting Boundaries: Failing to set boundaries early often leads to burnout, frustration, and strained relationships. We'll explore how setting boundaries right away can help prevent these issues from arising. Practical Tips for Setting Boundaries in High-Stress Jobs: We'll provide tips tailored to first responders and military personnel, such as how to communicate boundaries with colleagues, manage expectations with family, and protect your time off. Respecting Others' Boundaries: Just as it's important to set your own boundaries, respecting others' boundaries is equally crucial. We'll discuss how to recognize and respect the boundaries of others in both personal and professional settings. Join us as we provide you with the tools and tips you need to set boundaries right away, ensuring they don't become a problem later. In this insightful episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, hosts Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton delve into the crucial differences between authentic kindness and people-pleasing within first responder communities. Authentic Kindness vs. People-Pleasing: Navigating Healthy Boundaries in First Responder Roles explores how these behaviors affect personal well-being and professional relationships, offering strategies to foster genuine connections while maintaining healthy boundaries. Understanding Authentic Kindness and People-Pleasing (Amazon Affiliate): Discuss the definitions of authentic kindness and people-pleasing. Understand that while both involve offering help, their motivations and impacts on personal well-being are vastly different. Characteristics of Authentic Kindness: Motivation: Highlight that authentic kindness comes from a genuine desire to help others and care about their well-being. Impact on Relationships: Explore how this type of kindness feels fulfilling and enriches relationships. Boundaries: Discuss the importance of having boundaries which ensures that helping others does not come at the expense of one's own health. Mutual Benefits: Recognize that authentic kindness benefits both the giver and the receiver, enhancing feelings of satisfaction and connection. Characteristics of People-Pleasing: Motivation: Examine how people-pleasing often stems from a fear of rejection or a deep-seated need for approval. Impact on Relationships: Consider how people-pleasing can lead to resentment, burnout, and deteriorating relationships due to lack of sincerity. Lack of Boundaries: Discuss the dangers of not setting limits, which can lead to overextension and neglect of personal needs. Emotional Consequences: Understand how the pressure to please can be emotionally draining and confusing for both the pleaser and those around them. Strategies for Encouraging Authentic Kindness: Provide practical tips for first responders to cultivate authentic kindness in their professional and personal lives by recognizing genuine motives for helping, setting and respecting boundaries, and valuing sincere interactions over superficial approval. Navigating Away from People-Pleasing: Offer advice on how first responders can move away from people-pleasing behaviors by building self-esteem, practicing assertiveness, and learning to accept that it's impossible to please everyone. Summarize the importance of distinguishing between authentic kindness and people-pleasing. Emphasize the benefits of nurturing real, boundary-respecting relationships that contribute positively to one's mental health and professional satisfaction. Reflect on your own behaviors and motivations in helping others. Are they driven by a genuine desire to assist, or by a need for approval? Share your experiences and steps you've taken to cultivate authentic kindness or move away from people-pleasing in the Tactical Living community. This can inspire and support others in making similar positive changes. Tune into this episode to learn more about the impactful differences between authentic kindness and people-pleasing, and discover how to apply these insights to foster healthier relationships and a more rewarding life as a first responder. If you want to manifest a fulfilled life, but you have been people pleasing and saying yes to things that feel heavy and restricted rather than light and expansive, this episode is your wake-up call to stop people pleasing and start setting boundaries.  I almost didn't make this episode because I have always been someone who naturally sets boundaries even before knowing that that's what i was doing. This is not to say that i've been perfect at it, because there has been times where I didn't uphold my boundaries or let them be known, though they've been far and few between (and you will hear about this). But then I realized that by you listening to my experiences with setting boundaries, you could absolutely take away something helpful from it.  There's so many fears and misconceptions that people who don't set boundaries have about setting boundaries. You might fear that... -It's going to create conflict -People will be upset at you -People are going to think you're a bitch/not nice and your inner child will associate this with being a "bad girl" -You will no longer be seen as the kind/sweet/generous person you are or you may even view yourself as "too nice" and find yourself often receiving the craziest requests from people, surprised at their audacity, and often feeling like they're taking advantage of your kindness.  I'm here to address ALL the above, bust these misconceptions and ESPECIALLY that latter belief. Spoiler alert: You're not too nice. You just don't have boundaries and this is doing the world a disservice. When we think of boundaries, we often think of borders, gates, or walls—something to keep people out. But when it comes to our business or personal lives, boundaries are more of a safety net—something to protect us, our businesses, and our reputations. We need to have clear boundaries that set the expectations within our business. If we let these boundaries go unenforced (and let too many people cross them), this can lead to burnout, resentment, and potentially the loss of client relationships. In this episode, we talk about what boundaries are, why they're important, and how to enforce them. Here's a snapshot of what you'll hear:02:08 – What exactly are boundaries?04:42 – My favorite quote that hit me right in the gut while I was experiencing burnout06:52 – Why boundaries can be so difficult to enforce08:14 – How boundaries left unenforced is really just a form of disrespecting yourself…and how I learned this lesson the hard way11:38 – Examples of specific boundaries you can start setting in your business TODAYResources Discussed in This Episode:Set Boundaries, Find Peace by Nedra Glover Tawwab (affiliate link)Connect:Book a free 15-minute callJoin the Freelance Editors ClubTara on InstagramTara on Facebook
