Sumit Sharma and Chris Mitchell from Breaking Atoms podcast return to Flixwatcher to review Sumit's choice American Gangster. American Gangster (2007) is biographical crime thriller based on Harlem drug lord Frank Lucas. Directed by Ridley Scott and screenplay by Steven Zaillian based on the The Return of Superfly by Mark Jacobson. It's stacked cast features Denzel Washington as Frank Lucas, Russell Crowe as Richie Roberts, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Huey Lucas, Josh Brolin as Detective Trupo, RZA as Moses Jones, Cuba Gooding Jr. as Nicky Barnes, Armand Assante as Dominic Cattano, Idris Elba as Tango and Common as Turner Lucas. In 1960s Harlem Frank Lucas is Bumpy Johnson's right-hand man. When Bumpy dies of a heart attack Frank sees an opportunity to innovate in the drug trade by buying directly from the source in Vietnam and thus cutting out the middle man. Not only that, he trademarks his superior heroin as ‘Blue Magic' and its affordability eliminates the competition. All is going well for Frank until he comes under scrutiny from aspiring lawyer and honest detective Richie Roberts. American Gangster is solid crime drama with a standout performance from Denzel Washington. Like with many Hollywood adaptations what is true and what is there for dramatic effect is unclear but it does make a compelling story of a true life figure. Recommendability scores for American Gangster were high, with a runtime of nearly three hours repeat viewing scores were lower to give an overall rating of 3.88. Rupee Beer Launches Mango Wheat Ale

It's peak summertime and after the immense success of Rupee's award winning lager nearly two years ago, brothers Van & Sumit Sharma enlisted the strategic insight of global craft brewing legend and creator of iconic Pumpkinhead, one of the most successful seasonal beers to ever hit the market to brew their next highly anticipated sku. "The beer industry, South Asian community, and restaurant & food world have been asking us for months if we have any new beers coming out, and after much thought, research and development, we are excited to launch our signature Mango Wheat Ale on World Mango Day on July 22nd" Mangos are the national fruit of India and considered sacred symbols of proprietary and good luck. In fact, India is the largest consumer and supplier of mangos in the world. Taking the 'King of Fruits' the team wanted to brew an easy to drink summer ale which is smooth with hints of tropical aroma and mango flavor. The history of the mango dates back to 4000 BC on the Indian Subcontinent where over 1000 varieties of the fruit exist. One of these varieties, the Chaunsa mango was given its name by the revolutionary leader, Sultan Sher Shah Suri, creator of the modern day Indian Rupee which was the inspiration of the brand's first lager sku. In 1539, Sultan Sher Shah Suri defeated the second Moghal Emperor, Humayun, in the Battle of Chaunsa. In his extreme happiness, he commemorated the victory by naming his favorite variety of mango, the Chaunsa. After relocating back to America after years living in London & Australia, the brothers having grown up in the Indian restaurant trade their entire lives wanted to shake up an industry which they truly felt lacked representation, and which also continued to make sub-par beer not designed to pair with the spicy and flavorful foods they grew up on. Rupee Beer is available at national retailers such as Costco, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Total Wine, as well as top international restaurants within the Indian, Asian, Middle Eastern and Mexican category. We had the chance to chat with Van and Sumit Sharma, the founders of Rupee Beer - a craft beer specially designed to be paired with Indian and other spice-rich foods. We talked about their inspiration for the brew, their history growing up in the restaurant industry, how they've brought more diversity to the craft beer space, how they define success, and more!   ABOUT OUR GUESTS: Sumit and Van Sharma always found it frustrating that Indian beer giants never distributed to states like Maine in the early 90's. Both of them grew up in the Indian restaurant trade which their family has been in for over 45 years, but it wasn't until COVID that they both ended up living in Maine after being overseas in the UK and Australia. During that time, they set out to change the food and beverage arena in a bold, diverse, and innovative way. After partnering with global brewing legend Alan Pugsley, co-founder of Shipyard Brewing Company, they have taken what started as an idea to solve a problem of sourcing Indian beer in Maine and grown it into a dialogue of increasing ethnic diversity within the craft brewing scene.
