Hey guys,We finally got this show out after Lockdown and other obstacles that delayed out show. We are glad to have Paola back on the show after she had to go back to Brazil for family affairs. Today, we will give you two cocktails and also they both have one key ingredient in them. Bali Hai cocktail and Muerto Bali Hai (which is a spin off the original drink). Kahlua liqueur is used in both these drinks as it is National Kahlua Day February 27th. Now, I have a bad experience with this particular liqueur in my past. Do you remember that one spirit or liquor that you stay away from due to some dramatic event that happened with you at a young age. Kahlua is mine!! Listen tot he show to hear just what happened to me.So Bali Hai is a bar we covered previously on Mark's Adventures and has quit the background story. This bar was built originally for a movie crew filming and needed their own watering hole after a long day of shooting the film. It then was taken apart and transported to Shelter Island, San Diego. This man made island started with "The Hut" (which is Bali Hai before it was named). It wasn't doing well and so a financial advisor came into the bar to evaluate the value of the bar. He saw the view on the upper 360 deck and said "Bali Hai". This reference is to the movie South Pacific where secluded island was called Bali Hai by the locals. Mark tells this story better than me and so listen to his explanation of this bar. Now the Bali Hai cocktail usually is served in a Mr. Bali Hai mug which Mark will explain its history. On "Did you Know?" segment: we cover the cool facts about Kahlua (yes, I know...I talk about the one thing I am not a fan of). Cools facts like in Mexico the crops of coffee beans and sugar cane are across from each other and the locals have been combining them since 1936. Also, it is a key item in drinks like the White Russian, Black Russian, B-52 shooter, Espresso Martini, Brown Cow, Mudslide and more. You can also make your own Kahlua at home (why easier and last longer though to buy at the store, but if you want to experiment then we will tell you how). Vladimir Alexandrov discusses with Ivan two things which should be better known: both men who lived in Russia in the early part of the twentieth century. Vladimir Alexandrov taught courses in Yale's Slavic Department on nineteenth and twentieth-century Russian literature and culture from 1986 to 2018. While preparing to teach a graduate seminar on Russian émigré culture, he discovered Frederick Bruce Thomas, which resulted in the 2013 biography The Black Russian, which is now being developed into a dramatic TV series. In 2021, he published To Break Russia's Chains: Boris Savinkov and His Wars against the Tsar and the Bolsheviks, which is the biography of a remarkable revolutionary terrorist, political activist, government minister, and writer who has been described as "James Bond as written by Kafka." Vladimir's current project is a book about Russia's little-known support for the Union during the American Civil War. Find out more at www.valexandrov.com. Frederick Bruce Thomas was born in 1872 to former slaves and spent his youth on his family's prosperous farm in Mississippi. However, a resentful, rich white planter's attempt to steal their land forced them to escape to Memphis. And when Frederick's father was brutally murdered by another black man, the family disintegrated. After leaving the South and working as a waiter and valet in Chicago and Brooklyn, Frederick went to London in 1894, then traveled throughout Europe, and decided to go to Russia in 1899, which was highly unusual for a black American at the time. Frederick found no color line in Russia and made Moscow his home. During the next nineteen years he renamed himself “Fyodor Fyodorovich Tomas,” married twice, acquired a mistress, took Russian citizenship, and by dint of his talents, hard work, charm, and guile became one of the city's richest and most famous owners of variety theaters and restaurants. The Bolshevik Revolution ruined him and he barely escaped with his life and family to Turkey in 1919. Starting with just a handful of dollars out of the millions he had lost, Frederick made a second fortune in Constantinople by opening a series of celebrated nightclubs that introduced jazz to Turkey. However, because of the long arm of American racism, the xenophobia of the new Turkish Republic, and his own extravagance, he fell on hard times, was thrown into debtor's prison, and died in Constantinople in 1928.Although widely known during his lifetime, Frederick Thomas is now virtually forgotten. The few references to him that have been published during the past eighty years are all brief and often wrong. Vladimir Alexandrov, today's guest and author of the book “The Black Russian,” researched Frederick Thomas's life and times exhaustively in archives and libraries throughout the United States, as well as in Russia, France, England, and Turkey, and found a great deal of information about him. Frederick Thomas is fascinating because of the extraordinary way he escaped the constraints of his humble origins and being black in the United States, because of how his life went from rags to riches to ruin not once but twice as a consequence of revolutionary transformations in two exotic societies, and because of the contrasting roles that race played in his life abroad--from being invisible in Russia, to returning to haunt him in Turkey, when he most needed help and the American government turned him down.
If you've caught some of the exciting new writing coming from the relaunch of Gawker, you may have read some food writing by Tammie Teclemariam, who's been taking down moka pots, making the case for buying a whole ham, and lauding the Black Russian as a far superior alternative to the espresso martini craze. Tammie's also written for TASTE about the virtues of fried chicken livers, how Caraflex is the ultimate cabbage flex, and why mozzarella in carrozza is the fanciest iteration of a grilled cheese. We talked about some of the joys (and terrors) of whole-ham ownership, as well as a few unexpectedly cool ideas for holiday drinking. After recording the episode, it was announced that Tammie will be New York Magazine's first ever Diner-at-Large. You can follow along with her eating and writing in 2022 here. Also on this episode, hosts Anna Hezel and Matt Rodbard dive into the topic of nonalcoholic drinks for celebratory occasions—all of the sodas, seltzers, and beers that are worth pulling out for a toast, including drinks from Kimino, Casamara Club, and Athletic Brewing. Finally, Matt recalls his grandma Gert's stash of Canfield's Diet Chocolate Fudge in Highland Park, Illinois. This is the last of our four-parter on the gender orthodoxy, as the review of this show by CFUR is over and we have been summarily canceled from the public airwaves in Canada. So, unrestrained by the fear of cancelation, we have a great discussion with a young, lesbian, Marxist intellectual heavyweight with a great sense of humour.

Part 2 of my podcast with my old Filmmaking Partner of "Black Russian Films" We discuss our adventures in film school, some old classmates, funny stories about filmmaking, our connection to Papa Smurf and re-creating the 1992 LA Riots with Legos.
This is part #1 of a two part podcast with my old filmmaking partner Kareem from Brooks Institute of Photography. We went by Black Russian Films with an inner city socially conscious portfolio film called My Brother's Keeper. Kareem shares some stories he faced when it comes to Police Harassment.
To continue our journey into the lives of lesser known queens who suffered some sort of isolation, we bring you Sophia Alekseyevna of Russia. Sophie was daughter and sister to the tsars of Russia. She was the first woman to act as regent in 200 years, but not everything went according to plan. We pair this episode with a drink called the Black Russian and it is just as strong as Sophia herself! Cheers! In case you missed it, we recently sampled the Black Russian drink. In this outtake - the Russians took over Lawyers on the Rocks intro. Enjoy.
On this weeks episode the lawyers sample the Black Russian. This week the Mueller Investigation formally concluded, turned over their report to the DOJ, and the DOJ promptly released a summary (and nothing else). Our nickname for this cocktail is the "Robert Mueller." We have a number of fun topics including: Juvenile waivers and the Damascus HS wrestling team incident, what happened and why. I can't believe it's not Baltimore: Vladamir Putin arrested on trespassing charges. When sports turn real: Assaults from a sporting event. Lawyers on the Rocks features Jeremy Eldridge, Kurt Nachtman and Adam Crandell. This triumvirate of lawyers will give you their unsolicited opinion on everything legal and illegal, while enjoying a handcrafted cocktail. Lawyers on the Rocks is sponsored by the Law Office of Eldridge, Nachtman & Crandell, LLC and produced by Up Next Creative, LLC.

Blended in honour of the drink of the same name is The Beardy Beard Co Black Russian beard balm. The scent is a blend of Vanilla pure, Coffee Arabica, Sweet Orange, Clove & Bay essential oils and the result is a sweetness from the vanilla and Orange followed by a coffee scent that smells like coffee beans and not a stale coffee.
Q.Z. Tha Leader is an American Hip-Hop recording artist, songwriter and producer from Biloxi, Mississippi now residing in Portland, Oregon. A true renaissance artist of his generation whom takes pride in writing, producing, and arranging all of his own music. Q.Z. has opened for some of the greatest in hip-hop like Juvenile, Mystikal, and Choppa. He is best known for his 2013 viral internet hit Black Russian. The song and the accompanying video racked up over 37k views in little over a week. Having been signed to indie major labels in the past, Q.Z. prefers the freedom that the independent route provides. Releasing music to the people that support him is what Q.Z. values the most. In 2014, the southern producer and wordsmith released a collaborative EP titled Moments Of Genius Opus: Part 1 independently. The opus was Q.Z.'s 3rd solo effort. The EP was featured on over 90 blogs and spawned the viral hits Monte' Carlo and Blood Stained Chanel. Q.Z. dropped the follow up, Moments Of Genius Opus Part: 2 ten months later. The project received rave reviews led by the self produced track, Blame Me. Balloons In Tha Wind is Q.Z.’s latest offering in 2017. The gritty drum work quantifies the sonics from hip-hop’s golden age. This record is a nod to those crate digging, analog days. When music was meant to be felt, rather than heard.

Rebroadcast The Black Russian with Valdimir Alexandrov, Ph.D. The Black Russian tells the story of Frederick Bruce Thomas, who was born in 1872 to former slaves and spent his youth on his family’s farm in Mississippi. After leaving the South and working as a waiter and valet in Chicago and Brooklyn, he went to London in 1894, then traveled throughout Europe, and decided to go to Russia in 1899, all of which was highly unusual for a black American at the time. He chose Moscow as his home, and during the next nineteen years renamed himself “Fyodor Fyodorovich Tomas,” married twice, acquired a mistress, took Russian citizenship, and by dint of his talents, hard work, charm, and guile became one of the city’s richest and most famous owners of variety theaters and restaurants. The Bolshevik Revolution ruined him and he barely escaped with his life and family to Turkey in 1919. Starting with just a handful of dollars out of the millions he had lost, Thomas made a second fortune in Constantinople by opening a series of celebrated nightclubs that introduced jazz to Turkey. However, because of the long arm of American racism, the xenophobia of the new Turkish Republic, and his own extravagance, he fell on hard times, was thrown into debtor's prison and died in Constantinople in 1928. Dr. Alexandrov is the B. E. Bensinger Professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures and Acting Chair, Slavic Department at Yale University. www.valexandrov.com

The Black Russian with Vladimir Alexandrov Bernice Bennett host welcomes Vladimir Alexandrov, Ph.D., for an engaging discussion of his book, The Black Russian. He will explore the process of researching and writing this compelling story. Vladimir Alexandrov, the B.E. Bensinger Professor of Slavic Languages and Literature at Yale University joins The Halli Casser-Jayne Show to talk about his new book, "The Black Russian," in which he tells the little-known true story of Frederick Bruce Thomas, who left the color-conscious Mississippi Delta, seeking a better life.Frederick found freedom and extraordinary success in, of all places, Moscow where he renamed himself Fyodor Fyodorovich Tomas. But thans to the Bolshevik Revolution he was forced to escape his adopted country, leaving everything he'd built behind to start over in Constantinople. Once again his brain and brawn led him to success, when he opened what became a series of celebrated nightclubs and introducing jazz to Turkey. Sadly, the long arm of American racism, the xenophobia of the new Turkish Republic, and Frederick's own extravagance landed him in debtor's prison. He died in Constantinople in 1928. With the stamp of approval of some of the African-American communities most prominent voices, including those of Cornel West and Dr. Henry Louis Gates, "The Black Russian," is a story you won't want to miss.
Vladimir Alexandrov‘s new book The Black Russian (Atlantic Monthly Press, 2013) tells the epic and often tragic story of Fredrick Bruce Thomas, an African American born to recently freed slaves, who would go on to make a fortune in Russia as a club owner and entrepreneur. Mr. Thomas was a pioneer in many respects. He migrated North in search of opportunity decades before the Great Migration. He fled the states in pursuit of greater prospects in Europe before it was fashionable for blacks to do so. He confronted and combated many of the forces that would shape the 20th century – racism, classism, and nativism – yet his story was little known to us until now. Learn more about your ad choices.
