What if the hardest moments in our lives were also the ones that woke us up the most? What if loss, caregiving, and midlife unraveling weren't just things to endure but were actually invitations to live more fully? Today, we're having one of those conversations—the kind that's raw, real, and full of heart. My guest is Katie Prentiss, an actress, filmmaker, and storyteller who found herself at a crossroads after losing her mother to frontotemporal dementia. That loss sent her into a deep reevaluation of life, leading her to embrace risk, creativity, and the kind of aliveness that only comes from facing the hard stuff head-on. Katie's journey is one so many of us will recognize—caring for someone we love, navigating grief, and wrestling with the unknown. She talks about the contraction and expansion of life, the fear of genetic illness, and how caregiving shifts our perspective—much like becoming a parent does. Through it all, she's chosen to create. Her upcoming film, Wake Up, Maggie, is a love letter to caregivers, midlife transformations, and the moments that shake us awake. It's an honest look at what it means to let go, rebuild, and embrace the messiness of our lives. Today, we talk about what it means to step into the unknown, why telling these stories matters, and how we can support one another in making them heard. Katie's reflections on fear, creativity, and resilience are deeply moving, and I have no doubt you'll walk away feeling a little more alive yourself. Thank you, Katie! In this week's episode, Tracy speaks with Crystal Mackay about “Telling Our Story As Farmers.” “We need to tell our story to consumers!” How many times have we heard this? As farmers, we hear this and agree that we should share our story. We really want to, but when the time comes to start sharing our story, we don't know what to say or how to say it, and we are also likely more than a tiny bit concerned about getting attacked. Sound familiar? We hear you, which is precisely what Tracy speaks to Crystal about in this episode. Crystal shares her background and passion for connecting farmers and urban consumers, which resulted in her launching Loft32, utensil.ca, and gathering their stable of over 30 speakers available for events. Many farmers want to speak up and share their stories, but when it comes time, we are often unsure what exactly we should and shouldn't say. Crystal shares some of the biggest mistakes we make as farmers when sharing our stories and gently highlights areas for improvement. She then shares her three most important tips for successfully sharing our story with our consumers. If you are a farmer looking to learn how to share your farming story better, you won't want to miss this episode. Also, check out Crystal's great training, which we discussed in today's episode. The Tom Ficklin Show: Embracement & Pipeline Programs “Telling Our Story” by WNHH Community Radio
Josiah Brown (Famous Destination Marketing) is one of this sector's newest thought leaders. We had the opportunity to work with Josiah on a destination assessment project in 2018 and were instantly taken by his "outsider" grasp of the intricacies of Destination Marketing. In this episode, we go deep on his take on what DMO pros get wrong when explaining the power of what we do...as well as his thoughts on the muddled state of branding, taglines and campaigns. And, a pretty hilarious story about his first job in the world of septic fields. Trust us...this is one of the hot new voices in our sector. Enjoy.
THE TOM FICKLIN SHOW Telling Our Story With Dr. Britnee Williams by WNHH Community Radio
Time again for self-reflection... I've been working through the idea of what it means and why it matters to share our stories with each other. I may have talked myself in circles. This is something I need to put more effort into understanding. Any feedback would be very welcome: vulnerabilitylifeart@gmail.com

I think everybody feels kind of isolated in their stuff until you start talking about it, and then other people that you're talking to will be like, "Oh yeah, well let me tell you what happened to me." So, it was mind-blowing to me because I thought the things that had happened to me were isolated to me. Well, why is that? Well, because we never talked about it, especially when things happen in Black families. We aren't supposed to talk about it. But I realized once I wrote this book, listen, you gonna have to talk about it. So, I started to talk, and that made others feel like they had a safe space to talk about some difficult things.Connect with ElzieLinkedInConnect with Tonya McKenzieLinkedInWebsiteFacebookXSand & ShoresMentioned in this episode:Podcast TownCheck out our services for your B2B brand! In this conversation with renowned speaker, writer, activist and artist, Lisa Sharon Harper, we discuss Lisa's own genealogy, which she painstakingly researched for her 2022 book FORTUNE: How Race Broke My Family and the World and How to Repair It All, and how doing the work of genealogy is doing the work of history. We also got into some theology! In particular, we explored a profound reading of the first chapters of Genesis. Spoiler alert: I love when Lisa said, "It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know this is not science!" The truths communicated in Genesis are much more profound than the reductionist reading of some of our young earth creationist friends. That leads us to explore the concept of TOV and TOV M'OD. And we went on to discuss what it will take to repair what race broke in the world. Lisa Sharon Harper is the founder of Freedom Road, a consulting group dedicated to shrinking the narrative gap by designing forums and experiences that bring common understanding, common commitment and common action. Ms. Harper leads trainings all around the globe that increase clergy and community leaders' capacity to organize people of faith toward a just world. She is the author of several books, including the critically acclaimed The Very Good Gospel: How Everything Wrong Can Be Made Right and Fortune: How Race Broke My Family and the World and How to Repair It All. She also writes extensively on shalom and governance, immigration reform, health care reform, poverty, racial and gender justice, climate change, and transformational civic engagement with her work appearing in numerous national publications as well as her Substack The Truth Is... Ms. Harper earned her Masters degree in Human Rights from Columbia University, is an Auburn Theological Seminary Senior Fellow, has begun working on her PhD in Christian Public Ethics with Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam aka the VU and also served as Sojourners Chief Church Engagement Officer. In this episode of the Sage Advice podcast, host Chris Bonnell speaks with Allen Clarkson, Government Relations Manager at Western Governors University (WGU), discussing the incredible growth and evolution of the university over the years.Clarkson, who joined WGU as a contracted employee in 2005, shares his journey from grading papers for the IT college to becoming a pivotal part of WGU's expansion, holding 15 different titles in various departments. Initially intending to stay at WGU only for a short term, Clarkson was drawn in by the innovative model of the institution and the opportunity to contribute to something bigger.Underlining WGU's extraordinary growth from 2,000 to 132,000 active students, Clarkson attributes this success to the quality of education, commitment to innovation, and their focus on governmental relations. He discusses how WGU matured alongside internet technology, constantly learning to leverage it to better support students, and developing a unique model providing students with five points of contact within the faculty. However, the institution's expansion was not just about growing numbers but also about creating meaningful relationships with elected officials. WGU, originally founded by states for states, has never lost sight of its roots. The Government Relations team, including Clarkson, focuses on advancing policies that enhance access to education and uphold the credibility of a WGU degree. As a result, they've established partnerships with 13 affiliate states, creating opportunities for thousands of potential students.According to Clarkson, when partnering with a state, WGU doesn't focus on what they can gain but rather what they can contribute to the state and their students. Through this student-centric approach and consistent advocacy, WGU has grown into an institution beyond Clarkson's imagination.Bonnell's sage advice is inspired by Clarkson's favorite saying, "Don't leave 10 minutes before the miracle happens." He expresses gratitude for Clarkson's dedication and contributions to WGU's evolution, which illustrates the miraculous impact of staying committed to a vision. In all, this conversation offers insights into the remarkable growth of WGU, underlining the value of innovation, student-centricity, and beneficial partnerships.
