This week's episode begins in full “Bad Dads” mode: we're recording with barely any gear in sight, arguing about blinking lights, and realising—mid-flow—that “Island Week” might have scrambled everyone's brains. But the chaos is fitting, because the film we tackle is The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996)… a movie so famously cursed it feels like it was assembled in a panic from whatever footage survived the production.Based on the H.G. Wells story, it follows Edward Douglas (David Thewlis), a plane-crash survivor rescued at sea and dumped onto a remote island run by the mysteriously missing (and very infamous) Dr. Moreau (Marlon Brando). Douglas is told not to wander. Naturally, he wanders—straight into a nightmare lab of human–animal hybrids, bizarre rituals, and creatures that look like they were costumed by a school drama department on a tight deadline. What we cover in the episodeWhy this film is notorious: the on-set chaos, the director being fired two days in, and the sense the final cut is basically a patchwork survival story.Brando's “what am I watching?” performance: whiteface, robe, bizarre headgear, godlike status on the island… and an energy that suggests nobody was in control.Val Kilmer as peak 90s disaster energy: an increasingly unhinged presence, and how behind-the-scenes dysfunction seems to bleed into the film itself. The hybrids: early reveals, dodgy prosthetics, worse CGI, and one moment that completely breaks the brain (yes, a human-llama birth). The island society: worship, obedience via pain-inducing implants, and the whole thing drifting into cult vibes. When it goes full pantomime: the uprising, the armory, and the film's most unintentionally hilarious image—a creature firing a machine gun with a hoof.A bleak, messy ending: power vacuums, violence, and an escape plan so flimsy the biggest concern becomes… why isn't he wearing a hat?The verdictThis isn't a “good film” recommendation. This is a you-have-to-see-it recommendation. It's only about 90 minutes, it's weirdly breezy, and it's endlessly watchable as a cinematic car crash—especially if you enjoy hearing us dissect disasters while laughing at the parts that clearly should not be funny. If you like cult curios, notorious flops, and episodes where we're basically reviewing the production meltdown as much as the movie itself—this one's for you.You can now text us anonymously to leave feedback, suggest future content or simply hurl abuse at us. Daniel Parra reviews the sequel to Blumhouse's breakout hit, "Five Nights at Freddy's 2" based on the hit videogame, directed by Emma Tammi and written by original creator Scott Cawthon. The first one was a surprise hit, but can they follow up with a solid sequel that expands on the FNAF lore, the characters, and the animatronics? If you're looking for a review that breaks down the movie and answers all of these questions, look no further! But the question is...did you love it, did you hate it, or are you Somewhere Between!?

Matt Stoller, author of the Substack newsletter BIG, joins Bradley to dig into how the rise of AI mirrors the early internet—when regulators failed to check the dominance of Google, Facebook, and others. Stoller argues that America's political elites, especially under Obama, confused “freedom from restriction” with “freedom from mastery,” enabling corporate monopolies to become de facto rulers of public life. Without decisive policy intervention, he warns, AI will consolidate under the same few tech giants—most likely Google—and deepen the country's oligarchic tendencies. This episode was taped at P&T Knitwear at 180 Orchard Street — New York City's only free podcast recording studio.Send us an email with your thoughts on today's episode: info@firewall.media.Be sure to watch Bradley's new TED Talk on Mobile Voting at https://go.ted.com/bradleytusk.Subscribe to Bradley's weekly newsletter and follow Bradley on Linkedin + Substack + YouTube.

Vampire Insider: An AMC Anne Rice's Immortal Universe After Show
During the inter-season break, the vampire insiders are doing deep dives into the episodes, chatting about other kinds of creature media and in today's episode, we are looking hard at the 2002 film Queen of the Damned, which seems to have nothing to do with the source material except for the characters' names. From wikipedia: The vampire Lestat is awakened from decades of slumber by the sound of a hard rock band, and proceeds to take over as their lead singer. Achieving international success, Lestat, having revealed the existence of vampires, taunts the others of his kind during an interview for promoting his first and only live concert. Jesse Reeves, a researcher for the paranormal studies group Talamasca, is intrigued by Lestat's lyrics after hearing one of his songs play on TV and tells the rest of the group her theory that he really is a vampire. Her mentor, David Talbot, takes her aside and tells her they know what he is and that a vampire called Marius made him. David also shows her Lestat's journal. In the journal, Lestat recalls how he was turned into a vampire by Marius and how he awoke Akasha, the first vampire, with his music. Jesse tracks Lestat down to a London vampire club called The Admiral's Arms, where he saves her and confronts her about Marius. In Los Angeles, Lestat is visited by Marius, who warns him that the other vampires will not tolerate his flamboyant public profile. He begs him to cancel his concert, which he refuses. Meanwhile, awakened Akasha, who is searching for Lestat, arrives at The Admiral's Arms. After the vampires reveal their plan to kill Lestat Akasha torches the club. Jesse arrives at Los Angeles and gives Lestat his journal and asks him to show her what being a vampire is like. Lestat scoffs at the idea, but Jesse convinces him to spend his last moments before the concert with her. Jesse later asks Lestat to turn her, telling him she wants to be with him and that she wants to know everything he does. Lestat angrily refuses, and shows her what it's like for a vampire to feed aggressively on a human. While performing at his concert in Death Valley, a group of vampires attack Lestat. With Marius' help, they both fend off most of the vampires until Akasha bursts through the stage and takes Lestat with her. Akasha brings Lestat to her new home, where the two vampires have sexual intercourse, during which time Lestat becomes spellbound by Akasha and is forced to obey her, and Akasha proclaims Lestat her new king. After the concert, Jesse is taken to the home of her aunt, Maharet, who later reveals herself to be one of the Ancient Vampires. The Ancient Vampires discuss their plans to destroy the Queen by drinking from her and draining her of her blood. However, they believe that whoever drinks the Queen's last drop will not survive. Empowered by Akasha's blood, Lestat and the Queen confront the Ancient Vampires. When they refuse to join her, Akasha then commands Lestat to kill Jesse, as The Queen sees her both as an enemy, due to being Maharet's descendant, and as food, with Akasha making an example out of her for those who dare disobey her command. After drinking Jesse's blood, Lestat comes to his senses and is released from Akasha's power. Lestat then turns on her and begins to drain Akasha's blood. With the help of the Ancients, Akasha's power diminishes. Maharet is the last to drink Akasha's blood, killing Akasha. Lestat goes to Jesse and, cradling her in his arms, gives her his blood as Maharet turns into a marble statue and "sleeps"; the new Queen of the Damned. Lestat and Jesse visit David and return Lestat's journal. Jesse offers to turn David into a vampire to which he replies he's too old for immortality. Jesse then bids David goodbye and leaves with Lestat. A few moments later, David is greeted by Marius. The film closes with Lestat and Jesse walking hand in hand, among mortals, into the night. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/vampire-insider/message
