Adul Samon was one of 12 boys who, along with their soccer coach, were trapped in a flooded underground cave in Thailand in 2018. Their dramatic rescue was recently made into the film Thirteen Lives, directed by Ron Howard. Adul was instrumental in the rescue effort because, as the only English speaker in the group, he was able to effectively communicate with divers and relay vital information to his teammates, which helped them survive the almost two-week ordeal. He has since immigrated to the United States and is an undergraduate student at Middlebury College.

A cave in Thailand, an adventurous soccer team, and an Aussie anaesthetist who just happened to list cave diving a hobby. We won't spoil it when we say this story has a happy ending, you already knew that. But what we discover in this chat with Dr Richard Harris is the specifics of how he ended up inside that cave and the complex moral decisions he faced, all while the world watched on. Just wait until you hear how the boys decided the order in which they'd be rescued — you won't believe it. It was an honour to speak to Dr Harry, former Australian of the year and reluctant hero. Hey, welcome to Episode #76 Looking Back - The Best of Speaking Sidemount brought to by XDEEP with the support of the patrons of Speaking Sidemount. Huge thanks to both!!! This episode looks back over the first 75 episodes with me handpicking some of my very favourite segments. This was such a challenging task and what I find remarkable now that it's done, is just how much great material I have left out... maybe a part 2?? Let me know if you'd like to hear that. Listen in as I talk with Michur about what it takes to achieve his extraordinary skill level. Steve Bogaerts shares on the modern history of sidemount and how to build comfort in the water. Edd Sorenson talks about cave diving rescues and recoveries before we relive the fantastic story of the Thai Cave rescue with Richard "Harry" Harris and Chris Jewell. Jill Heinerth speaks on dealing with fear in cave diving and her beginnings in Sidemount. I reconnected with Audrey Cudel to talk about the key aspects of refining your sidemount setup, Nat Gibb shares about her passion for caves and what it takes to dive the caves of Mexico. Huge thanks to Gold Patron Justin Enzmann for suggesting this episode. It was awesome to catch up with Justin on the show and chat about his diving and we've even arranged to meet later this year when we are both in Mexico.
Craig Challen, the co-author of Against All Odds, is releasing a young reader's edition of the remarkable true story of the Tham Luang Thai cave rescue. Alongside his mate and fellow cave diver Richard Harris, the pair are releasing an edition of the story that captured the whole world's attention on the 2nd of August. Mr Challen told Gareth Parker on 6PR Breakfast that he hoped an edition for a different audience would inspire young people.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Dr Stephen Rush is a Lt. Colonel and Flight Surgeon. He is the former medical director for Pararescue and the current medical group commander of the 106th Rescue Air Wing in New York. He is a radiation oncologist by trade but brings a wealth of experience in operational medicine to the table. Dr Rush was a key consultant for the Thai Cave rescue that is an international success story and template for operational medicine during a crisis. Dr Rush led the discussion by explaining the role of pararescue jumpers as well as the intense training they endure before they are qualified for the role. We discussed how the paradigm has shifted from taking the experience from the hospital in bringing it to the field to the reverse of this. We provided examples that included the use of tourniquets, tranexamic acid as well as field imputation. Next, we explored the actual Thai cave rescue mission. We discussed the experience and expertise that the para rescue jumpers brought to this stage. We also discussed the importance of cooperation of the local government and response structure. We delved into the importance of debriefing in planning that included cooperativity amongst not only many different agencies within but also among the international response teams. Doctor Rush then gave an overview of how the rescue came to fruition, including the rehearsals as well as the medical planning that ultimately led to the successful rescue of all the Thai children. We finished with a few take-home points as well as highlighting some of the work of other experts that were integral to the success of the mission. John Volanthen was at the absolute epicentre of one of the biggest global stories in 2018. Before COVID took over the international news cycle, 12 boys and their soccer coach became stuck in a flooded Thai cave, and the world watched the increasingly desperate rescue effort. The first person to reach the boys was John, a cave diver, who then helped to get them to safety. He's an IT consultant by day, but also a world record-holding British caver and diver.Jack Tame has been speaking to him, and started with claustrophobia was ever an issue when he was first learning to cave dive. Awesome to be able to share Episode #64 - Mikko Paasi brought to you with the support of XDEEP and the patrons of Speaking Sidemount. Huge thanks to both for their support. By now the name Mikko Paasi is, or should be well known to all of us as a key member of the support diver team that contributed massively to the positive outcome of the Thai Cave rescue. Hailing from Finland, Mikko owns Kho Tao Divers in Thailand and beyond his exploits in the rescue, Mikko is a cave diver and dedicated wreck explorer. In particular, he is involved in a number of awesome shipwreck exploration projects in SE Asia under the auspices of Bottomline projects. In this episode, Mikko shares on his background in diving, how he ended up in Thailand and of course his reflection on the Thai Cave Rescue nearly three years later. Mikko tells us about his experiences returning to the Tham Luang cave system and seeing the passages dry after the floodwaters had receded. We talk about his new venture in Malta and then cover plenty on sidemount diving, sidemount rebreathers including the SF2 and KISS Sidewinder and then look forward to meeting up at the FLOW Sidemount event to be held in Sardinia later this year... Thanks again for your support :)! Cheers Steve
Simon Baker's directorial debut centres around the events in Thailand that captured the world's attention in mid 2018. A junior football team and their assistant coach became trapped in the Tham Luang cave after heavy rains flooded the only available exit, making their escape extremely unlikely… Needless to say, the film ‘Thai Cave Boys' looks excellent PLUS Sydney has changed their public transport opal card reader sound effects, Mitch has started putting milk replacement formula in his cappuccinos, and we play our new game Famous Twins! I'm super excited to publicly release Episode #50 with Chris Jewell. Previously this episode was only available to Patrons of Speaking Sidemount and is brought to you with the support of XDEEP. Chris is a member of the British Cave Diving Group and was part of the team involved in the acclaimed Thai Cave rescue. Chris took part in the actual extraction dives of the rescue and in doing so became part of history as a key part of one of the greatest rescues of modern times. Awards, accolades and numerous TV and speaking appearances followed and so it was awesome nearly 2 years later to catch up with Chris and ask him about how he got into cave diving, his experience in training and becoming part of the CDG, the importance of mentoring to the CDG training process. Chris reflects on his experience in Thailand some two years after the rescue, and he shares more on his terrifying lost line episode while extracting one of the boys from the cave. Chris and I discuss the distinctions between sump diving and traditional cave diving, how this then drives decisions about your equipment configuration. We dive into detail on Chris' UK sump diving sidemount set up, we talk conceptually about carrying a long hose, gas sharing scenarios, and some of Chris' favourite cave exploration projects. Enjoy, Steve
On a warm summer day, a soccer team entered the Tham Luang Cave System for a quick adventure before a birthday celebration. What a year Pararescueman TSgt Kenneth "OB" O'Brien has had! First he was part of the Thai Cave rescue operations, treated a Korean after a tractor fire, was part of President Trump's medical protection detail, saved an infant on his flight on the way to be named United States Air Force 12 Outstanding Airmen Of The Year! All of this happened in a span of a year, while most people wait their entire career for these opportunities. OB is an absolute stud, but he comes with baggage. He is affectionately referred to by his teammates as a "Black Cloud", but he prefers to be considered a "Gray Cloud" because not everything that happens around him turns out bad! Enjoy getting to know OB as we have and we look forward to having him on the podcast again. On 23rd June 2018, 12 boys went exploring in Thailand's Chiang Rai province with their football coach - and ended up trapped deep inside a cave underneath a mountain. What happened over those two weeks is a remarkable story that captivated the world. Diver Erik Brown was part of the team of volunteers who took part in the rescue operation - spending 63 hours within the cave. This is the full story of Thailand’s extraordinary cave rescue, told through his eyes.

Two Australian medics have received an award for helping rescue a Thai football team trapped in a cave. On Australia Day this year, Dr. Richard Harris and Dr. Craig Challen received the Australian of the Year award. The award is given to distinguished Australians who served as role models for others. Dr. Harris and Dr. Challen were honored for their participation in the rescue of 12 athletes and their team coach from a Thai cave last year. Both medics greatly contributed in rescuing the team. Dr. Harris put his life at risk to reach the cave where the team was trapped. He also gave the boys and their coach sedatives to calm them down before they were led out of the cave through tunnels. He reportedly stayed in the cave until everyone was safely evacuated. Dr. Challen, on the other hand, was one of the people who played a crucial role in evacuating the team members one at a time through the cave tunnels. In response to the recognition he received, Dr. Harris said that he wants the award to serve as an inspiration for children to explore more. He hopes that children would see exploring their surroundings as a way of challenging themselves. Aside from being named Australian of the Year, the two men have also been conferred the Star of Courage and the Medal of the Order of Australia. The Star of Courage is awarded to people who have demonstrated exceptional bravery in the face of danger. On the other hand, the Medal of the Order of Australia is given to those who have done outstanding service.
When it comes to the history of sidemount diving, all roads lead back to the UK and the sump divers of the Cave Diving Group or CDG. The CDG gained world-wide attention and recognition following their stellar contribution to the Thai Cave rescue. In this week's episode kindly sponsored by XDEEP, I interview Michael Thomas. Mike is the Training Officer for the Somerset Section of the Cave Diving Group (CDG) and a TDI Sidemount and Cave Instructor. Mike and I go deep into: his background in diving the CDG, their approach to cave diving, training and equipment the differences between cave, mine and wreck diving the KISS Sidewinder rebreather Mike's recent discovery of Roman artifacts in Wookey Hole and much more... Hello there folks, this week we're talking about the Thai Cave Hoax and how Elon Musk was set up by the New World Order to look like a goose. Then we fire up our digital TVs and spin it over to Channel 44, which is where Channel 31 lives with a whole bunch of massively cooked units.
Jack Allison (Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Funny or Die) and Joe Hartzler (Acting Tips, Brooklyn 99) are notorious for their spicy Twitter feeds, and we get into it on this episode of The MEAT. Jack tells the story of how he gave up on the entertainment industry and took a job at Best Buy. Joe talks about a time he got stuck in a cave not unlike the soccer players in Thailand. Then we do scenes about Twitter overlords, George Clooney becoming a "normal person", sharks with book deals and a whole bunch more. Being stuck in a dark underground cave is a childhood nightmare for every kid. On june 23rd 12 boys belonging to the wild boars football team in Thailand along with their coach went adventuring into a cave near the Thai-Myanmar border. But the weather went bad to worse, the rain came down hard and filled the cave with water, trapping all of them behind a kilometers long maze of passages. It took the entire team to complete the rescue within three weeks. Certainly this Thai story had offered more vision of globalisation. The story of this rescue mission had made the whole world fixed, and together the world celebrated as "One" when everyone were rescued. This is a brilliant reminder of a more collective vision, where countries are ready to hold each other's hand when needed, and prosper by collective HOPE and not combat. Cause hope is a good thing, maybe the best thing and No good thing ever dies.
Former search and rescue diver, wreckmaster and private investigator Derrick Snowdy joins Alex to speak about the end of the rescue mission of the Thai soccer team.
Chuck and Sham argue about what it takes to get "bitches" lol We give an update on the Thai Cave rescue, the NBA, and J Hills Road Trip!
Abdul and Collin talk about the Thai soccer team trapped in the cave. Let the record show that Abdul is very anti-cave in this particular instance. Collin goes on a tirade about Tanacon and those poor kids that got scammed. They talk about the Shane Dawson documentary and how the entire ordeal unfolded. Whose fault is it, Tana Mongeau or the weird dude with the segway and tacky earrings? Abdul decides Nepotism is a good thing and wants to breed children solely for the purpose of hiring his own offspring and keeping the money in the family. Peaches is lovable as always. Jim Geraghty of National Review and Greg Corombos of Radio America herald the divers successfully rescuing the young Thai soccer players trapped in the cave and pray everyone else can be brought to safety tomorrow. Greg rolls his eyes at reports that Hillary Clinton may be planning a 2020 presidential bid but Jim explains how a crowded field and the notion that history robbed her in 2016 could propel her to the nomination. And they get a kick out of the media pumping out conflicting reports about which of the final four Supreme Court possibilities will be chosen by President Trump today.
8 boys have been rescued from the cave in Thailand, Newport Beach police tweet in the voice of a girl murdered 45 years ago in effort to find the killer, A top San Bernardino County prosecutor is under fire for offensive social media posts, Rebecca Jarvis has all the latest market news, and Wall Street Journal reporter John Carreyrou tells us about exposing Theranos fraud Elizabeth Holmes.
If you've been following the story of the teacher and students who were rescued from the cave in Thailand, another kid was found.
Sammy Deedge joins a prickly Jack for a cracking episode. Straight off the bat Sam gets his right of reply to the roast he received from DJ Paine last week. Then in our main topic Jack gives a rant of a lifetime in regards to Arenanet firing two of its employees over a twitter row. In rapid fire the Thailand Cave story is discussed, Jar Jar Binks actor Ahmed Best shares his struggles and the boys give their thoughts. The controversy around confronting video game Doki Doki Literature Club and it’s role in the suicides of several young people is juxtaposed with the responsibility of creators to warn consumers about its content. Scarlett Johansson playing a trans man is also talked over before the boys touch on the tragedy of 2 possibly 3 poachers being eaten alive by lions... atebit.net Hosts: Jack Kruse - @Krusey_mate Sammy Deedge - @SammyDeedge Intro and Outro Music - Blast Process by Julian Bowen
