There are two things I'm really passionate about in my teaching: One is dismantling the notion of linear, hierarchical, universal progress, especially when it comes to movement. The other is teaching in a way that students feel 100% agency to make autonomous, empowered, educated decisions about their own movement practice. These two concepts come together really beautifully when we unpack regressions and progressions in movement because for every modification that could be considered a regression there is an example of the kind of body or situation in which that version is actually a progression and vice versa. For this reason, I am STOKED to have my friend Trina Altman back on the podcast to dive DEEP into these concepts. Trina Altman is the creator of Yoga Deconstructed® and Pilates Deconstructed®, which helps movement teachers foster an embodied understanding of their teaching and create a more sustainable practice through an interdisciplinary approach based on current movement science. Her work has been published in Yoga Journal, Yoga International and Pilates Style. Her book, Yoga Deconstructed®: Movement Science Principles For Teaching was published by Handspring Publishing in December 2020. Check out our previous conversations in Episode #3 (about her Yoga Deconstructed approach) and Episode #34 (all about a creative use of props in asana class). In this episode you'll hear: what the research shows about why yoga-related injuries are quite common the difference between internal and external cueing and when you might use one rather than the other the nine different factors to consider when regressing or progressing a movement various movement adaptations based on these nine factors and when they would likely be regression and when they are more likely to be a progression what yoga teachers listening can do to integrate these ideas into their teaching Learn More From Trina: on her website buy her book! on Instagram

For this episode I sat down with Trina Altman.Trina is the creator of the programs Yoga Deconstructed® and Pilates Deconstructed®, which we’ll talk about today. On top of her public, privates and online classes and courses, Trina has presented at Kripalu, the Yoga Alliance Leadership Conference and Yogaworks, among others. She also created and taught a Pilates continuing-education course for physical therapists and was part of the faculty for the Brain Longevity conference at UCLA.MY 5 BIGGEST TAKE-AWAY FROM THIS EPISODE:1- Body weight activities, repetition, and low variability adds more risks for injury. Play with load, range of motion, direction of movement, plane of movement, open chain/close chain, orientation to gravity, intensity, tempo, etc.2- There's huge value in one-on-one lessons. You can learn faster and get an individualized, customized, personalized approach to your movement. Progression is faster, there's more possibility for leaning and it's easier to avoid injuries.3- Pain is a bio-psycho-social event. The correlation between damaged tissue and pain is low. Everybody have a difference pain tolerance. For the same sensation, one person will identify it as pain the other as pleasure. It's really complicated.4-Cross training is key to continue a yoga practice for a long time without sacrificing what you love by having to stop due to an injury. Think about adding external load, cardiovascular training, balance and agility, motor development, coordination, flexibility, jumping skills, and more.5-Before you take a group class, you should know what you can do, what you can't do, what you should and what you shouldn't do. And know that those 4 things will change throughout your life and from day to day. The only way to know those 4 things is to work one on one with a teacher. That way, in a group class, you don't need the teacher for modifications, you know how to take care of your body.QUESTIONS SHE ANSWERED DURING THIS EPISODE :You created Yoga deconstructed and Pilates deconstructed, can you explain what those are? And why you created them? What is somatic movement? What problem did you try to address with creating yoga deconstructed? What in yoga/pilates was putting you at risk for injuries? How can we bring more variability in our movement practice? What is the goal? What can we do, inside our scope of practice, to help prevent injuries? If we do have pain during yoga or everyday life activity, where do we start? What do we look at first? What are the different clues we can be aware of?I know some listeners probably love the flexibility aspect of yoga and don’t naturally feel drawn to strength or stability work. How can they continue to improve their flexibility, focus on their flexibility without sacrificing their stability? One thing you teach a lot and I also love to teach is regressions/progressions, can you explain how those are useful? And give an example? How can student learn what modification is best suited for them? How can a teacher look at the yoga cues they use all the time and evaluate the use/effect of what they are trying to do?If there's no right way to do things, is there a wrong way?SUBSCRIBE, RATE & REVIEW!DONATE OR BECOME AN EXCLUSIVE MEMBER TODAY.Thank you so much for listening and being part of our 56th episode! Almost 10 years ago when my first iPhone app came out, there were only 4 other Pilates-based apps in the iTunes store and my app was the only one showcasing the classical mat work. I was thrilled when I was contacted by Amanda Altman, then the assistant managing editor of Pilates Style magazine because they were interested in featuring my app. Now a decade later, I have another opportunity to be just as thrilled because Amanda Altman is our guest today. With a degree in Political science from Stern College in New York City, Amanda set out to find work but soon realized a career in Poli/Sci wasn’t for her. Amanda knew she loved to read and write and thought writing and editing for a magazine might be a better fit. She began interviewing for various magazines and in 2006 was hired by Pilates Style as their assistant managing editor. Two years later, Amanda was basically running the show from crafting the editorial lineup for each issue to editing and writing exercise stories and features to organizing the magazine’s massive 3-day photo shoots where they’d shoot content for almost the entire year.

In this episode, Janet and Nikki chat with Pilates teacher and Movement Coach James Crader about how the core is more than just the "abs" and how to use this idea for whole body movement. They cover: Why you might want to rethink how you use common fitness cues like brace and squeeze (and when you should use those words) The difference between finding your core through the action of squeezing and engaging it through dynamic movement How core became a fitness buzzword and why it's more than just training the abdominals Finding a balance between abdominal exercises like planks and crunches and building awareness around the abs through movement exploration The role of muscle timing and the nervous system in efficient movement The potential issues with living + training in a posterior pelvic tilt and the potential correlation with intestinal distress Tips for creating more exploration and ease in your movement and Pilates practice About James Crader: James is a Movement Coach specializing in Pilates and John F. Barnes Myofascial Release Therapy, a CoreAlign Faculty Member, co-host of the Thinking Pilates Podcast, and owner of Evolved Body Studio in Sacramento, CA. Growing up he never thought anything fitness would be his calling. He was nerdy, enjoyed listening to and telling stories, and loved to experiment, create, and play with the shapes he could make while rolling around on the floor. He and his sister even practiced writing with their toes (just in case). All that made for a really weird kid, but an innovative movement educator. James began his Pilates training with Balanced Body, but has gone on to study with numerous teachers from many lineages of Pilates and beyond. James has contributed to movement and lifestyle conversations on podcasts, diverse blogs, Pilates Style magazine, the documentary A Movement of Movement, and now Pilates Anytime. You can find out more about James and EB Studio at www.EvolvedBodyStudio.com, or follow his movement musings through Project Movement University (project_Move.U.) on Facebook and Instagram.
Injury Prevention is the best way to stay healthy As it's currently Tradies National Health Month, I thought it would be appropriate to have a guest on the show that not only deals with post trauma, but also pre trauma. It makes sense that the best way to treat an injury is not to have one in the first place, so a lot of our message this month is based around getting access to the right information and resources, in oder for you listeners to make some positive changes. Amanda is a physiotherapist and a Pilates instructor, located on the South Coast of NSW. According to the Medical Dictionary, Pilates is a series of nonimpact exercises designed by Joseph Pilates to develop strength, flexibility, balance, and inner awareness. As Amanda eludes to during this podcast, pilates is philosophy that builds strength in core muscles, stabilising muscles and the mind. The aim is to build a solid foundation so that when you need to perform everyday exercises (like lifting, reaching, crouching, running, even walking and sitting), your body mobile and strong enough in the right areas. It was interesting to hear Amanda say that it's not uncommon for patients come in that may be fit and strong, but have weak foundations. The society we live in rewards six packs, but doesn't take into consideration the relevance of that six pack being correctly supported by core and stabilising muscles.. Amanda's unique approach comes as a result of being able to apply both what she knows from being a physio and what she knows from being a pilates instructor, which results in a holistic perspective on the ecosystem that is our body.
