People assume that popular supplements can only help — but that's not always true. In this episode, Tara unpacks the risks of DIY-ing your own supplement routine, even with commonly recommended options like magnesium or vitamin D. She explains why personalized advice matters and how what works for one person may not work for another. Tara shares a powerful client story about gut health issues that got worse after the client added supplements she found online. With the help of targeted gut testing, Tara's team uncovered that those supplements were actually feeding the wrong gut bacteria — and making symptoms worse, not better. This episode is an eye-opener for anyone who's ever wondered if their supplement routine is really helping. Tara breaks down why it's essential to keep your practitioner in the loop before adding anything new — and how to avoid the common pitfalls of self-prescribing. Here's what is covered: Supplements Aren't One-Size-Fits-All: Just because magnesium or vitamin D is touted online doesn't mean it's right for you. Your body is complex, and repleting a nutrient isn't as simple as just taking a pill. Hidden Pitfalls of DIY Supplementation: I shared a real client case where “healthy” supplements like MSM, broccoli sprout extract, and taurine actually worsened her digestive issues—because they fed the very bacteria contributing to her symptoms! Communication with Practitioners Is Crucial: Always consult with your health practitioner before adding new supplements. What seems harmless could directly counteract your progress or even make symptoms worse. In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Deanna Minich — a nutrition scientist and author of the Rainbow Diet — to talk about a topic we don't hear nearly enough about: the power of color in our food. We dive into what food colors actually do in the body, how they impact everything from mood to memory, and why most of us are walking around with a “color deficiency” without even realizing it. Dr. Minich breaks down the functional role of phytonutrients in a way that's easy to understand, yet incredibly eye-opening. She also challenges conventional diet labels (vegan, carnivore, etc.) and instead invites us to build a more personal, color-coded relationship with food. If you've ever wondered how to shift from counting calories to eating more consciously — or if you're just curious about what “eating the rainbow” really means — this conversation will give you a whole new lens for looking at your plate. Key Takeaways: The Rainbow Diet Philosophy: Move beyond traditional diet patterns to embrace a personalized nutrition approach focusing on the incorporation of diverse phytonutrient-rich colors in the diet. Colorful Foods & Health Benefits: Each color in food offers unique phytonutrients and health advantages, from supporting inflammation control with red foods to enhancing brain function with blue and purple foods. Importance of Creativity and Diversity: Diversifying food types and embracing new combinations can break monotonous eating habits and enrich the microbiome with varied phytonutrients. Chrono Nutrition: Align eating patterns with natural rhythms for optimal metabolic health, integrating concepts like circadian rhythm, seasonal, and lunar dietary adjustments. Expanding the Role of Food: More than sustenance, food represents culture, emotion, and interconnectedness, urging a balanced evaluation of its role in personal well-being. In this episode of Integrative Cancer Solutions, Dr. Karlfeldt interviews Deanna Minich PhD, an expert in nutrition and functional medicine with extensive experience in academia, the food industry, and clinical research. The conversation focuses on the concept of vibrational energy in food and how consuming a variety of colorful foods can support cellular health and potentially aid in cancer prevention and treatment. Deanna explains that foods carry specific frequencies and vibrations based on their molecular structure, with naturally occurring foods having a higher resonance than processed ones. She introduces the "eat the rainbow" concept, detailing how different colored foods provide unique phytonutrients that support various bodily functions: red foods for inflammation and immunity, orange for reproductive and brain health, yellow for digestion, green for heart health and detoxification, and blue/purple for brain health and mood regulation. The discussion explores how mitochondria function as the energy harvesters of cells, extracting energy through oxidative phosphorylation and utilizing the color bonds in food similar to photosynthesis in plants. Deanna emphasizes the importance of dietary diversity to avoid "phytonutrient gaps" and suggests tracking daily color consumption to ensure a full spectrum of nutrients. She also addresses how external stressors like electromagnetic fields and artificial blue light can negatively impact cellular health. Deanna provides practical advice on cooking methods, recommending steaming and slow, moist cooking techniques over high-heat methods like grilling and frying that produce inflammatory compounds. She advocates for seasonal eating, mindful consumption practices, and eating in community to enhance digestion and nutrient absorption. The episode concludes with Deanna directing listeners to her website for additional resources, infographics, and information on nutrition and health.Naturally occurring foods have higher vibrational energy and resonance than processed foods, which can support cellular health and potentially aid in cancer prevention.Different colored foods provide specific phytonutrients that support various bodily functions: red for inflammation and immunity, orange for reproduction and brain health, yellow for digestion, green for heart and detoxification, and blue/purple for brain health and mood.Mitochondria function as energy harvesters in cells, extracting energy from the color bonds in food through a process similar to photosynthesis in plants.Cooking methods significantly impact food's health benefits, with steaming and slow, moist cooking techniques preserving nutrients better than high-heat methods like grilling and frying that produce inflammatory compounds.Mindful eating practices, seasonal food consumption, and dietary diversity are essential strategies to maximize nutrient absorption and avoid "phytonutrient gaps" in your diet.----Grab my book A Better Way to Treat Cancer: A Comprehensive Guide to Understanding, Preventing and Most Effectively Treating Our Biggest Health Threat - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CM1KKD9X?ref_=pe_3052080_397514860 Unleashing 10X Power: A Revolutionary Approach to Conquering Cancerhttps://store.thekarlfeldtcenter.com/products/unleashing-10x-power-Price: $24.99-100% Off Discount Code: CANCERPODCAST1Healing Within: Unraveling the Emotional Roots of Cancerhttps://store.thekarlfeldtcenter.com/products/healing-within-Price: $24.99-100% Off Discount Code: CANCERPODCAST2----Integrative Cancer Solutions was created to instill hope and empowerment. Dr. Hoffman continues his conversation with Dr. Deanna Minich who authored a comprehensive review of melatonin.
Headlines are sounding alarms over the widespread use of melatonin—especially as a sleep aid for young kids. Dr. Deanna Minich has authored a comprehensive review of melatonin, in which she likens it to vitamin D in its potential utility for a variety of ailments—not just for insomnia and jet lag, but also for metabolic syndrome and diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, brain disorders, autoimmune conditions, eye problems, tinnitus, PCOS, endometriosis, infertility, viral infections, and even ADHD and autism. Additionally, melatonin may confer anti-aging benefits. She affirms its overall safety, but cautions that some formulations are sketchy and may contain contaminants or vastly exceed or undershoot their claimed melatonin content. She discusses how modern life, with its ever-present artificial light, shift work, and travel across time zones may disrupt our circadian rhythms and put us in a state of darkness deprivation, with consequent melatonin depletion. For many conditions less is more, and use in children should be limited to special cases. Dr. Minich also emphasizes that lifestyle factors like properly timed light and darkness exposure, blue blocker glasses and screen apps, exercise and diet are cornerstones to optimal melatonin production, with melatonin supplements constituting only part of a holistic approach.
Danielle and Whitney sit down with nutrition scientist, educator and author Dr. Deanna Minich to discuss how vast detoxification is. They share more about the impact of what we input versus what we output and how plants can be our divine healers. This episode is brought to you by Bon Charge, Lifeforce, and Lumebox. What if we told you there's a holy grail of molecules that can prevent early aging, promote longevity, and help prevent dementia and Alzheimer's? This super powerful hormone, neurotransmitter, and antioxidant is melatonin. Today's episode is a masterclass on melatonin and its crucial role in our bodies. Today on The Dhru Purohit Show, Dhru sits down with Dr. Deanna Minich to discuss the crucial role of melatonin in our body as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and circadian regulator. Dr. Minich reveals early warning signs of low melatonin levels and lifestyle habits that can disrupt its production. She also covers the latest research on melatonin and critical considerations for supplementation. If you are looking for a deep dive into melatonin, this episode is for you. Dr. Deanna Minich is a nutrition researcher, educator, and functional medicine-trained clinician with a unique approach to nutrition that combines physiology and psychology. She has served on the Institute of Functional Medicine's Nutrition Advisory Board and curriculum committee and is a faculty member teaching nutrition for the Advanced Practice Module for Environmental Health. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the American Nutrition Association and is President of the American College of Nutrition. In this episode, Dhru and Dr. Minich dive into (audio version / Apple Subscriber version): The Crucial Role Melatonin Plays In the Body (00:00:33 / 00:00:33) Early Warning Signs That Your Melatonin Is Low (2:22 / 2:22) Melatonin Production and The Circadian System (9:35 / 6:15) Brain Health and Preventing Alzheimer's (13:06 / 9:46) Lifestyle Habits That Disrupt Melatonin and Corrective Measures (17:34 / 14:14) Melatonin Supplements and Synthetic Production and Testing (29:16 / 24:15) The Research: What We Know (38:00 / 33:00) How Melatonin Is Made (43:00 / 38:00) Who Should and Should Not Take Melatonin (50:41 / 45:40) The Rebound Effect (1:02:00 / 57:00) Melatonin As a Routine Supplement (1:06:30 / 1:01:30) Personalization For Your Phenotype (1:10:50 / 1:05:50) *Dr. Minich's note about the animal study mentioned: Seasonal breeders, like mice, use changing light and melatonin to regulate reproduction. In animals living in cold climates like Canada, breeding is timed with daylight changes to avoid winter births when conditions are harsh. Humans, however, are not seasonal breeders and can reproduce year-round. If melatonin caused infertility in humans, it would be widespread, which it is not. Melatonin helps counteract infertility caused by environmental toxins due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Did you know the average American is aging faster than they should? It's true. Your biological age tends to be older than your actual age, and most of us will spend the last 16 years of our lives managing multiple illnesses. Needless to say, we need to do something about this—and fast. Fortunately, we can. In this episode, Dr. Kara Fitzgerald joins me to talk about her mind-blowing study, in which they de-aged people by three years in just eight weeks. She's going to explain the study, what they learned about the real levers of aging, why genetics aren't as influential as we previously thought, and what we can all start doing today to live better for longer. You're going to be shocked by how simple it is to literally turn back the clock.
